Phastos was a pacifist. He was a ‘thinker,’ not a ‘fighter.’ If there was a way to resolve a conflict peacefully with no potential loss of blood or bodily fluid, then he would take it. His inventions may have martial uses, but he remained steadfast in using his mind for peace and not violence. He lived this way for 7,000 years on Earth, and he would like it very much to keep it that way.

But lord-y lord, was he sorely tempted to break that right now.

“How could she not tell me?” you asked incredulously. “I mean, how could she not tell me?”

“Get out.” he told you.

Out of every one of his old family, Phastos was definitely not one to be ashamed to admit that he played favorites, and there was most definitely a ranking system. He wasn’t so petty to reveal who were at the bottom Sprite, but he knew it was obvious who were his favorites. Out of the remaining eleven members, he adored you and Sephia above everyone else. His love for the two of you reached to the point he considered the both you to be his sisters, and his respect went so far as to hold you two to a higher esteem than he held Ajak.

“I mean seriously, ME? What the fuck?”

“Please, get out.” he repeated in hopes that you would listen.

And of course, you didn’t.

Normally Phastos would more than happy with you visiting. After all, you and Sephia were the only ones that Phastos really trusted to be around his family so that his son could have a chance of a normal childhood without ‘excessive’ trauma. Jack adored his Aunties ‘Sophia’ and ‘Katie,’ and you both loved him. And while he would never admit it, he truly appreciated how either you or Sephie would happily take Jack off his dads’ hands so that they could spend some quality time together after he and Ben brough Jack home from the hospital.

But he would really appreciate it if you hadn’t just magicked yourself into his living room before barging yourself in the bathroom with him while he was showering so that he could prepare for an important interview with the magnet school Jack’s currently being waitlisted on. He’d appreciate even more if you picked up the very subtle hints that he’s been dropping while you were currently pacing on the other side of the shower curtain.

“He’s lying,” you went off, “he’s a lying liar – that’s it, that has to be it. I would know if my soul sister was in a relationship with someone.”

“Get out.” Maybe if he repeated it enough with gradual emphasis, it might actually sink into her head.

“I’m actually being gaslighted-” a cold blast of air hit his back as you pulled the curtain to one side – “Phastos this is criminal-”

Immediately pulling back the curtains to retain some sense of his dignity, Phastos decided that enough was enough. “Get out!”

Taken back, you asked: “What’s your problem?”

“What’s my problem- Kaety, I am in the shower. I am wet and n a k e d.” Phastos stressed the last word to point out the very glaring fact that he was wet and not wearing any clothes.

“Okay, and? I’ve seen it all before, no big deal! I’m in the middle of a crisis here!”

Did you really fail to see how fucking weird this situation was?

Feeling a migraine coming in, he needed to get you out so he could finish his shower in peace for five goddamn minutes. Looking you in the eyes, Phastos did his best to give you his best “I’m Pissed” stare.

Letting out a sigh, he thought that maybe you finally took the hint and would leave.

“Alright, fine,” you reasoned out, “your junk is…spectacular, really great. 10 out of 10, would bang you if you were straight and I wasn’t already madly obsessed with Druig’s nether regions. Ben is truly a lucky man…can we get back to me now?”

“…”

“Why are you making that face?” you groaned in distress.

“Kaety, I know I said that my door would always been open for you. But I have a very important interview with that magnet school for Jack, alright? Me and Ben have been prepping for this afternoon for over 3 months. I am sleep-deprived, I need to shower, and I need to be focused. Whatever you’re going through, go to Sephie, okay?”

“…It’s Ben and I.”

“Why are you here anyway? And where are the girls? Did you just leave them at the compound?”

“What? No, the girls are downstairs playing with Jack. Druig and Ben are watching over them.”

“Oh my god- Druig’s here too?”

“Well, what was I supposed to do? Leave my kids without telling the love of my life? Phastos, what kind of mother and wife do you think I am?”

“…Just get out.”

You were just about to leave when you finally registered what he said earlier - and you immediately turned back.

“HOLD UP!” you shouted as pulled the curtain again as Phastos pulled it back, “You mean to tell me that you haven’t been listening to me this ENTIRE TIME?”

“No, I haven’t! And I don’t particularly care about it right now!” he shouted whilst standing under the shower head to finally finish washing himself. “Just tell me later! When I am NOT NAKED!”

Still determined to get a proper reaction, you made sure to project very loudly. “SO, it wouldn’t interest you to know that I caught Ikaris and Sephie HAVING SEX?!”

“WHAT?!” This time, Phastos was the one to pull the curtains back. “NO! Wait- that’s- that’s- NO! Why would- NO!”

“Thank you.” you calmly stated before pulling his curtain between you two once more as you finally exited the bathroom- leaving your Inventor brother to stand under the streaming water in a state of extreme shock at the most horrific news he’s received since Thanos’ Snap.

“What the hell did you do?”

Druig looked at the scene before him. Blood painted the floor, a chill was in the air. Everything was wrong. He looked at your body on the floor, dropping to his knees. When he reached out to touch you, your skin was already starting to turn cold.

“What needed to be done,” Ikaris said, watching as Druig collected you in his arms, cradling your body close to his chest. “You cannot be having feelings for humans. That is not our mission.”

