Look Ma, I'm at a Bonnaroo!
Tumblr media
The good people @dublab asked me to provide a mix for their Tonalism tent at @bonnaroo. One hour for me to bring you down with the best ambient/experimental/baroque jams I could find. Crazy to be included among colleagues like Brian Foote, the dublab massive, and heavy hitters like Loscil, Richard Chartier, KMRU, Patrick Shiroishi, and others I deeply respect. You can hear my contribution on dublab.com this coming Wed. 6/14 at 7am PST/ 8 am MST/ 9 am CST/ 10 am EST.
Tumblr media
If you can't listen then, no worries! My mix and that of the other contributors will be available on the dublab.com archives.

Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard On Dublab :: September 2022
Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard, every third Sunday on dublab. Up first on our four-hour broadcast, Chad DePasquale’s New Happy Gathering, drifting between the seasons with folk, country, ambient & rock. Then, Jason P. Woodbury takes over with Range and Basin, with comic book free jazz, avant-western and ecstatic gospels. Then, Tyler Wilcox pops in Doom and Gloom from the Tomb, with a bunch of solo acoustic Takoma School situations—mostly new-ish stuff, but some dips into the past. Then to close, Tom Scharpling of The Best Show presents The Best Drunk Aquarium Show. Tune in Sunday, September 18 from 4-8 PM PST on dublab.

An Audience with iconic punk publisher V. Vale hosted by Beatie Wolfe and Aaron Rose
An Audience with iconic punk publisher V. Vale hosted by Beatie Wolfe and Aaron Rose
April 16th, 2023 at 3pm (PT) at dublab, 1035 W 24th St, Los Angles, CA 90007
Come celebrate the life and work of one of this world’s true originals, San Francisco counterculture publisher and curator V. Vale, at dublab’s new HQ, hosted by artists Aaron Rose and Beatie Wolfe.
It’s rare to meet an artist who still embodies everything they stood for when they first began their mission. But that’s V. Vale: a writer, publisher, researcher, documenter, musician, and constant curator and contributor to the counterculture continuum. Described as the last 70s punk publisher, Vale is in perpetual motion, “a verb” in full evolutionary process.
After launching San Francisco’s first punk zine Search & Destroy in 1977 with $100 each from Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Vale founded RE/SEARCH in 1980 for his other cultural-anthropological explorations including Industrial music, the writings of J.G. Ballard and William S. Burroughs, feminism, plus “Incredibly Strange” filmmaking and music.
This event includes a conversation between Vale, Aaron Rose and Beatie Wolfe, a live DJ set from Money Mark on tape cassettes, cat haikus, a live performance from Vale and Marian and more.

Sports Night on WVKR - Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York, October 12, 1999
Back to the good old days! Or something? My friend Evan recently sent me a bunch of digitized tapes of our old WVKR radio show from around the turn of the century and listening to them has sent me down memory lane. A couple of kids in their early 20s learning about music, learning about life, learning about each other. Having a radio show was always a blast — though maybe more for the DJs than the listeners? Sometimes I sound fairly obnoxious, haha. Youth!
Anyway, I was having vaguely profound thoughts about the passage of time, but I'll spare you. Instead, listen to an hour of ridiculously eclectic college radio from the very late 1990s. Special guest appearance from our buddy Ben! What fun. What I wouldn't give to be back in the ol' WVKR studio.
And hey, speaking of radio, as I have mentioned, I do a monthly Dublab radio show with the fellas at Aquarium Drunkard. It's a good time! And Dublab is currently in the midst of its annual membership drive. Consider hopping on board to help 'em get to $25,000.

L.A. virginity lost
I was fortunate enough to take my first trip to Los Angeles last month to take part in a panel discussion at 2220 Arts & Archives. The amazing folks at dublab not only helped put it together, along with the awesome Steve Lowenthal of the Black Editions Group, but archived the discussion. And the amazing dj sets from Brian Foote, Hoseh & Laura Shumate. Click on the link above and soak it all in.

My sincere thanks to Mark “Frosty” McNeill of dublab for moderating, and panelists Anna Paz Lopez of Temporary Residence, Ryan Wilson from Light in the Attic, and my bestest pal Brian Foote of kranky and Peak Oil for sharing their insights.

Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard on dublab :: August 2022
Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard is floating in through the window every third Sunday on dublab. It’s late summer and we’re swimming in it. Up first on our four-hour broadcast, Chad DePasquale’s New Happy Gathering, with torrid August tides of psychedelic rock, post-punk & DIY pop. Then, Jason P. Woodbury takes over with Range and Basin, dropping synth minimalism alongside sophisti-pop and spiritual epics. Then, Tyler Wilcox pops in Doom and Gloom from the Tomb, offering a selection of sweet new sounds from 2022. To close, Jarrod Annis with Ephemeral Frequencies, a hazy hour of dubbed out zoners. Tune in Sunday, August 21 from 4-8 PM PST on dublab.

Yo La Tengo - Deeper Into Deep Cuts
In case I don't mention it enough here — I do a "radio" show on Dublab every month as part of the Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard rock block. Every third Sunday night of every damn month! It's always a good time — me, Chad DePasquale, Jason Woodbury and a revolving door of special guests. The archives are here for your listening pleasure.
For May, I put together an hour's worth of Yo La Tengo deep cuts — b-sides, outtakes, live cuts, guest appearances, film scores, rarities, rejected Coca-Cola jingles. Good stuff, obviously, and the whole thing has been added to the main Aquarium Drunkard site now. (However, you probably want to listen to the entire four-hour RFAD on Dublab, since this month's special guest is Prairiewolf/Heat Warps dude Jeremy Erwin, who put together a monstrous mix of 1973-74 Electric Miles, all taped from the bandstand.)
This isn't really the big Yo La Tengo news this week, however. The BIG news is that Ira Kaplan will be throwing out the first pitch at a Mets' game in a couple of days. Kaplan has done many cool things in his lifetime, but I can only imagine that this is some kind of dream come true for him. Say hi to Mr. Met for us, Ira!
