I think an interesting idea with the “they planned out the entire game on a script” plot is that, at least from how I understand it, Tsumugi more-or-less lost total control of the script by chapter 4 thanks to Ouma. I’m almost positive everything that happened from Ouma taking control of the keycard onward was off script and Tsumugi was having an internal panic attack basically the entire time.
OH YEAH don't get me wrong I think there are Parts that she planned. All the motives to get people to kill were her idea, what she hadn't planned out in that regard was who exactly would take the bait (though of course, for ones like the motive videos some were more likely than others).
She did NOT see Kokichi taking that keycard and refusing to use the motive in the "proper way" or like. Anything that happened in ch5. I'm gonna be honest, I know the final real key and the real final key are the "motives" of ch5 according to monokuma but I don't really see how ?? Kokichi and Kaito certainly weren't motivated by them anyways

Danganronpa Fic Recs!!
Tumblr media
In my six years of being a Danganronpa fan I've read a lot of fanfiction, so I've decided to compile a list of some of my personal favourites (in no particular order) for your perusal. Contains very minor plot spoilers, but nothing beyond what the tags/descriptions will tell you. Bear in mind these are mainly V3 because that's my favourite, but there are a couple of others. Enjoy :D
Tumblr media
New Danganronpa V3BOOT: Killing Harmony Redux - EternalSailorNeptune_53.
Unique in the fact that not only is it a Talentswap AU, but a Simulation AU as well. The general premise is that DRV3 wound up being such a monumental disappointment of a season that Shirogane is forced to rewrite it and try again.
Something that stands out about this fic in particular is its characterization. It tweaks the personalities and backstories of the cast to fit their new talents, all while remaining fundamentally true to their canon counterparts. There's a new death order, new motives, and all of the jokes hit. It's really funny but also made me cry at a few points. Ships include SaiMatsu, KoreKichi, TenMiko and some mild ShinToujo.
Words: 598,513
Chapters: 53/53 (Completed)
2. Taming the Wild Ones - DRonpaFanGirl
Hajime centric talentless AU. It's been quite a while since I've read this one, but if memory serves, it's set in a boarding school for troublemakers that Hajime gets sent to after getting into one too many fights. It explores the relationships between the characters, and touches on themes of mental health. It's written in the first person which I know can be a deterrent for many, but the dialogue is so good that it's easy to look past even if you usually don't like that sort of thing. There's a sequel that I haven't read yet myself, but I'm sure it's probably just as entertaining as the first one. Ships include Komahinanami (with a heavier focus on Hinanami than Komahina & Komanami), + background Saimatsu, Kaimaki, Izuru/Celestia, and Mondo/Mukuro.
Words: 100,334
Chapters: 71/71 (Complete)
3. The Powerful Skeletons Series - EternalLoveSong
Another V3 Talentswap AU, except this time it's a collection of shorter fics, currently about 27 of them, set in the same talentswap universe. It features Supreme Leader Maki, Assassin Kokichi, Inventor Shuichi, and Servant Rantaro to name a few, and each character gets the spotlight at some point. I don't have a lot to say about these but they're very good.
Words: 95,923 Total
4. Alternative Ending, New Beginning - CrowSandwhich
V3 Chapter 5 canon divergence AU, in which various factors (Maki) cause Kokichi's plan to backfire before he can complete it. Due to his injuries, he winds up confined to the hangar by the rest of the survivors, under the belief that he's the mastermind. Incredibly engaging, but tragically discontinued. Kokichi & Kaito centric, no ships.
Words: 36,523
Chapters: 6/6 (Discontinued)
5. Irreplaceable - apollo_python
Set many years after the events of V3. The participants of the final killing game have all disappeared under mysterious circumstances, with the exception of Shuichi and Kokichi, who've been out of contact and down on their luck since the game ended. At Shuichi's insistence, they take it upon themselves to find their missing former classmates. A Saiouma thriller/mystery with a heavy focus on their relationship. Ships include Saiouma, and background Kaimaki/Irumatsu.
Words: 31,827
Chapters: 3/? (Unfinished)

Kokichi ??? Protag + Kaito Supreme Leader Talentswap
Tumblr media
So we have a pretty clear lead going on in the poll right now. I'd be surprised if another choice manages to surpass this one, but if one does I'll get to that one next!
I'll start by covering my notes for the overall explanation, Ch. 1, and Ch. 2 of this concept; I thought I'd be able to do it all in one go but it's getting really long (both in word length, and in the amount of time I've spent putting this together!)
Let's get into it!
Preamble:
So Kaito has pretty insane influence over the whole DRV3 group (except Kokichi). I mean, after viewing the Chapter 3 Flashback Light, all it takes is for Kaito to say he doubts it for everyone else in the group to disbelieve it as well (...except Kokichi, because of course he doesn't care what Kaito thinks). Same with Kaito swaying everyone to use the first Flashback Light in Chapter 2. All in all... he's honestly pretty terrifying to me. And that's when he's supposed to be your ally! So with this in mind, I started thinking of a talentswap where Kaito takes on an antagonistic role as the Ultimate Supreme Leader!
