Fighting Fate (It’s a losing battle)
Theodore Nott x gn!reader
Inspired by, and dedicated to @musingsofahufflepuff
Summary: soulmate!au in which everyone sees in black and white until they meet their soulmate. Bold of fate to assume it can tell you what to do.
word count: 3.1k
Tumblr media
Ever since your first day at Hogwarts, you’d been told that you were lucky. A one in a million chance. Exceptional. Because as soon as you’d been sorted, and the sorting hat had been lifted up off of your head, your eyes had met his, and the world had burst into color.
It had been wildly disorientating at first- you almost fainted from the visual overload as the banners over each section of students burst into bright color. As you went to take your seat, you got strange looks from several students, but you never felt his eyes leave you.
You’d always thought it was rubbish. Even at the ripe old age of eleven. Your mother had first explained the idea of soulmates to you as a bedtime story. You remember her explaining how everything looked bland and colorless now because you hadn’t met your soulmate yet. But once you did, the world would come to life.
“When will I meet my soulmate?” You’d asked.
“Well, that’s the catch isn’t it? It’s different for everyone. Some meet their soulmate very young. At school even. But some, some will never meet their soulmate. They can be anywhere in the world, fate doesn’t discriminate.”
You’d scrunched your little nose up in distaste.
“That’s stupid. Why do I have to listen to fate?”
Your mother had only laughed, tucking you in and kissing your forehead goodnight. But the sentiment had remained as you grew up. How could someone really just be meant for you? Ridiculous.
Theo had known that you were going to be his soulmate before fate did. He’d watched silently from his seat on the train as you boarded, a nervous grin on your face as you waved goodbye to your family. You were perfect, and he couldn’t take his eyes off of you. At least until Mattheo swatted his arm.
“What’re you staring at, mate?” He’d asked loudly, gaining the attention of the other boys in the carriage.
“See them, there?” Theo asked, pointing to where you were boarding. “That’s going to be my soulmate.” He’d announced proudly.
“Yeah, okay mate,” the other boys had laughed, quickly moving on to the next topic.
But Theo didn’t take his eyes off of you until you disappeared through the train doors and off into some unknown compartment.
The next time he saw you was at the sorting ceremony. He watched as you confidently made your way up to the front, the smile never leaving your face as McGonagall lowered the hat onto your head. It only took a few moments of deliberation before the hat was being lifted off of your head and Theo’s eyes met yours.
It was like the wind was taken out of him as the room sprung to life, colors swirling around his vision as his eyes raced around the room in awe.
By the end of the night, all of Theo’s friends had been sorted into Slytherin with him. Mattheo, Enzo, Draco, Blaise. Even Crabbe and Goyle.
“I was right on the train. About them being my soulmate,” he’d announced proudly, pointing out different objects and describing the different colors to his friends who wondered in amazement.
You on the other hand, didn’t speak a word of it to anyone until you accidentally let it slip to your mother over break that you could see the pretty colored ornaments strung up on the tree.
She’d been thrilled of course, wanting to know every detail about this soulmate of yours. What did he look like? What house was he? Had the two of you spoken.
You answered each question with less enthusiasm than the one prior, and eventually she got the point and stopped asking.
As soon as the news slipped that Theodore Nott, a child of the sacred twenty-eight, and son of Tiberius Nott no less, could see in color however, it didn’t take long for people to start noticing you. Telling you how lucky you were to have found your soulmate. To be able to see color. As if you wanted a soulmate at eleven years old.
The first few years it was easy to avoid. Being only eleven or twelve, Theo was content admiring you from a far. Third year was when the boy finally got the courage to really try and talk to you for the first time. Sure he’d said hi a few times over the past couple years, but nothing you’d found particularly note worthy. Especially not for someone who was supposedly your soulmate.
Tumblr media
“Are you any good at charms?” A voice asks, startling you as you look up from the essay you had been finishing up in the court yard. It was a warm, cloudy day, with only a light breeze, so you’d thought it would be the perfect day to take your studies outside.
You stare up in surprise at the brunette boy in front of you, watching silently as he takes a seat across from you.
In the past, you'd played the avoiding game, quickly scurrying off if you saw the boy or his friends approaching. This year, you hadn't been taking the same precautions, and it seemed Theodore was taking full advantage.
“I’m alright,” you reply hesitantly.
That was a lie. Charms was your best subject, but you were hoping the boy might go away. He didn’t.
"I know that you're top of the class," he responds, staring intently at you with a sly smirk.
That afternoon you begrudgingly helped Theodore with his charms homework, and he happily helped you with your DADA essay. There wasn’t a whole lot of interaction between the two of you, but he wasn’t horrible you supposed. At least he had brain cells to rub together.
After that he kept popping up sporadically throughout your third year.
At quidditch tryouts he'd insisted on partnering with you for several of the drills. You both were offered a place on the team. In the Great Hall he'd seek you out to ask about the homework assignment he'd missed after skiving off of class with Mattheo. The fact that you gave him your notes each time meant nothing. Obviously. And every so often, between the shelves of books in the library, you'd see a flash of soft brown hair, and intense eyes gazing at you before they disappeared as if you were imagining it.
With each increasing encounter, the both of you made idle conversation as you kept the boy at an arms length. It was nothing personal really. In fact the more you thought about it, he seemed perfectly alright. But something in your stubborn thirteen year old self just wanted to stick it to fate. So you continued to ice the boy out.
Theodore however, was nothing if not determined. He knew from the moment he saw you that he was meant to be yours, and he’d be damned if he let you slip through his fingers. Thirteen year old Theodore was a stubborn bastard and he knew he was willing to play the long game.
Tumblr media
Things grew a bit more complicated in fourth year when you became friends with some of the Slytherin crowd.
It had been an accident really. You’d been reading down by the Black Lake when Daphne Greengrass had stumbled upon you, followed closely by Pansy Parkinson and Lorenzo Berkshire.
“Oh!” she’d said in delight, seeing the book in your hands, “I love that book!”
The two of you ended up talking enthusiastically about the novel for almost an entire hour with Pansy and Enzo butting in every so often to add their thoughts.
“Wait, you’re Theodore’s soulmate aren’t you?” Enzo asks, eventually recognizing you.
You eye the boy cautiously as you nod slowly, suddenly feeling self conscious.
Pansy just wrinkles her nose.
“Sorry you got stuck with such a tosser.” She says.
The four of you are quiet for a moment before your laughter breaks the silence, the other three following shortly after.
After that, you’re integrated into their little group seamlessly. You’d always been a bit of a loner. Sure people would wander up to you often enough to chatter about what it was like to see colors, but that was really all people wanted to know about you. Like it was some trivial party trick.
It was nice having your own friends to study with and wander about Hogsmeade with on the weekends. It was nice to have people who liked being around you simply for being you. Not because some magical force had decided to bind you to a whole other human and grant you the ability to see color.
It didn’t take long for Theo to notice you hanging about more frequently. How could he not? You were so pretty. So smart and witty. So perfect. He was just so happy to have you around more often. Even if it wasn’t to spend time with him specifically.
He reveled in any little morsel of information that he could scrape up from your friends. Your favorite color, your favorite sweets at Honeydukes, your class schedule. Theo was willing to admit the last one was a bit weird, but he was really just hungry to learn anything he could about his elusive soulmate.
Soon enough, it didn’t become unusual for Theodore and Mattheo to join the four of you on your little excursions. Popping up at the Black Lake, or meeting up with you at the Three Broomsticks. He was just always there. As if he was making a point of it. And begrudgingly you began to let him in.
A friend of your friends was okay you thought. Wouldn’t hurt to get to know him a bit. That wasn’t crossing any lines.
For Theo however, this was huge. He was finally getting somewhere. Even if you weren’t ready for any sort of romantic relationship, he was going to be the best damn friend you’d ever had.
Tumblr media
By fifth year, there was simply no denying it. Theodore Nott was your best friend. You weren’t really sure how it had happened. The two of you just fit so well together. He had truly wormed his way into your life.
It had started with the study sessions.
"Remember when you helped me with charms in third year?" He'd asked. "I got top marks on that assignment."
As those became more frequent, it had turned into afternoons by the lake with both of you deep in your own novels, but sharing the comfortable silence.
Then it had morphed into weekends at Hogsmeade. Your friends thought they were being subtle when they consistently slipped away, leaving you and Theo to wander about the village. You couldn't find it in yourself to mind though.
You’d tried to keep him at an arms length. You really had. But Enzo couldn’t make you laugh as hard as you did with Theo. And Daphne just wasn’t the intellectual match that Theo was. And Pansy always made sure you let loose sure, but being around Theo was just- freeing.
You still weren’t sold on the whole soulmate thing though. Sure Theo was great. Perfect even. But you just couldn’t shake the icky feeling of blindly trusting fate to decide your life.
Then it happened. No one was expecting it. Especially not Pansy. But you and Pansy and Draco and Theo had all been working late on a potions assignment before dinner, and on your way back up from the dungeons, Pansy ran smack into a certain platinum haired Ravenclaw. You’d later find out that her name was Luna Lovegood. As soon as their eyes met, Pansy stumbled, leaning into you for support. You already knew what was happening as her eyes darted around wildly.
“Oh. I suppose we’re soulmates then aren’t we?” The girl said, a dreamy look overtaking her.
It all seemed too easy for them after that. It was like a flip had switched and the two were just mad for each other. A picture perfect example of what soulmates should be.
You found it to be slightly horrifying how blindly trusting fate could severely change a person and their relationship with an essential stranger.
Theo however, couldn’t help but feel a tinge of jealousy. He had what? Almost five whole years on Pansy, and was lucky to get a friendly hug out of his soulmate. Yet Pansy and Luna were inseparable after only a few short weeks.
