So there’s another one of those cool Hermitcraft trivia posts circulating again which I kinda wanna reblog but also I’m feeling a little bit hesitant because some of the points seem maybe a little bit inaccurate or exaggerated? Like I’d like to fact check them first at least.

(Particularly what stuck out to me was the point about season two only happening because Joe did a coup, because that’s not how I understood that story the way Joe and Xisuma have told it? Or at least as far as I can remember... the impression I had was that Xisuma was mainly the person who took the initiative to keep the server going but Joe was one who broke the gridlock on whether or not they should add new members by just straight up inviting Cleo without asking the others.)

(So maybe a more accurate way to phrase it is that without Xisuma season 2 wouldn’t have happened, but without Joe, season 2 might not have had any new members. And at this point the only still currently active Hermits who were already on the server were X, Hypno and Joe, so the lineup could have turned out very differently, if the server had even survived past season 2.)

(I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure this is how I remember hearing it?)

But what actually annoyed me was this comment from someone (not OP, to be clear) in the notes:

(Don’t go looking for this please, and don’t harass this person, I’m just highlighting this because it’s an example of an attitude you see a lot. It’s not just this specific person who I don’t know at all and whose url I already forgot.)

So

1:

I don’t wanna start counting diversity points on each server like it’s a fucking game, but I DO wanna point out that the “white guy“ comment is pretty rich coming from a Hermitcraft fan.

Both servers have a white guy problem.

But at least with Dream SMP I can actually think of more than one creator who isn’t white, and it didn’t take them until season 2 to add a second female member...

(I know Hermitcraft is more of a private and closed group and they have extremely strict qualifications they demand from new members, plus every current member has veto power, so it’s much harder to add new Hermits than it is to add new DSMP members where it’s all decided by One Guy, but I think some frustration about this is still justified due to how big Hermitcraft is in the MCYT community.)

It’s also extremely annoying when apparently there was a whole thing where Hermit fans were insisting that Quackity is white during the sexyman polls?? Presumably just to excuse their shitty behaviour??? idek. (And I also heard on the other hand that there were some straight up racist comments made about Quackity as well. He literally cannot win, apparently.)

2:

What is this weird attitude towards new creators?? Yes, it’s cool that Hermitcraft has been around for over a decade and that the Hermits have all these cool histories in the community and even influenced the development of the game itself, but you can celebrate that without needing to put down new people, ffs.

I know it’s annoying when the new guys suddenly get more popular than your guys, but it happens, it’s the circle of YouTube. Please chill out. No need to be a hipster about it.

Besides, even if we don’t count people like Vikkstar who admittedly didn’t play on DSMP all that much, there were still people on the server who had long histories in the MCYT community:

Phil has been making Minecraft videos at least since 2012, when he started his first Hardcore Series, and holds the record for the longest running hardcore world to date. There’s a splash text in Minecraft referencing him (”Ph1lzA had a good run!”)

Techno started his channel in 2013 and was part of the Hypixel player council (or was it called the Elite Team back then? Not sure) since he was like 14 or 15, helping with testing and game design on many of the iconic Hypixel games before the server became the biggest Minecraft server in the world. He too has a splash text in the game (”Technoblade never dies!”)

BadBoyHalo has his own PVP server called MunchyMC which was launched in 2015 and before that he was part of the staff on a different PVP server.

Also while more recent, a whole bunch of DSMP members were also on SMP Live and SMP Earth back in 2019. In fact 2019 was when a lot of the DSMP members originally got their initial boost into popularity.

Honestly the only DSMP members who fit the description of “new white guy who popped up in 2021“ are like... probably Foolish and BoomerNA??

I think you probably meant 2020 anyway, because that’s when Dream, George, Sapnap, Tommy, Tubbo and Ranboo became popular. I assume so anyway because those are usually the white guys people actually seem to be talking about when they talk about DSMP white guys. (Obligatory note that Ranboo is in fact nonbinary though.)

tl;dr:

You can just hype up the Hermits and just not say anything about DSMP. That’s an option. Especially if you clearly don’t know that much about DSMP.