In other words, the core concept behind this talentswap is: Kaito as Supreme Leader. Spoiler alert: he's terrifying
Now at the start of brainstorming this story concept, I actually did mention how "we can't ever have Kokichi as a protagonist. That just doesn't work, he's not protagonist material. It's the kinda lame thing Kokichi fans who like him too much do" and well guess what I am now
Jokes aside, this is probably the one concept where I could see a Kokichi protag working, since we'd need someone capable of standing up against Kaito to be our protagonist. The next best candidate is Kaede, I'd say, but she's had her chances (I came up with the Kaede Assassin protag talentswap before this one, too). Plus, Kokichi's talent (or rather, lack of known talent) makes him particularly vulnerable and forces him to rely more on others than he'd do otherwise, allowing him to be more protagonist-like, so to speak.
And before we get into things... I, completely on accident, set up this talentswap to be very self-indulgent. By that I mean I came up with this talentswap with my sibling Sebec and I started assigning talents and roles excitedly until Sebec pointed out "hey. Doesn't this basically set up your favourite ship?" and the realization led me to scream in agony for 30 minutes
So, without further ado...
Concept: Prologue + Ch. 1
Obviously we have the usual: wake up in a locker, meet everyone, oh my god killing game
Where things really begin to diverge is when Kaede starts trying to take charge.
In canon, during his free time events with Kaede, Kaito actually mentions that he would've started leading the group himself if Kaede hadn't beaten him to it. While she's alive, he's nice enough to not obstruct Kaede's efforts at least (although his peers bash him the whole time for seeming lazy for it)
In this talentswap, Kaito is not nearly as nice. Evidently, an Ultimate Supreme Leader with his personality wouldn't want to be shown up by any of his peers. So from here, we have a split in the group as they become divided into two; like a more extreme, exciting, and prolonged version of canon's Chapter 3.
Our two teams are as follows:
Kaito Momota, the Ultimate Supreme Leader
Maki Harukawa, the Ultimate Detective
Shuichi Saihara, the Ultimate Cosplayer?
Himiko Yumeno, the Ultimate Tennis Pro
Tsumugi Shirogane, the Ultimate (Makeup) Artist
Miu Iruma, the Ultimate Magician
Ryoma Hoshi, the Ultimate Anthropologist
Korekiyo Shinguji, the Ultimate Entomologist
Kirumi Tojo, the Ultimate Aikido Master
Gonta Gokuhara, the Ultimate Prisoner
and...
Kaede Akamatsu, the Ultimate Adventurer
Kokichi Oma, the Ultimate ???
Keebo, the Ultimate Inventor (still a robot, as I tend to do with my talentswaps)
Tenko Chabashira, the Ultimate Survivor
Rantaro Amami, the Ultimate Child Caregiver
Angie Yonaga, the Ultimate Maid
Turf wars!! Woohoo!!! So obviously, with Chapter 1 comes the First Blood Perk. And Kaito Momota does not like the First Blood Perk. Kaito Momota wants an exciting killing game, with an exciting class trial. Thus, he decided to cause problems on purpose.
That's right! Kaito Momota engineered the first case by targeting the Ultimate Prisoner, Gonta Gokuhara. But he can't just kill Gonta because then he'd miss the rest of the killing game! Here's where the content warning comes in; do be careful reading the next two passages (please).
Unfortunately, Mister Gokuhara is very unaware of his own strength. As in, he is prone to manslaughter level unaware. He was raised by prison family! Sometimes they went away, but they always came back... (kill me)
Kaito, being a benevolent Supreme Leader who spreads the truth, took it upon himself to inform Gonta that he was a danger to society. And with this knowledge, Gonta took his life into his own hands; thus bypassing the First Blood Perk.
(I think??? this is dark humour??? god I feel like a sadist right now)
In the first class trial, Kaito insinuates that the culprit must be someone who wants the whole group dead, hence they didn't take the First Blood Perk. This leads Maki to point the direction of doubt towards Tenko, the Ultimate Survivor. Unlike canon's Rantaro, Survivor Tenko had full knowledge of what being the Ultimate Survivor meant. Alongside that, she shared that knowledge with the group. Maki reasons that the Ultimate Survivor doesn't just want to escape the killing game; rather, they play the game to win.
So from there Kokichi and co. have to fight back and reveal the truth, etc. Though I don't have details brainstormed for this segment, I would like to throw in that Kokichi's class trial gameplay would feature a lie detection mechanic; ironically, this would replace V3's gameplay element of lying, meaning Kokichi doesn't end up lying in class trials. Fun, huh?
I envisioned that you'd be prompted to pick out a statement as a lie out of a section of the trial's transcript, so to speak, but could pick many of the statements with only one being correct. Other statements would send you down winding branching paths, with some leading back to the correct path after detecting enough lies, and some being dead ends which might give a clue to the right answer. Kind of like extreme versions of the back routes.
On to Chapter 2!
After the first class trial, Kokichi heads out for a walk in the courtyard at night, as he is wont to do. For some reason he's really restless at night. Never really feels like sleeping.
Now, what Kokichi doesn't know is that someone's watching him!! That someone is on the second floor of the academy, and they are an excellent sniper. This would be the Ultimate Assassin, Shuichi Saihara, who used his skill in disguise to claim the title of Ultimate Cosplayer. Mister Saihara has been put up to eliminating Kokichi by none other than Kaito Momota. Our assassin friend figures he can just put a few bullets through Kokichi and call it a day.
So he shoots him once.
Kokichi seems rather resilient, though, and isn't knocked down.
