Come get your angsty song edit!!! Long ago, I said I'd take DVK 2 and replace the dialogue with angsty lyrics, and I did! What a fantastic layout and typography exercise. Special thanks to @everypanelofkatsuki who provided me with most of these panels! Thanks! Your help was invaluable.

Lyrics are from Boygenius' Bite the Hand. Like many of the songs I listen to when I think of these characters, I think it can apply to a large portion of the cast, but I always think of Kacchan first.

Everyone in class A probably assumes that bakugo listens to heavy metal and just generally really edgy music, which would explain in their minds why he always looks so angry when he’s listening to music. But in reality he’s actually listening to Taylor swift and thinking about izuku. Midoriya, in actuality, is the one who listens to heavy metal.

Also now that I’m reading these chapters together (dvk2 and togachako fight) they seem to parallel a lot more than I first thought. Almost like they two pairs are saying one of the two sides to their stories

Like, okay, THIS is an underlying feeling that Ochako is experiencing

And toga is experiencing this

But she also experiences this

Anyway they’re all terrible at communicating. I wanna show a few parallels for bkdk’s that shows that ochako at the very least cares about toga, possibly even loves her. But that’ll be in another post (especially since it’s in the context of chapter 375)

1) i am juuuust sliding under the wire to post this on time in my home time zone, but miracle of miracles, lunch at school yesterday was mapo tofu

god okay. i read a deku meta a few weeks ago that essentially made the argument that deku desperately wants to fit in and be “normal” (in the sense that all of his interests and aspirations are “basic”, but also that he just. does NOT fit in and is almost naive in his desire to want to MAKE himself fit in) and that interpretation of deku has not left my mind since.

obviously i’m super fond of the interpretation that deku wants to become a hero because he intrinsically wants to help people, but there’s something SO interesting in the interpretation that he wants to be a hero because he sees himself as fundamentally broken and weird and unable to relate to his peers, and him becoming a hero (=becoming “normal”) would fix the part of himself that feels broken and alien.

The other day I came across a BNHA anime reaction channel, an actually good one where the reactors tried to understand and criticize the show, you know?

Anyway, they were watching the UA exam arc where Bakudeku had to pair up against All Might, and one of the reactors said something like “Bakugou was very unreasonable here, but I think if his partner was someone other than Deku, like someone he was close to, he might’ve cooperated in a team-up exam.” (I think she meant Kirishima here)

I kid you not, the other guy reactor actually pulled a confused face and said “Deku is not someone he’s close to? What’s the definition of a close friend again?” ...and I think it’s so interesting how different people view their relationship at the beginning of the series. Sure how Katsuki acted towards Izuku seemed like he hated him, but in the context of them being childhood friends who were still together until now - it’s more than just surface-level acquaintance.

#and it just gets better for bkdk after dvk2! #i think it’s all in cultural context #which is why so many western fans talk down on bkdk and praise kr//bk #kirishima to me is THE typical best friend character here #btw the reactors were 3 girls and 1 guy who were all at least in their 30s #so their mature opinions were very much appreciated #would’ve recommended their channel but it wasn’t in english!

obsessed with this idea that nobody can really get through to midoriya like bakugo can lol. all might and gran torino give great advice that help them progress but it wasn't until bakugo proclaimed he'll be number 1 in the sports festival that midoriya felt the urgency to do the same. it was bakugo on his mind when he tried to control his quirk under gran torino's guidance. it was his moves that he copied. it was bakugo's words in dvk2 that popped into his mind when he asked about the internship. it was bakugo's strategy that he tried to reuse in the joint training arc.

and bakugo knows this?? after dvk2, after he finally understood and accepted that midoriya had never held any malice towards him, instead only ever admired and looked up to him, it sort of just clicked into his mind. like he finally had the pieces together that midoriya is a stubborn boy who's somehow fixated on him, and he could use this to his advantage (or in this case midoriya's own advantage).

it's like he knew exactly the right way to get through to him, even though they've basically misunderstood each other their whole lives lol. he was the only one that can push midoriya, the one midoriya would want to emulate and be rivals with at the same time. and that was who he shall become.

"look at me, i'll win with your method. i'll save to win, and i'll let my teammates save me to win. watch me, keep your eyes on me, and copy me."
