one of the funniest things in ck is how dunyasha is presented as this special snowflake, the literal embodiment of the chosen one trope, but then the characters just treat her like this:
“I am Dunyasha, the White Blade, trained by the Sages of Ahmrat Jen, the greatest assassin of this age.” - “Doesn’t ring a bell.”
“Fate brought me here.” - “And does fate pay your wages?” Inej asked, sizing her up.
“Someone likes drama,” Nina said. “I mean really, who wears white to a knife fight?” “Dunyasha, the White Blade of something or other. She really wants to kill me. Possibly everyone.”
“The blood you spill is the blood of kings,” seethed Dunyasha. “You are not fit for such a gift.” - Inej raised a brow and slowly wiped the blood of kings on her trousers.

one part of six of crows that i appreciate very much is the explicit conflict between inej’s actions as a killer and her faith. she knows what she is doing is wrong, and she knows that she still has to do it to survive (innocence is a luxury), and she believes with all her heart that she can be forgiven and understood (innocence is not required by her saints).
this is something that i feel gets lost in some post-canon stories that have inej hunting slavers as an act of divine retribution, committing violence in the name of what is holy. not only does this ignore the fact that her motivations are mostly political (the government does not care to address this issue, so she makes them do it, or does it herself), it also disregards the importance of dunyasha as her foil. dunyasha is contrasted with inej by her abilities, training, and privilege (and privileged outlook), but also by the fact that dunyasha kills for something, for a god or divinity. dunyasha justifies her actions by her beliefs, and inej hopes for understanding, knowing that they go against her beliefs and that her judgment is merely human.

crooked kingdom & king of scars spoilers
realizing for the first time that dunyasha lazareva (who apparently has lantsov blood) wears white and gold, which are ravkan servant colours. i wonder if that was intentional to show a distance between dunyasha and the country she wants to rule (no way dunyasha would wear servant colours if she knew, the way she reacted to just inej wiping away her "blood of kings" tells you she feels very superior). or does it signify something else in ahmrat jen, where she trained?
(for some added cool info about the ravkan royalty during shadow and bone and the servant colours from genya's beautiful perspective, check the awesome short story the tailor by leigh bardugo!)
another funny thing about dunyasha lazareva is that she is confirmed dead by tamar's intelligence network in king of scars, which canonically takes place several months after crooked kingdom. bestie, you were in the city when she died. your intelligence couldn't get to you that, oh yeah, the date of death is the same as that of the funky auction for a certain inferni we're definitely not witness protecting? and them discussing the person who murdered dunyasha as a potentially dangerous new player! you met her acquaintances! she pitches up to your party in rule of wolves! ravka really out there doing the most.

i think that a good measure for whether or not your chosen one or true heir to the throne or cool assassin character is clichéd is to consider whether or not they have anything in common with dunyasha lazareva and if the answer is “yes, but done unironically” you should maybe go back to the drawing board

This one was a misstep in the alphabetical order too, since i was focused on Inej being a main character and didn’t take in count Dunyasha’s name. Let’s hope this is the last one

Inej: Saints, give me patience.
Dunyasha: I think you mean 'give me strength'.
Inej: If the saints gave me strength, you'd be dead.

was anyone else a little disappointed with the Lantsov heir in king of scars and rule of wolves? Like I was hyped up the second I heard Lantsov I was like hooray! Another Lazareva maybe? Like I was so prepared for an epic fighter like Dunyasha Lazareva that when Vadik Demidov showed up I was like, this? This is the heir? Where are his throwing stars?!

Murder schemes, masquerades and an unrightful princess
~ a closed starter for @braveandunbreakable
Bright chandelier light, reflected by crystals and gemstones framing the tall double eagle doors. Everything was drenched in gold and pale blue, an occasional dab of navy, purpur and ivory then and there. Kitsch was somehow running in the family, Vasily concluded as he strode down the hallway to the ballroom with quick light steps, nodding at the guards standing in attention at the sides.
The tsar had recently fallen ill to an unknown affliction no doctor seemed to be able to cure and his mother refused to let any Grisha near him in fear they might worsen his condition. Not that it could get any worse, he thought to himself grimly as he slowed a little to adjust the mask over his face. To scare the sickness away, his mother had told him when he asked who'd had the glorious idea to throw a masquerade so close to his coronation - with his father on his deathbed and the country in turmoil. He couldn't care less for his father, the sooner he was gone the better. Under his influence, he'd suffered more than he'd like to admit. Nothing had ever been up to him, it was always the tsar who had the last word over everything. Only in recent years Vasily had managed to dig his father's claws out of him and DECIDE on his own.
That's why he wasn't married, why he had no heir, why he'd joined the cavalry and had not taken a more administrative position in the army. The music was audible even from miles away, a soft, gentle Ravkan Waltz, perfect for slow dancing in the dark with the love of his life. If he had one.
Well...
It was complicated.
Sergei Beznikov, heartrender, currently leading the second army while General Kirigan was off hunting the sun summoner or whatever he was up to. The man had caught his eye one night, he'd been assigned to guard him ever since his father's contagion. Out of teasing remarks and banter had grown something more, something intimate he couldn't put into words. The mere sight of him caused his heart to flutter and race, his exhaustion and desperation to fade. He felt at ease. Serene, calm. Happy. It was odd, really, after so many years of not knowing what love was supposed to be, to have and hold someone so close to his heart.
Vasily passed another set of guards, straightening his pompous military dress uniform as he realized he wasn't far from the ball anymore. For madraya, he did all of this for her. Because she believed his father might actually miraculously recover in time before his coronation.
He could only hope it was wishful thinking or else-
Well, he could always have a word with Sergei.
❝ The Tsesarevich, Vasily Alexandrovich Lantsov. ❞
Someone belatedly announced him, countless gazes flicking to him as he walked past the guests, a flute of champagne in his hand he'd just picked up from a tray a maid had been carrying. Never in his life had the smile on his face been that fake. That superficial.
❝ Madraya. ❞
He greeted, hiding the sheer annoyance in his voice. His mother was her usual self, immaculately tailored to look decades younger than she was, swathed in a fine, silky dress studded with jewels.
A dowager queen.
❝ I must apologize for my belated arrival but my general and I had important business to attend to... ❞

Was this way too much effort for a parody? Yes. Was it worth it? I don’t fucking know. But never let it be said that I don’t commit to the bit.
Dunyasha Lazareva in the style of bowater, because it’s only right that for a parody of Aelin Ashryver Galathinius of the Too Many Titles.