Not that Theo thought he was entitled to your affection necessarily. But it would be nice if you’d at least acknowledge the bond you two shared he thought.
“Why don’t you believe in soulmates?” Daphne asks one night.
It was one of those rare nights where it was only you, Daphne, Pansy, and Enzo huddled together wrapped in thick, warm blankets inside Daphne and Pansy’s dorm room. Salazar knows where Millicent was off spending her night. A bottle of shared fire whisky sat between you and packs of chocolate frogs littered the floor.
You blink in surprise at your friend’s question. You didn’t talk about soulmate stuff much.
“I do believe in them,” you say with a simple shrug.
“Yeah but you don’t really believe in them, ya know? Why?” She pushes.
You pause again, glancing at Pansy who was looking back at you intently.
“I don’t know. I guess I just don’t like the idea of someone deciding to be with me, just because they’re supposed to.” You say finally.
“I suppose I know what you mean.” Pansy murmurs after a moment.
You look at the girl in surprise and can tell the other two are shocked as well.
“Don’t get me wrong. I adore Luna. Really. I always tell her that I’m so glad that fate put us together. But then sometimes I wonder. If it weren’t for fate, would I have even given her a second glance that day I bumped into her in the corridor?”
There’s a silent lull as your group mulls over Pansy’s words before slowly drifting off to a new topic.
In another dorm, not so far off, Theo lay on his bed staring blankly up at the ceiling.
“Think they’ll come around soon?” Mattheo asks, sensing his roommate’s building tension.
“I dunno. But I’ll wait,” he replies, closing his eyes and letting images of you flood his mind. “They’re worth it.”
That night as you’re leaving to return to your dorm, Enzo catches your arm, pulling you off to the side.
“You can never tell Theo that I told you this, but the first time I met Theo, we were on the train waiting to leave for Hogwarts and he pointed out the window to a someone and said ‘they’re going to be my soulmate’. Then, at the sorting ceremony he got all dizzy all the sudden, and when we got to the common room, he said that he’d been right about who his soulmate would be. You. Just thought you should know.”
And with that, he’s gone.
It’s after that that you really begin to see Theo. You’d never really given him a fighting chance. But now, you kind of wanted to.
Tumblr media
It’s the beginning of sixth year when Theo finally notices the shift. Notices you actually seeking him out on purpose, not flinching away when your hands brush, eyes hovering on his lips a bit too long for it to be accidental. And to say that he is ecstatic.
Meanwhile you were silently kicking yourself for taking so long to get over your petty bullshit with fate. Sure you still didn’t love the idea of it all, but after spending enough time with Theo, you could really, truly see the appeal.
After that night in fifth year, you began noticing how Theodore was one of the only students who could keep up with your academic prowess. He could always sense when you were tired, or stressed, or simply in a mood, and always did his best to subtly cheer you up. He was always there. Even after all the years you had put him through the wringer, he remained by your side. And that’s what really convinced you.
It’s also what landed you here, at the top of the astronomy tower, with your head in Theodore’s lap as his fingers raked gently through your hair.
It had become a usual meeting spot for the both of you. Theo had brought you up here a week into the school year starting. It was his safe place. His getaway when everything got to be too much, or when he just needed space to think. When those words had left his mouth you had melted. He trusted you. You had meant so much to him for so long, and you couldn't be bothered to give him the time of day.
“I’m sorry,” you mumble, eyes gazing out at the swirling navy sky that seemed to stretch on forever.
“For what, amore?”
“Dunno. Making you feel like you weren’t good enough, or makin you feel like a bad soulmate.”
Theo looks down at you, and you meet his steady gaze.
“I knew I was good enough, amore. We wouldn’t be soulmates if we weren’t perfect for each other.” He replies.
You perk up at this. “You think I’m perfect?” You ask, a dopey smile appearing on your face.
Theo just rolls his eyes, shaking his head as he laughs. He'd grown used to your antics. Just another piece of you that he'd grown fond of.
“I said that we’re perfect together. But you’re perfect too I suppose.”
It hadn’t taken nearly as long as you had expected to reach this point. It seemed that Theo had just been waiting for the word to switch on boyfriend mode. All it took was one spontaneous, heated make out session in his dorm room, and you had the boy wrapped around your finger. (He already had been for years, but you didn’t need to know that.)
“Alright. Wrap it up love birds. You better be fully clothed,” Pansy calls, head peeping up from the top of the staircase leading up to the tower. “You two have been up here for hours, and you can’t have them all to yourself Theodore. They were our friend first.”
“Yeah! Time’s up lover boy!” You hear Enzo call.
Theo groans, head falling back as he rises lazily, offering you a hand up.
“I waited five years for this, can’t you guys let me have my moment?” He calls back.
“No!” The chorus replies.
With a laugh, you grab onto Theo’s hand, tugging him towards the stairs.
“C’mon. If we get Mattheo and Enzo drunk enough, they won’t notice if I spend the night,” you say with a cheeky wink.
“I heard that!” Enzo’s voice rings out.
“You wouldn’t say no to me anyway,” you shout back.
With a smile, Theo follows you down the stairs after your rowdy friends, hand wrapped tightly around yours. It had taken him five long years, and he certainly wasn’t going to let go anytime soon.

Sam’s Weekly Wrap Up
Week one is upon us! My Advent Month has been so much fun to do so far, and I can't wait for the rest of it!
The Act of Healing It didn’t take long to realize that it wasn’t normal—that Harry wasn’t normal. That no one else could see the strange lights and dented auras that surrounded everyone. Harry had learned at an early age to hide it, to tell no one else about it. It worked. At least until he encountered a boy in a robe shop with the largest light he’d ever seen.
But what did it mean?
Renatus Reborn “I know Potter,” Draco began, leaning forward slightly. “I wasted six years observing him only for him to die in that forest. I don’t know who you are, but you somehow managed to get inside his body.”
Or the one where the rest of the world believes that Harry Potter came back, alive and whole. But to those that knew him, he didn’t come back at all, for it wasn’t Potter who stood before them. It was someone else.
Predicting the Present Malfoy—of all people—was the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, and Harry didn’t like it. He didn’t like it one bit.
“Professor Malfoy said we’ll be learning the basics on how to cast a Patronus!”
Oh really? That, Harry had to see.
Where to? Date time, only why does Scorpius think he gets to tag along? And is that a suit he's wearing?
Tricks and Giggles Professor Malfoy rarely gave extra credit, the harsh and bitter teacher that he was. So, when it was announced that all they had to do was get his son—Scorpius, who was still a baby—to interact with their Magic, they all assumed it would be a walk in the park.
How hard could it be?
Because it's you 'They are only together because they are soulmates.'
They were so much more than that and it was about time the world realized it. This is a story of how Harry and Draco fell in love and how very little being soulmates had to do with any of it.
Crude Coffee “—this coffee tastes horrible.”
“Of course it does.” The drawling tone was biting and held derision. “We here at Cup of Crude promise coffee in a timely manner, we never promised that it’ll taste good.”
Harry snorted, unable to help himself.

Harry Potter Soulmate AU Meet Cute (Drarry)
Harry is at Madam Malkin’s, just like he’s supposed to be, super excited about wizards and magic!!, and very happy that Hagrid said he doesn’t have to cover his tattoo on his arm, it’s special to him, not freakish.
Queue Draco walking in, not sparing a glance to Harry, and getting sized for robes when Harry sees his tattoo. His matching tattoo.
Harry James Potter is pissed. This tattoo is supposed to be his, and special. Not the same as some random blonde kid.
He holds his arm close to himself and just sends the most angry glare at Draco, who finally turns to him, assuming the anger is because of his parents. Everyone knows Draco Malfoy after all. He glares back.
Anyways Draco asks him what his problem is, expecting to hear more remarks about his father, but instead Harry just glares and calls him a copycat.
With a sneer and a Black Family signature level of judgement, Draco gives him a once over and says, “A what? A copycat? There is NOTHING from you I’d copy.”
Harry responds with “Well clearly not or else you wouldn’t have the same exact tattoo on your arm, you sneak. Had to have every detail matching it? Couldn’t come up with anything original?”
Anyways they chat and Draco is like
holy fuck that’s my literal soulmate what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck
“you’ve GOT to meet my parents they’re coming to pick me up from here”
“So sorry I forgot to introduce myself I’m Draco Lucius Malfoy, what’s your name?”
Oh Merlin my soulmate is THE Harry James Potter why is he dressed like a street urchin why doesn’t he know anything magical why is the Hogwarts Groundskeeper with him???
And Harry instantly becomes well connected with people who would advocate for him. He definitely doesn’t argue with the Sorting Hat and is perfectly fine with being in the same house as Draco, and Dumbles is in wayyyy over his head.

Hogwarts was in its prime during the autumn season. With the equinox past and the chill of fall finally set in, Hermione was able to enjoy the courtyard and its palette of oranges, yellows, and reds on a daily basis. She smiled when a certain blonde blocked her reading light, the only person permitted to commit such a crime.
She clicked her tongue, “You’re blocking my light, Malfoy.”
“I thought I was your light, Granger.” He sat next to her on the checkered blanket she’d spread out on the grassy area between two of the castle’s towers, an open but private area to read and be with him.
“You provide the light inside of me. As soulmates typically do.” She took in the hardened features of his face and the strong veins in his neck as he leaned back on his palms. “But unless you begin actually glowing, I’m afraid it’s the wrong kind of light.”
He lazily turned his head toward her, a crooked grin played on his lips. “Mother sent a letter. Something about an official soulmate ceremony.”
