Where in the world is Drangleic?
Tumblr media
Perhaps you've seen it, maybe in a dream. A murky, forgotten land. A place where souls may mend your ailing mind. Long ago, in a walled off land, far to the north, a great king built a great kingdom. I believe they called it Drangleic. Perhaps you're familiar. No, how could you be. But one day, you will stand before its decrepit gate. Without really knowing why... Like a moth drawn to a flame.
Dark Souls 2 is a very cryptic game: possibly even more so than the other entries in the series, which aren't known for being particularly transparent with their lore either. One of the game's many mysteries (which is never really elaborated on) is: where, exactly, is the kingdom of Drangleic located compared to Lordran?
There's a certain strangeness to Drangleic, certain parallels that seemingly ties it to Lordran. The most obvious is the 4 Lords that inhabit it, possessing the 4 Lord Souls from the first game: the Old Iron King, the Lost Sinner, the Rotten and the Duke's Dear Freja possess the Souls of Gwyn, the Witch of Izalith, Nito and Seath respectively. How did they end up here?
But there's more. When Manus died, its essence was split into four parts. These parts all ended up here, as the four queens that corrupted (willingly or unwillingly) the four monarchs that resided here. And again: the Chaos Flame, born from the Witch of Izalith turned Bed of Chaos, was found under the frozen City of Eleum Loyce. And again: the Chasm of the Abyss is accessible from Drangleic, and is seemingly inhabited by NPCs you previously faced in Dark Souls 1. What is going on?
Tumblr media
One interpretation I have seen is that Drangleic is none other than future Lordran, a kingdom that fell and rose again a countless amount of times, until the memory of old vanished, leaving only the ruins. It would fit with the themes of the game, but I personally do not believe it to be the case. The reasons are multiple: for example, I find it hard to believe that the entirety of Anor Londo would just disappear without a trace. But the reason, mostly, is Dark Souls 3.
Even if there is clearly a preference for the first installment of the series, Dark Souls 3 makes a pletora of references do 2 that clearly identify Drangleic as a foreign land.
Armour of the Drang Knights, proclaimed descendents of the land known for the legend of the Linking of the Fire.
Admittedly, I'm unsure why Drangleic and not Lordran would be the land known for the Linking of the Fire, but perhaps it has something to do with the Throne of Want (seemingly adapted in the Thrones of the Lords of Cinders) and the breaking of the curse for the (former) Bearer of the Curse. In addition, in the Ringed City DLC, we come across an area that, while very different, is identified as the Earthern Peak, presumably converging towards Lothric Castle as a result of the infinite cycle of the world, as stated by Ludleth. Also there's the fact that, you know, Anor Londo and Gwyndolin are still there as you left them in Dark Souls 1 despite not appearing in Drangleic, which would make little sense as Dark Souls 3 takes place after 2. Time fuckery? Perhaps, but I'm unconvinced.
Tumblr media
So, what in the hell is going on here? Let's look at some other things we know about Drangleic. First off, it is a place intimately connected to the curse of undeath and the endless cycle of fire and dark. While in Lordran most people were attempting to link the flame, the travellers to Drangleic are here to find an escape from the curse for themselves. Some have even come close to succeeding, like Aldia. In addition, the Kingdom seem to have been funded relatively recently by people coming from outside.
Let's also look at the place you cross to enter Drangleic. A location known as "Things Betwixt". A place between places, a gateway. Judging by the opening narration and cinematic, you were looking for something and somehow ended up there without really knowing why. The same is true for everyone else there. And, seemingly, you can't leave this land without fulfilling your objective.
Bearer of the curse… Seek souls. Larger, more powerful souls. Seek the King, that is the only way. Lest this land swallow you whole… As it has so many others.
Tumblr media
So here is my headcanon. Drangleic is a purgatory for those who are seeking something. A purgatory for wandering souls, left without a body and looking for a way to reincarnate: after eons of being lost, eventually both the Lord Souls and the Shards of Manus found their way here, as many other souls of enemies you killed have done. And it is also a purgatory for undead seeking answers: Lordran might be the epicenter of the curse, but Drangleic is the final destination for those who are desperately yearning to rid themselves of it (provided they do not go Hollow first, of course). One has to look for it to find it: and once they do, in time, they may find themselves here.
But the answer, of course, is that there is no answer. Drangleic might be the key to ridding oneself of the undead curse: but it is also the key to understanding that the real curse, the First Sin, cannot be escaped. One goes to Drangleic in the hope to find a purgatory, and at the end of it, redemption. Very few exit Drangleic, and those who do exit become aware that the entire world is a purgatory, and that there is no redemption. Linking the Flame, snuffing the Flame: it matters not. And yet.
There is no path. Beyond the scope of light, beyond the reach of Dark... What could possibly await us? And yet, we seek it, insatiably... Such is our fate.

