"Weyr of the White" Loosely inspired by one of my favorite book series' growing up, the Dragonriders of Pern by Anne (And now Todd) McCaffrey. If you're not familiar, I can't possibly recommend it enough for a unique dash of 90s/00s sci-fi/fantasy.

Did you ever read the Dragon Riders of Pern books?
I did, yes! When I was eleven or twelve, in the early 90s, I came into possession of a stash of vintage 70s Anne McCaffrey books -- the first three Dragonriders books (Flight, Quest, and White Dragon) plus the Harper books (Song, Singer, Drums) and Get Off The Unicorn, and I think Ship Who Sang and possibly Crystal Singer, most of them in the original pulp paperback. At the time she was still publishing fairly frequently so once I tore through those I started reading the rest, to the point where, when The Girl Who Heard Dragons came out when I was in my middle teens, I was caught up and super eager for the new anthology (which I adored). We didn't have a lot of money then and almost none for books I could as easily get out of the library, so getting the hardbound version with all the gorgeous Michael Whelan illustrations as a gift was a real treat.
Anne McCaffrey was essentially my introduction to adult SFF, along with Terry Pratchett beginning about a year later. She was certainly my introduction to written erotica. And her writing was a huge influence on mine structurally -- she has a pretty specific way of structuring sentences and paragraphs and when I re-read her books I can see where a lot of my prose style came from even today.
I was aware at the time that there were, shall we say, some issues with her writing, particularly surrounding consent (she acknowledges as much in Get Off The Unicorn, not that she ends up doing anything about it, ever) and I'm aware of her extremely weird and problematic statements about homosexuality. Not to mention she was one of the authors who not only didn't like fanfic but flip-flopped a bit about whether she would "allow" it to be circulated. It's a mixed legacy in general, and certainly for me. But the dragonriders books and especially Dragonsong and Dragonsinger hold a specific and special place in my heart, as does The Ship Who Searched.

‘Sunfyre and the pedophile have the strongest dragon-rider bond in Targaryen history’ when Daenerys, the MOTHER OF DRAGONS, literally BIRTHED IN THE FLAMES AND BREASTFEEDS her three dragons, HOTD truly created the most insane and delusional people I’ve ever seen.
The misogyny never really banked or went away, though.

okay im gonna infodump about my esteemed fantasy school kids who sneak out to ride dragons at night to save the world wip
its only been started recently so yeah
their pronouns are subject to change
firstly theres elias (he/him) who i think is a cis guy gay and demi. letty and wren call him eli to tease him. hes the son of the king, only child, and is obnoxious at the start cause he believes hes better then everyone else but his friends teach him otherwise. he has crow wings and can fly as well as loves trinkets and fights with a katar. he has a decent few scars from practice fighting when he was a child cause hes most likely going to fight off in the war (well thats what is parents plan for him)
then there's letitia (she/fey) who everyone calls letty. aroace cis girl icon. she comes from a massive fuckin family (five or six siblings undecided) and has a scholarship to the school cause shes goddamn smart (her family couldnt pay for it). she loves fiddling with things and is a mechanic of sorts. shes a cyborg, all her family has cyborg implants, and has a cyborg brain and left arm and when she fights she runes lines of code to do what she wants to do
and finally theres wren (they/wind/forest). theyre the groundkeepers (who also looks after the schools dragons and is skeptical of their antics) child so they get free admission to the school. nonbinary pan fucker. is one with the forest. wind's a forest elf and has pointy ears and is good at archery. they love listening to hozier and they are really good with plants and herbology. their favourite colour is green and they play the harmonica
im prolly gonna design their dragons too