Hermione snorted. “That’s a pureblood tradition. An unnecessary one. Like most of them are.”
“I am a pureblood.” He looked up at the sky, squinting into the sun. “Perhaps you could humor us old traditionalists this one time.”
“You just want to see me in one of those hideous gowns Narcissa will force me into.”
He cupped her face, a feral type of amusement danced in his eyes. “My mother may get to force you into it. But I get to take it off of you.”
Hermione laughed, a light breathy sound. Draco had become more insufferable than ever since the bond had been sealed but she’d be lying if she said it didn’t make a swarm of butterflies take flight in her stomach.
She tilted her head back, offering her lips to him, as if he needed the encouragement. As always, his first kiss was slow and soft, full of meaning and promise. The kisses following were rough and hot, assurance that no one else could make her feel the way he did.

Rebel Rebel
————————————
Tumblr media
Summary: Soulmate AU in which Draco enjoys playing calm piano scores, while his soulmate is more into brackish rock.
“Rebel Rebel,” by David Bowie.
warnings: anxiety issues and adhd if u squint
—————————
Draco frustratedly banged his fist on the old piano keys. He managed to get to the fifth measure before he was rudely interrupted by the clicking of drumsticks and the obnoxious ring of an electric guitar. He closed his eyes and sighed, deciding to give up on playing altogether. The wooden bench creaked as he stood up and kicked it backwards, sliding his music folder into his bag and leaving the Room with a huff.
The Room of Requirement had become somewhat of a haven for him, somewhere he could be left alone. It was, until recently, the quietest place in the castle. Unfortunately his soulmate didn’t seem to care about peace and quiet, or Draco’s sanity. He’d made it down a corridor and a half before the lyrics started.
You've got your mother in a whirl
She's not sure if you're a boy or a girl
Hey babe, your hair's alright
Hey babe, let's go out tonight
Draco rolled his eyes. Did it always have to be this song? Maybe if his soulmate bothered to play a different album every now and then, his hatred for the music wouldn’t be as passionate.
He looked out at the transfiguration courtyard as he passed. There was a couple leaning against the stone walls, laughing and touching and probably having a conversation about how great it was to know your soulmate. He rolled his eyes again, his gaze moving to a group of friends playing exploding snap. Then another group, who were watching one of their peers dance around and jokingly toss his hair.
He almost smiled, until he realized it was Potter. Then he rolled his eyes a third time. But he kept watching (as he always did). Harry kicked around, his two best friends laughing at his antics and shaking their heads. Draco stopped dead in his tracks, however, when he realized Potter’s air guitar had lined up almost perfectly with the music in his head. He averted his eyes and hurried through the hall. There was no way. Simply a coincidence, nothing more.
—————————
Harry laughed, a bit breathless as he sat back down next to Ron. He turned off the song “Rebel Rebel” and leaned against a tree that was shading them from the spring sun.
“Harry, you’ve really got to pick a new song. Imagine what your soulmate would think!” Hermione scolded, but she smirked at him.
“Enough about soulmates, Mione. Let the man breathe,” Ron defended, earning a grin from Harry.
“Yeah mione,” Harry mocked. “If they’re really my soulmate, they won’t mind the songs I like.”
Hermione hummed dismissively and went back to whatever classwork was in her lap. She had mentioned it casually, but her words got him thinking. What would his soulmate think? His head was usually filled with graceful piano and soft humming. It was nothing like his own mixtapes. Harry didn’t mind the sounds of his soulmate, though, he actually quite liked the pianist. The keys seemed to calm down his thoughts and memories, rather than drown them out like his favorite rock bands did. Harry had never even known how to be calm, really. It was something his soulmate had taught him. He pushed the thoughts aside and chose to worry about it later.
The trio stayed put until their free period was over and it was time for potions. Harry hated potions. It was full of Snape, and Slytherins. Specifically one slytherin.
Malfoy had always been a nuisance to Harry, but this year, it had gotten worse. He was just so distracting. His embarrassingly good grades. His impossibly clear skin. That sickeningly blonde hair that was always so perfectly kept, just like the rest of him. Not that he cared how well kept Malfoy was. He was just annoyed that he had nothing to hold against him. Just annoyed, nothing more.
—————————
Draco sighed as he sat down in the potions room. Thankfully, his soulmate quieted down for the rest of his free period. He listened to snapes monotone instruction and began to brew a calming drought, as the professor had asked.
Unfortunately, Draco had quite a bit of experience with calming droughts, given the way his anxiety had increased this year. He guessed it had always been around, but 5th year really showed him the length of it. Piano helped , most of the time. That was one of the reasons he had been playing so much lately.
He chopped and minced and simmered until the potion bubbled that familiar purple color. He stirred it, not focusing too much, and began humming to himself. It was the song he was trying to play earlier, it was stuck in his head. Draco had almost finished the piece by the time his drought was ready to be poured, and only then did he look up from his cauldron.
His eyes quickly found Potter, like they somehow always did. Harry seemed to be lost in thought as well, a trance-like look on his face as he chopped his rosemary stems to the tempo of…
you’ve got to be kidding.
Draco abruptly stopped his song. He watched Potter pause. He looked away before his suspicions could be confirmed.
He carried his drought over to Snape’s desk, handing him the vile with a shaky hand. The professor took it, examining it closely and pouring a bit of it over a leaf. Draco stared at the ground as Snape graded his potion and gave it back just as keenly.
“100 percent. And… perhaps you should consider taking some of it yourself,” Snape told him, apparently noticing his demeanor.
Draco simply looked at him and walked away. He didn’t need to drink this stupid calming potion just because stupid Potter was making him think about something stupid. There was no way they were soulmates. They hated each other. Sure, they’d gotten less hostile over the years, and sure, he’d saved him from miserable failure in potions a few times, but that was it. The accidental eye contact didn’t count. Neither did brushing shoulders on the way to class. It was mere…coexisting. There was nothing even friendly about it. There was no way- no way, that he and Potter could ever-
“Oh, shit, sorry!” Harry stuttered as he ran into Draco.
He had dropped his potion and shattered the vile, spilling the purple liquid all over himself and Draco. The Slytherin wanted to snap, to call him a dunce and yell in his face. But when he looked up from the broken glass and saw the grin on Harry’s face, he froze.
That smile. that big, stupid smile that made Draco’s chest feel all warm. He hoped it looked like he was just surprised by the sudden hit. He simply watched, bewildered, as Potter snatched a rag off of Lavender Brown’s table, haphazardly wiping the front of his shirt and his pant leg.
Thank merlin for translucent white button ups. Wait, what?
No. Draco shook his head and snapped out of his trance, grabbing his wand to cast a cleaning charm and mend where the glass had cut his leg on the way down. At this, Harry dropped the rag and laughed again, realizing he could’ve just used magic as well.
“Thanks. You’ve always been the smart one, haven’t you?” He says, shaking his head and looking up.
“Uhm…” Draco was still at a loss for words. Draco was never at a loss for words. He swallowed thickly, knowing his face must be beet red by now.
“You alright?” Harry asked. Why was he still grinning so brightly?
“…Yes,” Draco muttered, so unusually embarrassed. And with that, he spun on his heel and walked back to his desk, wishing he never healed the cut and just let himself die of blood loss.
—————————
Harry was confused. He had just spilled his entire potion on top of Draco Malfoy, and he didn’t get one insult? Not even an exaggerated whisper of his last name? He stayed put for a moment watching Malfoy walk back to his desk. Harry smiled a bit, amused by the way Draco cleared his throat and glanced at Harry again as he packed up. He threw his parchment back into his bag, along with some…sheet music.
There was sheet music in Dracos bag.
He glanced back to Ron, who hadn’t even seen what just happened. He looked for Hermione next, who glanced between him and Draco, shrugged, and went back to her brew. He gave one last puzzled look before going back to his table to re-pour the drought.
///
Later that week, it finally came time for Harry to ‘worry about it later.’ He laid in bed, staring up at the garnet curtains around him, running a hand through his hair. Hermione had mentioned soulmates again today, and it still had Harry’s head spinning.
He couldn’t think of one person at Hogwarts who only listened to classical music. If you could even call it that. It was always a piano solo, and it had Harry wondering where you could even find tapes of piano scores.
Unless it wasn’t a tape. Were there pianos at Hogwarts? The only place he could think of was the choir room. Or maybe…the Room of Requirement? He should check there. The next time he heard the melody in his head, he’d go to the Room and see if someone had opened it. If they had, then he’d just go inside and find his soulmate. It seemed simple enough, and he wondered-
“Harry!” Rons voice interrupted his run-on thoughts. His head shot up and he saw the redhead holding the curtain open with an exasperated expression. “Bloody hell, it’s like you’re not even on this planet sometimes. I called you four times!”
“Sorry…” he murmured. Ron had been offering him some sweets and asking about a History of Magic assignment, as if Harry would know the answer. He laid back down once his friend had left and sighed once again, turning on his side. Whatever, he thought, soulmates didn’t even matter.
He pressed play.
Rebel rebel, you've torn your dress
Rebel rebel, your face is a mess
Rebel rebel, how could they know?
Hot tramp, I love you so!
————————
“Fucking hell,” Draco muttered. It had now been two weeks since the potions incident, and his soulmate (who was not Harry Potter) was still listening to that song. He’d heard it about three and a half times today, and it’d just now stopped. He sat down at the piano and tried not to think about the way Harry played air guitar, or the way his stares across the great hall had become much less inconspicuous, or the way his shirt had stuck to his tan skin.
