Electrified Drum! by Mast3r-Rainb0w
Drum from the original "non-Z" Dragon Ball series, and a rather underappreciated villain of the franchise in general.  Don't let this fatty fool ya, he's quite the speedster!
Anyways, I just wanted to draw him here for no real good reason, lol. Enjoy the fanart!

Dragon Ball Z: Abridged Episode 13 Review
Originally posted on August 28th, 2015
It’s good to have stakes again.
Tumblr media
If the majority of Dragonball Z: Abridged’s fans had the same criticisms of “A Rose by Any Other Namek” that I did, then Team Four Star clearly took those complaints to heart, as “Dr. Briefs Made this Episode in a Cave… WITHABOXOFSCRAPS!” is a return to the strength shown at the beginning of the second season. There is a clear rededication to the tone and weight established in “Looks Like the Z Warriors Are Blasting Off Again,” and that rededication happens before we even get to the intro.
The obvious way they reestablish the stakes early on is through Krillin’s freakout at Vegeta’s arrival, but something more important happens before then: Krillin and Gohan have a funny conversation. This is what was fundamentally lacking in their storyline in “Rose,” as their “adventure” didn’t rely on character-driven action or humor at all; instead they all kind of stumbled along on a random planet, not advancing the story or their characters in any significant way. This time, only a minute and a half in and Team Bulma has landed on Namek, detected the Dragonballs, spotted the villain, and let Gohan reveal part of his character through conversation. It’s quick, simple, and, most importantly, character driven.
The rest of the episode focuses establishing the nature of the threats to Team Bulma. Vegeta’s increase in power thanks to his earthly defeat is shown in a clever scene that has him pulling out the literal handbook on understanding Saiyans, revealing that they gain a significant power boost when they almost die. He then proceeds to prove this to us by killing Cui, who clearly states that before this defeat, Vegeta and he were at an equal power level. Then we’re given an introduction to Freeza and his lackeys, Dodoria and Zarbon, in which they both threaten a village and are established as significantly more powerful than Team Bulma by the narrator. It’s a great scene, and it leaves us with just enough information to know that Team Bulma is unquestionably in over their heads. All that’s left to wonder is how they will cope in facing off against these overwhelming odds.
Rating: 4.5/5

Stray Observations
Narrator: “Our heroes have finally arrived on the planet Namek, where the sky is green, the grass is blue, and it’s boring as shit.”
Krillin: “Huh, you’re really sheltered, aren’t you?” Gohan: “I had to read an entire book about peach farming on the way here; you tell me.”
Though only mostly in the background, Krillin’s scream is hella impressive. Great work, Lanipator.
Krillin Owned: It’s at eleven now. Do I even need to specify what count we’re keeping track of now?
Krillin: “On the bright side, I no longer have to pee anymore.”
Good old Monty Python title cards.
Bulma: “What took you so long?” Krillin: “Something I should’ve taken care of a month ago.” … Bulma: “OH GOD IT’S EVERYWHERE!”
Roshi: “Could you speak up? I’m not wearing pants.”
The Popeye reference, like the Monty Python reference, feels really highbrow in this series.

Top 5 Game Series That Need The N.Sane Treatment
Crash Bandicoot was a series that hadn't been seen for years until the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy was revealed to the world. Thanks to this trilogy, not only was the franchise revitalized but we also got a sequel for Crash Warped in the form of Crash 4: It's About Time.
This is a recipe that could potentially bring games lost in obscurity back into the limelight but even a chance for new games to come. Here are some of my picks!
1. Jak and Daxter
Tumblr media
One of the games that seriously needs the N.Sane Trilogy treatment. Jak and Daxter was a game series made by Naughty Dog that would inspire many platforms after. It stars the Demolition Duo, Jak and his partner ottsel, Daxter, on incredible adventures that change in tone over each game. You begin with a goofy island adventure to a dark futuristic playground as new mechanics get introduced.
Out of the main trio which consists of Jak, Sly, and Ratchet, Jak was actually the first game I played amongst them. A series that needs a comeback especially with the Easter Eggs often seen in Ratchet and Clank games throughout the years.