So Shuichi shoots him again. And again. He shoots Kokichi through the head. He has to be dead now, he's even fallen onto the ground.
So Shuichi stops shooting and leaves to retrieve Kokichi's body, hoping he can hide it to avoid a class trial.
...Kokichi is not dead.
Mostly because he was never alive to begin with.
When Shuichi stops shooting him, Kokichi drags himself to the dorms and knocks on the Ultimate Inventor, Keebo's, door.
And y'know what Keebo says to him?
"... Y-you... are not human."
"Yeah, I kinda noticed."
Kokichi Oma is actually the Ultimate Robot, so realistic that he could pass for human. And Keebo finds that not only has he sustained heavy damage from being shot a couple dozen times, he is also low on battery. It's a good thing he figured out he was a robot before he ran out of power.
Apparently that's the most notable event of Chapter 2. I wrote in my notes that Rantaro was killed, but I didn't specify by whom; just know that it's someone on Kaito's side.

World's End Dance Hall — Kokichi Oma x reader
꒰ cw .ᐟ drv3 chapter 5 spoilers, lowercase intended, third person(if we don't count the internal dialogue which is in first), gn reader, wc 288 ꒱
Tumblr media
"i know what you're planning. i know you're dying tomorrow." they said as they looked him directly in the eye. they would've seemed completely stoic if it weren't for the way their voice shook.
"please, just... if you can find it in your heart, spare me once last dance."
he sighed wearily, then agreed.
the two of them swayed through the halls to the sound of their heartbeats, losing themselves in the comfort of each other and trying their hardest to forget the reality of their situation--if only for a bit. neither of the two lovers knew how much time they passed in the embrace before they seperated, looked at him with a bittersweet smile, muttered a soft "goodbye", and turned away to their dorm--not waiting to hear his response.
they woke up the next morning feeling something between contentment and dread. they tried their best to brush it away with a "what's done is done", getting up to head to the bathroom and going about their daily routine as though nothing was wrong.
when the body was found, they forced themselves to remain composed--to go through the same old song and dance they'd done the past four times. investigate, wait for the trial, go to the room, and keep the suspicion on kokichi.
they found out the truth. everything was going according to plan until shuichi pointed out the clothes in the toilet and from there it spiraled out of control and it would've been too suspicious if i'd tried to deny it by then. i think i can hear the rocket blasting off, but it sounds so faint. i can't tell.
two more people have died in vain. i failed you.
i'm *so* sorry.

DRv3 Revival!AU
So here's an idea I had, it’s a DRv3 Post Game AU
(Spoilers for ch6 and minor part in ch3 v3)
After the academy collapses, Maki, Shuichi, and Himiko basically go around the place seeing what's left.
Under some of the rocks they find the book from chapter 3, and I can't remember what it was about but let's act like it talks about bringing back the dead in it somewhere.
While reading it they accidentally bring back Rantaro from the dead, and then decide to bring back everyone else as well.
They're not fully alive, they still have the scars and reminents that represent their deaths and all that, as well as what happened to them throuhhout. But they're physically there, conscious, and back to 'normal'
So all together they 'rebuild the academy'.. in their own way. They turn it into a place all of them can live in together, using reminents of the labs, pool, and whatever else.
(I'm not purposely saying reminents, but pun intended)
It takes a couple of months to get it together, but it's easy to manage because they don't have to grow as much food.
Only Maki, Shuichi, and Himiko need to consume food. And they're also technically the only ones that need sleep, it won't kill the others but it still affects them. However out of everyone Kokichi and Tsumugi are effected by not sleep the most, possibly even more than Maki, Himiko, and Shuichi.
I'll work on designs later, but here's some basic notes:
(kgs means killing game survivors)
Whole note - No one talks about the kg or the ultimates but when a reference or comment slips through things can go both good or bad
Rantaro 🥑
Does not eat guacamole
Pretty much everything else is the same
A slight antagonistic cool dude
Insane but good intention vibes (but not really because he’s chill and cool)
Kaede 🎹
Often seen playing piano in one of the off rooms
Kind, but a bit more quiet and shy
Ryoma 🎾
Usually seen in the tennis court
Often challenges the others to games
Kirumi 🖐️
Helps around a lot
Often seen in the kitchen or in a lab helping Miu with fixing something if she needs extra help
More ghost like than the others
She can make roses bloom from her hands but only at night when she’s outside
Usually at night if she’s taking a break (uncommon but the others helped convince her to do so more often) she’ll be in the greenhouse or the garden next to the fountain
Angie 🎨
Built an art studio
Just as annoying and playful as ever, sometimes Kokichi helps her with her shenanigans
Tenko 🥋
Still calls he males degenerates but it’s leaning a bit more towards the joking side (not really though)
Will beat you up (male)
Will kiss you (with consent) (female)
Shuichi is pretty much the only male exempt
Korekiyo 👻
Usually people call him Kiyo unless it's serious or upsetting
Doesn’t share a body with his sister anymore, though he still wears the makeup
Miu ⚙️
Still calls herself the Golden Girl Genius
Gives the most ridiculous nicknames
Slightly better friends with Kokichi
Rebuilt a lot of the area, as well as upgraded some parts
Made a sci-fi v3 room (that won’t kill)
Made a simulation room to create the old academy
Can transfer from electronically device to device as long as the cord connects
Usually pops in TVs while others are using them so she can prank them or gather everyone to showcase a new invention
Gonta 🪲
Runs the greenhouse