He shook the thoughts and began to play. It was a natural thing for him. His long, slender fingers made it easy to reach the keys, and he had a sense of rhythm and steadiness that didn’t show up in his personality. He figured that was why he loved playing the piano. It was a strange feeling for Draco, to love something like it. There were no expectations, like he got from his parents. There was no pressure, like he got from his friends. There was no exhaustion, like he got from quidditch. It was relaxing, and easy, and completely in his control.
He played a soft melody, his hands floating over the black and white keys. He started to softly hum along, his body swaying slightly to the tempo. A few times he had expected that song, that…stupid song to start playing again, but it didn’t. It was the first time in weeks his playing hadn’t been disturbed. It was nice, to finally have a moment to himself. He smiled softly as he played the last note.
—————————
Harry tossed and turned, pressing a hand to his forehead and squeezing his eyes shut. The only thing he wanted right now was a good nights sleep, but apparently that was too much to ask for. Why did he always have to think so much? And why were his thoughts so loud? And why were there so many of them?
He was about to give up and go down to the common room, when he heard a soft familiar melody. He stilled, wanting to hear the quiet song. He listened for a few moments, rolling onto his side and settling into his pillows. The piano continued, and this time it was accompanied by that warm, rich humming. He felt his eyes getting heavy already. He closed them, listening to the music and smiling softly as it lulled him to sleep.
Harry woke up the next morning and…
The next morning?
Harry had slept. Through the whole night. Without any nightmares. He blinked a few times and sat up, grabbing his glasses. He felt more awake than usual. And he hadn’t relived any traumas during the night. So…that was nice.
He left his hair messy and got dressed, feeling a newfound appreciation for his soulmate. The piano melodies had really grown on him. He had even found the name of the song. It was called “Moonlight Sonata,” and it was by Beethoven. Hermione was surprised by his taste when Harry asked if she recognized it.
The song was…comforting. Harry was not usually comfortable. It was nice to have something that could settle him down, almost like the music was hugging him. It helped him focus in class sometimes, too. He wanted to find his soulmate now more than ever.
He made his way down to breakfast, once again planning to catch the pianist. He didn’t even think he knew anyone who could play, besides Malfoy, who used to brag about the lessons his father got-
Harry paused. He almost laughed. There was no way, right? Malfoy could never be capable of sounding so…sweet. His calm composure certainly wouldn’t match a pianist. And he certainly wouldn’t have remembered where the room of requirement was. And the sheet music he had seen in his bag was certainly not a piano score. And…It made perfect sense.
Shit.
Draco Malfoy was Harry Potter’s soulmate.
———————
Draco watched as Harry entered the great hall, and was thoroughly surprised when their eyes met. He was even more surprised when Harry started walking towards the Slytherin table. He pushed his plate away and stared intently at the dark haired boy, who dared to sit next to him.
“Malfoy.” Harry said.
“Potter.”
“Do you, uhm…Is- is there…”
Draco raised a brow. He hoped this question wasn’t about his soulmate. He was not ready to answer that.
“Can I see your bag?” Harry asked.
“…What?”
“Just…can I see it?” He held out a hand.
Draco paused for a moment. For some reason, he didn’t want to refuse. Maybe he just wanted Harry to sit next to him for longer. He hesitantly gave him the school bag.
Once the bag was in his hand, Harry looked at Draco for moment. Then, he opened the top and thumbed through various papers and books, finally stopping on…his music. He paused for a second and pulled it out of the bag, opening the folder to see pages upon pages of piano music. Accompaniments, solos, even some popular muggle songs. Harry ran a finger along one of the lines.
Draco couldn’t help but feel some kind of fear. This was embarrassing. How did he even know the music was there? He half expected Harry to laugh, or rip the pages up, or…something. But he didn’t. He studied the whole folder, as if he was looking for something specific. Draco sincerely doubted Harry could read sheet music, given he could barely read English, so he asked:
“What are you doing?” He’d meant for it to sound venomous, but it’s came out as little more than a whisper. Harry didn’t answer right away.
“Do you- Uhm, Moonlight Sonata?” He stuttered.
“What?”
“Do you…have Moonlight Sonata?” Harry asked more clearly. Draco was still confused, but he slowly nodded.
Harry met his eyes again.
Because Harry knew.
And Draco knew, too.
So he took the folder back, put it in his bag, and walked away.
———————
Harry didn’t go after him. He watched as Malfoy took a deep breath and grabbed his things, quickly leaving the great hall. He had gotten one more look at those icy blue eyes before he left Harry at the Slytherin table. He felt…hurt. He didn’t know why he was hurt, he hadn’t been expecting a heartfelt confession, after all.
But that didn’t mean he didn’t want one.
Harry stared at his hands where the music had been. The music that he’d heard countless times, over and over until it was all he thought about. He finally knew who was playing it. It’d been Draco the whole time.
The whole time.
Every quidditch match, every stolen glance, every route he changed to see him on the way to class. Every time he caught himself staring at Malfoy’s side profile, or watching his silver clad fingers write essays. It’d been him. It had always been Draco, hadn’t it?
Even now, as he sat at the wooden table and heard the soft music once again.
Harry was determined. He forced himself out of his thoughts and abruptly stood up, ignoring the nasty looks some other Slytherins gave him. He marched out of the great hall and went back up to the Gryffindor common room. He avoided conversation with the fat lady, and once he was back in his dorm, he immediately found what he was looking for.
He picked up the cassette tape and shoved it into his bag, already on his way out. He left the common room as quickly as he’d entered, and now he was on the way to the Room of Requirement. Harry had spent hours thinking about how he would approach his soulmate, and this was never part of his plan. But he was sure of it now. He rushed down the seemingly endless corridors, until he finally reached the Room. He stared at the door that formed against the stone wall, and suddenly got very nervous, but not any less stubborn. He went inside.
Draco sat at the white grand piano, leaning over the keys. His eyes followed his fingers as they moved across the board, his foot tapping to the slow rhythm. He bit the inside of his cheek and closed his eyes every now and then, not noticing Harry.
He took advantage of the moment, finally observing his soulmate. He stopped near the entrance for a few beats, staying silent. Draco looked so…engrossed. It was strange to see expressions other than blank stares or arrogant smirks. It looked like he was feeling the music, as if the sounds were ringing from him- not the piano.
He took a few more steps, not wanting to startle the boy. When Harry was finally close enough for him to spot, Draco stopped abruptly and looked back at where the door would’ve been. His eyes flicked back to Harry and then to the piano, frantically.
Harry sat down next to him.
Draco’s brow furrowed, but he didn’t move away. He watched as Harry reached into his pocket and pulled out a small cassette tape. He held it up, and Draco stared. He gave the gryffindor another once-over, waiting for him to say something, but he just moved the tape a little closer. Draco got the message and hesitantly reached up as well, taking it from him. He didn’t do anything for a few seconds. Harry nodded towards the tape and gestured for him to look closer.
Draco flipped the tape over and read the lettering across the white label in the middle.
‘REBEL REBEL - BOWIE’
The name was written messily in red ink, and there was a star drawn next to it that pulled the corner of his lip into a smile. He inspected the plastic box for a bit longer, realizing that this was Harry’s way of telling him. Showing him, rather. Showing Draco that he’d figured it out, too, and still came to see him. Draco had thought Harry would be angry, that he’d push him away and argue, but…he didn’t. He glanced back up to Harry.
The look they gave each other said so much, Draco didn’t think he needed to add anything. But he did.
“I hate this song.”
Harry laughed, which made Draco smile, which made Harry stop laughing and stare at him wondrously.
“I might start believing you’re my soulmate if you keep smiling like that,” he said.
Draco’s face got hot and he looked down at the tape, biting his lip. Harry paused for a moment.
“…You know…I didn’t like it all that much either, but my Aunt and Uncle hated it, so it became my favorite,” He continued.
Draco smiled again, but he didn’t look up from his lap as he spoke.
“Another act of defiance, then?” He said quietly. Harry softly chuckled and gave him another nod.
“Yeah…I guess so.” He tilted his head down a bit, trying to read the blonde’s expression. Draco noticed and glanced up at Harry, tapping the cassette against his leg. He swallowed, not sure what to say.
“I like your piano,” Harry tried again. “You play really nicely.”
Draco nodded in thanks and brushed one of his fingers against the keys. He didn’t say anything else.
“Draco.”
His head snapped up to Harry, who shook his head and gave him a questioning look. Draco knew what he was asking,
Of course. Why wasn’t he talking? Why wasn’t he doing anything? Why didn’t he care? He took a deep breath.
“I’m…sorry,” he whispered.
“Why?” Harry asked. His forehead crinkled up in that familiar determined expression. He wasn’t going to let up.
“I don’tknow what to say. I’m not used to this.”
“To what? Feelings?” Harry quipped.
“No- I- It’s…” he sighed. “You. I’m not used to you.”
“What’s the matter with me?” Harry asked, somewhat amused by Draco’s embarrassed response.
“You’re just- You just….make me nervous,” he murmured, still pushing some keys.
Harry smirked. He felt strangely proud that he’d managed to crack Draco Malfoy’s facade.
“Well, you’ll have to get over that,” he grinned, leaning closer to Draco. The Slytherin couldn’t help but smile as he looked the other way, avoiding his gaze.
“Hey, look at me,” Harry said, tilting his head a bit. Draco complied.
“You know…last night, when you played the piano?”
He nodded.
“I hadn’t gotten a full nights sleep in…a while.” Harry said, his tone a bit lighter now. “But…it was easy when you played to me.”
This got Draco’s attention, and he finally met the other boys eyes. His beautiful, big green eyes.
“And, I mean, you know me. I’m a clueless wreck in class. But I always focused better with the music,” he admits, smiling. Draco’s face had softened, and now he was the one feeling proud. But not like the prideful bravado he usually put out. this was mere…excitement that he had done something Harry enjoyed. He smiled back at the brunette.
