Peter Cushing: Vampire Slayer, Master Sleuth and Monster Creator
Tumblr media
Source: BBC
From his portrayal as the mad Baron Frankenstein to relentless vampire hunter Van Helsing, Peter Cushing delivered captivating and iconic performances throughout his film career. He was usually cast opposite fellow horror icon Christopher Lee. The two would share the screen one final time as co-narrators in a documentary about Hammer Films, "Flesh and Blood: The Hammer Heritage of Horror," shortly before Cushing's death in 1994.
Peter Wilton Cushing was born on May 26, 1913 in Kenley, in Surrey, England. The son of George and Nellie Cushing, he was the youngest of three boys. His father worked as a quantity surveyor. Cushing worked in the same field as his father, as a surveyor's assistant before he became an actor.
Cushing caught the acting bug after watching his aunt perform in live theater. Cushing applied for and won a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His career began in 1935 with four years performing with the Worthington Repertory Company before heading out to Hollywood to try his luck in film.
Cushing was cast in bit roles, his first in James Whale's "The Man in the Iron Mask" in 1939. Other small roles included the 1940 film "A Chump at Oxford," starring the comedy team, Laurel and Hardy. In 1941, Cushing made his way to Broadway in "The Seventh Trumpet."
Cushing returned to England and joined the Entertainment National Service Association which provided entertainment to British troops during World War II. He married actress Helen Beck, who co-starred with him in Noel Coward's "Private Lives," in 1943. The two were married up until her death in 1971.

In 1948, Cushing toured with Lawrence Olivier's Old Vic theater company and landed a role in Olivier's 1948 film version of Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Cushing first met Christopher Lee on the set of "Hamlet." Lee had a bit part and Cushing was cast in a minor role.
In 1952, Cushing got the part of Mr. Darcy in a 1954 BBC production of"Pride and Prejudice." He won a BAFTA award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Winston Smith in a BBC adaptation of George Orwell's dystopian classic "Nineteen Eighty-Four."
Cushing's debut with Hammer Films as well as his first co-starring role opposite Christopher Lee was not in "Dracula" but in 1956's "Frankenstein," playing Victor Frankenstein with Lee as the monster. The two would team up to thrill and chill audiences again in Hammer's 1958 production of "Dracula." Cushing's tough, tenacious Van Helsing and Lee's larger than life Count Dracula were a dynamic on screen duo. The two were also close friends in real life. Both Cushing and Lee had an appreciation for ... Warner Bros. cartoons.
Cushing went on to star in many more feature films. He reprised his role as Baron Frankenstein four times and as Van Helsing only once in 1960's "Brides of Dracula." He also portrayed master sleuth Sherlock Holmes in many films - Hammer's 1959 adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and in many BBC adaptations during the 60's.
Cushing's roles outside of horror included playing a priest in a thriller "Violent Playground" in 1958 and a bank manager in 1961's "Cash on Demand." He also played Dr. Who on British TV in 1965's "Dr. Who and the Daleks" and "Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150" in 1966. Cushing's other horror features include: "The Gorgon" (1964), "The Skull" (1965) and "Blood Beast Terror" (1967).

Cushing continued working in the horror genre throughout the 1970's. He played opposite his friend Christopher Lee in "Dracula A.D. 1972" (1972), "The Satanic Rites of Dracula"(1973) and "Horror Express" (1973). He would go on to appear in a series of unremarkable movies such as the kung fu/horror movie "The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires" (1974) and "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (1974). In 1977, Cushing landed a role in the surprise blockbuster, "Star Wars," as Grand Moff Tarkin. Cushing was originally considered for the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
During the 1980's Cushing took less roles after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1982. He broadened his acting horizons with appearances in two slapstick comedies, "Top Secret!" and "Airplane" in 1980. He once again played Sherlock Holmes in 1984's "The Masks of Death."
Cushing retired from acting during the late 1980's and published "Past Forgetting: Memoirs of the Hammer Years" in 1988. In 1989, Cushing was honored by being made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. A week after filming his final project and his last appearance on-screen with Christopher Lee, Cushing passed away on August 11, 1994. He was 81.