Found a family of bugs that survived the academy collapsing and nurses them
Got help from Miu to rebuild his lab and now he raises bugs
Big strong man takes care of kgs when they're sick or I'll
Kokichi 👑 (tw talk/mention of guts)
Usually seen in his room or active at night, despite his prank playful attitude
Mute and Deaf, also vision is severely obscured
Uses a cochlear implant Miu made and eye contacts he stole borrowed from Tsumugi
Often takes breaks from hearing, you'll usually know this is the case if his eyes are closed because the blurry vision makes him sick/dizzy (also takes out contacts)
Can reform vocal cords to slurrly talk although it hurts him a bunch
Doesn't have a solid form but keeps one not to scare the others, this can mess up with panic attacks and anxiety though
Literally has the ability to rip out his guts or an eyeball
Kaito 🚀
Loves space
Miu built him an entire sci fi lab
Miu also built a vr mode to explode space (in the vr room)
Training trio was put on hold but he’s still waiting
Tsumugi 👗 (tw talk/mention of guts)
Usually seen in her room or active at night
Also doesn't have a solid form like Kokichi, holds one for same reason
Vision was already impared so Miu just fixed her glasses
Deaf in her left ear, can talk although it hurts a little (whisper talking)
Used her cosplay making skills to become a ‘fashion design’ (she makes the clothes for most of everyone)
Sometimes gets help from the others but usually Miu or Oma if this is the case
Gets the girls to model for her, and sometimes Oma because he’s surprisingly a really good model
Became ‘best friends’ (really good friends) with Kokichi because of this
Kiibo 🤖
Everyone calls them Kiibo (K1-B0 is like his dead name almost)
Enby but he/they pronouns
Can explode on command but Miu has to rebuild him
Miu accidentally installed a self destruct button on his back (that Kokichi keeps pressing)
Decent friends with Miu and Kokichi now
Maki 🔪
She’ll kill you in your sleep
Don’t eat her ice cream
Don’t joke about her period
If she’s on her period lock yourself in your room
Leave the ice cream in eyesight (keep in frozen still)
Don’t sleep
She’s watching you
Himiko 🪄
Monday Magic shows with Himiko
Doesn’t really want Tenko’s ‘protection’ but she lets it happen
Friendship with Kokichi and Rantaro has improved, as well as Tsumugi too ig
Shuichi 🔎
Kaede has to confiscate his eyeliner often
He still ends up getting more
It’s waterproof now
When he gets it taken he lives in the digital world (new and improved) until she gets it back
The others have to force him to sleep
He’s a huge help when something goes missing or something happens
Detective work

i love korekiyo's character so much!!! What would you write differently 👀
same unpopular fav....! liking kiyo is thankless work but someone gotta do it. thank you for your interest!! let's see... spoilers for drv3 under the cut.
in my opinion, up to chapter 3 korekiyo's character was not handled particularly bad. there are several subtle hints to his backstory and involvement with his sister, remaining noticeable without giving off warning signs. and i think his free time events are delightful! so honestly i wouldn't even really wanna touch any of that. they establish korekiyo as a fairly eccentric, emotionally distant if non ill-intentioned person, who approaches human relationships like academic encounters.
now we get to chapter 3, and with his research lab opened he clearly hits an obsessive phase. the behavioural changes are very obvious, especially if you intend to spend free time with him (the re-occurring message of him going on and on about seances quite reminiscent of the message you get in game 1 when spending time with a completely shut-down taka). we obviously don’t know if that’s just the kind of state korekiyo got himself in with each of his murders (quite possible, with the ritualistic nature he considers them with) or if it is just his his wavering composure, but it starts cluing the viewer into the fact that kiyo is far from a mentally stable individual, despite his fairly good handling of the unique challenges of the killing game. and i still think that’s fairly good writing, showing the audience that something is off about kiyo instead of telling them.
now where i feel like we hit the wall is definitely with the trial and korekiyo’s subsequent execution. i think the idea of double murders - with only the first culprit being punished - leaves SUCH a fascinating chance for someone to stay in the game despite committing a murder. korekiyo killing tenko, but not angie, and thus continuing to be a part of the game would have been such an interesting direction for the plot and for future character dynamics. though knowing the cast v3 wants to put actual focus on, there was simply no way for kiyo to gain a bigger role than what he already has.
i do think though, development-wise, that kiyo’s arc is broken in half like a cracker, because we earn the twist of his identity as a serial killer, we learn about his sister, we see whatever he’s got going on, but his near immediate execution really puts an immediate stop to any potential development that could come from this. which, again, i find to be SUCH a shame because korekiyo is an extremely complex and extremely misunderstood character imo. he’s someone who’s learned all the wrong lessons and took all the wrong paths and there’s a lot you can build on that.
imo, for korekiyo to develop though, he would need a dose of ego death first, because his present personality is... very much a fabrication in more ways than one (something i also find fascinating!). through learning about kiyo the viewer finds that nearly nothing about him is truly his - his uniform is a memento of his sister, which he admits to finding too flashy; he kills in a misguided attempt to appease his sister who could never accept him as her friend; his interest in anthropology even, is something he took up after his sister. korekiyo does extremely little on his own accord without direct co-relation to his sister. he exists as a mirror image his sister left behind and let’s be honest...