“I’d watch you draw, sometimes, on your hands,” Draco says. “I wanted to tell you to pay attention.”
At this, Harry laughs again and holds out the hand closest to Draco, which has pen marks across his fingers and palms. It was a habit of his, whenever he got bored. Harry was just showing him the drawings, so he was surprised when Draco reached up to take his hand. He pulled it towards him and started to inspect the little doodles, a smile on his face.
“Can I ask you something?” Harry blurted after a few seconds. Draco looked at him and nodded.
“Why’d you keep running away?”
Draco’s brow furrowed a bit.
“I mean, you knew, didn’t you?”
He nodded again.
“Then…why didn’t you say anything?”
Draco swallowed and thought for a moment before he continued.
“Because…you’re Harry Potter, for fucks sake. I’m…supposed to hate you. We’re- we’re so different. and my father would have a stroke, and- and you make me look stupid, when I get all nervous and flustered and…”
He trailed off, seemingly very worried. Harry simply gave him a downturned smile and laced their fingers together. Draco stared down at their hands and he couldn’t help but smirk.
“Well…opposites attract, right?” Harry offered playfully. Draco chuckled.
“I guess so.”
“They must, if I make you so nervous and flustered,” Harry says, leaning so close that Draco had to pull his face back.
“Oh, shove off.” He rolled his eyes, but his smile only got wider. Harry decided, then, that there wasn’t anything he liked more than making Draco smile.
“I don’t think I will,” Harry declared, grinning at the other boy. He hadn’t moved away from Draco, glancing down at his lips. He was so close that he could kiss him, if he wanted to. And he did. He really, really wanted to kiss Draco.
Draco noticed. He blinked a few times, his expression softening and his breath becoming shallow.
Harry smiled a bit and tilted his head. He lifted his gaze from Draco’s lips and just looked at him, silently asking for permission. When he didn’t pull away, Harry leaned in closer.
Draco wondered why he hadn’t kissed Harry Potter until now. Their lips touched in the most gentle way, as if they were both holding back. There was a moment of hesitation before Draco let go of the other boy’s hand, wrapping his arms around Harry’s neck. He took this as a cue to pull Draco closer, smiling against his lips. They separated for a moment, taking a breath and smiling at each other. Draco moved his hands to the sides of Harry’s face and cupped his jaw. Harry smiled, the silver of his rings feeling cold against his skin. He gently caressed Draco’s side and looked into his bright blue eyes. Their faces got closer until their foreheads touched and their noses bumped, making them both smile wider.
“…I don’t know what I’m gonna tell Ron,” Harry laughs, pressing another short kiss to Draco’s lips. Draco smiled a bit, too.
“Will they…do you think they’ll be mad?” He whispers, searching Harry’s eyes.
“I don’t care,” Harry says. “Mione’s always wanted me to find my soulmate. I reckon she’ll be happy. Besides, it’s not really their business, is it?” He grins.
“No…” Draco smiles. “But…they don’t like me very much, do they?”
Harry shrugs, moving back to kiss Draco’s forehead and pull him into a hug. “They’ll come around. Just let them get to know you…they’ll see.”
Draco nods with a pleased smile on his face. They sat there for a few moments, appreciating the closeness they’d been wanting for so long. It was a tender moment, which wasn’t usual for either of them. Harry decided he could definitely get used to it.
“My father is going to have a stroke, you know.”

Soulmate au with Merlin and Arthur but they reincarnated on Harry and Draco, in that point it changes the way both interact
What change would be more noticeable?
Also Draco would be more likeable to befriend Harry's friends in that situation probably, maybe starting to see similarities between Good/Young!Morgana and Hermione and Ron as Lancelot/Gwaine.
The sorting hat would be laughing hard analysing their past lifes, Arthur a Cleary Griffinnor/Hufflepuff taking a place on Slytherin; Merlin a Slytherin/Ravenclaw on Griffinnor.
Blaise, Pansy, Ron and Hermione don't know what to do but they're finding out how bear each other and even befriending!
Of couse the racism between Pure bloods and Muggleborns would decrease in many houses where this crazy group our be included, Draco isn't a asshole and this is a Complete AU
(let's suppose that Merlin did die someday because him waiting is sad and need me wanna cry so a reincarnation AU can happen)
Draco would find studying with Hermione pleasant, they make a study group every single time there is tests with Snape as the teacher.
Harry have more training with magic duels with the Slytherins help
Draco magic would be weak, yes, Weak to a pure blood but strong to a Born, he finds Harry's ease with magic amazing
Luna comes to the equation too because she is adorable and i love her, Harry thinks fondly of her, He's makes hi remember something but he isn't quite sure of what (Maybe Gwen, Maybe Freya)
Blaise and Ron become friends so fast when they start to actually hang out
Pansy and Draco find a crazy lake in middle of a afternoon flying training, Both try to take the whole group there but they couldn't find the lake again
Imagine Harry spiting medical knowledge when a incident happens, all the group is staring straight to his eyes, Harry arches his eyebrows, Draco laughs like he remembered something funny.

The Slytherin Boys
As Soulmate Tropes
Ft. Mattheo Riddle, Theodore Nott, Draco Malfoy, and Lorenzo Berkshire
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mattheo Riddle
The timer
Everyone has a timer on their wrist that counts down to the second you meet your soulmate
Matteo thinks it’s utter bullshit
He’s not really one to be told what to do
Especially not by something as silly as fate
Before he even begins at Hogwarts, he wraps his wrist in a leather cuff, never taking it off
A soulmate is only a weakness after all
Like his father said
When he finally makes his first friend, Theodore Nott, on the train to Hogwarts, the boy looks at his wrist curiously, but says nothing
The boy’s own timer reads something a bit over six years
He meets others, Draco Malfoy, Blaise Zabini, Pansy Parkinson, all displaying their timers proudly out in the open
He would never want to be that vulnerable
Of course he’s tempted to look when he sees Lorenzo Berkshire’s timer run out in first year when they’re sorted into Slytherin with Daphne Greengrass
Still he doesn’t look
Over the years he watches his friends’ timers run out as they each meet their soulmate until it’s just him and Theodore left.
“You’ve really not looked?” Theo asks him one night as they share a smoke up in the astronomy tower
Matteo shakes his head no
It’s not until a bit over a year later when Theo’s timer runs out as he quite literally runs into his soulmate that Matteo even considers taking a small peak
That night, he lay in bed, eyes boring into the ceiling
Ever so slowly, his fingers wrap around the cuff, inching it off agonizingly
When he finally sees his timer, he blinks
00:00:00
He’d missed them
His head falls back against his pillow as the leather cuff returns to its place, securely around his wrist
He’d never wanted a soulmate anyway, he reasoned with himself
What he didn’t know, was he’d also missed all the stolen glances at him since third year
He makes it through four more sleepless nights before he tears the cuff off, throwing it against the wall, alarming Theo
“I missed them. I fucking missed them.” He says, staring blankly at the wall as Theo looks at his friend sadly
About a week later, it finally goes noticed that the leather cuff is gone
Matteo is sitting in the grass by the Black Lake when they approach
“They stopped sometime in third year. You bumped into me walking off the quidditch pitch.”
Matteo looks up, mouth gaping open as he takes in his soulmate for the first time
“Sorry I didn’t say anything sooner. Figured you didn’t want to know with the whole cuff thing and all.”
It takes him a moment to reply, but once he does, he will not stop apologizing
He looks at his soulmate as if they painted the sun in the sky
It’s slow going at first, Matteo never really believed in love
But once he’s in, he’s in deep
His friends are all shocked of course, but more so relieved that Matteo finally had someone that really clicked
Matteo never wanted a soulmate, but he’d be damned if his was ever torn away from him
Theodore Nott
First Words
The first words one said to their soulmate are permanently scrawled across their other half’s skin
No matter how much someone tried, the words wouldn’t budge
Couldn’t be removed, couldn’t be changed, couldn’t be covered by anything other than clothing
Theo knew
He’d tried
“Fuck off, Nott”
Was permanently brandished across his collarbone
His mother had gasped when she saw it, rushing to cover the words
The epitome of romance Theo had thought dryly to himself on more than one occasion
He told himself he didn’t care
Maybe there was a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why his soulmate wanted him to fuck off despite never speaking to him before
He never let another soul see those words though
Not even when his friends went around, proudly showing off their own words
He didn’t believe in that shit, he’d told them
But it was hard not to believe it in third year when Matteo finally spoke to Daphne’s sister, Astoria, for the first time
Their words matched perfectly
And so did they
In his fourth year, Matteo finally discovered the blasted words after Theo ended up in the hospital wing
He was made fun of ruthlessly for the next several weeks
Not even his soulmate- as a stranger wanted anything to do with him
Maybe that was why, at fifteen, he began his flirtatious escapades
Flirting with anything really, that had a pulse
If his soulmate didn’t want him, surely someone else did
And that’s how he found himself where he was now
Leaning up against the cold stone wall, a comfortable buzz setting in from the drink in his hand as he chatted up some Ravenclaw
He was about to lean in when a hand appeared on his shoulder, pulling him back roughly
“Fuck off, Nott.” The voice said, a hint of agitation in their voice
Theo’s head snapped in the direction of the voice, eyes widening and mind suddenly alarmingly clear
He felt his heart beat speed up as he took in the sight
A moment passes, then two
Blinking, he tried to think of something- anything to say
“Salazar, you’re perfect.”
Fuck.
