Thank you to @beansisarat7 for beta reading this chapter for me!
A/N: Here’s the second chapter! A quick little disclaimer, I’ve never actually been clubbing, so I’m sorry if this isn’t really right. That being said, I had a lot of fun writing this chapter, especially since I did it instead of doing homework, anyway, I hope you enjoy!

Chapter 2 // No cap, but go off I guess
After hanging out in the garage for a bit, Luke poofs us somewhere. The guys grunt a little, not used to poofing everywhere.
Reggie looks down at himself for a second, letting out a "Huh?"
We all look out below us onto a familiar street, watching people passing on the sidewalk in silence.
Luke breaks it, "Hey, I know being dead isn't our first choice, but I mean, it sure is easy getting around."
"It's like, super easy to get everywhere," I agree.
"Easy for you, maybe," Reggie says, "I lost my shirt on that one," he gestures to his bare torso. I let my eyes linger a little longer than they should've.
Then his shirt poofs back and I let out an almost inaudible, "aww." Based on the look Alex gave me it wasn't as quiet as I meant for it to be.
"Ooh never mind! There it is," Reggie says, happy his shirt is back and Luke chuckles.
Alex and I notice the sound of neon buzzing and look up to see a sign for the Orpheum.
"Okay, so, why'd you bring us here?" Alex asks, "Just another painful reminder of where we never got to play?"
"Yeah, thanks Luke, not cool," I back him up, Luke and Reggie look up to the sign before Luke brings his eyes back to Alex and I.
"I mean, dudes, the game isn't over yet," Luke says before poofing us down onto the pavement below and begins walking, "I'm telling you, we've been given a second chance. Let's find some music. Let's see how many clubs we can hit before sunrise."
"We're going clubbing! A'right!" I exclaim, getting excited and giving Luke a high five.
We keep walking for a second when we realize Alex isn't with us, we turn around, walking backwards, "Hey Alex, you coming?" Luke asks.
"Let's go!" Reggie yells to him.
"We're partying tonight!" I yell before poofing away the red and black striped sweater below my AC/DC graphic tee.
"So, where are we hitting first?" Alex asks, running to catch up to us.
"I, uh, I actually have no idea," Luke reveals.
"Okay, don't worry, I know a few places," I say confidently before remembering that they think I arrived at the same time as them, "If they're still here that is."
"Okay, tell us, where we heading first?" Reggie grins excitedly.
"We're gonna see if we can get into The Doe," I tell them, "It's about three blocks over," and with that I poof us to The Doe.
The boys look at the sign for the club, and then to the line to get in. If we were alive then we'd have to wait like an hour to get in, but since we're ghosts we can sneak in in two seconds.
"Come on!" I say, grabbing their arms and dragging them in.
There's some music playing, but it's not any 90s songs, nothing they'd find familiar. It takes me a second but I'm pretty sure it's that band named 5 Seconds of Summer or something, Billy's been trying to get me up to date with music and I've been doing fine so far.
"She looks so perfect standing there
In my American Apparel underwear,"
Yup, it's 5SOS, Billy would be proud.
"Wow," Reggie says, looking around at all the lights and people on the dancefloor.
"Yeah," I smile, "What d'you think? Is music different now?"
"Well, this is one song, but it's pretty good, no Sunset Curve though," he grins.
"Yeah, I agree. But it's pop rock, so it won't be as full on as Sunset Curve."
"Wanna dance?" he asks me, extending a hand for me to take.
'Fuck it,' I think, "Sure," I take his hand and we begin to dance. It's not really a song you can dance with a partner to, unless you're grinding I guess, but we make it work, dancing next to each other and he spins me every now and then which is fun.
When the song finishes we go to check out what Alex and Luke are doing. When we find them they're looking at the DJ's playlist, and they are skimming through the names trying to figure out which are rock bands and which they think would be best to listen to.
"Luke," I say, taking his arm, "Just let the DJ play her playlist. If you wanna hear the new music then just listen to it."
"But, Duchess, I wanna hear the competition. I wanna find out what rock bands are like now!" he protests.
"Please Luke?" I say, tugging on his arm again, "I'll dance with you?" I offer.
"Ugh, fine, only because I can't say no to a pretty girl that wants to dance."
"Sure you can't Patterson," I smirk, pulling him onto the dance floor as a slower song begins. It takes me a second until I recognize it as a song by the Vamps, Somebody to You.
"Look at me now, I'm falling
I can't even talk, still stuttering,"
We hold hands and dance, lip-synching to a song we don't even know, laughing when we clearly mess up. He spins me around a couple times, and I dip him at the end of one of the choruses making us burst into giggles. I'm really starting to like hanging out with the boys, they're great fun to be around.
The song ends and we hug, "So," I begin, "What did you think of that song?"
"Well, it's not rock, and it's definitely not Sunset Curve," I roll my eyes at these observations, "But it was good, I had fun dancing to it."
"See? Just because it's not rock doesn't mean it's trash," I laugh, and he rolls his eyes.
I turn to Reggie and Alex before taking a step towards Alex, "Well, since I've danced with these two morons, I guess I owe you a dance?"
I put my hand out for him to take and after looking to Reggie and Luke, who both nod at him, he looks back to me and takes my hand.
The song we dance to is Girls Like You by Maroon 5. It's a nice song, slower and a pop rock song that's more pop than rock. We both have a lot of fun doing turns and exaggeratedly pointing to each other for every,
"When I come through
I need a girl like you, yeah yeah,"
Alex is definitely a dancer, and a good one at that. We both have fun dancing more hip-hop when we get to Cardi's verse and we're laughing the entire time.
When the song ends we join the other two and they just look at us both wide eyed.
"What?" we ask.
"You two really like to dance," Reggie says.
"Yeah, guess Alex isn't the only dancer in the group now," Luke comments. Oh, if only you knew.
"So, next club?" I ask.
"Sure, where to next?" Reggie asks me.
I think for a bit before deciding, "How about we go to Okay?"
"Okay?" the boys chorus.
"Yeah, Okay, it's a club, you down?"