whatever korekiyo and his sister had going on, was very very clearly abuse (it’s enough if you put the timeline of kiyo’s possible age together to get the yikes) and extremely traumatic, something that korekiyo's in-game arc only vaguely hints at. because he’s under layers and layers and layers of denial. i think for korekiyo to develop he’d have to come to terms with this fact, and all the hurt that would come with it - not to mention the kind of hit it would take on his identity, which again, is near completely modeled after his sister’s precieved wants and needs.
i just think keeping korekiyo around in an environment where he IS a confirmed murderer, while having him go through this crisis of taking himself apart and having to rebuild with near nothing with few allies would make for very interesting character dynamics and loyalties, in a version of the game where he’d have a more major role in the story. because kiyo is not a bad person, per se, but he’s extremely misguided with a LOT of past mistakes to own up to and re-contextualize, and a LOT of issues to address and treat. but i don’t think being abused by his sister and bending over backwards to wrap it into something positive is one of those.  i do have an au for this. i think about it a lot. but that goes in the realm of Making Stuff Up, of which i tried to keep from this post. i hope this made sense;;; :’] i have a lot of thoughts about kiyo and it’s hard to put em cohesively.

Grand Killing Game Masterlist
Tumblr media
Welcome to "The Grand Killing Game" this master list will have a few tidbits that aren't spoilers to the au, as well as a link to every comic page and written chapter.
The GKG contained only the 3 main games (THH, SDR2, and DRV3) because A) 55 characters is already a lot to keep track of. B) I'm not putting actual children into a Killing Game.
Junko has amnesia and is living as Ryoko (similar to Zero)
Imposter will be pretending to be Mitarai, but I do plan on revealing their real face at some point
Outfits will change throughout the comic, this will often be to represent if it's a different day (mostly so i can draw cut clothes)
Trigger Happy Havok Cast is still 78
Goodbye Despair is still 77-B
But Instead of Killing Harmony's cast being 79, I've made them 77-A
I don't plan on using too many killings from the games. However, I will use a few or do similar ones, that I need to for Plot reasons.
Same with character arcs, while I do plan on borrowing some from the games, I will also be taking a few creative liberties with it.

can you talk more about danganronpa 3 chapter 3… i’m very curious about your analysis on it and like, a slightly more detailed explanation of it bc i am deeply fascinated. only if it doesn’t bother you, of course
ohh anon u have No Idea what uve awakened in me .  Quick Side Note , i truthfully didnt know where 2 begin explaining ch3 So If it looks scattered i Apologize i am Trying. i have ay dee aych dee . also obv drv3 spoilers Ahead.
when it comes 2 ch3 thje Big Big Reason why i like it so much bc Come On im the tenmikoangie guy !!! thats their Focus Chapter !!!  but its also bc its just. different? from the other ch3 in other games ? while the past ch3s dont really have that much of a bond with eachother (as in the focus characters), in drv3 the focus characters are /deeply/ intertwined with eachother, including the killer to a degree. so much so, to the point that the ONE character who lived through losing Two of their Closest Friends, Grieved loudly on trial grounds, was able to start changing themselves so their deaths would not be in vain. Obviously it took more effort and trial and error on himiko’s part but hey, she’s trying!
also i feel like this is the chapter most people gloss over the most…? especially when talking about tenko’s and angie’s characters? this is where their personalities hit their peak!! most people tend to ignore the fact that tenko is a deeply caring and Very Emotionally tuned person  in favor of the more creepy narrative, and angie being someome who ALSO cares but because her decisions are more logic based, shows it in Extremely Weird ways. to the point where the people outside assumes she is manipulating people into her bidding ( while there IS the whole.. God thing, i say this because through her logical deductions, she realized that attempts of escape, accepting monokuma’s motives, flashback lights and nighttime stuff are probably factors in what will make somebody go for murders. she’s insanely smart and makes a very good foil to tenko, who may be Dumb sometimes but he is a good empath!!)
their interactions r also pretty funny thru the whole chapter. why are they talking after one another is beyond me but i remember just whimpering and crying everytime they all talk . something is wrong with me !!