So.. Today i played Elden Ring. For. Nine. Hours. Of unbridled fun. Smacked Margit and Godrick's asses today- Margit took me 3 tries, but G man only took one.. I fucking love this game and im crying bc i love who got it for me.. I feel like i just learned about DS3 again! Back in 2016.. I got it after it dropped because Oceiros really intrigued me (a friend showed the trailer fight to me, the jap version was already released.)
It means alot to me to feel that.. New again. Sure i get mad, but that's the joy and beauty of any Soulsborne game. You overcome the challenge- by relentlessly dying and learning. If i can't do a boss i go and grind, i learned that a while ago.. A whole six years.
The Soulsborne series has a big place in my heart.. It helped me cope with the harsh reality of things, it gave me a safe place. After completing DS3, i kinda felt.. Empty. So i went and bought Bloodborne. Completed that 100% before i bought DS1 Prepare to Die, and DS2 SOTFS (DS2 i still haven't completed yet.. But im working on it) and i loved playing all of them. Only this year did i complete DS1 and experienced the beauty of the end of the original. I was left satisfied, and am doing an Artorias Run NG+. After i completed DS1, i hopped onto 2 and started making quick work of the game. I started at Dukes Dear Freja, and ended with Old Iron King. Over the course of days, of course! God help me if i did that all in one day..
But to Elden Ring. I wanted it the moment it was announced. We all want more Souls games, and yearn for the same punishing yet excruciatingly fun game. Elden Ring is fucking stunning, such gorgeous visuals and smooth combat. Just getting to jump? Good lord it's a Souls veteran dream!
I really love these games.. I know basically everything about DS1, DS3, and Bloodborne. Im still working through DS2, chopping away at the raw lore left and finding diamonds, yet i can still sum it up. Elden Ring though? Well, i know virtually nothing. I do know some things, like whos behind the Night of the Black Blades, why it happened, but beyond that? Nothing. And i like it that way! Im diving in blind to see what's beyond what i know. Out of my comfort zone.
I aim to play more tommorow.

Who IS Seath?
"Awarded a Dukedom for his betrayal of the Everlasting Dragons, the albino dragon Seath the Scaleless has since become obsessed with his sorcerous experiments and research. Functionally immortal due to his possession of the Primordial Crystal, Seath uses his Channelers to seek out subjects for his nefarious procedures."
Pre-Note ::
This is all speculation, headcanon, straw-clutching and all the rest. I know some of this is far out, but I love the implications and the potential storylines to be had with Seath playing imposter to some of these people.
I really wanted to make a post re Seath’s references in each game / which character he takes the form of in each game. Now, this can and will be used in threads - in fact - it’s something I’d love to explore! I wont be included Demon’s Souls in this, as I don’t really think it makes enough sense to imply Seath is the Old Monk (in fact, it makes more sense to suggest the reverse I think).
Dark Souls 1 //
In Dark Souls 1 / Dark Souls 1 universes, Seath is as you see him - he’s the dragon scholar, blind and without legs - a mortal dragon cursed to live so unlike his kin and absolutely bitter and mad as a result. In this verse, he takes a dragon form and will only look this way (the way he looks in game). He can speak and communicate, though he is largely lost to madness.
Dark Souls 2 //
In Dark Souls 2, Seath takes the form of the Duke’s Dear Freja, aka, the big spider in Brightstone Cove. A once sweet little spider that grew to an enormous size, kept by its master - the Duke (who went insane and is implied to have been possessed by Seath). Manscorpion Tark even alludes to his master never truly dying and instead being an immortal being - forever destined to live through possession of others.
I say that Seath was the spider because of its size and the fact it nests on and feasts on the remains of a dragon - something that Seath would 100000% do.
Soul of the ineffable: This once magnificent soul continues to exert influence over the land, even after the eons have reduced it to these remnants.
Dark Souls 3 //
In the Dark Soul 3 universe, Seath takes the form of the Consumed KIng, Oceiros - the reason for this is because of his obsession with Seath the Scaleless, born from research of Logan’s that had been found. This is where the obsession with rebirth begins (which I’m going to go into further detail on in the Elden Ring section). In this verse, he takes the form of the consumed king, obsessed with being a ‘legit’ dragon and obsessed with his dragonborn child. Ultimately, he’s as mad as ever.
Elden Ring //
So, I made a post about this recently joking about how Seath’s influence can be seen in Rennala and you know what...I’m running with it. I know a case can be made for Rykard, what with his relation to the god-devouring serpent and his experiments performed around Mt Gelmir but the fact is, I don’t see it. Rykard is way too self-aware and he’s shown to very much have hit wits about him, if anything *he* controls the snake when if this was Seath’s influence, surely it’d be the other way? Not to mention, Seath always sided with gods - he never had any reason to attack them or ‘devour’ them.
The reason I chose Rennela for this comparison is primarily because of a few things -
-her madness -her connection to magic and outer influence  -her obsession with death & rebirth
All of these tie into Seath’s being and his influences throughout the series. He’s shown to be absolutely insane and obsessed with immortality / rebirth / living forever. He’s an entity that has existed and travelled from soul to soul, seeing the world through so many lenses it would manifest itself in ways different but always similar in theme. Rennela is connected to magic in a way that Seath was, she was highly skilled, a scholar and a teacher - somebody who created her own extremely powerful sorceries (including moon based sorcery, much like Seath’s moonlight Greatsword). Also, I can only begin to imagine the connections between Seath’s crystals and the somewhat forbidden glintstone sorceries.
I think Rennela is different from other iterations of Seath because she is harmless. Ultimately, she’s a woman driven mad by the break of her family and now her obsession around death and rebirth leads to her creating these somewhat flawed (if not immortal) creatures as she cuddles them like children (urrrr, Oceiros anyone?). I believe Seath’s influence took hold after Radagon left her and rather than devolve into madness and become like the others, Rennala was strong enough to instead channel her possession into a constant (almost-catatonic) state of insanity / cycle of death & rebirth.
Essentialy, what I’m saying is that in my Elden Ring verse - Seath will be this form of Rennala. Not the strong woman we know to have once fought for Caria and be wedded to Radagon but instead the husk we meet obsessed with rebirth. Her mind was already broken and in through the cracks slipped Seath.