The boys exchange a look before shrugging, "Sure," Luke says, "Take us to Okay."
♪°•°∞°•°♪°•°∞°•°♪°•°∞°•°♪°•°∞°•°♪
I take the guys to Okay and we dance for a bit, Okay plays a few older songs from like the 2000s and the 90s, so we actually know the words to these songs. We're goofing about and dancing when Reggie and I bump into someone, we exchange a look before looking back at the person we bumped into.
The person has short green hair, a long sleeved black and white top and a black skirt with black suspenders seemingly holding it up, they look great.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry," they say before realizing what just happened. "Ghosts?"
"Yeah, we're ghosts, I'm Duchess," I tell them.
"And I'm Reggie," Reggie says, putting out his hand to shake theirs.
"Well, I'm Kai," Kai says, shaking Reggie's hand," And in case you were wondering I use they/them pronouns."
"They— th- what?" Reggie stammers, confused.
"Oh, uh, Kai, Reggie died in the 90s and only just left the dark room, he's still catching up," I explain to them.
"Oh, that's okay, I can explain if you want," Kai offers, and Reggie nods his head.
"When we refer to people we use pronouns, right?" Reggie nods again, "Well, instead of using he/him or she/her, I use they. Like what you would do if you didn't know if someone was a he or a she. Think of it like you found a wallet, you'd say 'oh, someone left their wallet here, I'll leave it so that they can find it,' do you follow?"
"Yeah, I do. Thanks for teaching me," Reggie smiles, still slightly embarrassed, "I use he/him pronouns, is that right?"
"Yeah, it is," I smile, "And I use she/her."
"Well, now that we're properly introduced, do you wanna come meet my friends?" Kai asks.
"Sure, can we go get our friends, Alex and Luke?" I ask.
"Sure, go ahead," Kai says, "We'll be over in the booth over there," they point to a booth in the corner of the club.
They walk to their both and Reggie and I scramble to find Alex and Luke. When we do we tell them we found other ghosts and Reggie explains to them Kai's pronouns, he seemed really proud to be educating them and it was honestly adorable.
We go over to the booth Kai pointed out to us and meet their friends, Mel, who died in 2017, is cis and uses she/her and Eli, who died in 2019, is trans and uses he/him. They're really cool people who told us a lot about newer music, and what it's like being a ghost. They also told us that they like to prank alive people even though they don't really know how to do much as ghosts.
"Just because you can't touch 'em doesn't mean you can't mess with 'em," Eli says with an evil grin.
"What do you mean?" Luke asks.
"Well, for instance, they can't feel your skin, but they can feel fabric and texture," Mel explains, "They can feel the wetness of water on your hand but not your hand. Ya get me?"
"Yeah, I get you."
"I know this is off topic but tbh I don't care, Luke, your fit is so 90s but like it's also fire," Eli compliments.
"Uhhhh," the guys sit with their mouths open, not knowing what to say, because they are not up to date with 2020 slang.
"Eli, dude, they're literally from the 90s," I laugh, "They highkey have no clue what you're saying."
"Oohhh, tea," Mel gasps.
"Yeah, they make knowing basic slang seem like a flex," I giggle.
"Cap, that's gotta be cap," Eli shakes his head.
"No cap, but go off I guess," I shrug.
"Damn, no need to be salty."
"I'm not salty, they're just himbos."
"They're himbos?" Mel asks, "You sure?"
"Well, yeah, but like they also create a himbo when combined. Luke is beefy, you see those arms? And Reggie is dumb of ass," I say before turning to Reggie, "said with love. And Alex is pure of heart. Ergo, they create himbo."
"Can't argue with that logic, but I'm shook, how do you understand what we're saying, and they don't?"
"Well, first off I died in 2005, second off, I've been here a little bit longer than they have, that's why I have the 200 IQ plays that they don't."
"Still don't know what you're saying," Reggie says.
"Stop messing with them," Kai scolds, "I'm sorry about them, I died in 2014 and spent a little while in the dark room, it took me a while to figure out what they were saying."
"It's fine," Alex says, "We just, uh, just have a lot to catch up on I guess."
"You do, but it's getting late and if we don't yeet ourselves back home then Angel is gonna kill us, again," Eli says.
"Bet!" Mel agrees.
"We gotta get going, is what they mean, but we'll see you around?" Kai asks.
"Of course," I say, "See ya."
"Bye guys," they all say.
"Bye," the guys reply before Kai, Eli, and Mel poof away.
"Shall we hit the next club?" I ask the guys and they nod. And so I take them to what will be our final club of the night, a place called Midnight.
I poof us there and the guys drag me to a table before all turning to me.
"What?" I question, confused.
"How the hell do you know all that stuff?" Luke interrogates me.
"Yeah, I thought you showed up same time as us," Alex adds on.
"And what's a himbo?" Reggie asks, the guys look at him, "What? It's a valid question!"
"Okay, well, I didn't appear into the afterlife with you," I elucidate, "I just became visible to Julie with you guys. I've been here for like a month and a half already."
"A month and a half? And you didn't think to tell us?!" Alex all but yells at me.
"Sorry! I was confused when I was brought to you and Julie and then I realized who you were, and then I found out Julie could see me! Sorry if I didn't spill my life story to you," I sass.
"Yeah, no that makes sense," Reggie agrees.
"Yeah, I mean it's not every day you meet your music idols," Luke says arrogantly.
"And it's definitely not every day you realize they're huge dorks either," I say, pushing Luke's shoulder gently and he laughs.
"Reggie did raise a good question earlier though," Luke says.
"Oh? And what is that?" I ask.
"What is a himbo?"
"Ah, no. You're not ready to learn that yet."
"What do you mean?" Alex questions.
"You're just not ready. Trust me on that. Now come on, do we wanna stay here or will I show you some new things in LA?"
"Let's stay here a bit," Luke suggests, and the boys agree.
"Okay, let's dance then," I say grabbing them to the dance floor. It's definitely different clubbing as a ghost, there's no eating or drinking and no mingling unless you meet other ghosts.