ok aside from that tho bc of this chapter i genuinely do think that tenko, angie and himiko all do care for eachother  . tenko would not have gone out of his way to at least try to convince angie not to use the necronomicon !! angie couldve used the mole reveal to banish tenko from the council but she didnt !! and honestly we already know himiko's deal ( got closer to tenko during ch2 + was already closer to angie since liek . the beginning of ch2 ) . the point im trying to make is that they all had their reasons to just completely abandon ship and let the others to their own devices but they did NOT because to them their company or wellbeing is much more important! (actually angie not banishing tenko is probably bc her group is Moreso based on peace rathe thn fear BUT STILL !! she very much cares she just shows it weird . also she's lonely and tenko (aside from shuichi's fte) is like. the only other person who actively goes against her standing as a ''prophet''... Something She Herself  liked so. make that as you will)
as for korekiyos . . . actually someone explained it much better thn i ever could but theyre liek . parallels to himiko . more specifically just as angie's and tenko's core traits really start to shine in her .. only albeit it turned into their downfall as they flounder harder and harder into the trial . everyone is a parallel of eachotherrr in their own waaayy . ............................. Sighs ? i wish more ppl went into depth into drv3 ch3 more i feel like there's a lot of missing stuff in there tht even I feel like i dont have much info on . ( this culd be bc i hadnt replayed drv3 in a while but . Not Right Now )
IDK i think thts most of what i wanted to talk about theres Definitely some bits and stuff i wanted to talk about but to add them here would 1) make it longer and 2) make it even Less comphrensible bc the way i write is so scattered and made even worse with me having to pause every now and then to try to recall details. sooo if there's anything specific u want me to talk about Please do Ask LOOL

Okay okay, I’ve been reading Sleep Awake since about November now, and I am IN LOVE WITH IT. The characters are so accurate, and I feel like I love several characters more than I used to. You just made them so likable and even gave them well deserved attention! (Especially Rantaro). I also love how you include the reader and have things change because of them, so it’s not like they’re just there observing. Anyways, sorry, it’s just so amazing. TO THE POINT. Ive been wondering this for a while, why did you start writing it, and did you have any clue what you wanted to happen later in the story at the beginning? I’m not sure if you answered this, but I’m just super curious. Please take your time to answer this, and take care of yourself! (Help why was this so long I’m so sorry🧍)
sleep awake spoilers, drv3 spoilers
oh my gos no this is lovely!!! i rly do love receiving long messages like these they make my day!! i’m so glad ur enjoying sleep awake beloved :’)
as for why i decided to write it. genuinely the brainrot was just too strong. i had this idea of a reader insert participating in chapter 3 as a fix-it, because ch3 is my least favourite in the game and i was disappointed in the wasted potential of not having two killers. and i wanted a reader insert because that’s how my hyperfixations kind of manifest, it’s my main form of enjoyment when i begin to hyperfixate on something and consume content.
so there’s that. as for the other question. kind of? as i said, the whole story was borne out of getting to chapter 3 and messing stuff up. so i had in my head like major plot points, like the reader being accused of rantaro’s murder, kirumi betraying the reader, several kokichi scenes, and reader killing kiyo. but all the connecting tissue was made up as i went along. the relationships reader has w the other students were almost entirely unplanned - i knew i wanted them to be close to rantaro and for the locker trio to remain a close thing throughout, but i genuinely didn’t plan on making the reader so close w characters like tenko, kirumi and more recently maki. that just kind of transpired as the text went along and i’m pretty happy with it. in fact, i kind of wish i’d spent more time on the readers relationships with like, tsumugi and miu and himiko but, i guess they can’t be friends with everyone.
i also had a little list i wrote near the beginning of the story, maybe like two chapters in, of scenes i wanted to write at some point. most of them have occurred as of now, but it’s fun to look back and see how some of the original vision has changed.
Tumblr media
so, most of these have happened. flower crowns w gonta, the second one in the second interlude after the third trial, the third, fourth and fifth. the partially degraded danganronpa on readers collar was changed to ‘memory’ on their arm because i didn’t want them to use the memory flashback lights and at the end of the day i thought them having the word danganronpa on them wouldn’t effect the story, since obviously they wouldn’t remember what it was. the next three didn’t happen - the writing things on their skin was just a quirk i have that never made it in, the whiteboard thing just never made it in, same with the next one. anyway, just thought it was neat.
thank u for this question!! i had a lot of fun answering it, i love to ramble abt my little fic. thank u for sticking with it for so long!! i’ll see u with the update on the 25th (the one year anniversary!!!)

Panda’s full rewrite of DR1 with explanation because she has nothing better to do before DND:
Put under spoilers because it’s long + dangan ronpa cringe
1. Sayaka is the actual protag, but Naegi is the bait and switch death protag instead of Kaede.
- (From what we’ve been told), Sayaka is “supposed” to be a critique twist of how oversaturated mystery series were with a guy protag and a sweet innocent assistant girl. The problem is jumping immediately to “kill the girl character as a twist instead!” always blows chunks. (Also if she still planned to kill someone, that would be an interesting “no one trusts you” emotional dynamic)
2. Fuck ALL of chapter 2. Chihiro lives. She’s trans. Fukawa is a true crime enthusiast. Also trans. Togami’s the killer. Not trans.
-Was originally the worst chapter in the entire series before DRV3. Transphobic, pluralphobic, letting a spoiled rich kid get away with desecrating a body, and it barely makes any sense. It sucks across the board just. EW! Change all of it!
3. Maybe actually do something with Ishimaru freaking out so badly he basically gets an introject of his dead friend?
-What’s the point of giving him a radical design and personality change if he just. Dies the same chapter? There’s no story there. This is a series about extreme grief, I’d like to see more emphasis on characters attempting to cope with what’s happening.
4. Maybe Hagakure should actually... have a presence?
-I get the point of a more comic relief character, but uh... by the end of the game the cast is so slimmed down there’s less of a point to having one? A character designed to defuse a situation between 12 characters becomes a little too effective when it’s, like, 5 or 6.
5. Make Monokuma actually a robot.
-There should be more emphasis on the fact that Monokuma is meant to be representative of extreme capital punishment and enforcement, and it’s tie in to systematically forcing people to commit crimes. (Think about how Naegi said it wasn’t the first two people’s faults that they killed each other, but Monokuma’s for putting them in that situation. That should be the vibe the whole game.) Making him a literal AI makes it easier to connect as a literal system without lived morals applied to it. And it makes it harder to blame a single person, like...
