Droste effect

Known in art culture as muse en abyme, is the effect of a picture appearing recursively to itself in a place one would realistically expect a similar picture to appear. This loop could theoretically go on forever, but in practice it only lasts as long as the resolution of the image allows.

Below - Prentententoonstelling or "Print Gallery" is a lithograph printed in 1956 by M. C. Escher. It depicts a man in a gallery viewing a print of a seaport, and among the buildings in the seaport is the very gallery in which he is standing, making use of the Droste effect with visual recursion. The lithograph has attracted discussion in both mathematical and artistic contexts. Escher considered Print Gallery to be among the best of his works.

On this day in 1969, Pink Floyd released a double album which brought a Cambridge piece of slang (for sex) to a much wider audience! Ummagumma consisted of a live record, and one split into four, which each band member given free rein with their quarter. The cover has a good example of the Droste effect, with the pictures within pictures being subtly different. 🎧

Recursive Gender / Recursigender

I did not coin "Recursive Gender" or this concept! I'm not sure who did but you can find others using it if you search (if you do have a source, please let me know so I can give proper attribution!). I did make Recursigender as an alternative term!

Recursion is the process of repeating items in a self-similar way, or simply "defining something in terms of itself". A procedure that goes through recursion is said to be 'Recursive'.

So a Recursive Gender would be one that repeats itself in a self-similar way and defines itself in terms of itself. An example would be "a boy who is a girl who is a boy who is a girl who is a boy who is a girl-[continuing on recursively in an infinite loop])".

Another example is one who is Recursively Bigender, with both of those genders being Bigender, and both of those genders within each of those genders being Bigender, and so on, recursively.

The flag was made by making a flag, then putting a smaller version of itself inside of it, then putting a smaller version of that flag inside of that flag itself, etc. etc.

I did this to reference the Droste effect, which is an example of Recursion where an image recursively appears within itself (in theory creating an infinite loop of the same image). The Ouroboros/Uroboros is used as a symbol to represent recursion, since the serpent is eating itself infinitely.

There's a little detail in Catapult's Operator Record that I feel gives some extra context on The Candle Knight's situation.

To give a brief overview, Catapult was worked as security for a small-town noble until she got fed up and blew open the stuffy old baron's vault, then fled the town while scattering his riches to the people.

She's on the verge of escaping for good when a guard notices her... but then The Candle Knight steps in and distracts the search party with her fame and prestige, letting Catapult escape for good.

The Candle Knight struggles with the concept of knighthood, as do most characters in Near Light. She appears to be the ideal knight: skilled in battle, elegant in bearing, honourable in her principles. And yet, what's it all for? She feels like she's just going through the motions, performing a role that ultimately holds no meaning.

That's what makes the Catapult incident interesting. It's implied Viviana was there as an envoy of the KGCC as part of plans to modernise the town and host regional knightsports there in an arena. She simply happened upon Catapult in that moment, and simply made her presence known to the guards before they found their quarry. For her in that moment, it was a simple act of kindness, the sort she'll probably forget within a few days. And yet, that ease was only possible because of her fame and prestige; without her renown, the guards wouldn't have spent so much attention or trust on her.

Viviana spends most of her time and energy on performing her role of being the ideal knight, and on maintaining her dignity in the face of corporate demands. She sends a significant portion of her winnings to charities in Leithanien, and she was willing to help Catapult with only a little knowledge of the situation. These actions are not small in impact, but they must feel “small” to Viviana because of how easy they are.

She finds she can only do the easy things – write a cheque, chat to some guards – and feels unfulfilled, unalive. It doesn’t matter that these things are only “easy” for her because of all the work she put in as a competition knight to build that wealth and fame, the work is simply too disconnected from the result. The good she does is relegated to a mere side effect of her life, even though it’s far more than the average person can achieve.

There’s no easy answer to her struggle, because when Near Light asks “what does it mean to be a knight?” it could just as easily ask “what does it mean to live a good life?”. You could say Viviana Droste’s problem is one of alienation, and in that sense she’s a very modern knight.