After a bit of dancing the music quiets down, it's still playing but if you sang into the mic onstage then you could drown it out. I look to Reggie and he smiles at me, I nod to the mic and he taps Luke's shoulder and points to the mic, we smile and go onstage.
I look at the DJ's playlist and find a song that would absolutely be fun to sing with the boys. It's a song by Green Day and so although it came out in 2004, they'll still know the band. Before I put it on, I explain to them that although yes, the song does have a slur in it, it was meant as a reclamation and beyond that we can just not sing it, we agreed on the latter. I hit play on the karaoke option and make sure the boys can see the lyrics.
And so we begin as any normal person would start a song, screaming at the top of our lungs,
"DON'T WANNA BE AN AMERICAN IDIOT
DON'T WANT A NATION UNDER THE NEW MANIA,"
Singing with the boys was so much fun, honestly, I want to sing with them again for sure! People are confused when we finish because no one was up on the stage and we don't exactly sound like Green Day, but they enjoyed it, nonetheless.
♪°•°∞°•°♪°•°∞°•°♪°•°∞°•°♪°•°∞°•°♪
After staying in the club for a while the boys decided that they did want me to take them around the city. I show them all the new venues and places where bands play gigs, I show them what places shut down and what's there in their place.
The guys immediately stopped the tour when I revealed that I learned a couple ghosting tricks from my ghost friend. They really wanted to see what I could do, I can't really do much, but I showed them regardless. I lifted a couple things and set off a couple car alarms but I couldn't do much other than that. The guys found it really cool though, I gotta introduce them to Billy at some point.
The sun starts to rise and we decide that we need to start getting back to the Molina house, the boys want to wander for a bit longer, but I decide to go back to go check on Carlos, he's gotta be a little confused, especially after seeing Julie see me last night.
I poof to the door outside his room and knock quietly before hearing Carlos saying, "Come in."
"Hey Carlito," I smile after walking through the door.
"Hey Dee," he smiles, sitting on his bed, "What's up?"
"I just thought you'd want to know what's going on. Ya know, because of last night."
"Oh, yeah, could Julie see you?"
"Yeah, she, uh, she can."
"She can see you? How?!"
"Well, it's a long story, and I'm not 100% sure how she can see me either, but she can," I then whisper to myself, "I really don't understand why she can see the others and you can't though."
"What?" he asks.
"Oh, nothing. So, what's new, what are you gonna do today?" I deflect.
"Since we're moving, I have to pack my room, which means cleaning under my bed, and we both know that I don't wanna clean under my bed," the boy says, shaking his head.
"Hey!" I say, offended, "You found my demo under your bed!"
"Yeah, and who knows, I might find more demos and summon more demon ghosts!"
"I'm not a demon!" I protest, "I'm a ghost! A normal ghost, just tryna get through the afterlife."
"That's fair, well, I gotta get ready for school, but I'll see you after?"
"Yeah, of course Calo," I assure him, "I'll see you later."
"Bye DeeDee."
And with that I poof to the guys, they were still wandering around LA and when I show up we all decide to go back to the studio.
We all poof into the back of the studio and we hear Julie singing and playing the piano. This is surprising to the boys because she told them that she doesn't play, and it's surprising for me because I know that she hasn't played since her mom died, so it's a little crazy for all of us.
"Wake up your dream and make it true Look out, look inside of you When you feel lost Relight that spark, time to come out of the dark Wake up, mm-mm, wake up"
We all look at each other in awe of Julie. This girl has an incredible voice and she plays the piano amazingly, honestly I'm glad she's playing again, depriving the world of her talent is almost criminal!
When she's done, Julie lifts the last sheet of music off the piano reading the note that her mom left at the bottom of it before hugging it and crying softly.

Prologue // The Ballerina Necklace
June 25, 2005, The Orpheum
"Come on! One, two, three!" Marisa yells, hitting her drumsticks together before we begin the soundcheck.
Danielle begins strumming her guitar and we start singing.
"Can't count the years on one hand that we've been together I need the other one to hold you Make you feel, make you feel better It's not a walk in the park to love each other But when our fingers interlock, can't deny, can't deny, you're the worth it
Some things just, some things just make sense And one of those is you and I Some things just, some things just make sense And even after all this time
I'm into you Baby not a day goes by that I'm not into you
I should be over all the butterflies but I'm into you, I'm into you And even baby our worst nights I'm into you, I'm into you Let 'em wonder how we got this far, 'Cause I don't really need to wonder at all Yeah after all this time I'm still into you I'm still into you I'm still into you."
We finish and Danielle runs over to my mic, "We're Moonrise Edge!"
"Tell your friends!" I chime in with a smile and pick up my keytar from the song before Still Into You. We're all smiling and can't wait for tonight, tonight we're the opening act in the Orpheum, I KNOW, how amazing is that?!
"We KILLED that sound check! It was amazing!" Marisa says after giving me a quick kiss.
"Yeah, too bad it was only a soundcheck. Tonight is gonna be amazing though, it's gonna be PACKED with people and we're definitely gonna get signed by a label if we perform like that," Dani brags.
"For sure! Then we're gonna sell a bunch of albums and get a tour!" I begin adding onto the fantasy we're gonna live after we perform tonight.
"Wow, you guys were great," a voice says, and we turn, who is it but rock god TREVOR WILSON.
While I'm too busy freaking out internally Marisa is completely calm, "Thanks dude, we can't wait to open for you tonight."
"It is gonna be awesome," Dani grins.
"Oh! We didn't introduce ourselves, I'm Marisa, this is Danielle, or Dani," she says pointing to the dark-skinned girl, "And finally this is Duchess or Doll," the Hispanic girl points to me.
"Well I think you're definitely gonna go far," Trevor compliments, "What got you guys into music?"
"Thanks," I finally find my voice, "We were always kinda into music but then we heard of this old band that was kinda big like, I don't know, ten years ago? It was called Sunset Curve, some of them died from like food poisoning or something. Anyway, we heard their demo and loved it so much that we wanted to become a band."
"Yeah, that's why we chose the name 'Moonrise Edge' because of 'Sunset Curve' it was supposed to be a bit like a joke but then we started getting gig so it kinda stuck," Marisa adds on.