Touch up the graphics into a different style depending on the game, the Precursor Legacy be a bit more cartoony in appearance like Crash 4, and then switch to a style similar to the N.Sane Trilogy for the darker games like Jak 2 and 3.
Adjust the controls to run smoother, change difficulty of certain games like lower the difficulty of Jak 2 a smidge and place an optional mode to play with the original difficulty.
This would lay down the groundwork for an actual proper sequel, Jak X feels more like a side game while Lost Frontier is a snore fest.
If Naughty Dog doesn't take this route and continues pushing out flavorless games, I suggest any decent company that can do should buy the rights to Jak and Daxter. This is a gold mine covered in dust that needs to come back!
2. Sly Cooper
Tumblr media
Yep! We're going to the other member of this once legendary trio, Sly Cooper. Sly Cooper was the second game series from Sucker Punch that I played, the first being Infamous series.
This game revolves around a group of thieves who steal from criminals and tend to get wrapped up in saving the world a few times or battling enemies out to end the bloodline of the main character, Sly Cooper, who comes from a legendary family of thieves.
Before the series disappeared into discontinuity, we had a total of 3 main games alongside one made by Sanzaru. Sanzaru's Thieves of Time was decent but midway World 3, the quality seriously declined and left fans with a very unsatisfied ending. Perfect for crossovers but terrible for the franchise.
Giving this game the N.Sane Trilogy treatment would not only give a more successful chance than attempts to make a movie, but it could to more proper sequel than Sanzaru's version. Use a design similar to Sanzaru's or go for a more rounded one like N.Sane Trilogy.
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart even had an Easter Egg with Sly in it too! Insomniac acknowledges that these game series still exist by dropping these little nuggets of nostalgia, take the hint and bring back the Legendary Playstation Trio!
3. Spectrobes
Tumblr media
Nintendo's alternate version of Pokemon. Spectrobes is a trilogy game series that debuted on the DS and last game was made for the Wii.
This series revolves around Rallen and Jeena, two members of the Nanairo Patrol, as they search for the fossils of creatures of light known as Spectrobes to find the planet devouring darkness known as Krawl.
You travel through various planets to uncover different kinds of fossils and some very interesting or whacky but loveable characters. It has elements similar to Fossil Fighters where you have to dig up fossils before awakening them. Care for your Spectrobes to battle the Krawl.
The evolving battle system, new mechanics, various locales and the unique design of each Spectrobe were something I loved but pretty sure many would like too. It even had a book and a mini series on YouTube! The game's graphics could take a route similar to Rayman Legends or Dragonball FighterZ.
Don't go for Jump Force please. We need actual expression than stiff faces and aggravating screams.
This is game series worth bringing back even if it just gets a remake.
4. Golden Sun
Tumblr media
Another Nintendo franchise that needs return from obscurity. Golden Sun was a JRPG that came along systems like the Gameboy Advance during a severe lack of games for it. It revolves around different groups of people who use Psynergy, their version of alchemy, to battle evil as they travel the realm of Weyward.
A great game series enriched by its many characters, lore, growing battle system such as Djnn and Summons to turn the tide in battles, unique story and all sorts of areas to explore.
The biggest dent to the franchise was Dark Dawn because of its questionable ending that left many players confused or dissatisfied despite the incredible graphics, plot and character interactions. After that no one has heard a single word about any sequel.
The N.Sane Treatment would not only bring the franchise back for fans both new and old but can actually fix the questionable ending for Dark Dawn. Graphic style, um, I guess something similar to Dragon Quest or maybe Persona. Persona would be the better option considering how you choose how the main character responds to certain situations.
This series has been done dirty and deserves a second chance like this.
5. Kid Icarus
Tumblr media
A Nintendo franchise that shows bringing back old games can revitalize a lost series.
This game series is at the bottom for a decent reason actually. Masahiro Sakurai has been hearing requests about porting one of the games, Uprising, to the Switch. Something that he sounds like he wants to do but there is a problem as he admits it would be difficult.