Theo watched the hairs on his soulmate’s neck prickle as they freeze, eyes slowly meeting his own
“That’s not funny Nott. Who told you to say that?” They ask warily as their friend watches in amused excitement
Tugging at the collar of his shirt, Theo finally shows his words, the black script bold against his tan skin
Theo had always wanted
Theo had always wanted to be wanted
And Theo’s soulmate made sure he always knew just how wanted he was
Draco Malfoy
Hot and Cold
Draco remembered the first time his mother explained the soulmate stuff to him
He was only five when she tucked him into bed and explained
The closer you were to your soulmate, the hotter you felt
The further you were, the colder you felt
But once you were together, everything would feel right
Simple enough his young self had figured
Almost like a game of sorts
A game of fate
He always thought it was strange that his mother was constantly shivering despite his fathers tendency to run quite warm
They must prefer it that way
He himself however, grew up always a bit too cold for his liking
It was early on that he learned to bundle up in layers
His mother cast especially nice warming charms
As he grew older, it confused Draco that his parents ran at two very opposite temperatures, despite his mother’s words echoing in the back of his head
The whole soulmate thing must not be that perfect if “just right” meant one parent felt like a block of ice while the other was practically slick with sweat
He didn’t really understand until the summer before he was to leave for Hogwarts
That’s when his parents hosted a small going away gathering
His cousin Enzo was there
As were the Greengrass sisters
Draco watched Enzo begin to grow agitated, sweat beginning to form on his brow
When the boy looked up to see the older Greengrass sister though, it was as if a wave of calm had washed over him
The heat in his cousin’s cheeks faded as he made his way over to the girl
That’s when Draco finally realized
It didn’t go unnoticed by him then, when his father’s normally warm aura cooled considerably to a suspiciously comfortable level when the Nott family arrived
It was then that Draco determined that soulmates only lead to heartbreak
What was the point of it didn’t guarantee happiness?
Draco was on the train, surrounded by his friends when he first felt it
A small spark of heat, flaring up in his chest
He ignored it
He felt it again at the sorting ceremony, quickly rushing to sit with his new house mates
For once hoping to blend in
The dungeons of the Slytherin common room felt safe
The cool air of the stone walls enveloping him
Every so often, Draco felt a familiar warmth begin to overtake him, subconsciously leading him towards it
But he always did his best to fight it off
Lately however, the tingling feeling of warmth seemed to be chasing after him
Almost as if whoever was causing it was actively searching him out
Draco was sitting in the Three Broomsticks, butter beer in hand when it finally happened
He felt the heat wave first
Then the beads of sweat slowly forming on his head
His eyes flicked about frantically as his friends watched him with concern
When his eyes finally landed on the culprit, he knew
A wave of cool ran over him and for the first time in his life, Draco wasn’t shivering against a sweater, or sweating like a mad man
He felt
Right
“Hi.” He says, dazed as he stares at his soulmate in awe
Lorenzo Berkshire
The Red Strings of Fate
Enzo couldn’t remember a time when he couldn’t see the red strings twisting, knotting, winding around everyone he knew
They always started out the same
Tied in a neat bow around someone’s pinky before looping off into the distance
Occasionally, he’d see two people, their strings meeting, tying them together
Theirs always had a mesmerizing gold sheen
It fascinated him
His own parents’ strings trailed off in opposite directions
Not that he’d ever say anything about it
He knew there were others like him
People who could see the strings
Advertising their love matching services
Always able to tell if people were compatible or not
Enzo never said a word
At Hogwarts, Enzo often heard the Slytherin girls chatter about how romantic the idea was
Having a soulmate out there, tied to you forever
Enzo smiled, knowing that Pansy’s string was connected to one Blaise Zabini
And Astoria’s string lead to Matteo Riddle
In second year, he’d let out an unattractive snort, seeing his cousin Draco’s string connect to Hermione Granger
He’d almost let it slip right then and there
But still, he kept quiet, subtly leading his friends in the right direction
Even if it meant “accidentally” locking Draco and Hermione in the potions storeroom without their wands
It wasn’t until much later that Enzo realized he’d never really paid all that much attention to the string tied to his own finger
What if they didn’t believe in the strings?
What if they didn’t want to be found?
One night, when his dorm mates were asleep
He tugged on the red string, feeling the taunt pull on the other end
He didn’t really expect much
He’d seen people’s strings lead off over the horizon, end no where in sight
He knew it was totally plausible to never see his soulmate
But it would be nice
Sometimes at night, when his roommates were all asleep and he was still wide awake, he’d roam the halls, following the string
It always seemed to take him the same way, up the winding staircases until he found himself outside an ever familiar common room door
He wasn’t stupid
He knew his soulmate had to be in there, but still, he never searched beyond those quiet nights, the portraits on the walls looking on silently
It all changes though, the day he feels his pinky finger tug a bit as a stranger sits down next to him in potions
“You don’t mind, do you?” The breathy voice asks
Enzo is too busy staring at the string connecting their fingers, a familiar golden sheen glimmering between them, to answer
When he looks up, he finds pretty eyes looking back, a small smile tugging on pink lips
“The portraits are quite chatty you know. I wondered if you’d try to come find me, but figured it was best to take matters into my own hands.”
A soft blush rises to his cheeks as he looks sheepishly at his soulmate
“So should I lock us in a storage room without our wands now? Or can we skip that step?”
Enzo lets out bark of laughter before quickly getting a hold of himself
After years of following other people’s strings, he was glad someone had followed their string to him

Warnings: Mentions of Death, neglect, torture, use of protego diobolica and attempted murder
(A/N: Crossover with the current timeline and Muzan of the alternative timeline feelings towards Y/n is only one-sided.)
The Slytherin lady and the chosen one were lock in a ferocious duel however being trained by her father at a young age she easily overpowered Harry. She later apperated back to where her pathetic excuse of a brother was. It continues as they were trying to kill the man she saw earlier, but oddly strange he is not easy to kill.
Y/n then sees someone she hasn't seen in a very long time. Her duel against Harry was almost an hour. She recognize her sister who is about to turn back into a human approaching for their brother. The Slytherin lady then flies to her into a black mist. Through those moments Nezuko was turning back into a human from her gaining the memories when she was a demon. Her memories when she was human. The night Muzan Kibutsuji killed her mother and her other siblings while Tanjiro is away. She later regain back her identity. When this happened, Y/n appears in front of her while her twin looks in shock. “Y/n??” she asks as the Slytherin lady smirks. “Hello, Nezuko...” she says in a monotone.
While this is going on. Tanjiro, the Hashira, and Tamayo then continue to fought against Muzan. The Demon King was far too strong. With Y/n and Nezuko with the Slytherin girl then pointing her wand at her. “Tanjiro can say goodbye to his precious favorite sister....” she then says as she was about to cast a spell. That is until she hears a the sound of a biwa as diverts her attention towards where her pathetic excuse of a brother was. Shoji doors were at the bottom of him and everyone. They some them open making each slayer fall and of course Muzan and Tamayo. Nezuko scream calling out to their brother while the Slytherin lady smirks before turning into black mist following them. This is going to be interesting however what she didn't know Draco and Harry witnessed everything unfolded as they were surprise as they decide to ask help from someone but not somebody back in their home dimension but rather those from a different timeline. They then made their way to the gate way leading to the alternative timeline.
5 minutes later....
They found themselves on America?! The Wizarding World in this country is more strict back on England. They found themselves at a mansion. Harry and Draco say two figures the first being similar to their Y/n except she seems calm and the other similar to the man they saw from before except he has white hair. The two then notice them as the Slytherin lady's look alike look at her in surprise. “Potter, Draco I didn't expect you would come around here.” she says as the man beside her glares daggers at the blonde Slytherin as if he wants to kill him. Y/n then notice this as she narrows her eyes at him. “Dear, no....” she says in a warning tone.
He then huffs as he crosses his arms. The Slytherin lady sighs. “Sorry, about my husband. Draco, you shouldn't have come. You knew how much Muzan wants to kill you.” she then carefully says as the two look at them surprise. Wait? The man who stand right beside her was her husband in this timeline and not to mention he wants to kill Draco’s counterpart in this timeline. For what reason?
Harry then clears his throat. “Actually we are not the way you know. We are actually from another timeline and we need your help.” he says as this time Y/n and Muzan are surprise. The Slytherin lady then read their minds while the former Demon King then sniff them to see if they are telling the truth to which they are. The chosen one and the blonde Slytherin start to explain about the timeline they came from to which Y/n and Muzan frown. “A timeline where father died and I gotten crazy trying to kill everyone in mine and my husband's home dimension. Just to make them feel the pain I felt.” the Slytherin lady then says as her husband hums. “So in your timeline I was one of the people that my wife's counterpart wants to be killed. Well, that's strange and a bit upsetting.” he says as he refers to the last part that his counterpart didn't knew Y/n. “We only need your help, Y/n. In other to stop the version of yourself from our timeline on what she was doing.” Draco then says as he looks down. “We also need your father's help as well. I know he's the only one who can calm you both down when you're angry.” Harry adds as the two were surprise. “You need mine and my father's help?” The Slytherin lady then questions as the two then nod. Y/n sighs before they then took a portkey to England. Pretty much they appear at the forest when no one could see them. When they came to the location they arrived at Spinner's End.
The former Potions Master then notices them. “Y/n, Muzan...” He says a bit surprise to see his daughter and son-in-law. He later notice Harry and Draco. “You and Draco as well, Potter.” Severus then finishes as he crosses his arms. The Slytherin lady alongside with her husband looks at him. “Dad, we need your help.” she then says.