6. Basically completely overhaul Junko Enoshima as a character, and don’t make her take the individualistic blame for a completely societal structural failing
-As she stands now, Junko is a character who’s basically blamed for the destruction of the entire world “because she’s mentally ill enough”. She swaps personalities every couple of lines. She says she doesn’t feel anything but “despair”. “Demonization” is putting it lightly. And the thing is: We don’t even want to get rid of her depression, her plurality, etc. etc. etc., we just think it’s counterproductive to put all the blame on a single person. Her sister’s a child soldier for god’s sake, the world’s already plenty messed up before she showed up! She doesn’t even have to be good, just acknowledge she’s probably just a teen coping incredibly poorly with the world ending.

Ask and you shall receive!
I saw the reblog on thelemoncoffee's post about the wheel of fate and I thought I'd pitch in to soothe your curiosity. You're welcome.
I don't know if you want the wheel of fates for THH and SDR2, so for now, voila! DRV3.
Chapter 1 Victim: Ryoma Hoshi, Ultimate Tennis Pro Chapter 1 Blackened: Kirumi Tojo, Ultimate Maid
Very in-character... because this already happened in canon. With the First Blood Perk too, that's a bonus. Makes me wonder if Kirumi's gonna be a more important character now that "she made it back to the outside world." (spoilers: she died). Maybe this case'll pop up again in Trial 6 or something to clue em in?
Chapter 2 Victim: Korekiyo Shinguji, Ultimate Anthropologist Chapter 2 Blackened: Gonta Gokuhara, Ultimate Entomologist
Now this... I'm assuming Gonta got his hands on Shinguji's motive video. What could possibly be part of his video, I have no clue. But I'm assuming it reveals the fact that he's a serial killer of women. Gonta goes Chapter 4 upon learning that. We all know how that ends.
Chapter 3 First Victim: Miu Iruma, Ultimate Inventor Chapter 3 Second Victim: Kaede Akamatsu, Ultimate Pianist Chapter 3 Blackened: Maki Harukawa, Ultimate "Child Caregiver" (Assassin)
OhoHO. With the motive being the Necronomicon, this is actually pretty fitting, given Maki was trained to be an assassin as a part of a cult that hid behind religion. This'll require some twisting of character, but perhaps Maki, instead of ignoring it, came to listen to the cult. She genuinely believes in the god the cult came up with, and thus things like the Necronomicon, making her a bit. Crazier than canon. Don't know who she wanted to raise from the dead and why or why she chose a double murder or why it was these two specifically though.
Chapter 4 Victim: Tenko Chabashira, Ultimate Aikido Master Chapter 4 Blackened: Kaito Momota, Ultimate Astronaut
Nekomaru vs Gundham vibes tbh. Since Angie's still alive, I can see her and Ouma being at odds with each other a lot. I say this because it's definitely connected, this is literally two of their biggest haters.
Chapter 5 Victim: Angie Yonaga, Ultimate Artist Chapter 5 Blackened: Himiko Yumeno, Ultimate Magician
Also because of this. The traffic lights trio get a hell of a lot more screen time here huh. I see people be disappointed that Angie never got character development, but it seems here she just went on a downward spiral. Himiko might've been dragged down with her unfortunately, acting as obsessive towards Angie the same way Tenko acts towards her, if not more, depending on how messed up you wanna take this. As a Yonameno shipper, ouch. But also Himiko as the Chapter 5 blackened imo is just chefs kiss and wow Angie really did take over Ouma's role as antag huh. Or maybe they're both main antags and we just have two.
Chapter 6 Mastermind: Shuichi Saihara, Ultimate Detective Chapter 6 Sacrifice: Tsumugi Shirogane, Ultimate Cosplayer
Ah yes. The classic mastermind that 95% of the DRV3 fandom wished for and never got. This is where shit gets real funky considering the amount of sheer AUs out there, but for the sake of simplicity let's just stick to the idea that this is a TV show and they all signed up for it among other stuff. Tsumugi as the sacrifice... well, if she and Rantaro had a good relationship throughout and she acted as his support, oh boy that's kinda depressing. But if she was like. The third rival (jfc so many ANTAGS in this game) cuz this is Tsumugi we're talking about, she definitely played traitor and just wants to get to the 54th killing game already.
Survivors: •K1-B0, Ultimate Robot •Kokichi Ouma, Ultimate Supreme Leader •Rantaro Amami, Ultimate ??? (Adventurer/Survivor)
This trio... ok so Ouma actually gets to face what he's done instead of dying. That's pretty nice. Kiibo survives like he was supposed to in canon goddammit. Amami'll finally reach his full potential, bless. As the Ultimate Survivor, I really do wonder whether he'll ever remember his past games or not... Who knows, maybe he was a graduate blackened in a past game and antag Tsumugi/Saihara spilled those beans to stir shit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And that's a wrap! I know I came out of nowhere, but I was ready to rant about this as much as you were begging to know more. I gladly took the chance. Try for the opportunity.
Oh wow, this is neat! For Maki’s chapter, maybe she targeted Miu due to personal dislike, but Kaede walked in on her with the body, so she had to kill her to keep her quiet?
(And I would actually like the THH and SDR2 wheels of fate, I was curious about those too.)

ooh okay now I'm curious: what don't you like about v3's ending?