How Uprising is made for the 3DS such as the dual screens, and specific use of the touch screen for combat. Something that can't easily be translated to something like the Switch without decent changes.
The game revolves around the angel Pit, who fights the evil forces of the Underworld with assistance from his Goddess Palutena. Each game changes the rules of battle with the greatest being Uprising as you combat various creatures and even bosses revolve mostly around Greek mythology.
I think the N. Sane Trilogy can work with this. The first Kid Icarus and the second Of Myth and Monsters might be what could provide the missing pieces for the Uprising Switch Port Situation.
Both games could be completely restyled in a format that could be similar to Zelda since in these games, your options of weapons are limited and you have to think smart for particular puzzles.
They can be used to lay down a format that can built on for an Uprising Remake since Land Battles are one half of the essential gameplay. The graphics can be Uprising since it's already a perfect that just needs to be brushed up a bit.
When it comes to Super Smash Brothers, Sakurai worked hard to make characters like Minecraft Steve or Fighting Game fighters such as Ryu and Kazuya fit into the gameplay even if it meant changing about every hitbox and aspect of the stages. A little help can go a long way.
That's what I've got for now. If I find anymore games that need the N. Sane Trilogy then I'll put em in a new list. Until next time folks!

College Adventures Special Episode VI: Interview with Jeremiah Cortez (Dogs in Space)!
A bit more of a casual entry this time, but I 100% had to talk about my Writing for Animation class professor and creator of the amazing Netflix cartoon Dogs in Space, Jeremiah Cortez! Spoilers for S1 of Dogs in Space btw! (Please watch it, it’s great)
(Btw, his class is the setting for College Adventures Season 3 Parts 7, 8, and 11!)
Tumblr media
· For most of the semester he was under NDA about his series, so it was really tough hearing him say stuff like “Oh man, there’s the joke/character/scene in the show that’s SO good! I can’t tell you about it right now, but can’t wait for you all to see it!” so much.
· Nevertheless, he showed us a ton of character sheets for the show, and they were super-extensive!! There was so much detail in them for how every character dynamic in the whole show should play out, and it was really fun to see!
· Netflix really wanted him to cast a big-name celebrity as Cpt Garbage, but he managed to fight against that in order to find the right person instead. Some names thrown around included Seth Rogen and Will Ferrell!
· For the same reasons, Netflix was also very against hiring no-name David Lopez as Chonies, but Jeremiah insisted he was right for the job (and I agree!)
· Loaf was originally written to have a British accent, since he’s a British Bulldog!
· Apparently while recording her lines for Kira in the finale, Debra Wilson actually broke into tears! That’s dedication!
· Also, Kira wasn’t even going to be the antagonist of S1 at first! It was originally going to be an alien that the crew of the Pluto found. And his “evil” plan was to steal the dogs’ gene-alteration tech to splice himself and become strong enough to get revenge on the evil aliens who conquered his planet.
· One of the other producers went to Jeremiah and told him he wanted the S1 villain to be Laika instead- an abandoned dog with an anti-human agenda. Jeremiah initially turned him down because Laika wasn’t gene altered and would have died of old age long before the events of the show, so after 2 days of back-and-forth, they settled on changing Laika to Kira so her life would fit in the timeframe of the series. Honestly one of the best examples of writing compromise and cooperation I’ve ever seen!
· Not going to lie, seeing him come to class every week with his notebook covered in cute stickers he drew himself was super-nice to see!
· In his lecture about color schemes, he accidentally gave away the twist about Kira’s heel-turn, but the writing on the show is so good anyways that I didn’t mind at all while bingeing!
· On a lighter note, the Dachshund magician character is called The Magnificent Chipolata, and was originally created by one of Jeremy’s storyboarders as a joke! He liked it so much that Chipolata became a recurring character!
· Jeremiah also confirmed the fan-theory that Ed conned his way into the position of ambassador for the Pluto, forcing the original holder of that role to be a hot dog cart worker on the M-Bark.
