Edit: 1/11/24
It was brought to my attention that some of the language in this tutorial read as fatphobic. This tutorial was originally written and published on DeviantArt in 2011 and I was generally unaware of these issues at the time. I have adjusted the language in the tutorial to hopefully address these concerns, though old versions may continue to circulate.
Thanks for taking the time to point these things out to me. I will continue to learn and grow. ♥
Here's a few more refs with foreshortening from a larger variety of models:
Hey! It's been a whileeeee.....and i came up with headshot tutorial since I've been working on my 3D project. I didn't get much time to make 2D fan arts like before. Well, i guess the time I'm investing into building my 3D portfolio and it gave me huge improvement in my art skills.
Hey Gess, I was wondering if you had any tips for drawing hands?
If you don’t understand some of my handwriting pls tell me so I can translate!!
Important Notes:
- USE A REFERENCE!!! All of these hands were drawn by using my left hand, so go to google or Pinterest or wherever and find a reference for the hand position you’d like to do! (Or do it yourself)
- I know these hands looks rather chub, but this technique works well with more boney hands too! :D
- An addition to the first one; USING A REFERENCE ISNT CHEATING!!! References help us learn what we’re doing wrong and we can study how something works!
- Hands are very hard, and it took a while for me to even get used to my own technique, so don’t beat yourself up if it doesn’t come out the way you want it. That’s what practice is for! So no worries hon you got this!✨
since I figured out a technique for this I think will help people who hate drawing side rods/valve gear, I thought it was time to make another tutorial since my first one a year ago!
The first thing you need IS A REFERENCE. Unless you want your brain to explode, GET ONE
after you have your reference, sketch out the valve gear with solid shapes . trying to draw the gear details right away is too hard and this helps map out the shapes you need to draw. This doesn’t have to be exact, but try to make it as clear as possible
after blocking out the gear, turn the opacity down and look at your reference to draw the connecting parts where the rods will be in between
connect the parts with rods. If something doesn’t line up, don’t be afraid to move it around
after that, color in the rods and shade. You can use the colored in shape of the valves as a clipping mask and remove the extra linework on the layers below
I hope this is helpful and makes the valve gear not as painful as it usually is!
Alot of people (myself very much included) have struggled with figuring out how to draw this strange man without a neck while making him look decent, so with my 2 years of wisdom and experience I have finally created the ultimate drawing tutorial for drawing him so thou shalt never endure the same fate as I did!
Anyway if you have questions, as always, feel free to ask! All I hope is that this will help create the best version of Hodgkins you can draw, even though this is a tutorial on how I draw the boat guy.
