Most Important Scenes - Kieu My Vu
Part 4 of my essays on favorite scenes for each character.
But you are good.
I would be lying if I said I was a Kieu My fan for the first half of the season. Because I didn't get her. All she was doing for the first 4 episodes, was sending Fatou the most mixed signals, from awkwardly flirting with her, to kissing her, to completely ignoring her and then making fun of her in front of her friends. I was completely on Fatous side when she told Kieu My how fake she was, because what else is she supposed to think?
And then it took exactly ONE scene to completely change my mind about her.
Here, she is telling Fatou about the amount of pressure she is under, being aware that she always lets people down and that she will never be good enough. After being this idealized crush of Fatou in season 5, and a confusing mess for the beginning of season 6, our mysterious 'Ice Queen' becomes a very vulnerable character all of a sudden.
Tumblr media
And Fatou, who was actually supposed to have the role of the 'Ice Queen' here, simply cannot take this anymore. "But you are good" she says, which isn't a big compliment or love confession or anything, but for Kieu My it is exactly what she needed to hear in that situation. Kieu My looks up at her for the first time, and what a look it is! In her eyes no longer shame or sadness, but hope. She might be hoping that Fatou maybe isn't as mad as she seems, that she didn't screw it all up with her, that maybe, she found a person to be good enough for. Whatever it is, just these four little words are enough for her to have the courage to take Fatous hand.
And with that, all my doubts about Kieu My have vanished. Kieu My? Fake??! Said Who??? Fatou, please stop pretending to be the Ice Queen here, can you two just kiss already and be happy little sapphics? Thanks.
There is the thing about being bi, for example.
I'm not going to give you a lecture about the need of good bi-representation in media here, but bi-erasure sadly is still an issue, and that is exactly why I loved seeing Kieu My talk about being bi.
Tumblr media
Because there is something unique to the struggles of being bisexual (I'm going to write about bisexualism here because Kieu My is bi, but the same is true for being pansexual). Some bisexual people feel being 'in between' the queer community and being straight, for example. Some never come out at all, because 'being straight is the safer option'. And the issue Kieu My is talking about here is the feeling of 'having to settle for one side' as soon as she enters a relationship. Which is an actual issue for some bisexuals, probably reinforced by questions like "Are you straight/gay now?" (which... no. Bisexuals are bisexuals.)
Again, I really love that Druck, between telling Fatou's story with all its up and downs, takes the time for adding these little nuances to the characters and their struggles, and with that educates its audience about issues which are not really talked about.
You are honest, confident, super funny and fucking brave.
Tumblr media
I really wanted to include this one, because not only is this the scene where Kieutou becomes official and we see how much effort Kieu My is willing to put in for Fatou (Climbing a roof??!), but it is also the first instance in which Kieu My is telling Fatou what she likes about her. We know that she is struggling with expressing her feelings at times, but hearing her speak here, it feels so natural. She is without doubts in telling Fatou what she likes about her, neither does she hesitate to ask her to be her girlfriend.
But with you... it's different somehow.
Tumblr media
And another scene where Kieu My is talking about her feelings, this time about her past experiences with love. With this, Druck creates a connection to the Kieu My we got to know in season 5 (rather cold, superficial, distanced), and explains why she was behaving this way (being scared of getting objectified/rejected).
And AGAIN, Druck is adressing an important issue here: fetishization. An issue which often gets ignored in media, but is super important to adress, as it is just another form of racism. And I think this is so well done, because how this topic is brought up is not forced or out of place. It is just another nuance of Kieu My's feeling of being reduced to her looks (just how the bi struggles fit into Kieu My's other issues of feeling pressured).
To end this on a more positive note, I think 'with you it is different' does not only show how hopeful and in love Kieu My is in this moment, but is also a really, really beautiful compliment.
Because then I see you. And how much love there is inside of you.
This is Nhungis favorite scene, and I can totally see why.
Fatou apologizes to Kieu My and tells her what she likes about her. She proves to her that she sees her, also the hidden parts.
Tumblr media
What I love about this, is that Kieu My also lets herself "be seen" by Fatou, because she is crying, unafraid of showing her emotions this time. Wiping away someone's tears is such an intimate gesture, and it is also pretty symbolic for what is happening in this scene. Fatou is apologizing for having hurt Kieu My, and, with her comforting words, taking away the pain she caused, making Kieu My smile again.
I love you.
Tumblr media
In the beginning of the season, Kieu My comes across as cold and superficial. We learn that she is confused, scared and under a lot of pressure. We follow her and Fatou on this 10 week journey of figuring each other out, learning how to communicate about issues and how to deal with conflicts. Kieu My learns how to open up and that this isn't a bad thing. This is her journey. She starts the season as being an "Ice Queen", and ends it with being the first one to say "I love you".
And, more importantly, after Fatou is not saying anything at first, she doesn't take it back. She doesn't run away this time, but continues to show affection for her (giving her the turtle). What a character development!

Ranking the SKAM Remakes!