· The puppies episode was one of the first ones written for the show! Jeremy said it was important for season 1 to have episodes with the creative freedom of fillers while still having plot advancements.
· Sailor Moon & DragonBall parody episodes were also considered for those same reasons, but had to be cut for time.
· The show’s production was hit pretty hard by covid. Even though voice actors can hypothetically record from home, some people don’t have a good enough setup to record non-echo-y audio. Kimiko Glenn recorded all her first takes in her kitchen with a low-quality mic and it was all pretty much unusable!
· Jeremiah also talked about some future shows he was thinking about pitching! Out of courtesy, I won’t say exactly what they were, but I will mention some rough trends about what he likes!
· Pretty obvious from Dogs in Space, but he likes the contrast from putting genuinely cute wholesome characters in horrifying dark situations. (I wholeheartedly agree with this! If adult animated protags actually had nicer art styles, I would empathize with them more in dire situations)
· He also wants to make a musical series like Centaurworld or Phineas and Ferb, but is unsure of the logistics behind making one as of now.
· He thinks up character arcs first, then creates worlds and characters that match them, rather than the other way around (Which I think is a really cool and useful writing technique!)
· He’s upset with Netflix’s strategy of cancelling most shows before 3 seasons, citing Parks and Rec as an example of shows that get much better when given more than 2 seasons to grow.
· Finally, he gave us an exclusive sneak peek at the first episode of season 2! I promised not to spoil anything major, so all I will say is that I like the direction they’re taking and hope they’ll update the opening sequence to match it!
Tumblr media
· Season 2 should hopefully drop around next spring!

Here is my oc Perilla who I decided to pair with Raditz. I was inspired by MasakoX's what if series which is pretty cool but I have some big issues with the way he went about redeeming Raditz. To make a long story short, if Raditz managed to survive Piccolo's attack but Goku was killed then why wouldn't Raditz simply kill Piccolo as well? Then the earth would be his to take over before Vegeta and Nappa got there. In Dragonball redemption typically doesn't happen unless Goku is able to beat the crap out of his opponent, they live through it, and later on they realize that their motivations align. Ironically Raditz was too strong for that to work, which is likely why he stayed dead. The story simply advanced to a point where he wasn't needed anymore. So in my idea for a Raditz redemption he dies and finds a way to escape hell. Of course canonically there is no way to escape hell but what I'm writing is very fanfiction-esque and ultimately Raditz becomes a Galactic Patrol Elite. Perilla (aka Peril) is my OC. She is in the same boat albiet for different reasons. She was a fighter/medic for the resistance against Freiza, her last station set on a planet resisting Freiza's control, only for her and her comrades to find out that it was a trap as the people they were sent in to help, contacted Freiza's army to slaughter them. Enraged by the betrayal, Peril killed noncombatants indiscriminately as she and a few others sacrificed themselves to hold off Freiza's army so the rest of her military unit could escape. Ultimately she runs up against and is killed by Raditz. Time in hell doesn't necessarily run congruent with time in the living world but eventually Raditz is also shunted to hell after getting killed by Goku and Piccolo's team attack. The two see each other again and its not a happy meet up. The anger subsides since neither of them can die again and through a set of circumstances and events they begin to tolerate each other's company. It culminates in them meeting a demon named Zabaone who has the power to give them back their bodies and return them to the land of the living if they strike a deal with him. The deal is struck and the real adventure begins. I'm using Dragon Ball Z's canon before Toriyama rewrote a lot of stuff in Super.

Dragon Ball GT Retrospective (7/7)
[Note: I wrote this on January 16, 2013.  Originally, I had embedded a video of Goku Junior slapping his bare ass for like ten hours, but it’s down now :(   Such is life.)
