Hi looking for some help, I am doing a 114 mile sportive on May 6th 2022 the Fred Whitton Challenge with over 11000 feet climbing and 30% gradients. At the moment I have a 9100 dura ace group set 50/34 crankset and 28/11 rear cassette. Ideally I need a minimum 32 cassette but not sure if my dura ace 9100 Long cage rear mech is suitable to take this size of gearing cassette. Any advice would be greatly received. Thanks Derek Cumming, Dundee,Scotland.

RD9100 can handle a 34 cassette and often a 36 even on some frames.

You can also put a 46/30 absolute black chainrings on any 11spd shimano road cranks.

Neo-retro project: My 1995 Cannondale R400

A few months, I saw on Instagram a pretty beautiful Cannondale R400 in some sort of ocean blue color (it has a specific name that I can't find right now). I decided to buy it and see how it'd ride.

The first few rides went ok but far from the comfort of a modern build. I first thought about changing just the cockpit but would always run into some incompatibilities with the groupset (mix of 10-speed 105 and Ultegra). I also found the cassette too small to really go on long adventures with the bike. Lastly, the beautiful Flite saddle simply wasn't that comfortable for me.

So I ended changing almost everything, for the following result:

Note: the saddle was a bit low when I took the photos, and I have plans to lower the stem for a more aero riding position.

1995 Cannondale R400 in size 57cm with original fork

Full Dura Ace 9100 in 52–36 (apart from Ultegra 11–30 cassette and the Campagnolo Chorus brakes — I liked the look better)

Campagnolo Bora WTO 33 wheelset (currently with some pretty average Michelin tires to be replaced with Continental GP5000 25mm soon)

Deda Piega 26 mm/42 cm handlebar

Nitto NTC-A Dynamic Quill Stem Black in 80mm

Deda Elementi Superleggero 0mm Inline Carbon Seatpost 27.2mm

Selle Italia SLR Boost Kit Carbonio Superflow Saddle Black L3

So how does it ride?

Overall, I'm very happy with the build and you can see my first ride with it on Strava. However, it might have been a better idea to get the Bora WTO in 45mm — the current build is very comfortable but clearly lacks the stiffness and reactivity of a modern bike. A deeper wheelset would help bring back a bit of stiffness. It's more than enough for a nice social ride on Sunday, though :).

５号車の試乗が進みワイヤーの初期伸びが出たり、ホイールのベアリングが馴染んできたり、漆が透けてきたりと変化が出てきました。今日はワイヤーの伸びを取ってディレイラーの調整をしてから少し走りました。 このバイクで使ったシマノのVibeシリーズのハンドルバーやステム、シマノProのサドルですが、サドルは自分には合わない感じがします。まあ、でも、悪くない。 ハンドルバーを程よい剛性があるように感じます。これは良い部品だと思います。 ６号車のハンドルバー、ステム、シートポスト、サドルはこれと同じものを使うことにします。 コンポーネントも同じR7000のセットを発注しました。ディスクブレーキとリムブレーキの違いがありますが、６号車はほぼ同じ部品構成になります。 大きな違いはホイール。 奮発してDura AceのWH-9100…

(On my John Watson/Radavist shit) My Street Machine 2.0, version 2 (1990s F. Moser TK1). After giving up on finding a set of Dura Ace 7900 brifters (I like a cleaner look IMO), I decided to upgraded from Dura Ace 7800 to Ultegra R8000 (with a light-and-responsive-as-fuck Dura Ace 9100 FD). The brifters are fucking comfy, and the brakes are smooth and quick. Honestly, I don’t regret the change to 11-speed. Now I understand why cyclist are fucking with 11-speed; however Shimano needs to make their shit more available to everyone (including Brick-and-Mortars). 

The only thing that remains is the cockpit (SimWorks CoMisirou bars, Tomato stem and Sim Drop bar ends; Thomson Elite seatpost; Selle San Marco Concor saddle; and the Prometh water bottle). S/o to King Kog in Oakland for making this shit happen, even though I had to be patient with everything.