“Part of our mission was not to interfere,” Druig said, trying to not choke on his tears. “How could you do this?”

You had been Druig’s closest friend, aside from Makkari. Since coming to kill the Deviants who were harming your town, he had found himself enjoying your company. Druig had never bothered developing any sort of relationship with a human before, but you had been so easy to be around. You were a curious person, wanting to hear about the places beyond your town, what he had seen, what he had done. And he had wanted to know what it was like to be human, to know that your days were numbered but to continue on anyways.

“You should have expected this, Druig. You know that all humans die in the end.”

“Don’t you dare act like you’re so high and mighty just because all you care about is yourself.”

“I care about the mission. As should you.”

“Get out!” Druig shouted, his anger blinding him.

Ikaris left him alone, leaving Druig with you in the small home. With his fellow Eternal gone, he let himself finally begin to cry, tears streaking down his face. You were gone, and he hadn’t been there to protect you. What kind of friend was he? How could he have not foreseen this happening? Ikaris had always had a darker side to him. Druig should have known better.

He should have known better.

Maybe you would still be alive if he hadn’t been so blind fully trusting.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered, reaching up, shutting your eyes for you. “I’m so sorry. I should have been better. I should have known better. I promise you, Y/N, I will never let anything like this happen again. I swear it.”

And so began his disillusionment of the grand mission he and his Eternals had been sent on.

I think where I've landed on my Wanda Maximoff journey is that if she had done what Druig did, I honestly would have liked her more. (This is in reference to the common fan argument that liking Druig and not Wanda is unfair because they did the same thing.) Like, if Wanda, with the same backstory she already had, with all the same prior MCU appearances, started off Wandavision maintaining a community of people she kidnapped with mind control, and she was focused on keeping their lives peaceful and isolated, and they spent most of their time not being directly controlled by her, etc., I would have been able to get on board with that. I know that, because I was fairly on board with her for the first couple of episodes of the show, and that was after years of disliking the character (for both fair and unfair reasons).

The thing I hated wasn't the kidnapping itself; it was the fact that she kidnapped them with the purpose of using them as dolls in the background of her domestic fantasy and completely disregarding their well-being whenever it didn't factor into her game. It was the fact that it felt no different from what she did in Age of Ultron, when she set the Hulk on a civilian town of black people and largely disregarded the danger she was causing them. I gravitate toward characters who care about people ("people" as a general term, not "people" as in their particular friends) and I never felt that there was more evidence that Wanda did care about people than that she didn't.

Sorry, I just had to analyze this again, because usually I love female characters who start cults. It's actually kind of my jam. (Cults are bad in real life; I'm talking about in fiction.)

Druig never really gave it much thought. Mortality, that is. He had lived for thousands of years. He had seen the rise and fall of civilizations. He had seen life, and he had seen death. He was familiar with the concept, but he never thought about it beyond it being the natural cycle of life. Humans were born, humans lived, and, one day, humans would die.

That was not to say he didn’t value human life. Of course he did. In his years on Earth, he had come to love humans and the way they interacted with the world. Sure, he didn’t like the conflict, especially when he had the means to stop it. But to see humans live, and love, and all the things in between…Druig loved that. He appreciated that.

But then he met you.

You were the daughter of a farmer. He remembered when Phastos introduced the plow to your father and the fellow farmers. He remembered how you smiled so appreciatively, talking about how now you could harvest twice as much as before. Now you could feed not only your family, but others in the village. Perhaps one day soon, you would harvest more food than what you would know what to do with.

Druig was intrigued by you. He found himself going to the fields more and more, just for the chance to see you. To maybe talk to you. You were kind. Unequivocally kind. You cared about your family. You would do anything to protect them. He remembered how, when an older kid was picking on your little brother, you ripped him apart with your words, made it impossibly clear that no one was to mess with your family.

But he especially remembered how you smiled at him when he introduced himself to you.

“Hello. I’m Druig,” he told you when he came to the fields with Phastos, his fellow Eternal delivering new tools for the farmers to use. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Your eyes twinkled in the the sunlight as you looked up at him, a smile overtaking your face. “I’m Y/N. Thank you so much for your help. Our village appreciates it more than you can imagine.”

Druig’s face burned red. He hoped you might think it was a result from being in the sun for so long. “I would do anything to help you.”

“Our village will never be able to thank you enough.”

So selfless, he had thought. Druig had met many people over his time on Earth, but there was no human quite like you. And that, he realized, was maybe one of the most heartbreaking things about you.

As an Eternal, Druig knew he could never have a relationship with you beyond friendship. He thought he was fine with that. As long as he could be a part of your life in some way, he was happy. But as he watched you lived your life, wrinkles slowly beginning to form on your face, hairs turning grey, he realized that he wished for more. He wished that he could be yours and you could be his.

But he knew that he would hurt too much. That he would lose you. He had seen people live, and he had seen people die. It had never hurt before. Before you, that is. He cared about you, and he knew your time on Earth was finite. If you did not die of old age, it could be any number of things. Illness, being killed, an accident…

One day, and one day soon in the grand scheme of things for Druig, you would be gone. And there was nothing he could do to stop it. Because, after all, it was an Eternal’s job to not interfere.