Well, I know I said I finished watching Dragon Ball GT, but there's one last thing in the box set: Dragon Ball GT: The Movie
This actually isn't what it sounds like.  I'm pretty sure the "movie" was actually a TV special, and it didn't really have much at all to do with the characters or plotlines of GT.   Really, it's more of an epilogue tale of the future, set one hundred years after the events in Dragon Ball GT.   Of course, GT was set some forty years after the beginning of the first Dragon Ball storyline, so it seems like a jump too far.   From what I understand, the original plan was to wrap up the GT series with the end of the Baby Saga, but something happened and they ended up making another twenty-odd episodes.  In between all that, they had this GT special set up, probably as a final sendoff to all things Dragon Ball.   This was somewhat undermined by flashing a hundred years back for Super 17 and Shadow Dragon Sagas, but in the final episode of GT, they flashed forward yet again to tie the series finale with the special.   So, the premise of the special is pretty straightforward.  One hundred years after Baby's defeat, Goku and everyone else from Dragon Ball is dead.  The only one left is Pan, who's looking pretty spry for a a centenarian.  Actually, I'm not sure 100 years was the best time frame to use.   Goku's master, Master Roshi, was already three hundred years old when Dragon Ball started, and he survived all the way to the end of GT, never really aging much.  The implication was that his lifetime of martial arts training somehow allowed him to unnaturally extend his lifespan, but it was never actually explained.   Further, we never really found out what the lifespan of a Saiyan is.  Goku and Vegeta aged very little across the timeline of DBZ/DBGT, and Vegeta explained that Saiyans have a much longer physical prime than humans do.   Humans like.... Master Roshi?   I don't think anyone really put a lot of thought into this, probably because no one ever seriously planned to cover the world of DragonBall that far into the future.   Even if we knew how long Saiyans and humans can normally live in that universe, the Saiyan-human hybrid characters would still be an x-factor.   I guess what I'm trying to say here is that we really can't tell what keeps Granma Pan so fit.  Is it because she's one-quarter Saiyan?  Is it because of advances in that Earth's medical technology?  Is it because any human in that world could live past 100 with proper diet and exercise?   Or is she tapping into the same ki techniques that preserved Master Roshi for so long?   What I kind of dig about the special is that no one really knows, and we may never know.  The world of Goku and his friends is gone, lost forever like a forgotten dream.  Pan seems to be a minor celebrity in her own right, but it's because she's Pan, not so much because she was related to the mysterious Son Goku, daughter of the brilliant scientist Son Gohan, or the heir of the legendary world champion Mister Satan.  If she married, her husband is never seen or mentioned.   We have no idea if she had brothers or sisters.   She must have had at least one son or daughter, but the only reason we know this is because of her grandson, Goku Jr.  There's a melancholy to that.  Maybe some of these missing figures are still alive, but they're clearly not part of Pan's life anymore.   It's just her and her grandson living in Satan City.   Goku Jr. probaly knows the city was named to honor his ancestor's heroism at the Cell Games, but the information is meaningless to him.   It's ancient history, especially to a small boy.  Goku Jr. is the spitting image of his namesake, but this doesn't mean that much to him either.   He knows Goku was a great warrior, someone whom Pan respects tremendously, but he might as well be Abraham Lincoln.  He looks in the mirror and sees himself, not a cartoon character who could blow up entire planets with his fingers.   Pan tries to train Goku Jr, but he's kind of a klutz.  More to the point, he's timid and doesn't want to fight.   A bully named Puck takes a cool-looking novelty pen from him, and he just lets him keep it.   Pan gives him shit for not standing up for himself, but he doesn't see the big deal.   During this conversation she has a heart attack or something like that, and we cut to the hospital, where Pan is apparently in bad shape.  Goku desperately promises to train harder and fight anyone he has to if it means she'll pull through.   This is where Pan realizes she's been too hard on the boy.   I like this scene because it would have been too easy to forget that Pan was kind of a pushy jerk when she was a kid.   