"Oh, okay, well I gotta go do my soundcheck," Trevor says hurriedly, seeming to get really nervous.
"Okay, see you later," Dani yells after him.
"That was weird," Marisa says.
"Yeah, it was. I wonder what it was all about," I say before putting my hand in the pocket of my leather jacket, feeling around.
"He's famous, famous people are always weird and doing weird stuff," Dani rationalizes, when I feel nothing in my pockets, I begin patting down my red flannel skirt.
"Whatever, let's just get back to our dressing room," Marisa suggests, then she turns to me, "What is with you? What are you looking for?"
"I can't find my necklace," I say, fumbling in my bag, "Where is it?"
"Why do you even need your necklace?" Dani says, "I know it's your lucky charm, but we just played that soundcheck and crushed it, meaning you don't need it to play well."
"I know, I know, it's just that I've had the necklace for each of our gigs and we always crushed it. Soundchecks don't matter, the gigs do, so it's the same with the necklace," I explain, I've had the necklace with me for each milestone of the band. When we heard Sunset Curve's demo, when we formed Moonrise Edge, when we got our first gig and finally when we were asked to play the Orpheum.
"Look, it might be in the dressing room, let's check, yeah?" Marisa says helpfully.
"Okay, yeah, let's check," I say, and we enter the dressing room. We search and we search, and we search, and the necklace is nowhere to be found.
"Wait, I think I remember where it is!" Dani yells suddenly.
"Where? Where?" I ask worriedly.
"Do you remember when we were at Mari's and we were getting changed?"
"Yeah," I say, "Get to the point!"
"It fell off in Mari's room. I told you when we were leaving, and I thought you got it because you were the last to leave. You mustn't have heard me," Dani sighs.
"Oh damn!" I facepalm, "What time is it?"
"Right now it is 6:17pm," Marisa looks at the clock.
"Okay, it's a ten-minute drive each way, just drive to mine and you'll be back with plenty of time to perform," Marisa says calmly, trying to soothe my nerves.
"Okay, okay, I'll go get it, Dani do you mind if I take your car?" I ask, while grabbing my bag.
"Sure, think fast," she says, throwing me her keys.
I catch them and begin running out the door, "I'll be right back!"
"See you, I love you, Doll," Marisa shouts.
"I love you too Mari!"
I get into Dani's car and turn the key, I reverse out of the parking spot and get out onto the road. I take the right turn and stop at the red light. I go ahead when the light turns green but suddenly, I'm going sideways, I feel a pain in my side then all I can see is black.
♪°•°∞°•°♪°•°∞°•°♪°•°∞°•°♪°•°∞°•°♪
July 15, 2020
I've been in this dark room for like forty-five minutes now. It's pretty boring. Basically what happened was that when I began driving again after the light turned green some asshole decided not to stop for HIS red light and he hit into me. The car turned sideways and smashed into a building, I was dead before the car stopped moving. Then I floated out of the car, I knew I was dead, and I was transported to this weird dark room. And here I am.
I start to hear music, then I realize it's Still Into You from the Moonrise Edge demo, then the music is distorted, and the ground of the dark room seems to dissolve.
I scream a little as I fall on my back. I then stand up and look around, I'm in someone's room. Then I hear the voice of a little boy.
"Who are you?" I turn around and see a Latino boy about ten or eleven with his jaw dropped.
"I- uh, I'm Duchess, who are you?" I stutter out.
"I'm Carlos, what are you doing in my room?"
"I actually have no idea," I tell him, "Last thing I remember is dying and then being in this dark room with nothing in it."
"You're dead?!" he exclaims.
"Yeah, wait, you're not? Where even am I?" I'm getting really confused now.
"You're in my room," he repeats from before, "In Los Feliz. How did you die?"
"I- Los Feliz? Wait, that where Mari lives," I realize, trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
"Who's Mari?" Carlos asks.
"Mari's my girlfriend, the drummer in my band," I overexplain to him for some reason.
"You're in a band? Cool! What's it called?"
"Moonrise Edge, we were supposed to play the Orpheum last night," I say, running my hand through my dark hair, "Wait, I wonder what they did, since I died and everything. Do you know what they did?"
"No, but I can look it up if you want," he says.
"Sure," I say.
"I'll be right back," he says before leaving the room. I walk around the room, looking at a baseball bat in the corner and a jersey lying on the bed with the number 7 on it.
Then Carlos comes rushing back into the room with some kind of device in his hand, "Okay, I've got my iPad, now what was the band called again?"
"Uh, Moonrise Edge," I say, suspicious of this 'iPad' device.
"Wow, you were in a band, and you did die, but not last night," he says, after typing on the device.
"What do you mean not last night?" I say, super confused at this point.
"You died in 2005, right?"
"Yes..."
"Well it's not 2005 anymore," he says carefully.
"What do you mean it's not 2005 anymore? I was only in that dark room for like forty-five minutes!"
"It's now 2020, you died fifteen years ago," he explains.
"WHAT!? IT'S BEEN FIFTEEN YEARS! I SPENT FIFTEEN YEARS IN SOLITUDE!?" I exclaim.
"Okay, uh, calm down, it's okay. It's okay, look, you're not alone anymore, you've got me. I'll help you with anything you need," Carlos tries to comfort me.
"But-but it wasn't that long, how has it been fifteen years?" I question.
"That, I don't know. All I know is that I'm here to keep you company, if you want. I can help you find out what happened to your bandmates, you parents or whatever and I'll get you up to speed on what you missed."
"You'd do that for me? Why?"
"Because, ghosts are pretty cool," he says simply.
"Okay aha, can we start with what happened to my bandmates?" I ask him.
"Yeah sure," he sits on his bed and ushers me to sit next to him.
"This," he points to the device in his hand, "is an iPad, it's like a computer but it's just the screen and it has a touchscreen, you use it like this," he explains, swiping his finger along the surface.