Every new year I think about how it might be nice to return to the salad days of blogging a little about things I’m watching or reading. Then I slip into the part of my seasonal depression where I’m rarely not lying on the floor until April and my thoughts of blogs turn to thoughts of our bad world, my lifetime of numerous regrets, how tired I am all the time, raccoon liberation, and my increasing understanding of the villainous characters from sci-fi literature who are trying to Freejack younger bods.
So while I doubt this will be an ongoing concern, here’s some bloggin:
CRAWL (2019)
Two things I would’ve put into this movie about two people hiding behind a sort of pipe fence from the alligators that are in their basement and want to bite them is a scene where they hear an unusual page turning sound and slowly realize that a gator is reading a how-to plumbing book and they have to escape before it gets to the chapter about removing pipes. And I would’ve had the gators, as a last resort, throw their gator eggs through the pipe fence, and as they break, baby gators would hatch and attack.
I was not exactly rooting for the alligators while watching this movie, I guess I just feel they could’ve tried harder.
THE PROFESSIONALS (1966)
This is kind of like SUICIDE SQUAD with aged western hunks. So like Burt Lancaster is Harley Quinn and uh, Jack Palance is the Joker* (I don’t really remember anything about the Suicide Squad movie at this point other than the couple that sat next to me when I saw it in the theater sang and danced to every song on the soundtrack and I now - perhaps totally unfairly- think of the two of them as the audience that all contemporary pop culture is geared towards).
There’s a lot of really good tough guy one liners in this movie. To the point where I imagined the anxiety I would feel if I was one of the professionals and had to talk knowing that all the other pros would have a cool comeback.
Me: Good night, Lee Marvin.
Lee Marvin: Nothing good about it.
Me to me: Damn he got me again.
*I realized after writing this that Palance is killed by the Joker in the Tim Burton Batman movie, so I apologize for making this joke.
DETECTIVE COMICS 339 (1965)
This comic has the same plot and many of the same layouts as one of Jiro Kuwata’s Batman stories and I’m assuming one is an adaptation of the other, though the laziest possible Google search doesn’t tell me which one came first.
A scientist feels bad that he grew up wimpy and boring so he builds a machine that gives him the traits of animals for a limited time so that he can become tough and interesting like your average animal. It’s all good when he gets like the flying powers of an eagle or the cool vibes of a snake, but when he gets the strength of an ape, the ape also gets the scientist’s intelligence and declares war on humanity. Kuwata’s story is longer and spends a lot of time on the ape’s motivations and ends with Robin being like “If I was an ape, I’d also want to get revenge on humanity.” So it’s much better, but this one ends with Batman saying that they’re going to send the ape to live in the jungle so he can hang out with other apes and the scientist is like “I wish I could get sent to a human jungle where other humans would be forced to hang out with me,” which is also a pretty good ending.
The most interesting thing about this is seeing how both artists interpreted the same material and it made me wish that every single Batman comic was just an adaption of this story.

IP MAN 4: THE FINALE (2019)
I went to go see the new Terrence Malick movie (I will possibly never get over the blurb on the Instagram ad I saw for it that said, “CINEMA AT IT’S MIGHTIEST AND HOLIEST. A MOVIE YOU ENTER LIKE A CATHEDRAL OF THE SENSES,” because it’s like something Dracula would say and you’d be like “Take it easy, Dracula. This is dramatic even for you”), but I was already feeling very sad and was nervous it would make me even sadder. So when I saw that Ip Man was playing, I decided to watch that instead. Then it opens with Ip Man being told he has terminal cancer.
Ip Man goes to San Francisco to try to register his jerk teen son for high school, but can’t without a recommendation letter from the Chinese Benevolent Association (which is made up of martial arts masters), so the main plot of the movie is him trying to get this recommendation letter. While, of course, dealing with racism against Chinese immigrants (it’s suggested in the film that the main cause of this prejudice is that Americans think Karate is better than Kung-Fu). The audience I saw it with (at like 5pm on a weekday in the mall) was kind of laughing at the entire movie and then when Donnie Yen beats up Scott Adkins (playing a racist American marine who’s a karate-expert and has a British accent) at the end, everyone started genuinely cheering.
I’m mostly curious if in trying to figure out what Ip Man was up to in his later life, the screenwriters heard he had a hard time getting his son a recommendation letter and were like “That’s it. That’s the film.”
THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY (1996)
I can’t remember if I saw this when it first came out, but I liked it so much when I watched it last week that I keep saying, “Yo, you seen Portrait of a Lady yet,” to people as if I’ve been in a coma since the 1996 awards season.