The adult Pan is still demanding and refuses to take crap from anyone, but she's been wanting Goku Jr. to be like her grandfather, and he has been all along. Son Goku wouldn't start a fight over a pen, no matter how many cool floaty things are inside it.  But he would go through anything to save Pan, and that's what Goku Jr. is determined to do, too.   When Pan takes a turn for the worse, Junior heads home, and notices a photo of Pan as a child, holding a Dragon Ball.  He flashes back to a time when Pan tried to tell him the story of the photo, but he was too preoccupied playing video games.   PAN: Hey, check this out.  It's a picture of me and my robot friend Giru.   And I had a dopey orange bandana, and I whined all the time, and Vegeta never got to do anything cool, and-- GOKU JR.: That sounds really boring, granma.  I'm gonna play more Super Mario World.   It's hard not to like Goku, Jr., is what I'm trying to say.   Anyway, Goku Jr. doesn't know the whole mythology of the Dragon Balls, but he does vaguely understand that they grant wishes, and the four-star ball was sort of a family heirloom, so he devises an ill-conceived plan to travel to Mount Paozu and search his ancestor's home for it.  A truck driver offers him a lift, but this is just a trick to get all the stuff in his giant backpack.   Evil Truck Driver is perhaps my new favorite GT character. GOKU JR.: So what's in this truck?   ETD: It's full of hamburgers, kid.  It's pretty awesome.   GOKU, JR.: Wow, you sure have a lot of food in the cab.   ETD: Yep.   I've got even more food in this bag here, too.   You want some?   GOKU JR.: Nah, I've got my own food in my backpack.   ETD: ... Really?    Uh... say, you want to hop out and take a whiz?   It's a long way to go.   GOKU JR.: Yeah, I guess I'd better.   I'll just leave my backpack stuffed with food in your truck filled with even more food.     ETD: Delicious.  Uh... I mean, scrumptious!  I mean!  I'm driving away and taking your food with me!  Ha ha ha! I feel really bad for whoever's expecting those hamburgers to arrive.   Actually, maybe he's not even a real truck driver.  He just stole the truck one day and he's been living off its cargo ever since.   Ironically, this turns into a lucky break for Goku, because he meets Puck while he walks to Mt.  Paozu on foot.  Puck had heard about Goku's plans before he left, and he was so impressed with his daring that he wants to tag along and watch when Goku is eaten by wild animals or bandits.  The thing is, Puck's a pretty fair outdoorsman, so as they get closer to their destination he's able to help Goku live off the land.  Along the way, Puck begins to bond with Goku Jr., and they have a few minor adventures.   Wolves attack them, but they're rescued by a woman with a shotgun who takes them to her home for the night.   Unfortunately, she turns out to be a witch or a demon or something.   Whatever she is, she eats people.  Goku Jr. is suspicious from the start (due to his past experience with Evil Truck Driver), so he and Puck manage to escape.   Their partnership comes to an end on a rickety bridge.   Goku Jr is afraid to cross until Puck proves it's sturdy enough.   Even so, the bridge nearly collapses, and Puck falls off in a failed attempt to rescue Goku.  Goku manages to climb back up on his own, and then he rescues a bearcub from one of the same demon bandits he escaped earlier.  In gratitude, the bear’s mother escorts Goku to his ancestor's home, but they're once again attacked by the bandits.   This time, they're joined by Lord Yao, their leader.   The mommy bear tries to fight him off so Goku can take her cub to safety, but she's hopelessly outmatched.   Worse, the baby bear slips away and tries to help, so Goku can't even save him.  Frustrated with his powerlessness, Goku Jr finally loses his shit and transforms into a Super Saiyan.  He clobbers Lord Yao and frightens his henchmen away.  When he reverts to normal, he has no memory of the battle, and believes the bears did all the work.   With all that out of the way, Goku Jr. locates the Four-Star Dragon Ball in the ruins of what was once his ancestor's childhood home.   This is really a melancholy scene.  The house belonged to Son Gohan, the kindly old man who adopted the elder Goku when his spaceship crashed on Earth.  When Dragon Ball begins, Goku leaves that home to begin his adventures, and aside from a couple of trips to pick up his things, he never really returns.   Now, some 140 years later, it's still standing, but derelict.  No one remembers the kindly old man who lived there, or how his compassion changed the universe for the better.  Someone must have left the four-star Dragon Ball there to honor his memory, but even the significance of that gesture is lost in the sands of time.   Goku Jr. doesn't understand how the Dragon Balls work, so he starts praying to the four-star ball, asking the Dragon to restore his grandmother's health and bring Puck back to life if at all possible.  