Hi! This is my first ever time posting on Tumblr so I felt like it would be good to introduce myself. And what better way to do that on an account dedicates to SKAM than talk about my favourite remakes! This list goes from 7th to 1st place with 1 being the best.
In dead last…: SKAM FRANCE 🇫🇷: If you would’ve asked me what my favourite remake was 2 years ago, this one definitely would’ve been up there. The original actors were so perfect and the storylines felt totally realistic and relatable to me, despite being quite similar to the original SKAM. In season 3 when Eliott talks to Lucas about his bipolar and how with a mental illness you have good days and bad days, I felt totally seen. It felt like Eliott was speaking my truth. And then the original seasons came. I really season 5, in fact it’s my favourite season of the show. Season 6 was pretty good too, but after that the show just lost its appeal to me. It just feels like they pump out some random ‘big’ social issue for dramatic effect at the start of the season and expand on it a bit and then just go back to scenes of the Mif. And season 8, that was honestly just a mess. We didn’t even get to see Bilal in his new house! I’ve not seen seasons 9 or 10 yet but I don’t even know if I should bother. The show doesn’t feel like SKAM anymore and more like a French Euphoria. Do you guys think I should watch seasons 9 or 10? Tell me in the comments.
6th Place: WTFOCK 🇧🇪: For me, this remake is always pretty good. It’s never really been my favourite but I can see the appeal for others; it’s cute and Sobbe really do have great chemistry. But my issues for this show lie in 2 of its seasons: seasons 1 and 4. Personally, season 1 is always the hardest SKAM season to watch, I don’t know why but I never seem to properly connect with the Eva characters. But with Jana, I didn’t connect at all. I found her really annoying and whiney and she just made the season really difficult and boring to follow. Seasons 2 and 3 of this show are great, in fact I’d go as far to say that this show had the best season 2. But then we had season 4. I think it’s cool that they introduced Kato as a new character but her season was pretty bad. They had so much potential to give us a season about the differences between Instagram and reality, or even expand on Kato’s self harm a little bit more than just those 2 scenes. For me, watching the season didn’t really excite me at all. I liked season 5 though, even though Yasmin’s didn’t get the completely best ending, it did really well at illustrating how POC are pretty much always dealt the short end of the stick.
5th Place: Druck 🇩🇪: I don’t know what it was about this remake but I just never felt like it was giving me too much like the others. It’s a good solid remake that dares to be creative a bit whilst still staying true to the source material, but apart from that, that’s all I can really say about it. I liked Druck’s idea of giving a trans character the spotlight in season 3 and exploring the world of trans rights in German schools but the rest of this remake just feels so ‘meh’. It all just kinda fell flat and was really underwhelming. At the new seasons in this show still have an ounce of SKAM blood in them, I can actually kind of relate to some of the characters. In season 7 when Kieu My was talking about her struggles accepting her bisexuality, I totally understood what she felt because I’ve had very similar struggles with my sexuality. The new of seasons of Druck, like the original seasons, show a character developing and growing which is something I really like. Overall this show is a good solid remake, just a bit boring and flat in parts. 4th Place: SKAMNL 🇳🇱: This remake was so cute!! I’m currently watching it just now and it’s totally adorable! The girl squad seem to get on really well and they always have each other’s backs. My main criticism of the show is it’s season 2. Honestly, the guy who replaces Eskild just annoys me so much! He doesn’t seem as cool and supportive as the original and the whole vibe of the flatshare just feels off. Despite being adorable, season 2 just has really weird vibes and I’m not really a fan.
3rd Place: SKAM España 🇪🇸: The one thing I’m commending this show for is its inventiveness. It added so many differences to the original show that it was genuinely super interesting to watch. This show had one of the only few Eva seasons that I didn’t dislike. I also like the changes they made to seasons 3 and 4 and I felt like they were excellently done, perfect! Also Alejandro was so chill and the only William that I didn’t think was a toxic asshole! But then we had season 2. I loved the fact that they gave us sapphic representation and let it be a couple of 2 girls instead of another 2 skinny white boys kissing. As someone who likes girls themself, it was really great to finally see the representation that I’d been so needing from the skamverse. Unfortunately for me, the season just fell flat. It just felt the entire time like something was missing. It just felt kinda boring and uninteresting compared to the other Evak seasons. I’m really glad they made the season not spicy though and they managed to craft a cute love story without making it oversexualised. It was a pretty good show, but season 2 was kinda boring at points.
2nd Place: SKAM Austin 🇺🇸: This remake is so adorable it just makes my heart smile so much sjdjfhfgfhdjidjdhd. I really loved how cute and adorable everything was, especially Kelsey, she literally has my heart. Kelsey was definitely the best Vilde, now of course she has her moments but she’s so lovely and so supportive of everyone and I really liked her. I really enjoyed seeing how an American version of the show turned out and it’s honestly just awesome. The only criticism I really have of SKAM Austin is that because it’s American and it’s very American, I didn’t really relate fully to the characters and stories as much as I could have would it have been another European remake.