He then explains to me how to search things on it and looks up what happened to Dani and Marisa. Apparently, they went on and played the Orpheum gig without me, which I'm not mad about I mean they worked as hard as I did to get there, they deserved to play the gig. After playing they split up the band after that, believed to have done it out of respect for me, and became solo acts. Mari got signed to a label and was asked to join a band named 4 Orchids they've done a few tours and now she's living somewhere in New York. Dani went on to become a solo act and was also signed onto a label, she's done tours and collaborations and now she's living in San Francisco.
Carlos told me that if I wanted to stay in the garage behind his house. He told me that it was his mom's studio but ever since she sadly passed away last year no one's went into it. I thanked him and told him I was gonna stick around.
Then I decided to go and explore the streets of Los Angeles, see how things have changed since I died. I got to meet some cool celebrities that are dead, but I didn't make any friends today. I got to see Marilyn Monroe, gotta say, she's as hot in person as she was on film.
Before I go back to Carlos's house, I go to the house that Mari used to live in, which turns out to be next door to Carlos's. She doesn't live there anymore, but her parents do.
I walk in the hall and see the photos of Mari growing up, a couple pictures of her now and a picture of Mari, Dani and I before our first gig when we were 15. Then when I go into the living room where I see Mari's parents, Lydia and Victor, are watching something on TV. I see more picture of Mari with her parents, some with Mari and me, one of our unofficial pictures from prom, some with Mari and Dani and some with Mari and her cousins.
I go up the stairs and see Mari's bed is more or less the same as it was when I was still alive. When I go to her desk, I see my necklace lying there with a sticky note, 'Doll's necklace' is what's written. I lift my necklace and inspect the charm, the ballerina dangling from the chain. I take it and clasp it around my neck before leaving to go to Carlos's garage.
I explore Carlos's mom's studio and it's kinda cool. Up in the loft there are drums and a couple guitars, and also a bag of clothes, I don't know who owns the clothes so I'm not gonna take them. I check out the couch and it seems pretty comfortable, I lay down on it and try to go to sleep. After a few hours I realize that I don't actually need sleep, but it's an easy way to pass time.

Chapter One // Holy Shit! You’re Sunset Curve!
I've been here about two months now and I've grown familiar with the Molinas, even though only Carlos can see me. Carlos has a sister named Julie. From what I've gathered Julie is in the music program at her school, but she hasn't played or sang since her mom died, I feel really bad for her and I wish I could help. Carlos and Julie's dad is called Ray and he is an amazing father, always willing to help his children in any way he can, he has a kind heart and although he doesn't even know I exist he's kind of unknowingly adopted me.
Carlos has taken to calling me Dee or DeeDee and whenever Ray or Julie ask him who Dee is, he just says a friend from school. I call him Calo or Carlito in response and he seems to like the nickname.
I've also managed to make a ghost friend. Billy is lots of fun, he's helped me get up to speed with a lot of pop culture and slang and stuff. Also while he's a daredevil he's also a bit of a dork, he's really made the transition to ghost life a lot easier and a lot more fun.
I was walking down to the garage when I hear a song I haven't heard in a while, Now or Never by Sunset Curve, and then suddenly I'm falling again just like I was when I left the dark room. When I open my eyes, I see that I'm in the studio, and that I'm not alone. I hear groans from next to me and there are three guys there, we all begin to pick ourselves up and I look at them, they seem familiar.
They all let out a couple 'Whoa's as they stand up, then one of the guys looks around and raises a hand, "How did we get back here?"
Then Julie looks right at us and starts screaming and pointing, which makes the boys scream and jump, which makes me scream. What can I say? I like being included. Julie runs out of the studio and the guys turn to me with questioning looks on their faces.
"Who are you?" the blonde one asks.
"I'm Duchess, wait- you can see me?" I ask.
"Yeah, wait- you can see us?" the brunette retorts.
"Yeah, ghosts?" I question.
"Ghosts," the black haired one replies.
"I'm sorry, you said your name was Duchess?" the blonde one asks for confirmation and I nod, "I'm Alex."
"Nice to meet you Alex, and you two are..." I trail off, looking to the other two.
"I'm Reggie," the black haired one responds with a goofy smile.
"And I'm Luke," the brunette says, putting his hand out for a handshake which I oblige to.
"Wait a minute," I say, snapping my fingers, "You three look familiar, but I can't quite place it."
"Oh! We're in a band," Luke says, with a golden retriever smile, "Sun-"
"Holy Shit! You're Sunset Curve!" I exclaim.
"She knows us," Reggie says looking at the other two proudly.
"Well, yeah! You guys are awesome!" I say.
Then we hear footsteps and I grab them, "She's coming back, let's hide!"
Julie then walks into the studio cautiously holding a cross out in front of her and scanning the area.
"Are you still here...whatever you are?" she asks, still scanning the garage. She walks to the piano and drops her hands to her sides, "I know I saw something. I'm not crazy."
This prompts the boys and I to poof behind her.
"Well we're all a little crazy," Luke says with a grin, causing Julie to throw the cross in front of her again, screaming.
"Oh my god! Please stop screaming!" Alex pleads with her and she obeys.
"Who are you, and what are you doing in my mom's studio?" she demands, quite fairly, I mean how would you react if three dudes and a gal just showed up while you were listening to music?
"Your mom's studio?" Luke questions, walking towards Julie and she shoves her cross in front of him, causing him to raise his arms in surrender, "This is our studio," Luke says cockily, which does NOT check out.
He begins circling around her, shifting across the piano as she chases him with the cross, "Trust me, my... The grand piano is new, and... and... and..." ," he stammers, getting off the piano as Julie shoves the cross in the rest of our faces.
He then screams, "My couch!" through some giggles before throwing himself onto the couch I've been sleeping on for the last couple of months. He sighs happily before looking at a guitar beside the couch, "That is definitely not my six-string."
He sits on the couch for a second, looking really confused before looking around the studio and at the ceiling. He then walks over the coffee table asking, "Can you give me just one second?" while Julie still shoves the cross in his face, causing him to stammer and back up to the boys and I, "Just...give me a second. Thank you."
He then brings the guys into a huddle, which I decide to stay out of. I instead walk over to Julie who, surprise, shoves the cross in my face.