Hhh I hope you won't regret asking this, because I am going to rant a looot about it XDD
SPOILERS for ALL danganronpa main games (also, long rant ahead)
The first thing that I want to say is that it makes me cringe. It makes me cringe so hard when the in-universe characters talk about the previous games and literally say danganronpa. It's too meta for my liking.
Additionally, it feels mean spirited to the player. Sorry, I can't get to the moral high ground here, I just don't like getting lectured for the things I like by the things I like. It's a bit hypocritical too, no? You were the one who made the murder mystery game, not me!
---
Having gotten those two points out of the way, it feels really silly as a reveal in comparison to the previous two games' reveals. The first one basically said that the world as the characters knew it had ended, and the second one not only said that, but it also revealed that they were the ones responsible.
In comparison, DRV3 has a very bizarre (also overused, also juvenile) "we live in a society" kind of reveal. "Ooooh look how uncaring all these people are!"
(also, seriously? who could watch 53 of these killing games without getting bored? that number is ridiculous)
It certainly tries to give it more of a punch with the inclusion of the characters' audition tapes (seeing that they signed up to be psychologically tortured and literally murdered on live TV) in an attempt to make it more like DR2 instead of just DR1, however that aspect is brushed aside in favour of dealing with the bigger issue (the actual murder show). It's so incredibly cartoony and weird, and not in a good way. Maybe if it were some kind of underground, dark web type of deal there would be a better flavour to it.
Also, there were sooo many red herrings in the previous chapters, instead of a slow buildup of the reveal. For comparison's sake:
In 2-2 the characters learn that they've lost their school memories, and, after that, Monokuma starts talking about the world ending on multiple occasions. In 2-3 we read a document about a reserve course that exists at hope's peak. We also learn about protests that were carried out by said reserve course. Then in 2-4 we get the payoff that Hajime is in the reserve course. Finally, in 2-6 we learn that all the people of this game were the instigators of the apocalipse. Hajime's personal struggle is only a small part of the bigger reveal, but it also supports the bigger narrative: the fact that Hope's Peak is an incredibly corrupt organisation that treats people as expendable labrats, and how that led to the protests, and how that helped Junko escalate the situation in a massive way.
Meanwhile, in V3 we get some flashbacks of Suichi talking with a random young kid, him talking with some classmates, him being chased by a mob of people. Then there's a whole thing about getting to the exit through the tunnel and hope's peak building a sanctuary for the last remains of humanity?? And let's not forget Kaede's sister, for whatever reason. I'll admit that I don't remember all the details of V3 because it's been a while since I played it, but all these events are so disjointed and random. There's just so many things shown that in the end don't have anything to do with the reveal (apart from showing how stupid the whole organisation running these killing games is).
Another thing to mention, is the existence of the nanokumas. The creators must have really liked the fact that Monokuma could see everything all the time in DR2, because they had to somehow make that work outside of a digital context in V3. I hate the nanokumas. They are so incredibly dumb as a concept.
And after all is said and done, the game has the gall to say "but who knows what the actual truth is"
Neither of the previous games had such an unecessary open-endedness to them. But ig I have to admit that, specifically with DR1's ending, there is a bias of certainty because we got multiple sequels that confirm what the truth is (although I still believe that it didn't really leave much room for debate).
Both games had a feeling of "and the story continues" but not a "wait, what was the truth after all?", if that makes sense.
---
Now, about Tsumugi specifically. It's really really dumb that she was made out out to be a big bad evil mastermind, when she's just a showrunner. She's got 0 actual power. Nothing like Junko or even Izuru. They were the instigators. Tsumugi is a small cog in a machine.
Idk if I've said this before, but I'd like her a lot better as a mastermind if she'd been some rich spoiled girl who's obsessed with the danganronpa franchise and ends up kidnapping a bunch of her classmates and brainwashes them in order to make her own real-life killing game. That to me, specifically for Tsumugi's character, would be 1000x or even 1000000x more compelling than her canon motivations and role. This way, you can even keep the meta-narrative of the previous games being fictional in the V3 universe, but can completely remove the entire world being in on the joke. AND it would make her more interesting because she'd be so passionate about this game that she's literally willing to die for it!
---
In conclusion: there's probably things I can't remember right now, but these are the main points that come to mind off the top of my head.
Don't get me wrong, I had a lot of fun playing it until the trial of chapter 5. It became too confusing and convoluted for me after that point. But before that, I liked seeing most of the character interactions.
I do feel bitter that Kaede was killed in the first chapter (it'd be a lot more interesting if Suichi had died and Kaede had then had to learn how to take on his role, there could even be a lesson that one does not need to keep themselves within the confines of their assigned ultimate talent), but it's not like the whole game suffers from this one decision.
I especially liked the interactions between Suichi, Maki, and Kaito during their nightly meetups. Such small moments of bonding time is something that was missing from the previous two games.

Spoilers for sdr2 and drv3
Ooooh chapter 4's murder in drv3 reminds me a lot of the murder in chapter 3 in sdr2! But that's only because the whole trial would have been so much better if mikan had forgotten why she had kiiled ibuki and hiyoko. It would have been similar to gonta's in this regard, BUT it would have the potential of being even more tragic because she would remember committing the murders, just not the why behind them. Oh what could have been... if only the developers didn't want to make her a suuuper crazy yandere last minute
also... wglfjglfa they played it well, naming the virtual world in drv3 neo world programme but making it NOT resemble it at all. I felt called out bc I was expecting something resembling the second game XD