Whilst Princess Rhaenyra misliked her stepmother, Queen Alicent, she became fond and more than fond of her good-sister Lady Laena. With Driftmark and Dragonstone so close, Daemon and Laena oft visited with the princess, and her with them. Many a time they flew together on their dragons, and the princess’s she-dragon Syrax produced several clutches of eggs. —Fire & Blood
Ok, so in this passage, GRRM is not-so-subtly implying a “more than fond” relationship between Rhaenyra and Laena, more than likely with Daemon as a third, ahem ahem. But what particularly strikes me about this quote, is that Syrax is producing eggs. Only Rhaenyra's dragon Syrax, and not Laena's dragon Vhagar, despite the fact that Vhagar was also said to be a female dragon.
So, perhaps both Caraxes and Vhagar sired eggs on Syrax? That is, this could be a low-key clue to the fact of dragon sex changes (that Septon Barth and Maester Aemon say is a thing, so of course it's true despite doubting maesters). And perhaps this is more evidence that said dragon sex changes will be a plot point later in ASOIAF, maybe regarding the future of dragons after Dany's three?
Also, the fact that F&B points out that Jaehaerys's dragon Vermithor and Alysanne's dragon Silverwing were bonded, and “oft coiled about one another”, implies that dragons have sex because their riders do. And perhaps vice versa — although that's more of an Anne McCaffrey thing so maybe not. 😅 (See her thing about how riders of Pern green dragons are all gay, and that if a man were heterosexual and somehow became a green dragon rider, he would thus become gay during a mating flight.) But either way, that particular connection between dragons and their riders could also become a plot point later in ASOIAF....

The almost forgotten Cannibal origin theory
The almost rider of Cannibal was Viserys son of Aenys Targaryen 1. Why him? There have been hints throughout the series that dragons and their riders have a bond. If this is true, could Cannibal’s sinister behavior have stemmed from Viserys being tortured by Maegor? Imagine through their dragon bond, Cannibal feeling Viserys’ suffering for days. He went mad. Since this was done under the orders of another dragonrider, did Cannibal develop a hatred of other dragons? He might view them as all out to get him.
This theory is open for any who wishes to use it in headcanons and fanfic. Enjoy the craziness.

First Flight of Spring
Tumblr media
We reach the top of the ridge overlooking the valley where our village rests. In the distance, we can see our home. Asteroids pass above us, dappling the sunlight with shade, and this high, the air thins and the stars still peek through the pink clouds. The wind teases through our hair and under our folded wings. We stretch them wide, enjoying the ache of easing our stiff spine. Our fingers twine amongst the long grasses on our mane, gripping onto the sturdy anchor. Small white flowers bud on our branches. We whisper with a voice like a rustle of a breeze through new leaves.
"Just one flight?"

Anyways, here's a writing prompt. I don't give a shit.
A young woman (or you know, trans person who hasn't realized they're trans yet, or, fuck, a trans person who does know they're trans. That's not going to stop this shit from happening. ''you can't do that I'm not a woman'' isn't gonna fucking do anything) is kidnapped away from her family and all she knows by dragonriders, who tell her that she has been Chosen™ to be the new Woman of the Dragons™ by soul-bonding with the newest Dragon Queen™ that is going to hatch.
Yes, the dragonriders did beat her father black and blue for trying to hide her. Yes, they did kill all of her family's livestock and not /even/ feed them to their dragons to punish her family for trying to protect her.
Yes, they expect her to have no problem with any of this and tell her that once she soul bonds with the queen, she'll learn to appreciate the Privilege™ and Luxury™ she is going to receive for this Highest of Honors™.
Yes, she will be forced to be a fucking broodmare for these men, just like her dragon queen will be. Their only jobs are to make babies for the Dragonmen™ and well no actually that's not true, she will also have to act as servant to whichever Honorable and Handsome™ man's dragon is the first to mate with the dragon queen, because fucking the queen is how leadership is decided among these men.
She tries to escape multiple times and is dragged back kicking and screaming and eventually tied up. Eventually she's dumped into the dragon's nest and in front of the egg that will hatch the next dragon queen.
Eventually the egg hatches, and the new baby dragon queen is born, and soul bonds with our poor protagonist.
Then she's untied, and the Dragonmen™ assume that because she's now soulbonded to the queen, that means everything they've done is magically forgiven and forgotten and she won't try to run away.
Well, they're right that she doesn't try to run away.
What she does do is take the first knife she can find, and uses it to stab her kidnapper to death. He can't risk fighting back without injuring the infant queen, who is held protectively in our protagonist's other arm, plus she had the element of surprise and the follow through to keep stabbing when the first one doesn't kill him instantly. His dragon, now with the soulbond shattered, flees rather than attempt any kind of vengeance on his daughter's bonded rider.
You cannot take on a whole army of Dragonmen™ by yourself with just a kitchen knife (which she upgrades to a proper combat knife by looting the body of her first victim), but thankfully she doesn't have to, because everyone else who's been oppressed by the Dragonmen™ was literally already starting their rebellion in a much more stealthy manner, and she's got perfect fucking timing to join in.
All of the Dragonmen™ except for those who were actively fighting back (most of whom were locked in the dungeon being starved to death) are killed. If their dragons fight back, they're also killed. Most of the dragons, though, are better people than their riders were, and are more than happy to see the revolt succeed.
Why?
Because fuck Anne McCaffrey, that's why.