They then explain to the former Potions Master about what's going on. At that Severus cross his arms. “So in this alternative timeline. I died, Y/n’s counterpart wanting to kill the people in her and her husband’s home dimension. With my son-in-law’s counterpart not knowing my daughter and of course was one of the people she wants to kill.” he then says as slowly starts taking the information that he was given. “Figuring that my daughter's counterpart wouldn't be able to calm down if it was herself trying to understand. Well, she seems to calm down around me.” He then adds. The chosen one then looks at him. “Will you help us, sir? We can't risk of losing her.” he pleads.
The former Potions Master then thought for a moment before he then sighs. “Alright, I'll help you.” he then answers as that made the two males look relieved that Snape of this timeline is able to help them. Muzan then looks at his wife. “Are you sure you don't want me to come along?” he asks as he holds her hands. Y/n then gives him sad look. “I really want you to come but we couldn't risk about your other self to know that you were my soulmate and the part that were married. As we know our counterparts don't know each other.” she then says as Muzan sighs they have a choice. “Alright, but promise you'll come back safe.” he says. “I will. I promise.” the Slytherin lady then says.
Afterwards, they then open the gateway to the other timeline. The former Demon King hopes that his wife would be safe. To where Y/n’s counterpart was, they then end up in a place that has a lot rooms and shoji doors everywhere like a big maze. Harry was surprise to know that the Slytherin lady he knew would follow her brother here. As they then observe from a far to see Demon Slayers attacking Lower Moon Demons at easily cutting off each Demons head. From a far they also Y/n (Bad ending) torturing a Demon Slayer who dare stand in her way from making her brother suffer the pain she felt.
Y/n (Good ending) and Severus have invisibility cloaks around them to avoid anyone from knowing that they are around. Throughout each battle in the Infinity Fortress, the Slytherin Lady (Bad Ending) attempt to kill everyone but she was thwarted by unknown to her (her other self from another timeline). However, unknowingly the Demon King saw her every attempts but he wasn't mad. Quite the opposite he knew she wants to kill Tanjiro to make him regret for sacrificing her to save himself and his other siblings.
After each, Upper moon was killed but Nakime and Kaiguku are the last of them. However, Y/n (Bad Ending) continue her attempts to kill everyone but she was still thwarted. Her several attempts made Muzan feel something he hadn't felt before. He somehow found himself falling in love with the Kamado’s so-called black sheep. Not only those attempts to make everyone suffer her pain that she felt. The Demon King was later confront by Tanjiro and Giyū. “Persistent.” He then says not feeling any regret for killing a lot of innocent people. “You’re all seriously persistent. And it bores me.” He adds as the that stun the two Demon Slayers. “It sickens me from the bottom of my heart. Whenever you open your mouth, you only remember that one dumb motion about avenging your parents, kids, or siblings.” Muzan later admits as Tanjiro still looks stunned by what he's saying. “What are you saying?" He then asks at the Demon King look at him. “Look at it this way, being killed by me is the same as encountering a great calamity. You can't get revenge on natural disasters. No matter how many lives it takes away, rain, winds, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes. You don't need to think hard about it.” He then says as the two Demon Slayers just remain silent. “You can't bring dead humans back to life. Why not stop fussing over this issue all the time and quietly live to earn your daily wages. Why can't you do that? Most humans live that life. The Demon Slayers are an assembly of deviants. There's only a reason and I'm tired of dealing with deviants. I'm the only one really wants to put an end to all this.” Muzan then says. There was a long period of silence. Before Tanjiro could says something the three of them were interrupted when someone cackle. Black mist then came around and stood in the other side of the room it later then morph to Y/n (Bad Ending) as she looks at the three of them with her eyes narrowed. The Slytherin lady (Bad Ending) then looks at the Demon King. “You have no shame. To me losing my father even though we aren't related by blood. He treated me decently and some people in the Wizarding World too. I no longer return to this world considering on how greedy, arrogant, and selfish they are towards me. Just taking things for granted.” She then rants before looking at her pathetic excuse of a brother. “Since the day I was sacrifice. I was really a fool to wait you, the rest of our so-called ‘family’, and everyone else to notice me but only paying attention Nezuko. That day change everything for me. Throughout the years I was living with my father, the hate I felt towards everyone here continue to grow. When Dad was still alive I have no intention to return here to get revenge on everyone. Even though, I've been familiar with the Unforgivable Curses and the Dark arts spells he taught me. I've only used them when necessary.” Y/n (Bad Ending) then says as the three look at surprise.
The Slytherin lady (Bad Ending) then narrows her eyes. “Vengeance is mine. You and Nezuko don't deserve to live a peaceful life...” she then says to Tanjiro.
Giyū then looks at the burgundy-haired boy. “Keep your guard up.” he then tells. Y/n (Bad Ending) was about to cast a spell before somebody disarm her wand like earlier. The daughter of Severus Snape (Bad Ending) then growls to see who did it. The person then remove the invisibility cloak. She and the other three were surprise. It was Y/n (Good ending), Draco then came around. “You really need to stop. I know what you're feeling right now. But, father's death really affected you to the point you want to get your revenge on everyone here.” The Slytherin lady (Good ending) then says as her other self then grit her teeth. “Nice try, Harry....” she then says. Y/n (Good ending) then sighs. “You really think this is someone under the guise of polyjuice potion but I am actually you from another timeline.” She then took a pause. “A timeline where father is alive....” The Slytherin lady (Good ending) says that made double then pick up her wand as she kept her head down. “A timeline.... Father is still alive, huh? Well, that's something is going to make me mad here.” she then says as she looks up. The blonde Slytherin then looks at her. “Y/n, you need to stop what you're doing. This isn't the way...” he then says. The Slytherin lady (Good ending) then stood next to him. “He’s right you need to stop. Revenge is not going to make you feel better. It's just going to make things worse.” she then says.
Tanjiro then slowly walk up but he maintain his distance from his other younger sister. “Y/n, please you have to stop this." He then says as the daughter of Severus Snape (Bad Ending) then glares at him. “Well, I would be with you right now if you were to treat me decently. But none of you never deserve my forgiveness and kindness.” she then says before then places her hand against the bottom of her left eye. “I got this scar because of you that day and of course the hatred started to grow there. So I have a hard time trusting anyone except some people.” Y/n (Bad Ending) then rants.
The Slytherin lady (Bad Ending) then continues to glare at her brother. “Ever since, father adopted me. I only felt resentment towards everyone here in this world. I take a lot after father but I never let everyone’s words ruin me but unlike you. I have friends and people who care about me for who I am. Severus Snape was my father and having the same filthy blood as you and Nezuko make me hate other Muggle-borns at school. I disregard the Kamado last name and embrace the surname Snape. Everyone in Slytherin like being around me despite my status as a Muggle-born as I'm different from the rest. Everyone (except Pansy Parkinson).” she then adds as her brother keeps his guard up but he was ridden with guilt on the inside.
The Demon Slayer stares at his sister. “Y/n” He calls out as he feels the guilt of ignoring his beloved sister. “I'm sorry” He says making his sister scoff. “Your pleadings are no use to me now.” She says bitterly.
Draco then narrows his eyes at Tanjiro. “No matter how many times you apologize to her. It's not going to work. You really don't know her as much as I did growing up with her.” he then says. He then the others later here huff as they look at her. “Do you know me, Draco? Well, you don't know much about me.” she then says as the blonde Slytherin looks at her worriedly. Y/n (Good ending) knew that the thought of losing her father horrifies her, but in her timeline she was able to save him on time. However in this one she didn't. That's the reason why her other self was desperate to take her revenge on everyone in the dimension she originally came from.
“It may escape the notice of all of you. But life is unfair.” The Slytherin lady (Bad Ending) then says as she looks at the Demon King. “Life is not the way as we see it as there are times things go out of our control. Life is cruel. Fate is cruel. It's not always we get what we want.” she then adds as it seem to anger Muzan but it didn't but he was rather stun instead of being angry which never happened before. “She really takes after her father.” The blonde Slytherin then mutters. Y/n (Good ending) then gives her other self a sympathetic look. “Father’s death really affected you....” She says in a sad tone as the Slytherin lady (Bad Ending then turn to look at her. “You have no idea.....” she then says. Giyū then looks at her. “You need to stop this stupid revenge as it wasn't worth it.” he says as that anger the daughter of Severus Snape (Bad ending). The Slytherin lady (Good ending) sighs as she narrows her eyes at the Water Hashira. “You are not helping. It only made it worse.” she then says as her other self seems angry. “Stupid? Stupid?! What's so stupid about to make everyone in this world to feel the pain I felt?!” she then snaps.