"I come in peace and mean no harm," I say, raising my arms in surrender. "I don't know these guys so I'm just gonna stay out of their huddle, is that okay?" I ask, Julie just shrugs her shoulders but keeps her cross in front of her keeping me at arms-length.
The guys whisper in their huddle for a few moments and while I don't hear much, I think they called Julie a witch. I mean, I don't know much about witches, I think Wiccans are pretty cool, but I don't think they hold crosses, I think that's kinda the opposite of witches, but whatever.
Julie and I share a look and then we here Alex say "Ok, let someone," he puts his hand on his chest, "with a softer touch handle this."
Alex then proceeds to walk a couple feet from the others and look at Julie and I, then he yells, "Why are you in our studio?"
Wow, so much for a softer touch.
Julie gives him a look before stepping forward and pushing her cross through him, she pulls it out and looks at it, "Oh my gosh! How did you do that?" she demands.
I step closer to the boys and Alex looks a little fed up, "Clearly, you're not understanding," he turns to us, "She doesn't get it. Okay, look. We're ghosts, all right? We're just four ghosts, and three of us are really happy to be home. So, thank you for the flowers. They really brighten up the room," he says sarcastically before stepping back to the rest of us.
Luke then pipes up, "We're in a band called Sunset Curve."
Reggie chimes in, "Tell your friends," and I smile, thinking of how I used to say that.
"Oh, them, not me, I'm not with them," I stammer, realizing Julie might've thought I was.
"Last night was supposed to be a really big night for us. It was gonna change our lives," Luke says seriously. It confuses me because they died like ten years before me, wait- they were probably in the dark room even longer than I was. Shit, how am I gonna break it to them?
Alex leans into Luke and kinda whispers, "I'm, uh...I'm pretty sure it did."
Julie shakes her head, lowers the cross and takes out her phone, "This is freaking me out," then she holds the cross in front of us again.
Luke is the first to question the device in her hand, "What is that? What are you doing?"
"It's my phone," Julie deadpans, before smiling to herself, "No! Stop talking to them. They aren't real. There's no such thing as cute ghosts."
Reggie smirks at this, "Oh, think we're cute?" making Julie give him a look, they seem to be earning a lot of these Look™'s so they do.
Julie begins tapping on her phone and Alex seems interested, "Who ya callin'?"
"I'm Googling Sunset Swerve," she looks at us.
"Sunset Curve," we all correct her, Reggie and I even drawing curves in the air.
Julie looks back to her phone and reads what it says, "Whoa, there is a Sunset Curve. You did die. But not last night."
The boys all look confused and I know now that this is the moment of truth, even Julie looks confused as she tells them, "Twenty-five years ago?"
Reggie is the first to object, "What? No. No, no, no. Th-th- that's impossible. After we floated out of the ambulance, all we did was go to that weird, dark room where Alex cried."
It seems like Alex didn't appreciate the call out and so he begins to protest. In a very high-pitched voice, "Well...I don't think...I think we were all pretty upset. Okay."
"But that was just like for an hour," Luke says, looking to Julie again, "we just showed up here."
Julie shows us her phone, "Look. I'm just telling you what my phone says," and the boys all lean in to see the writing, "See? You died in 1995. When you were 17. It's now 2020," she reveals.
The realization on their faces is almost heart breaking, Reggie being the first to speak, "So, this is the future?"
Julie rolls her eyes and takes back her phone. Alex then seems to go into panic mode, "Wait. So... So, it has been 25 years? I have been crying for 25 years? How is that possible?!"
"Well, you're a very emotional person," Reggie immediately rationalizes.
"I am not!" Alex protests, emotionally.
"Wait, what about you? Sunset Curve was a boy band," Julie turns to me.
"Oh, I was in a different band," I begin, "Called Moonrise Edge. We were kinda big locally in 2005, we started because of Sunset Curve, actually."
The grins on the boys' faces were enormous as I continue, "I was also gonna have a big gig before I died."
Then Carlos walks into the garage and I hold my finger to my lips when he sees me. He talks to Julie, "Thought you were afraid to come out here."
The boys part for Carlos to have an unobstructed path to Julie. He smiles crossing his arms as he asks, "You talking to your ghost friend? How does he look? Is he hideous?"
I giggle at the questions, I know that was half his intention, so I let him have this one.
Alex moves and looks at Reggie, "He can see you," I snort at the accusation.
Julie, being a dumbass, looks to Alex and says, "No, he can't."
Carlos looks around him and I cover my mouth, trying not to let it slip he can see me, "What?" he asks.
Julie just shakes her head lightly and tries to change the topic, "Uh...what do you want?"
"A normal sister, for starters," I had to bite my lip so that I didn't laugh at that one, "Stop being weird and come eat," I wink at him and he nods his head so discreetly I almost missed it, then he leaves.
We all turn to Julie and you can almost hear the cogs turning in her head.
"He couldn't see you," she states dumbly. I'm gonna let the boys handle this one, lying to your new friend isn't the best way to start a friendship.
"Yeah. I mean, that's..." Alex trails off, "usually how ghosts work."
Julie sighs and walks to the entrance of the garage.
"Look, I'm very sorry for what happened to you all, but this isn't your studio anymore. You have to leave," she lays down the law. This is gonna make it very awkward for me, I've been staying here these past few months, I can't just up and leave, I've got nowhere to go. Julie begins to leave but then Luke stops her.
"But wait. We..." he trails off as she turns around, "We didn't get your name."
"It's Julie," she states simply.
"Cool," he chuckles, "I-I'm Luke-"
He cuts himself off as Julie brings back the cross of doom, "by...by the way. And this is," he waves his hand and Reggie takes over.
"Reggie. I'm Reggie," he smiles, "Hey."
Luke then points to Alex, "And..."
"Alex. How's it going?" the blonde boy asks.
"And finally," Luke points to me.
"Oh! I'm, uh, I'm Duchess," I stutter, not expecting to be included in their little intro thing.
Luke then shows us off with his hands, softly saying, "Ba-da."