These two are twins, they're Ahltinor dragon riders who serve the king of the Ahltinor Sovereignty in Middonmira. They have longer individual names but are known commonly by their nickname Vik. When they're not out on missions or field work, they're advisors for their King.
I've had these two as oc's for a super long time... close to 11 years now (most of the main characters from ToM are that old too lol) and they've gone through some changes, but have stayed mostly the same. I originally gave them bright red/orange hair, but over time I've liked the white blonde a lot more.

How would you sort your fandom blorbos and/or OC’s as Pern Dragon colors?
Ahhh IDK, that was always the part I liked least about the worldbuilding, the hierarchy of the Weyrs. I'm not against it morally or anything, I don't think there's something inherently wrong about wanting to imagine your fave as a dragonrider and decide what kind they would Impress, I just find it uncomfortable.
Presumably the dragons somehow know which riders will make good leaders, which is why browns and bronzes Impress riders who move into leadership roles -- people find their level with the dragon's help. It's just that attached to that is the stigma of having a "lower rank" dragon and knowing what that says about you, not to mention there's no real room for advancement beyond a point based on your dragon's scale color.
And there don't seem to be any perks -- greens and blues don't have special powers, they're smaller, and I always got the sense that they weren't that bright compared to browns and bronzes. It would have made more sense to me if the smaller dragons were also smarter; if you're a natural leader, seems logical that you're strong-minded enough to manage a big dragon significantly dumber than the smaller ones, while a rider of a smaller dragon has to be smarter to keep up. Which also opens a door for more equitable advancement in leadership, depending on whether a weyr prefers a strong hand or a smart brain. Both have their advantages.
And then of course there's the weird gender stuff of a) the golds always being Impressed by a woman and b) alllllll other riders being male, although I know this started to shift in the later books. (I don't recall the quote clearly but I know McCaffrey also said some stuff about green riders being gay that implied heterosexuality is compulsory for a leadership role in a wing or a weyr, but that's not canonical to the books afaik.)
I was always much more interested in the Impression stories, the searches and hatchings, the training and such. Even the politics of the mating flights is interesting in terms of leadership changeover; it's kind of like choosing a military strategist based on which jockey wins a horse race, but there's space there for interesting exploration. But the Impression scenes were always my favorite.
(All of which is to say that if I was going to drop the Shivadhverse into Pern, Gregory would be a Lord Holder on the southern continent and really annoy Benden Weyr by courting and marrying E'de, Benden-born rider of the blue Taseth. Although what can you expect from the family that produced G'rald, the most shiftless bronze rider on Pern? He's always fucking off back to the southern continent anyway. Might as well give Shivadh Hold their own Weyr at that point, it'd get E'de out of everyone's hair and if G'rald becomes weyrleader at least he can't do too much harm down there.)

TG talks about the supposed legendary bond between Aegon II and Sunfyre, but Stormcloud’s bond to Aegon III was an a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL.
Stormcloud was never ridden before, he was a baby, but he brought Aegon III safely home, even though there was a scorpion bolt through his neck and countless arrows in his belly. Stormcloud didn’t drop Aegon III at sea, he made sure his rider survived. He gave his own life to save Aegon. Now that’s a real strong bond between a dragon and his rider.
I honestly couldn't tell you why people insist on this bond, even with Sunfyre flying miles to get to Dragonstone while broken apart, gets credited as "strong" in the face of dragons like Stormcloud. I really don't, other than because Aegon III was Rhaenyra's son, people don't credit his much smaller and less mature dragon for saving a literal child's life. Because Rhaenyra was "incompetent" and "a fat whore"....even though Aegon never made a single correct decision the entire time he was king, definitely raped at least one girl and likely raped several more servant girls and women, was known to have been fat himself. But the sort of fat that comes from wealth (more access to food), drinking, and laziness.

Last Blood of Ruatha, Lessa of Pern.
When I was reading Dragonflight, I drew some scenes for art practice. I later learned the series, though well-intentioned in its feminism and gay rep, misses the mark as it goes on, at least in several areas. I debated posting any of my fanart but in the end, am sharing some of it with a nod for what it does right for 1968.
why yes, my interpretation of Lessa is a pink-haired anime girl.