Season 6 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips: Volume FF

I've been really excited to get to this post, because I only just recently discovered this rip whilst listening through Volume FF for the first time (amazing album by the way, possibly one of my few favorites?). Listening to the albums is such an interesting experience because there's no comment section or ongoing event to really help categorize what the joke of a rip is - the rip entirely sells itself, and it becomes a lot easier for me to pay attention even when I'd otherwise not get the joke. Regardless, I feel like Blue Mareep would've grabbed me pretty quickly even if the YouTube upload had been my first exposure to it - despite its source material, I'm absolutely in love with the rip.

But wait, what do I mean "despite its source material"? A few of you may remember a post from a while back - Five Dreams at Night 1.16 - where I discussed the somewhat-notorious YouTube figure Dream. Dream and his gaggle of friends together formed the "Dream SMP", a loose storyline that ran through a multiplayer Minecraft-server, effectively a tabletop RPG story within Minecraft. A lot of older, grumpier and more cynical internet users like myself and many SiIvaGunner viewers (the kinds of people who still watch YouTube Poops, basically) kind of wrote the whole thing off as rather cringey, content made for a different audience than us, and mostly got exposed to Dream through his various controversies. He's a figure that's fun to make fun of, and I went into that in the above post wherin I covered him before. Though Mask's presence on the channel in Season 5, it seemed to me that SiIva's stance on Dream in general was pretty much unanimously to make fun of him.

Yet, part of what I love so much about SiIva is that its a channel housing so many different people with so many different points of view. Sure, maybe I personally don't have any investment or affection for the Dream SMP and its ongoing narrative, and it looks a little silly from my POV - but then again, so does SiIvaGunner, and the narratives running on here have genuinely brought me to tears more than once. Blue Mareep is a pretty simple rip in concept - it's a Lacunosa Town-style arrangement of Blue, a song written in tribute and in reference to the Dream SMP. It's a soothing, chill little vibe discussing the friendship between Wilbur and his pet blue sheep, "Friend", and is genuinely a very pleasant listen even completely disconnected from the Dream SMP.

What makee Blue Mareep such a good rip isn't solely due to the chill source track - its the sound of Lacunosa Town itself! The track's DS-ified acoustic guitar sound paired with the gentle piano melody is some of the most soothing, nostalgic audio to me, and it gives Blue an entirely new kind of sound - still soothing and pleasant, but now completely void of the digital Lofi sound that originally defined it. The added sounds of Mareeps, Flaaffys and Ampharos' replaving the sheep Baa's really seal the whole package - it disconnects you so far from the original song, it feels as if...you're daydreaming away, at a Pokèmon ranch, no worries in sight...

Blue Mareep sends me, so, so far away, I really can't stop listening to it. Heboyi through many of his rips has used so many strange sources that I've never even considered as having value in arranging, and produced so many bangers in the process - and I hope he keeps introducing me to more pleasing tunes like this.

Healing AU, tummy kisses:

Tummy kisses are special because they actually were never something that Tommy did: they’re something that Quackity came up with on his own. Maybe he remembers Karl adoring them on days when he was sick and tired and unable to play rough. …Maybe he misses how Sapnap would use them as a way to cheer him up. Maybe he sees how much Dream likes soft belly tickles and decides that he’d probably enjoy some kisses there, too.

At first Dream panics, thinking that Quackity’s about to blow a raspberry. He babbles a bit and then just lies there whimpering and waiting, but…it never comes. Just soft kisses all along his quivering tummy. After around thirty seconds of this he relaxes enough to start giggling a bit, kind of confused. Quackity can’t really tease him — bit busy — but he hums a note that makes him blush anyway. And Sam’s not useless anymore: he’s watching intently, and he starts to whisper soft things about how cute Dream is, and how his tummy is blushing like it’s embarrassed to be receiving such tender kisses. He holds his hands, scratches at his scalp, and continues a rambling monologue praising him for being so sweet and adorable.