When he gets no answer, he becomes upset, and then he notices the original Goku standing beside him.   He introduces himself as Goku Jr.'s great-great-grandfather, and explains that the Dragon Balls only work when you have all seven of them.   Nevertheless, he congratulates his descendant for his courage and strength, and then Pan and Puck arrive on the scene in an aircraft.   Apparently they didn't die after all.   The elder Goku disappears without a trace, and Goku Jr. is left with the lesson that his inner strength was what saved the day.     I'm not crazy about the ending of the story, since it's never explained how Puck survived his fall.   Pan's recovery is no big deal.   No one knew for sure whether she would live or die, so it's entirely plausible that she got better, went home, and realized where Goku Jr. must have gone.   But Puck fell off a bridge into a deep canyon.  Unless Pan swooped in and saved him in the nick of time, I don't see how else he would have survived.   Of course, some other superhuman resident of Mount Paozu might have stepped in, but the special seems to be built on the idea that the superheroics of old are no more.   Of course, based on the finale of Dragon Ball GT we might infer that Goku Jr.'s wish really was granted after all.   In the final episode of the series, Goku merges with the Dragon Balls as Shenron exiles himself from the earth.   So if the Four-Star Ball was sitting in his old house, it must have been Goku himself who put it there, because no one else would have had it.  And it's reasonable to assume he had the other six with him, so when Goku Jr. made his wish, he really did get it to work after all.   The implication is that Goku is the Dragon, and he's not too picky about the rules.  I think this is what Toei was going for, but they wanted to keep it ambiguous.  Maybe Goku did come back from death to grant his descendant's wish, or maybe Goku Jr. imagined the encounter, and Puck and Pan's survival was just a fortunate coincidence.   The next time we see these characters is in Episode 64 of the regular GT television series.  Goku Jr. has learned to harness and control his powers to become a talented martial artist.  He enters the World Tournament and faces one of Vegeta's descendants in the final round of the Junior Devision.  Pan is still in good health, and she meets Vegeta Jr.'s mother, indicating a friendly, if not close, relationship still exists between the two families.  The elder Goku reappears once again to watch the tournament finals, but Pan only glimpses him for a moment before he vanishes again. There's a bittersweetness to the special that really makes it worthwhile.   Beyond that, it's actually kind of boilerplate.  It reminds me a lot of the "Episode of Bardock" special that was recently produced.   In that, Goku's biological father Bardock miraculously survives the destruction of his home planet by getting thrown back in time, where he becomes the hero of the pre-Saiyan Planet Plant and turns Super Saiyan at the climactic moment.  It's not a bad story, it just doesn't have a whole lot else going for it other than being a callback/tribute to the main Dragon Ball storyline.   A lot of fun was had with these future scenarios, depicting heroes who would carry on after Goku: Future Trunks in his alternate timeline, Uub at the end of DBZ, Pan as the heir apparent in GT, and Goku Jr. in this special.  But none of these characters ever really goes anywhere new.  At best, they follow a path similar to the one charted by Goku and his contemporaries.  The moral is that the story is the same no matter who the main character is.  Goku Jr. barely knows the legend of his famous ancestor, but he carries on the tradition nevertheless.   That's the "hero's legacy".  Goku might be forgotten after a few generations, but the things he stood for, the causes he fought for, the example he set, those things are timeless.   And that brings us full circle, because I think the chief mistake of Dragon Ball GT was in trying to de-age Goku to artificially loop his character arc.   Toei wanted to make Goku his own successor, when they probably would have been better off making Pan the main character, having her own goofy adventures with Goku and Vegeta chilling out in the superhero retirement home.  Or they could have skipped ahead and made the series about this Goku Jr. kid, since he has the look they wanted without all the baggage.  GT ended with a ham-fisted morality play about how the Dragon Balls had been overused, which is humorous coming from a studio that couldn't let the Dragon Ball franchise end with dignity.  With the special, they kind of got it right, but only for a moment.