Draco knew he had stop her. “This has to stop now. What ever it is you're going through. We'll fix together, me and you. Just like we've always done.” he then sang as that made Y/n (Bad ending) look at him. “No! This has to stop now. This thing where you think that you've been my friend. And don't even hear how you condescend. The way you've always done.” She then sang not wanting to listen to her childhood friend. The burgundy hair has to do something. “Y/n, listen.” he then starts. “I’m listening.” She then answers when her brother does it. “I know it isn't true.” Tanjiro then sang. “Isn’t it?” She mockingly questions. “Just look into my eyes now.” he then sings as his sister avoids looking at him. “Well?” she then says. “I know you feel it too.” The burgundy-haired boy then sang. “Perhaps I do.” she then sings as she looks at him coldly. “Y/n, listen.” Tanjiro then sings. “I’m listening.” she then says as she crosses her arms while rolling her eyes. “I swear it's not too late.” He then sings while keeping his eyes on her. “So before another line gets crossed and everything we've had is lost. Just.... wait.” He sings as the word ‘Wait’ made her to immediately look at him in disbelief before she frowns. “No, I won't wait.” she mutters before Y/n (Bad ending) then proceeds walking in between her pathetic excuse of a brother, Water Hashira, and the Demon King. She then looks at Tanjiro and Giyū. “There’s a line between the winners,” she starts before looking at Muzan. “and the losers.” she finishes before turning to look at her other self and Draco. “There’s a line between the chosen and the rest.” she then sings as she looks to the side. “And I've done the best I could, but I always known where we stood.” she then sings before looking down at her shoes. “Me here with the luckless.” The Slytherin lady sings before she then looks at her brother and the Water Hashira. “You there with the blessed and line between the beggers and the choosers.” she then sings before she turn around to face the Demon King. “Is a line you've never let quite ignore.” she sings then looks up at the ceiling before reaching out with her hand. “How I've tried to jump that great divine but I've never got the chances you were given.” she sings before turning to look at Tanjiro once more. “You don't how much I've been denied. Well, I'm not being patient anymore.” she then sings before she raises her arm with her wand in her hand and casts the spell which is just as dangerous as Fiendfyre. The Protego Diobolica spell. “I’m crossing the line!" she then sings as her other self proceeds to fire a spell at her but she dodges it. “And I'm done holding back. So look out, clear the track. It's my turn!” she sings out loud. Before she creates a circle of blue flames before she proceeds to make them flow along with her movements. “I’m taking what's mine!” she sang before looking at her brother before firing a spell at him but he manages to dodge it. The Slytherin lady (Bad ending) then looks at the Demon King before firing a spell but he manages to dodge it. “Every drop, every smidge. If I'm burning a bridge let it burn!” she then sings before she flies up surprising the three (except her other self and Draco). “But I'm crossing the line!” She then sings as she turns to look at them. “And for us, if we're over. That's fine!” She then proceeds to leave. “I’m crossing the line.” she then sings as she looks at them before she then flies out of the room into black mist.
Y/n (Good ending) was surprise as she knew that she did master this spell but she rarely use it. The blonde Slytherin looks surprise before he then looks at her. “We have to get out of here.” he suggests as he could see that Muzan then proceeds to leave the room. To which made Tanjiro yell after him as he and Giyū go after him.
Timeskip hours later....
Kaigaku was killed along side with Nakime. The Infinity Fortress collapse as everyone immediately leave when Yushiro tried to turn it against the Demon King as the battle of between the Demon Slayers and Muzan Kibutsuji continues. Nakime was killed in the hands of her master. However, a certain someone knew she had to immediately kill everyone. Y/n then was about to cast the killing curse at her brother while he was fighting against Kibutsuji. Her other self, Harry, Draco, and Severus knew they had to stop her. The chosen one had been involve of thwarting most of his friend's attempts. Tamayo was killed when she sacrifice her life on letting Muzan absorb her to which he absorb the drugs to weaken him.
Severus then casts the patronus charm non-verbally as seeing his patronus would calm his daughter's counterpart. When he did the patronus came out in the form of doe. It immediately made it's way towards her but when it passes through the remaining alive Demon Slayers as they seem shock. When it whirl around the burgundy-haired boy and the Demon King which surprise them as they along with everyone else watch as it then made it way towards Y/n (Bad ending) as she then stop as she immediately put her wand down seeing her father's patronus.
The former Potions Master then took off the invisibility cloak as he came to approach his daughter's counterpart as Y/n (Good ending) watch as her father approach her other self as she watches the scene. When he finally did, the Slytherin lady (Bad ending) fell on her knees as she doesn't know whether or not is she seeing things. D-Dad?” she then questions in a quiet voice.
Severus then has a soft look on his face. “Revenge is not the answer, Y/n. It just will make the pain worse, sweetheart.” he tells her as he kneels down to hug her. When he did, she her arms around him to which she later breaks down crying. The former Potions Master was rubbing the back of his daughter's counterpart. “Even though the me you knew was dead but I have a feeling he forgotten to tell you something.” he says in a soft voice as Y/n (Bad ending) looks at him. “Even though, I'm gone. I'll always be with you no matter what. In your heart.” he says as the Slytherin lady (Bad ending) look at him. Everyone else watch as the moment unfold. Tanjiro was surprise this man was Severus Snape. The one who raised his sister after she disappear when she was 5 years old.
Harry and Draco were relieved that she finally stop. The blonde Slytherin then made his way towards the two. Severus then pull away before then wipes Y/n (Bad ending)'s tears with his hand. The former Potions Master then notice Draco was there so he stood up and move to join his daughter of his timeline while the Slytherin lady (Good ending) watch her other self and the blonde Slytherin. “Y/n, I was worried if you don't stop. I would ended up losing you.” he says as his childhood friend look at him in shock. “Dray, I....” she was interrupted when Draco hug her. “I like you, Y/n Snape. No love you, for a long time ever since when we we're kids.” he confesses as Y/n (Bad ending) looks at him surprise. “I.... I.... I love you, too, Draco malfoy.” she then confesses to him. At the confession between the two. Muzan can't help but feel jealous run through him while the burgundy-haired boy could smell the jealousy coming from him.
Severus who is watching then gives Draco a warning look. The blonde Slytherin then felt it before he sweat drop. If his godfather of his timeline is still alive he would have give him a warning as well. Y/n (Good ending) sighs at her father's behavior before giving her other self a proud smile. In the timeline, she never knew her husband. Speaking of him, Muzan’s counterpart then look at her. She just gives him a soft yet sad smile. The Demon King's face turn red at that. Y/n’s alternative self just smile at him as if she knew him.
The two then pull away as the blonde Slytherin then help the Slytherin lady (Bad ending) stand up. When he did, he pulls her into a kiss to everyone's shock which broke Muzan's heart. Y/n (Good ending) was happy for her other self as she saw the surprise and pale expression of her brother's counterpart. She narrows her eyes at him. “You really should know that she did have feelings for Draco. I did as well..... However, used to.” she then admits but she's not giving hints that Muzan of her timeline was the one she ended up with.
The new couple later pulls away from one another. Draco then smiles at her to which Y/n (Bad ending) smile back at him. She then looks at her brother before she narrows her eyes at him. The Demon Slayer then looks at her. “Y/n, I-” he stop when his sister raise her hand. “Well, getting my revenge on you and Nezuko is not worth it to me anymore. I'm going to continue to live for my father's sake and I would no longer return to this dimension to remain in the world where I belong.” she then says rather coldly at him as Tanjiro and everyone else (except Draco, Harry, her other self, and Severus) were surprised. “Y/n, please....” the Demon Slayer begs as his sister then continues to glare at him. “You did this to yourself and you realize it when it's too late. But as I said earlier, life is unfair. Fate is cruel. It's not always we get what we want. Life is not the way as we see it as there are times things go out of our control. I hate to tell you, but this has to be the way it has to be.” she then says. The Slytherin lady (Bad ending) then looks at her lover and of course Harry. Not before turning to look at her other self as she gives her a grateful smile before she then disapperate with Draco and the chosen one.
Y/n (Good ending) alongside with everyone else watch as they leave. At that moment Tanjiro realize he lost his sister. Forever. The Slytherin lady (Good ending) then open a passage way to her home timeline as her father later walk up to her as the remaining Demon Slayers, Muzan, and her brother's counterpart look at her but she just narrows her eyes at him. Before they both enter the portal afterwards it closes after they left.

mysterious thing about love | a dramione novel on ao3
Hermione Granger had never believed herself to be the type of witch to break into the Department of Mysteries in a drunken bid for some kind of happy future. She also couldn’t have imagined waking up in a reality in which she is happily engaged to Draco Malfoy, and finding a kind of companionship that Ron had never shown her. As Draco attempts to help her get back, she finds herself falling for the man who worries if his fiancé will ever return.
words: 6,163
chapters: 2/?
tags: alternate universe, soulmates, love spell/potion, slow burn, eventual happy ending, explicit sexual content
excerpt below:
The entire Ministry seemed to be asleep, and for that, Hermione was thankful. She tiptoed down the hall toward the gates, and a gentle push on them was enough for them to open. After glancing over her shoulder to ensure she was still alone, she slipped between them and made her way to the lifts. Hermione stepped into the first open lift and pressed 9. It started with a jolt before lowering her into the Department of Mysteries.
The Room of Doors loomed before Hermione like a sick carnival game. Twelve black doors broke up a narrow hallway of black bricks and blue flamed candles. The air was cold and smelled slightly of mildew as if no one had been down there for years. Slowly, Hermione made her way down the row of doors. None bore handles or names; it was up to her to find the right door. And to figure out how to get inside.
Hermione took her time at each door, studying it. If she opened and then closed one, all of the doors would shift positions, making it impossible to use the process of elimination. She had one chance to make the right decision, which terrified her.
An unknown amount of time passed as she debated which door she would try. Her eyes kept returning to the door at the end of the hall, illuminated by brilliant blue flame. Perhaps it was Hermione’s imagination, or what remained of the alcohol in her system. Still, she felt drawn to that door above the rest. Cautiously, she approached and placed one of her palms flat against the wooden door. The wood hummed beneath her hand, and she swore she could hear a voice on the other end. It sounded smooth, like honey, and confident. The voice belonged to a man and felt familiar, but she couldn’t match it with any face from her memory. All that Hermione knew was that, upon hearing it, she wanted nothing more than to be on the other side of the door.
As if it sensed her wish, the door loosened in its frame. Hermione gently nudged it open and stepped inside, drawn by the smell of parchment, spearmint toothpaste, and rich mahogany wood. Rather than finding black tile and blue flames, Hermione found herself surrounded by something out of a children’s book. The floor was a vibrant pink carpet, and the walls were white marble that reached up to vaulted ceilings. Pink lights clung to the ceiling like the candles in the Great Hall at Hogwarts, and tiny bubbles floated through the air.