1st Place 🥇: SKAM ITALIA!!!!!!!!!! 🇮🇹: This show is perfect! The acting, the cinematography, everything is just beautiful. I really liked all of the seasons in this show and I’m glad they did them in the ways they did. In season 1 we saw Eva develop into a really good friend. In season 2, we saw Martino and Niccolò develop a beautiful romance but we were also shown what it’s like to be gay in Italy. It’s awful, we fear for our lives because the country isn’t necessarily the most accepting, especially the older generations. Season 3 was great too, Ele was given the time and space she needed to process her sexual assault and I’m glad that the show let her come to her boyfriend to talk about what happened instead of making her have the words taken from her mouth. In season 4, they managed to humanise Sana in a way that the other remakes didn’t. I love this show and I really hope they don’t ruin it with the original season that they announced at the start of the year.

okay so i'm not trying to make this a ~thing~ or a hot take or whatever, but can we talk about how all the hyped up queer shows still predominantly feature mlm couples? i'm not saying there aren't wlw shows/movies or the mlm-focused shows don't also feature wlw characters/couples, just... they either get nowhere near the same amount of hype, have some other main plot, end with at least one of them dying or experiencing something traumatic, get cancelled after one season in the middle of their arc, or they're not the main couple. And that's not to discount the representation you can get from secondary characters of course but just... ugh I want a heartstopper or rwrb or young royals or skam or love, simon or i don't even know... with girls. And I know I'm not the first person to bring this up and I know it's not that simple, but seeing all the hype for heartstopper and rwrb this week makes my heart ache a little bit so i needed to say this somewhere.

Most Important Scenes - Fatou Jallow
Part three of my essays on favorite scenes for each character
Honestly, for Fatou I could pick almost any scene of her season and write an 10 page essay about why this scene is important and changed my life forever. And I don't even have Sira's favorite scene as a reference point, because she wasn't there during the interviews.
Anyways, in order to keep it as short as possible, I tried to restrain myself by picking my two favorite scenes from season 6.
This is a friendship proposal.
I have a very soft spot for well-developed friendships in general, but the friendship between Fatou and Ava really is on another level. This can be seen in their dynamic, the way they communicate, how they share intimate moments, how they defend each other in front of their friends even when the other isn't there. And it becomes most obvious with Fatou's apology to Ava.
I really want to highlight this, because in every Druck season, our protagonist is involved in some kind of personal struggles, which does not only cause drama between them and their love interest, but also always involves some kind of fight among friends. Therefore we see a lot of different apologies throughout the seasons. But no apology -in the whole Druck cinematic universe- ever comes CLOSE to what Fatou did for Ava.
Tumblr media
Kneeling down on her knees, playing chords on her guitar while apologizing for not being there for her, and emphasizing how important Ava is to her. Preparing the whole setting with rose pedals and wine, as if this was a literal marriage proposal. Of course this is an over-dramatic gesture, but that is what Fatou intended it to be. After being distracted and unable to focus on Ava and her needs for the last weeks, Fatou is like: Let me make it up to you by putting you in the center of the universe for this evening. You're my best friend and I want you back at my side. You deserve a ton of affection, and tonight is all about you.
And what happens afterwards, in my opinion, is even more important. The two of them sit down and Fatou wants to hear about what is going on in Ava's life. She really takes time to actively listen to her. When she says something, it isn't about her, but about Ava (follow-up questions, advice, comforting remarks). Listening to another person is such an underrated gesture in friendships, and I really love how it got emphasized as something really important in the season.
One last aspect I liked about this, is the sequence of events. Friendships often get sidelined for the romantic plot, but this was not the case here. Fatou first apologizes to Ava, then to Kieu My.
I made a list of things that are so beautiful about you.
Speaking of Fatou's apology to Kieu My, this might be my favorite Druck scene ever.
Tumblr media
It adresses Kieu My's fear of getting reduced to her looks. Of not getting seen as a whole person, with needs and feelings and flaws. And Fatou takes that fear from her, by telling her all those little things she likes about Kieu My (none of which is related solely to her appearance).
I love this, because It shows that even if Fatou has appeared to be somewhere else with her mind at times, she was always paying attention to Kieu My.
I also love this because shows the journey of Fatou's vision of Kieu My. First, she was her -rather superficial- crush. The things Fatou knew about Kieu My were very little, most of it based on assumptions, daydreams and idealized features. But then they got to know each other, and Fatou observed and picked up on the little character details of Kieu My, learning that she really likes them.
Of all these little details, what Fatou likes the most about Kieu My is seeing her laugh. She says "because then I see you, and how much love there is inside of you." which means that she does everything but looking at Kieu My in a superficial way. While it was often assumed that Kieu My is an 'Ice Queen', hiding away her feelings, pretending not to care, Fatou has seen beyond and through that. The 'Real Kieu My' is the one showing her emotions and because Kieu My is afraid of doing that, scared of getting hurt again, Fatous apology is not only that, but also a reassurement: Kieu My can be her real self around Fatou, and Fatou sees, accepts, and loves her like that.