Julie eyes us all before shrugging, "Okay?" and walking off.
We all look at each other and Reggie breaks the silence with a goofy smile, "Julie seems nice."
"Did you miss the part where she kicked us out or..?" Alex asks rhetorically and when Reggie looks stunned, he just sighs, "Yes. Okay."
They then all look at me expectantly, "What? Why are you looking at me?" I ask.
"Moonrise Edge, huh?" Luke smiles that golden retriever smile.
"Yeah," I say shyly, "My cousin's friend showed me your demo and I fell in love with it, so I showed my friends Dani and Mari and together we formed Moonrise Edge. The name was a joke at first but it kinda stuck."
"Well, I think that's adorable," Luke says with a shit-eating grin.
"Shut up," I say, playfully punching his arm.
"So, how good were you guys?" Alex asks.
"We were alright I guess, good enough to be asked to be the opening act for the Orpheum," I say nonchalantly.
"The Orpheum? Dude that's rad! How did it go?" Luke questions me.
"I... I wish I could tell you, I actually died before I got to play," I sigh, tugging on my red and black striped sleeves.
"Oh, sorry, we are so sorry," Alex apologizes immediately.
"Yeah, dude, we had no idea," Luke says sincerely, "Wait, you're alright with me calling you dude, right?"
"Yeah, call me dude, bro, whatever you want, man," I say, glad to have more friends now. As much as I love Carlos, he's still a kid and he has school and all, and he's living! So it's fun to have dead friends.
"You okay there Reg?" Alex asks the bassist, "You're a little quiet."
"She's just really pretty," Reggie mumbles and I feel myself blush.
"Thank you Reggie," I look down at my red converse, "You're not so bad yourself."
"Hey, wanna go see what Julie's doing?" Luke begins bouncing on his toes.
"Sure, lead the way," I say, grabbing Reggie as we follow Luke.
"She said she was going to ea- Aw, whatever, they're already halfway there," Alex sighs before following us.
We walk through the door, Alex, then Luke, then me and then Reggie behind me, who trips before standing up straight. I then turn and see Tía Victoria is here, which can only mean that she's here trying to help the Molinas but is secretly kind of annoying them instead.
"You've gotta rip that band-aid off and get the pain over with," Victoria says, it becomes clear to me that she's talking about them moving to a new house.
We all walk over to the table and Julie yells, I put my fingers to my lips signaling her to shut it, and we all stop suddenly. Julie realizes her mistake as Victoria and Ray give her strange looks. Carlos looks to me and I just mime zipping my mouth, so he does.
"That's me. Ripping off the band-aid," Julie chuckles awkwardly trying to hide her mistake, "Aah!"
Carlos points to her, helping her hide her slip up.
"There's my brave girl," Victoria says, holding Julie by her chin before turning away.
Luke takes this as an opportunity to talk to Julie.
"Hey, Julie, I really like what you guys did with the place," he says, standing close to her.
Julie slips up again by sternly telling Luke, "You shouldn't be here."
Victoria gasps and assures her, "Oh, I'm just here to help, mija."
Julie looks around worriedly and Alex pulls Luke back, "I think that's our cue to leave."
"I mean, you should be at Pilates," Julie corrects her previous statement, hugging her aunt, "Thanks for bringing us food."
She gives us a Look™ and Reggie turns to us, "We should've called first."
"No doy!" I say, grabbing his and Luke's arms and begin dragging them out.
"Hey! You pulled me here!" Reggie protest.
"Shhh, doesn't matter," I say, putting a finger to his lips and he shuts up.
We get back to the studio and Luke sees a piece of paper on the piano.
"What's this?" he asks, reading over it.
"It looks like a song," Reggie says, reading it over Luke's shoulder.
"It's really good," I say, also reading it.
Then I remember something, "Hey, did you guys leave your stuff here, because there are some old instruments in the loft."
"Yeah! Thanks Duchess!" Luke says.
"No problem, here, I'll help you get them down!" I say, poofing up to the loft and slowly bringing down Alex's drums, the others can get their guitars no problem. After they get their stuff down they admire it all.
"Want us to play something for ya? A little private Sunset Curve concert?" Reggie asks.
"Sure, if you guys don't mind," I say, sitting on Luke's couch.
They count off and then start playing, they sound great and it's pretty fun to see Reggie and Luke hopping around when they're playing guitar.
Then Julie walks in and my eyes widen, she does not look happy. She stomps her feet and starts yelling.
"Guys! Guys, stop! Enough! Stop! Cut it out!"
Luke is the first to notice but instead of stopping he starts riffing. Reggie realizes next and immediately stops playing, then Alex realizes and while stopping he does a little ba dum, and smiles. I get off the couch and walk over to the guys as Julie folds her arms and begins scolding us like children.
"The whole neighborhood could hear you. I thought I told you to leave."
Instead of taking on board the scolding we all think of something else, Luke is the first to say it though, "Wait. People can hear us play?"
"Yes! And so did my dad and my brother!" Julie rants, furiously.
Alex stands up and Luke and Reggie remove their guitar straps. Alex is next to speak, "W-w-wait. Wait. So, only you can see us, but everyone can hear us?" he sounds super excited and it's adorable.
"I mean, what kind of ghosts are we?" he asks.
"Who cares, man? People can hear us play!" Luke is super stoked about this fact, bumping fists with the rest of us ghosts.
"We might be dead, but our music isn't" Reggie smiles proudly, bumping fists with Alex and me.
"Wait? Can people hear me play?" I raise an eyebrow and they look to me.
"I don't know, maybe?" Luke says, handing me his guitar, "Let's find out!"
I begin with a small riff and then Ray walks through the garage door, and I take off the guitar and set it down. "I think so," I whispered.
"Dad!" Julie looks to him.
"Hey," he responds, and we all look to him, "Just making sure you're okay."
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just had to turn off the CD player. It was a bit delayed, you know, because it's old," she lies.
Ray turns and looks at us ghosts, well, at our instruments, he can't actually see us. "Wait. Is this the junk that was in the loft?" he asks, and honestly I'm offended on the guys' behalf.
