I'm not sure if this was asked before and I'm not sure if Sol acknowledges it in the story, but does Sol or Sin know that Ky has Gear Cells or was ever aware of it at all? I don't think they ever bothered to ask about his insane superhuman feat back in Revelator when they tried to align Justice in the right position for Asuka.
If Sol didn’t know Ky had Gear Cells before, he does now, due to Ky’s knowledge of Dragon Install and the fact Sol needs to awaken his powers.
But that’s hindsight.
Everything goes back to what Ky was dealing with prior to the events of GG2 Overture.
Ky was under pressure from the Conclave, they were threatening his family, and Ky had no other alternative than to rely on Sol to help solve his problem.
But was having a safe place for Dizzy and Sin to live Ky’s *only* problem?
Ky knew the implications of becoming a High King of Illyria beforehand... he didn’t even WANT to be King when they first offered him the position.
But, Sol isn’t the only person Ky was able to rely on.
Dr. Paradigm is party to the conspiracy, ever since he threw his academic hat in with Illyria, along with the other residents of Ganymede Island. Izuna too, since they became allies via Sol.
So, while the Valentine issue was temporarily resolved, at least where Illyria is concerned... Ky still needed some form of insurance.
So, the question is, where DID that Insurance come from?
Sol isn’t the type to spread knowledge on Gear Cells, and he is strongly against perpetuating that knowledge in any capacity... so that checks him off the list. Sin wouldn’t know barely anything about Gears, since he was just a 7-month-old kid at the time.
Dr. Paradigm is a different story, however... as is Dizzy. Dizzy would not hesitate to protect her loved ones if it meant sharing a secret or two.
Furthermore, when Sol first met Paradigm, Paradigm knew more about Gear Cells than even Sol did!
Paradigm is also not above sharing and gathering knowledge from other sources, one of which is Asuka R. Kreutz himself!
So, while I can’t yet answer the question in full... we at least have a wider net of people to consider who was involved with Ky’s connection to Gear Cells.
Ky’s knowledge on other topics, like the Cyprus Project, are also a mystery as well.
Of course, Ky being a King who knows such secret dealings, is to be expected NOW at this point!
Still, if Ky had spoken with Sol about it beforehand, I doubt Sol would have let him go through with it, for various reasons, biggest of which is becoming a potential enemy to mankind AS a Gear.
But Sol at least knows that Ky is not the type to hesitate when things are dire and options are limited... so that much can be expected from Ky.
In that sense, Ky is more reckless than Sol in some regards.

What can you make of Nagoriyuki's mask and what significance does it bare?
I used to think he was a human wearing a youkai mask that enhances his abilities to be able to fight evenly against Gears.
But since he is a vampire, I supported this theory of the mask being a limiter or something that helps regulate his power or blood magic. Nagoriyuki looks like a mentally-focused and disciplined person, so with that in mind, I don’t rightfully believe he was born as a vampire, he’s likely turned into one. As a vampire, it takes a lot of willpower and focus to control the urges of drinking blood.
I think he might’ve practiced in keeping his bloodlust dormant, but in a fight, the sight of blood may cause him to act out. So, maybe when wearing the mask, the mask keeps his vampiric urges suppressed and in check so that he doesn’t lose his composure in battle.
I doubt it is worn for show or to look cool (even though it is cool!), it’s probably similar to Dragon Install, a limiter to helps Sol Badguy maintain his human form. Maybe the mask is something to help Nagoriyuki maintain his humanity? That’s if he is not a naturally born vampire.
I may be wrong, so I might need some evidence to make the theory more convincing.