Eventually Quackity stops. Dream watches him, clearly wanting something. …Quackity figures it out pretty quickly, but he still plays dumb to make him ask for more tummy kisses out loud.

guxisks ff omgggggg the cutest heckin thing?? quackity just being like “well i guess he’ll probably enjoy some kisses” is so cute :((

my immediate thought is would dream have recieved tummy kisses before?? maybe not?? would sap’s play have been too rough to include them in the early smp days? would george have been too reserved with his affection?? i feel like it’s plausible to say that quackity’s tummy kisses would be the first ones that dream would have ever experienced :((

i love how you described his reaction to itttt. like the panic in preparation for a raspberry, maybe even nibbles (particularly coz he knows he can’t squirm away too much),, the confusion, and then the bubbly giggles afterwards :(( like just not knowing how to react at all and not really understanding why it tickles. i love the idea of a certain spot below his belly button causing his legs to twitch and kick out (the best they can), and for his laugh to jump into cackles for a moment. and i also love the idea of him melting back into sam, and trying to twist to shield his face or at least hide himself away from the flustering sight of his belly bouncing between tickly kisses

sam gently crooning at him as well 😭 like everything you described there is so perfect (the blushing tummy 😭),, and his added forms of affection like hand holding and head pets,,, dream squirms the best as he can in his lap. also kinda love the idea of sam placing his own kisses into dreams temple and neck, all while he’s reminding dream about how cute and safe he is :(( and OMG dreams reaction to it stopping!!! like his belly is still buzzing from ghost tickles, giggles still tumbling out of his mouth,,, and yet as soon as he feels it stop he lifts his head up to meet the gaze of quackitys.

it’s pretty cute to imagine that he doesn’t even mean to show it on his face that he was enjoying the kisses, and that he would in fact want it to continue. and therefore quackity pointing it out and making him ask would be so much more flustery. like his realisation that he was that readable, and then the embarrassment of being encouraged to ask and admit that he was enjoying himself. he’s so cuteee ahhhhhh!!! and i LOVE that it’s quackitys idea i adore all of this omfggggg

also can’t help but think about tommy walking into this situation instead of the other one :(( like dream being double embarrassed and tommy just being so happy and proud 🥲

Dream SMP story time here:

Ok, so i know that some people have some problems with TVTropes, probably warranted, but it’s a wiki - it’s big and imo has a lot of useful stuff!  also it’s not totally their fault if dumb people say something is bad “because it’s a trope”

but anyway, one of the things they seem to have is the list of narrative foils in the Dream SMP page.  Like getting across dream smp stuff for people who don’t want to watch it for slow fun is complicated sometimes, but i’m trying!  and besides the “complete story” summary videos on youtube and some of the music videos, the foils page seems to be good because dream smp is so character driven.

anyway, the foils list is good (and almost complete i think it’s missing like 2 entences of nuance about tommy and tubbo but they’re big, they’re like the season 1 and 2 main cahracters)  but anyway it *is* incomplete in one other, in my opinion, big way.

God and now i’m finally getting to my main point

(this is a bit of a draft to make sure my ideas are gotten down somewhere)

Foils: Ranboo and Awesamdude (aka Sam) and Quackity

so this isn’t something i see many people talking about, maybe i’m just seeing it because Ranboo/Sam is like, my rarepair.  but there is some evidence and also it’s my rare pair in part because of the “narrative foils” thing.

anyway, Ranboo is a very interesting character, and he has the whole thing about having issues with short and long term memory, especially short term memory issues, and having different “parts” of himself that aren’t in accord.   and struggling with his awareness of that and keeping track by writing in books.  the fact that part of him in some way seems to have been talked into helping Dream (the villain) and the Angst surrounding that.

So Tommy (war) and Tubbo (peace) as this deep friend pair (or more, heheh) made sense as this main character/protagonist opposing Dream when Dream was operating as this bad person/warmonger and weapons dealer on this like grand political scale.  But ant the start of season 3 they imprison dream - yay! - so what happens to badness when you put the bad man in jail?  does it go away?  it kinda becomes a structural problem in the society with the jail.

