THE CHALLENGE LIVES!
After the sucker punch of 2017, we are back, angrier than ever and with a brand new reading challenge.
For those of you who don’t know us yet, yes, we are a reading challenge! But not any reading challenge, we cater to the queer feminists of the world, we want you to learn and rule. So, pick a book, tag your choice with "dragoonthechallenge" and join us every month!
HERE ARE THIS YEAR’S THEMES:
January | GET POSITIVE It's time to challenge an idea, concept or long held belief. Be that your body image, mental illness or even death. Get on your feet and make it happen. February | CBs By Women Need we say more? February is a quick month for fast, but still complex, reads. Let’s give the women changing the landscape of the comic industry some love. March | Defiant Women For much of history anonymous was a woman. No more, let’s learn about some badass fucking women who changed the fucking world. April | POC as The Lead Choose any genre, any setting, but we better not see a white person as the lead, for fuck’s sake. May | By a Woman As long as you choose a book written by woman, it’s fair game. June | Here & Queer It’s LGBTQ+ History Month, we are queer and still here. Let’s learn about queer history or read some queer stories. Your choice. July | By a Woman of Color As long as you choose a book written by a woman of color, it’s fair game. August | YA Girls Everyone enjoys some young adult books every now and then, right? Choose one about a girl! September | The Future is Accessible Let’s give the people with disabilities within our communities the spotlight, read something written by them or about them. Learn about different ways of living and enrich your own life. October | Queer & Spooky That’s right, let’s read about some spooky gay shit. Queer paranormal romance is all the rage. November | She’s No Man It’s a men’s world, let’s read about some women fucking shit up where they don’t expect a woman to be. Any genre is cool with us. December | They’re lesbians, Harold QUEER WOMEN QUEER WOMEN QUEER WOMEN
Just like in previous years, we will have a masterpost with book recs and lists to guide you through the month’s theme. You can check for it on the 10th of every month on the dot. But if you already have your own idea, that’s absolutely fine and even encouraged.
The challenge is open for anyone who feels like joining at any point of the year. We don’t have any rules or demands, but if you feel like sharing what you’re going to be reading, tag us! That’s what we live for, my dudes. Here’s to a year of reading! :D

okay so i haven’t finished this book yet? but for this month’s @dragoonthechallenge theme of GET POSITIVE, i started reading nisi shawl’s everfair. it’s a steampunk reimagining of how belgium’s attempt to colonize the congo might’ve played out if the indigenous population had known about steam power already, which. AH!!!!!!
tbqh i’m a bit out of my depth with this book – it’s MASSIVE in scope (it spans multiple characters and continents, and it takes place from, like, 1880 to at least 1940) – but i believe it’s challenging me in really productive ways. also, again – this pREMISE.
tl;dr would def recommend to folks who love sci-fi and steampunk!!

Soooo.... I know I already posted a thing, and this is rly rly last minute so I apologize. But I got around to reading this and it fits the theme of the month so I wanted to share!
This is about the 2008 five-issue run of Hellcat (Patsy Walker), written by Kathryn Immonen. It was recommended to me some time ago as an easy to read standalone comic - and while having a feel for marvel 616/knowing the characters certainly doesn't hurt, I think it can be easily enjoyed on its own!
The plot, in a few words: Patsy is sent to Alaska to investigate a disturbance in the force possible mystical unrest; there, she gets roped in by a clan of witches to help find and rescue their daughter, who has been missing for some time.
I'd never read anything with Patsy Walker before, and ohh boy... I'm in love.
She is a literal beam of sunshine
Tumblr media
The inside of her head looks like a Mucha painting:
Tumblr media
She makes THE BEST FACES
Tumblr media
This comic was just the right side of wacky and fun! as superhero comics should be! And wonderfully illustrated too. It was an absolute delight to read and I recommend it wholeheartedly.
[ Bonus: Patsy's expression when facing two gigantic reindeer polar bears (yes, you read that right)
Tumblr media
Conclusion: I love her ]

WELCOME TO MONTH THREE!
With International Women’s Day just around the corner, this month couldn’t be anything other than a celebration of women’s accomplishments.
We’ll honor them all, from the trailblazers who changed the landscape of the world, to the women whose mere existence are the biggest acts of resistance imaginable.
Let’s honor, in special, the ones who are so often dismissed and forgotten, our trans sisters and women of color. We’ll never know what defiance truly means, while we remain ignorant of their voices and experiences.
For most of history anonymous was a woman, no more. This month, we learn.

books i read this month (rapidfire edition)
for the @dragoonthechallenge monthly theme of HELLA QUEER LIT(!!!!)
....obvs :*
westerfeld’s afterworlds // ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ // really interesting structural concept that sometimes felt – dare i say it – gimmicky, at times? i will say, though, i really loved the way the darcy/imogen relationship was written. just. super rich and fulfilling and real. :’)
yoshino’s speak now // ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ // dense for a nonfiction book but actually pretty accessible for a constitutional law book, so... split the difference? i really feel like i learned a lot from this one. (tbh it’s also good to know that my high school mock trial experience was good for something)

Wow this got long, but there is more! HERE is the masterpost for last year’s hella queer theme.
As usual, read carefully before choosing a book, we can’t vouch for all the rec lists posted here, which will requiere constant vigilance on your part. You can always switch books or do whatever the hell you want with your book of choice, set it on fire, hug it forever, etc etc. You’re the boss of you.
(I apologize if anything turns out to be very questionable, I’m a tiny idiot trying her best, so do call me out if things are fucked up and I’ll fix it right away! - I also apologize for the ridiculously small intersex list, but google gave me very little to work with. :/)
Our goodreads group already has a topic open and you can check that HERE
If you have any question or need help downloading a book, just ask.
And, finally, let us know which book you’ll be reading! Take a selfie, make a cool post, instagram it, tweet about it, I don’t know, but you do! So let us know what you decided so we can reblog it.
My eternal thanks to @purple-summering, who was responsible for half of the recs! TORI, YOU’RE THE BEST EVER EVER EVER.
And that’s it,
HAVE FUN!!!

DRAGOON THE CHALLENGE → Asking for It (2016) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ “I have to stand up and be counted. I have to set a good example. I have to be brave for other victims. #IBelieveBalinatoomGirl I don’t want to be their champion. I don’t want to be brave. I don’t want to be a hero.”
this is such a hard book to review – somewhere between 4 and 5 stars tbh, but i can't even imagine how i'd justify taking a star away?
in terms of plot, i guess i can see how a reader could feel like 'nothing' 'happens' but like
also so much happens
i just
i know sometimes it feels like there are a lot of ya books about sexual assault out there (i'd argue that there can never be too much responsible representation?) but this one... this text is so rich. every character is fleshed out (except the perpetrators, which. Thank God.) – i really appreciated emma's changed relationship with her family in the second half of the book. i wish i had more intelligent things to say about it, but i dunno. my heart just feels heavy right now.
[if you’re interested in reading it but are concerned about the content for whatever reason, i’ve listed some content warnings at the end of my goodreads review.]
