Episode 37 - Ditto and the Copycat Girl

Taking shelter from a rainstorm in the mysterious Mimic House/House of Imite, where they meet a young girl about Ash's age named Imite/Duplica. She's raising the gimmick Pokemon Ditto!

Ash offends Duplica by implying that Ditto doesn't sound like a very good Pokemon and she challenges him to a match. He's right in his assessment; Ditto's Transform gimmick is neat, but having to burn a turn using it while your opponent gets a free move in means you're ultimately always trying to use the same approach your opponent's using but a turn behind.

Sorry, Duplica, but Ditto is always at a disadvantage in every possible encounter by design. Competitively, they're among the worst Pokemon ever. Your opponent pretty much has to be a total clod to lose to them.

This is a fight Ash should easily win. Naturally, that means he loses. Ditto imitates Bulbasaur, then defeats Bulbasaur with their own Vine Whip after Razor Leaf, a move with 95% accuracy, misses. Stupid cheating game.

Follow Duplica's lucky victory, she reveals that she's not actually trying to be a competitive Trainer. Her aspiration is to perform costume shows to entertain passing travelers. However, her Ditto has an unfortunate quirk that prevents them from being able to properly imitate a Pokemon: They can't copy faces.

Then Team Rocket shows up and steals Ditto. They have a plan: If they can get Ditto to impersonate the Dratini from the banned Safari Zone episode, they can defraud Giovanni into thinking they're good at their jobs. (I love these assholes. XD)

But before they do that, Jessie uses Ditto to make a grown-up Deepfake of her first childhood boyfriend out of curiosity. Due to Ditto's quirk, this does not go well.

Team Rocket manages to solve Ditto's problem, fortunately. It turns out, all they needed to be able to Transform fully was some good ol' violent threats and abuse. Heartwarming?

Team Rocket is fended off, of course. But the fruits of their efforts mean Duplica and her Ditto are able to reopen the Mimic House for passing travelers! Some actual net-positive as a result of these hucksters for once!

thinking abt dittos so intensely beaming them with my eyes. i think itd be rly cool if no ditto was able to transform perfectly.. hut could learn how to ykwim.. like with duplicas ditto in the anime where.oriiginally they werent able to transform face but overcame that by the end of theepisode. like that. but also i think they could all have dofferent issues (which does have basis i fink. bc of duplicas other ditto mini-dit (can transform perfectly but cant change size) like maybe one cant replicate the colors so theyre judt a perfect replica but ditto colored. or one cant chabge texture and stays jiggly. etc

Ditto transformed into the enemy Polderjoch!

Part of my series "150 followers, 150 pokémon" from Twitter. Ditto's Mysterious Mansion, the 37th episode of the pokémon anime, was released at a time when the pokémon fandom was reaching a peak. It was one of the few episode which, truly, everyone saw, as it occurred very close to a hiatus in new episodes (don't worry, our TV overlords kept us filled with reruns in the interim). This episode featured a Ditto that, although it could transform into any pokémon, trainer, or indeed object, was unable to change its face. Fans quickly adopted the theory that all Ditto start out like that, something that wouldn't change until another Ditto appeared over a hundred episodes later in Gen 2, which made Ditto's popularity tank. ^{In Gen 4, this was reversed to say most Ditto can't transform their faces but the damage was done: Ditto was already the butt of all the Daycare jokes.} For my 132nd follower, @@Polderjoch, I decided to draw a Ditto transforming into its new trainer hoping to please him. Look at him, he's so happy! (original sketch) I was prepared to deal with the motion blur of the tail wag this time, I was not prepared for how many spots Polderjoch's fur has. This is the only time I'm going to "close" fur strands: it's a tell-tale for the character presented to be more easily identifiable as a Ditto (even if it can transform its face). Once again, anybody wants any of the pokémon sketches colored, modified to fit a different 'sona, or touched up, let me know and I'll do it for cheap