Fanfic Writer Recs!
Since it’s fanfic writer appreciation day, I figured I should do one of these :) Beware, these are going to be all over the place. Just some that immediately sprang to mind without conscious order. I probably should rec more, but here’s what I have.
Under the cut are recommendations for the following fandoms:
Dragonball, Harry Potter, One Piece, Riverdale, Supernatural
@dragonbabezee, AO3
She writes Dragonball fanfiction with a focus on Bulma and Vegeta. Her stories are compelling and often feature technology in them. Her characterizations are on point and consistent and her plot is engaging and oh so entertaining.
I think I originally found her works through a recommendation for her work Broken Down Universe (which is amazing and takes Dragonball’s parallel futures to the extreme), but I really fell for her writing reading Never Ever Land a massive canon divergence inspired by Peter Pan she has been updating for six years now. It’s an incredibly entertaining space adventure with consistent characters, great writing and it’s just so fun.
I really enjoyed her newest story Illuminary Inc as well, which is set in a future au and contains advanced technology and cloning - and just a really good and engaging story.
@doctor-cyance, AO3
I found Worth looking for popular One Piece fanfiction on AO3 and through the writing I fell for the KidLaw pairing so hard. So hard. But really, I fell even deeper for On The Surface. How I did that I don’t know but I keep revisiting the story all the time.
The writing is amazing, the characters are spot on and it’s just, I really love it all. If you ever star writing again, let me know ♥
@stillscape, AO3
I think the first Riverdale fanfiction I read was Modern Love. I’ve already had fallen hard for the show at that time, but after reading that piece I was gone and am since. I haven’t read much of her work so far, but I really enjoy her ongoing series Ninia. It’s  modern au with soulmates and she used that trope to enhance how fucked up and twisted the Cooper family is. The story contains huge amounts of bakery goods  and makes me want to curl up under a blanket with a huge cup of tea and just read and dream for a while.
More Fic Recs:
What We Lost (What we will be) by @darknessaroundus
Riverdale. Modern AU. This one starts with character death and ends up in major investigation, just like the show itself, it’s just another death. Honestly, I was hesistant to start this one due to it, but the story isn’t overly sad. Instead, the characters step up and deal with the situation, somewhat similiar to the show canon, the characters hurt but the reader doesn’t suffer all their pain.
The writing is amazing, the characters are great and the mystery is engaging.
Naga Verse by @diminuel
Supernatural. AU. Fic and art, both amazing and both by the same creator. Very fantasyesque, so much word building, charming characters, great writing and amazing art. It’s fun and engaging yet slow and careful. I really enjoy it.
Evitative by @k-vichan
Harry Potter. AU for the fifth year. Starts with Harry discovering the Dark Arts, a re-sorting and Slytherin!Harry. There’re many well written Slytherin students and really good build in house/ magical world backstory (for lack of wording skill on my part) that doesn’t read as if it’s only there to contradict Dumbledore/ the light side but actually adds to the canon and balances the world as we know it. The characterization is amazing and it’s really engaging and fun to read.
Los Enamorados by @lanadeljones
Riverdale. Modern AU with magic. So far really interesting set up and great mystery with lovely characters. Really enjoyed this one.
Echo To Echo by singsongsung
Riverdale. Zombie-Apocalypse. I read this just a few days ago, but I’m still thinking about it. I really liked the writing, the characterization and the world. And I guess I’m lowkey shipping Bughead with Archie now.
Kitchenette Crush by SunlitGarden
Riverdale. Modern AU. College. Demisexual Jughead meets Betty and has a minor sexuality crisis. I really enjoyed this one, it’s slow and sweet with lots of eating in the first chapters.
Amber Curse by @tsvaling (Kagehime3)
One Piece. Viking AU. KidNami. Amazing and well thought-out setting, great characterization, really well written and a huge adventure. The story is super engaging and it’s so easy to fall for all of the oc villagers. Really, I miss reading this and should do a reread soon. ♥