"Junk?" Luke says, not happy with the description of the band's equipment.
Ray moves over to Alex's drums and taps them with his hands, Alex does not seem happy about this, this doesn't faze Ray though.
"Some of this stuff's in pretty good shape," he comments, putting his foot on the pedal and circling his hands on the cymbals a couple times, "Hey, maybe we can make a couple bucks."
This is the last straw for Alex, "What? Yo, stop touching my drums! Tell him to stop touching my drums!"
We all kinda look to Julie, because come on man, this is Alex's stuff, but Julie just shrugs her shoulders. When Ray finally steps away Alex tends to his cymbals.
"I liked that song you had on," Ray comments.
"Sweet!" Luke exclaims, "We're Sunset Curve."
"Tell your friends," Reggie and I chime in and Reggie gives me a smile.
"It's just an old CD I found," Julie explains, emphasizing on old, ouch.
"Well, still, it's nice that you're listening to music again," Ray tells her, and it is, Julie hasn't really done much to do with music at all since I got here, he then flings his hands through Luke and Reggie, "Out here you can play whatever you want, whenever you want."
The guys gasp, not used to lifers phasing through them, they smile, and Reggie clearly thinks that Reggie is doing some good parenting, "That's nice."
Julie doesn't really care for this commentary, opting instead to forget we're ghosts and tell us to, "Stay out of this."
Ray, the poor guy, thinks she's talking to him and apologizes, "I-I'm sorry, honey. I didn't..."
Julie panics and immediately tries to correct herself, "Oh no, no, no, no. Not you. I mean... Uh... Er...You know, give me a minute," she grabs her dad's hand and leads him to the garage doors.
"Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. We're gonna figure out this music program thing," Ray reassures her.
"Thanks, Dad," Julie thanks him, she puts her hands on his and then juts her thumb towards the doors and he leaves.
Reggie and I wave to him, me out of habit, I've basically adopted him as my dad, I help him out here and there when he doesn't know it. It's mostly just moving his keys or phone towards him because he always seems to lose them.
Julie closes the door and the guys, and I begin to converse. "He likes our song," Luke smiles.
"Oh yeah. He doesn't count," Alex quickly objects, "He's a dad."
"He may not be the demographic, but he still likes it," I protest.
"Why can't you guys just be normal ghosts?" Julie questions and we turn to her, "Hang out at an old mansion. I hear Pasadena's nice!"
"Ugh!" she huffs and leaves the garage.
"I think she's warming up to us," Alex states sarcastically.
"Yeah, I've always wanted to go to Pasadena," Reggie says, head in the clouds.
"Gimme a second guys," Luke says and he poofs out.
"What is he doing?" I ask Alex and Reggie.
"He's probably going to talk to Julie, maybe try to convince her to let us stay," Alex explains.
"Yeah, he's always been passionate about music so finding out we can still play, and people can hear is like a massive deal for him," Reggie continues.
"Let's go see what she says," I say and all three of us poof out of the studio.
"I'm sorry you had a bad day," I hear Luke, "But three guys just found out that they had a bad 25 years, and a girl found out she had a bad 15 years, and then they found out that the one thing, the one thing they lived for in the first place they can still do. That's pretty rad."
Personally I think it was a great speech, until he ruined it with the super old outdated slang.
"You're right," Julie says, "It's just..."
"Your bad day," Luke finishes for her, "Yeah, I know."
He turns around a bit the guys and I kinda hide, "Look, I'm sorry we came into your life, but...what I just felt in there actually made me feel alive again. We all felt alive again. So, you can kick us out if you want, but we're not giving up music," he starts to get really excited again, "We can play again. That's a gift no musician would ever turn down!"
Ouch, that's gotta sting for Julie. She just looks at him with a deadpan face and he sighs.
"You gotta know that. Clearly, your mom was into music," oof, bad move Luke.
"Was," Julie corrects, with sorrow in her voice, "She passed away."
Luke face contorts as he realizes, "I am... so sorry."
"Yeah, we... we didn't know," Alex pitches in.
Julie just sighs, "It's all right."
She then takes a second to think to herself, "None of you have seen her anywhere, have you? From wherever you're from."
The guys and I shake our heads as Alex speaks, "Um... No. no, I mean, you're kind of the first person we've seen."
"Yeah, but she's not dead, so it doesn't answer her question," Reggie points out.
"But I am, and I'm the first ghost you've seen," I chip in.
"Yeah. I think she knows what we mean," Alex says exasperatedly, before turning back to Julie, "I'm sorry for your loss."
"Thanks," Julie says, then she apologizes "Sorry I got mad. You guys are kinda good."
This makes Luke perk up, "Kinda? Y-Y-You know that likes 25 and 15 years of rust just getting dusted off," he makes a dusting motion with his hands and all of us ghosts smile.
"Yeah. Do you play the piano too?" Reggie questions, I wait to see how she'll tackle the question curiously because I know that she did.
"No. No, I don't play," Julie immediately denies, there's my answer, "That was my mom's stuff in there."
"No way. She's an amazing songwriter," Luke comments.
"She's incredible," I add on.
"She was," Julie looks at the ground, "Wait. How would you know?"
Luke opens his mouth, then closes it before opening it again to speak, "There's a song on the piano. If it's hers..." he trails off.
"Your mom was really talented," I finish for him, "Like super talented."
Julie nods before looking to all of us, she begins to walk away before turning back to us, "I guess... if you need a place to stay... you can stay in there," she gestures to the garage.
We all begin to smile as she continues, "There's a bathroom in the back and a couch that turns into a bed if you still use any of that stuff."
"Dibs on the shower!" Reggie raises his hand before I can get a word out.
"Damnit!" I swear and the others look at us weirdly.
"I just really like showers," he explains.
"Same, and sometimes the occasional bath," I continue, and he snaps his finger pointing to me in agreement.
The others shake their heads at us, and Julie speaks again, "This..." she shakes her head and gestures to us ghosties, mainly Reggie and I, "This is just too weird."
She then leaves, closing the gate behind her. We all squeal and chuckle, high fiving each other and go back into the garage.