It might be difficult to believe right now, but there was a point — not too long ago, in fact — when Keanu Reeves wasn’t everywhere you looked.
The recent news that Reeves would return to lead yet another installment of The Matrix franchise seemingly puts an exclamation point on the 54-year-old actor’s professional resurgence after nearly a decade out of the spotlight.
From carrying a new action franchise (and becoming one of the most sought-after cameos in the industry), to making headlines in the gaming world, to reprising one of his most iconic roles after a 15-year hiatus, Reeves’ ubiquitous presence these days is one of Hollywood’s most pleasant surprises.
It’s also a fascinating look at how one big hit — in this case, his starring role in John Wick — can shake things up and remind audiences why we liked an actor so much in the first place.
Tumblr media
After rising to fame in the ’80s and ’90s with comedy hits like Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and its sequel (as well as 1989’s Parenthood), Reeves moved into action-hero territory with ’90s classics Point Break and Speed, along with a high-profile horror role in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Like most prominent actors, his career during that era had its share of mild highs and lows, with his 1995 romance film A Walk in the Clouds and 1997 supernatural thriller The Devil’s Advocate both earning critical acclaim, while sci-fi adventures Johnny Mnemonic and Chain Reaction were widely panned.
Then The Matrix came along and changed everything.
Reeves’ portrayal of a mild-mannered computer programmer who becomes the cyberpunk savior of humanity in a war against sentient machines turned him from a reliable (if not particularly exciting) male lead to the coolest action hero in Hollywood. The Wachowskis’ groundbreaking 1999 film changed the game for visual effects and cinematography with its innovative fight choreography and set pieces heavily influenced by Hong Kong cinema and Japanese animation while exploring themes that are still highly relevant (and excitedly discussed) 20 years later.
The Matrix would go on to win four Academy Awards while establishing itself as one of the greatest science-fiction films ever made, with Reeves as the face of what would soon become a massive franchise.
The Matrix - Original theatrical Trailer
Two sequels to soon followed, with The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions both hitting theaters in 2003 (a unique strategy, but one that seemed like an easy win given the first film’s success). The first of those sequels went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time worldwide, a record it held until Deadpool came along 13 years later.
At that point, Reeves was the star of one of Hollywood’s biggest, most visually stunning action franchises — and then, just a few years later, he seemed to fade into the background again.
In the years that followed, Reeves starred in a genre-spanning series of films peppered with indie darlings like The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and experimental projects like Richard Linklater’s rotoscoped adaptation of A Scanner Darkly. There were a few big-budget movies like the poorly reviewed remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still that arrived in theaters and quickly disappeared, but nothing approached the level of The Matrix franchise.
Man of Tai Chi - Officail Trailer (2013)
During this lull, Reeves found time for music, wrote a book, made his directorial debut in the under-appreciated martial-arts film The Man of Tai-Chi, and even produced a documentary about photography.
But things changed dramatically once again in 2014 when Reeves starred in a little-known action film directed by two former stuntmen called simply John Wick.
Much like The Matrix, John Wick drew inspiration from Hong Kong cinema, anime, and classic martial-arts movies for its tale of a former assassin who comes out of retirement when criminals kill his dog during a botched robbery. Directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch drew from their backgrounds to craft stunning fight sequences for the film that let Reeves carry each scene with his pensive stares and affinity for kung-fu filmmaking techniques, while simultaneously keeping the themes simple (revenge) and teasing the existence of a much larger world inhabited by its colorful cast of killers.
John Wick was a surprise hit, raking in more than $88 million worldwide on a meager (by Hollywood standards) budget of $20 million. It matched that box-office success with almost universally positive reviews, with some suggesting it was one of Reeves’ best performances to date. And just like that, Reeves was an action hero again.
JOHN WICK - Official Trailer #1 (2014)
Two sequels followed, and unlike The Matrix trilogy, the John Wick films — 2017’s John Wick: Chapter Two and 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum — only got more successful with each installment. The box-office returns increased with each sequel, and reviews got progressively more positive too (no small feat, given the first film’s 87% positive reviews), solidifying Reeves’ status as one of the hottest action stars in the industry all over again.
All it took was a black suit, a dead puppy, and a whole lot of bullets.
Given all of that, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Reeves is headed back to The Matrix universe (and Bill and Ted’s universe, for that matter). Between the success of the John Wick franchise to Reeves’ role in Cyberpunk 2077, one of the most anticipated video games of the upcoming year, to the calls for him to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to the frequent, real-life reminders that he might be one of the nicest people in Hollywood, there’s a strong argument to be made that Reeves is entering the best stage of his career so far as he approaches age 55.
It remains to be seen whether Reeves’ return to The Matrix can find the magic that the original film channeled, but with Lana Machowski behind the camera and Reeves in front of it — along with fellow Matrix veteran Carrie-Anne Moss — there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about taking the red pill and diving back into that sci-fi saga.
Reeves has already defied conventional wisdom by becoming an action hero so late in his career, but if there’s anything his trajectory has shown us, it’s that he’s the sort of actor who can surprise us in all the best ways.