MW2 campaign early access is tomorrow! But I’m still in the middle of a Dark Souls 3 run and I’m in the middle of VLR on my 3DS. My plan is to keep playing DS3 just enough to keep up with Bonfire Side Chat, the dark souls podcast I’m listening to. But they just beat the Duke’s Dear Freja in DS2 and I just killed the first Crystal Sage in DS3 so I’ve got plenty of time there. And I really wanna get through VLR to avoid spoilers.
But also I’m going on a trip this weekend! So lots to juggle. I’d like to finish MW2 before the multiplayer is even out so I have that blueprint. It’s the most fun to have blueprints when you otherwise don’t have anything unlocked. I could just not let myself play the MP until I beat the story, I suppose :) I could also just wait to play any of it until I get through the stuff I’m currently working on, but I think it makes more sense to focus on something that has more active current online discourse, even if it’s just a silly shooter.

A fanmade song for Duke's Dear Freja from Dark Souls II.
An andante tempo with a pulsing rhythm to give a ballroom dance feel to a fight with a lady that deserves as much. A powerful bass to blend with the more dire parts of the melody to encapsulate the power of Freja and her children with a solitary music box to fade out on as she and her children finally pass. Here's the playlist for All My Souls Season II: The Good Senator, I try to upload a new part of it every 2 days:

RACHEL RANKS: DARK SOULS TRILOGY BOSSES FROM WORST TO BEST
Tumblr media
#69 (nice): The Duke’s Dear Freja (Dark Souls 2)
“The Writhing Ruin is an ancient thing whose shadow remains cast over the land.”
I don't like spiders. I really, REALLY don't like spiders. No offense to those who do, but they scare the bejeezus out of me. But for all of your sakes, I have put aside my personal feelings so I can discuss how this boss just SUCKS IN GENERAL. The torch to keep spider mobs away is a nice touch (one of the few Scholar changes I actually appreciate), and the double head mechanic is...different, at least. But that doesn't change the fact that this fight is insanely easy to cheese with pretty much any build and otherwise plain old boring if you choose not to go that route. Also...that fucking laser. This God Damn nasty arachnid MENACE has a laser attack specifically designed to demonstrate how terrible ADP is as a mechanic. If you're too far away, she'll do nothing but spam it over and over, and without super high adp you WILL get hit if you're as much as within 5 feet of it. I'd tell her to get her head out of her ass and fight normally, but...well, you know how it is. Man, am I glad we're finally done with the terrible bosses.
