Today’s #HistoryBooksatmyJob post was inspired by a conversation with a customer about The Negro Motorist Green Book aka the Green Book and another conversation with a coworker who has done three cross country drives in the past.

For those who don’t know what the Green Book was, it was created by African American mailman Victor Hugo Green in 1936. Initially the Green Book highlighted places in New York City where Blacks could safely get a hotel room, shop and dine without being refused service. Later editions of the book expanded to the rest of the United States, Canada, parts of the Caribbean and parts of Mexico.

You would think that the American idea of hopping into your car and going wherever the road led you applied to all. It did not. The book highlighted such perils that African Americans would face while on the road such as “Sundown Towns” and white only establishments, especially in the Jim Crow South. The book did an amazing job in trying to steer blacks to safe business that would gladly have their business. The book ceased publication in 1966. Here is the selection of books for this week:

Waylaid

Imagine, if you can, traveling in a less-than-stable foreign nation

like Afghanistan or Nigeria, driving down some nondescript road

when, for no particular reason, you are stopped by a pair of men.

They are armed, and they are wearing matching clothes, and they

are not smiling. They ask for your paperwork, and you realize that

your heart is pounding out of your chest. The barrels of their guns

are not pointed directly at you, but their hands are on the grips,

ready to pull the trigger. They order you to exit the vehicle, and

you instinctively ask why. They don’t answer you, and you look

around for witnesses. Does anyone see what is going on here?

Does anyone care? A moment ago, you were on your way to the

airport, and now you are wondering if you are ever going to see

your family again, picturing yourself lying dead on the side of a

dusty road, full of holes. The men poke around your car, mutter

to each other quietly, and then after what seems an eternity, they

allow you to get back into your car and drive away, and as you do,

sweat pouring down your back, you look in the rear-view just in

case they change their minds and decide to follow you; they don’t,

and now, you can finally breathe, but your hands are still shaking.

This is what it feels like to be a black male driver in America.

While this photograph was not taken for an article on the police harassing and killing Black drivers, it’s actually Dr Charles Moore photographed for Harvard Magazine for his work in community health care here in Atlanta, damn it jumped out with all that’s happening right now. I was reading a Twitter thread earlier where Black drivers were talking about their encounters with the police while doing nothing absolutely nothing more than driving their car to work, to the shops, to pick up their kids from school, to visit their parents. Bloody frightening stuff. Daunte Wright, 20, got killed by a white police officer Kim Potter on Sunday in a metropolitan area that was already on edge because of the trial of the first of four police officers charged in George Floyd’s death. Katie Wright said her son called her as he was getting pulled over. “All he did was have air fresheners in the car, and they told him to get out of the car,” Wright said. During the call, she said she heard scuffling and then someone saying “Daunte, don’t run” before the call ended. When she called back, her son’s girlfriend answered and said he had been shot. Body camera footage Gannon released less than 24 hours after the shooting shows three officers around a stopped car, which authorities said was pulled over because it had expired registration tags. When one officer attempts to handcuff Wright, a second officer tells him he’s being arrested on a warrant. That’s when the struggle begins and Potter shoots Wright. He died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office. Potter has experience with investigations into police shootings. Potter was one of the first officers to respond after Brooklyn Center police fatally shot a man who allegedly allegedly tried to stab an officer with a knife in August 2019, according to a report from the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. After medics arrived, she told the two officers who shot the man to get into separate squad cars, turn off their body cameras, and not to speak to each other. She was also the police union president for the department and accompanied two other officers involved in the shooting while investigators interviewed them. “I lost my son. He’s never coming back. I can’t accept that. A mistake? That doesn’t even sound right. This officer has been on the force for 26 years.