Ranboo seeming to become more the “main character” in season 3 makes a fair amount of sense because he (both the character and the person who plays them, seriously you should see ranboo play haotful boyfriend) is much more Postmodern with a capital P and aware of “man versus himself” .

what are other things that are happening in season 3 / the jail arc as ranboo is doing his thing.  We can argue about the nature of Dream’s character, but i think one way to look at it is Dream was a nice person once, so however he got the way he is (which is it’s own essay) you can look at Dream-as-a-villain as being this.... beautiful and horrific urge he has towards sadism and control.  which is now somewhat baked into the prison, because it’s well, prison, and because Dream originally had it modified in order to torment tommy (and is now being hoisted by his own petard) but also seems to be cropping up in Sam (the prison builder and head warden) and Quackity (the..... complicated person in political power who got himself let in to conduct torture in the prison.).  I mean ffs, Quackity is starting to do the smiley face thing riffing off of Dream.

Note that both people can also be very kind (Sam) or idealistic (Quackity) people outside of this and Ranboo can be both kind and idealistic too (obvious if you’ve watched any of the character) and that’s important for the foil relationship.

So about being Foils:  this is a line from a fanfic and so definitely not taken as canon, but i think it sums up one of Ranboo’s big struggles very well “ You are in Pandora's Vault, a prison run by Awesamdude. You are here of your own accord, because you are a dangerous monster who needs to be kept away from everyone else at all costs. You are helping Dream without even knowing it. Dream is an evil, horrible man who hurts everyone you care about. But you help him anyways. You blew up the community house, you detonated the TNT that resulted in your best friend getting killed by Dream, you stashed away the prized disc for Dream, a disc that people would literally kill for. You should be here for a few years, at least. It's probably been about an hour since you got yourself locked in here.”

“ You are helping Dream without even knowing it. Dream is an evil, horrible man who hurts everyone you care about. But you help him anyways.” now who else does that sound like?  Kind Sam - who still doesn’t do torture himself, but allows others in to do torment, even if the person they’re tormenting is Dream?  Who through some real flaws in his prison safety plans is feeding Dream continued victims even while he’s supposedly in prison (tommy and ghostbur)?

What about Idealistic Quackity - who nonetheless does torments Dream would like in the name of stopping Dream, and who in order to get the political clout to do those tortures targets very young people (hi purpled and fundy.... man, sorry about getting all your shit taken by quackity and then being recruited by him.) in a way that’s similar to how Dream targeted Tommy and Tubbo for his sick relationships. and as i mentioned before, quackity is now doing the smiley face thingy.

Ranboo is interesting as a foil, because he’s if anything more directly controlled or overshadowed by Dream, he literally hears dream as a kind of psychic voice and there’s some possibly supernatural shit going down. (and omg, it’s also an interesting stroke having a person with memory issues as a opposite number for Dream, who has historically worked by gaslighting, but that’s another essay)  But he is also more aware, has more bathos about it.  Knows the limits of his mind aleready (see memory books), and can serve as a wayfinder because despite being more overshadowed.... he’s also more combative!?  While Quackity and Sam are confused, Ranboo’s also confused in a different way, and he’s not taking this lying down!

“let me in,... put me in the prison please, Sam!”  Is this Ranboo, aware that he helps dream and asking to be detained, or is this Sam, who has canonically said “this is my burden to bear” and locked himself into the prison and thaken on an almost 24/7 watch schedule when he isn’t sleeping to keep Dream inside.

“i need answers, and i know how to get them.”  Is this Ranboo doing more of his enderwalk “experiments” or is this Quackity, going in with the shears, warden’s torment, to torment Dream one more time?  And note that Ranboo’s experiments involve using his sensitivity to water to invoke a little pain and a lot of fear, which is kinda the definition of torture. Although he’s doing it on himself.

also related is how Sam and Quackity were very caring, but were corrupte by dream in their endeavors, sam’s first redstone device was the prison, designed by dream to torture tommy, and dream used quackity’s first forays into politics to exile tommy.  But this is getting long.
