Drawtober Prompt 5/6 - Ancient Rituals 🏮



Drew this piece partly as a love letter to Yoshitaka Amano and the influence he has on my own work and also to my recent obsession with lamps and glassware.
“The lamp boutique was always a peculiar and gaudy one. Nothing inside however, seemed nearly as curious as the owners themselves. You see, this has been a family owned trade passed down over many generations of glass blowers who also performed trivial fortune telling and tarot readings on the side. It is a local rumor that this family has engaged with darker arts than humans should ever engage with but the quality of their glasswares were unmatched and so they continued to draw attention.Years have passed like this and only recently the next son in the family line has taken over. But the lamps have not sold as well and no one has seen the rest of the family since he took control. This has only fueled the whispers and further enticed the local inquiring minds.If you stand brave enough to enter the shop, you may learn of the dark secret.Upon entering, he will greet you with a stare as cold as a blizzard but twice as harsh. You notice he is slowly marking strange outlines and patterns upon his table with scarlet chalk just barely able to be seen. The lamps around you are all very bright but without any bulbs or cords attached. As you look within one, A screaming and luminous face can be made out yet you hear no sound. But before you can contemplate the sight, you’re being pulled towards his table beyond your control. The owner quietly enchanting something inaudible under his breath, in a language that sounds like snakes and as black as coal.You begin to sink within the velvet fabric, being pulled from a force you can’t quite explain. Just before you completely go under, He draws a light from you that pools into an orb. And once you are gone, he carefully places the light within a newly finished lamp and adds it to his ever growing collection. Only for sale for the right buyer and for an even higher price.”

I was pretty stuck on this prompt for a while. I researched a ton of rituals which was fun in itself but I was hesitant to draw most of them... That was until I came across documentaries on Tibetan sky burials. I think it's a beautiful and interesting funeral practice where it showcases the circle of life. TBH I'd rather have my corpse be devoured by vultures than worms any day!

So here’s my entry for drawtober “Ancient Ritual”. Kinda dark, as I chose to do a take on “Ättestupa”, and why I decided to go in that direction is cause this year, it really feels like a lot of elderly and weak have been sacrificed in order for others to have some fun.

Painted with watercolours and real brush pens by arteza.

And the ritual “Ättestupa” is an old and dead rite which was practiced in northern Scandinavia before the countries were converted to Christianity. The older ppl that had become a physical “burden” on the rest of the family tossed themselves over certain cliffs in groups. A form of ritualistic suicide.

Tried something new and it totally didn't work out the way I wanted it to lol I'm gonna post it anyway. 😅 Prompt 5/6 for Drawtober: Ancient Rituals. I went with a Norse blót. Blót is the term for "blood sacrifice" in Norse paganism. A blót could be dedicated to any of the Norse gods, the spirits of the land, and to ancestors. I’m still pretty busy this week but I figured I need to take it easy on my works since I have been trying to crammed everything together for a while. I skipped some homeworks (actually the professor gave us some freebies bc she understands this year has been chaotic), spent more time relaxing by watching some series, and take it easy on this prompt. I actually wanted to spend more time on this one but for some reason I couldn’t draw what I want to draw for this prompt, which is to honor the ancestors. So I decided to go with this with an idea surrounding bonfire and story. I might go back to this piece in the future because I feel like there’s still some more I could do to it.