The Big List
As far as I can tell there is no application to put my library into plain text so I’ll have to do this all manually... 1,255 Games*. Here we go (in Alphabetical)
*Actual amount is less due to hidden games and the such.
Now how did I do this? Well I used https://steamdb.info/ to get a list of all my Steam games. From there I just copied everything into Notepad++. I then deleted the easy bits (AppID, game) using find and replace. In find and replace I then used this code snippet \:.*?% and  \r\n\r\n to get rid of the rest of the useless filler. From there I got this usable text. This was a lot more enjoyable than going through and typing my whole library in manually.

The newest episode of Dracula’s Kung-Fu Theatre dropped last weekend. It features the movie “Heroes of Shaolin.” I developed the idea for the show, but left after about a year. "Heroes of Shaolin” was going to be my season finale. The movie is about a boy whose father is murdered. The killer takes in the boy and trains him to possibly one day get his revenge.
So I had been seeding this disgruntled viewer named Abby in these "Letters to Dracula" segments. It would turn out she's Abby van Helsing. She would come to kill Dracula, only to be turned into a vampire. Dracula takes her under his wing and trains her how to be a vampire.  The episode would end with her poised to be his new sidekick. But instead she stakes him and takes over the show. Cliffhanger! The "Magnificent Fist" episode was about Dracula eating a ginseng root, growing a gigantic fist, and fighting crime. In "The Guy with the Secret Kung Fu," Dracula is arrested for fishing without a license then is bailed out by Death in exchange for being a sidekick on the show. I'm sad it didn't work out, but I hope it's going okay with the new guys. It was an incredibly toxic work environment and my boss/producer kept pitching racist ideas. Things like pulling my eyelids down and speaking in a bad Chinese accent. Multiple times he told me the host character needed to be "more ret***ed." He lied to my face on multiple occasions (sometimes about the show, sometimes about other work-related things). It was not pleasant.
The company was going to be moving locations. He said he had a new place lined up. I asked if the new place would have space for the Dracula set. He said "Yes. Definitely." Later at a meeting, he said he didn't have a place lined up, he was looking at multiple places.
I watched the intro to a new show the company was working on. I asked who did the music. My boss said he made it. I complimented him on it, because I legitimately liked it. Months later, he brings his son by and introduces him as the guy who made that theme song.
He was constantly contradicting himself. All of his notes were very vague. "It needs to be outside of the box. More ret***ed. Less is more." When asked for specifics, he couldn't provide any.  When I pushed him to cite a specific example of where "Less is more" could be applied, he cited a scene where Dracula says his name and lightning strikes. Then he does it three more times. Then he said "That really sells the joke." Also, it was a joke he had pitched. Also, that’s not “Less is more.” That’s “More is more!”
It was a constant battle. I filmed a pilot. He liked it, but didn't like the costume or set. So we changed them and filmed a test scene. He gave it the thumbs up. I filmed the pilot, then suddenly he didn't like the script, though nothing had changed.
I worked on the show for a year. I had written 16 scripts. He wanted to go in a completely different direction with it. I was open to redoing it, but not scrapping the entire concept. I suggested doing a test screening. He said he knew better than me and kicked me off of it.
This has been eating away at me for over two years. There's way more to it than just this, but I needed to purge some of it or I was going to lose my mind. I think the breaking point was how there has been zero recognition of my contribution to the concept.
After I had left, the new guys told me that I would be getting a co-creator credit. I always assumed that wasn't going to happen. But I hoped I would at least get a mention in the special thanks. But I got nothing.
I had lunch with the new team the day the show premiered (my wife was leaving the company) and I wished them all good luck. They were all very nice and polite. But none of them mentioned that they were told not to give me a credit by their boss. (Not until the next day, anyway.)
It just hurts to put an entire year's worth of energy into something and to have that taken away from you and have no one acknowledge you. It's just shitty.  Again, I have no ill will against the new guys. They helped me on the pilot I made and I appreciated it. I hope the show does well! It just feels super weird to be completely unacknowledged.
