Texas drunken drivers who kill a child’s parent or guardian in a crash are now liable to pay child support, according to legislation that went into effect Friday.
Texas House Bill 393, also known as Bentley's Law, was first filed Nov. 14 of last year. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill June 2.
According to the law, intoxicated manslaughter culprits are only on the hook until the child turns 18 years old or finishes high school.
The amount of child support depends on multiple factors, including the child's educational needs, medical needs and any reasonable child care costs. The standard of living that the child is used to is also considered.
Anyone who is unable to make payments due to incarceration may be eligible for a payment plan.
I love this new law. Drunk drivers take away so many lives, including taking away a child’s parent(s). Other states should do the same.

i feel like the demonization of people who drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs is a problem, actually. like yes we all have been told it's dangerous, but if you haven't noticed, substances affect your thinking. and in some situations, i imagine it isn't as easy to just "get a ride" or "walk home" as people think. driving may not be safe for them or others, but people who use substances are... people. they're not uniquely evil. there's no difference between you and them that makes you immune to doing the same fucking thing, or other dangerous things that you don't think twice about.

Does your activism and positivity include drunk drivers?
this is probably a hate anon but im going to dignify it with a response anyway. because yes, it does.
disclaimer: i am not saying drunk drivers bare no responsibility for their actions. they do, as we all do. part of why we (all people) are responsible for our actions is bc we have awareness of them. we can make choices. and when our capacity for choice and awareness is diminished (i.e, when we are mentally disabled), our responsibility is too. note that i say diminished, not gone. that's important.
anyway. i know people with DUIs and they have grown into much safer, happier people. people can change, and addicts (disabled people) need support to make that change. disability (human) rights cannot depend on someone's morality. they wouldn't be rights otherwise. they'd be privileges... and we all know turning rights into privileges leads to oppressions.
