Just Watched Japan Sinks 2020

From the gang who brought ya Devilman Crybaby. NGL that's the whole reason I watched this.

Japan gets hit with the worst earthquake ever and amidst the submerged land, exploding volcanoes and continuous earthquakes, the Japanese-Filipino Mutoh family with their friends are trying to survive.

I feel like they do a good job at exploring older people's xenophobic tendencies, youth's interest in other countries and the subsequent disinterest of their own, and how racist ultra-nationalist people sound like (spoiler: stupid as fuck). The focus is in Japan and the Japanese, but I think it's an universal thing that happens everywhere else. The make-shift hot spring scene is a great conclusion for this conflict.

If you come here expecting Devilman Crybaby 2, don't. For one, this is a realistic theme, especially if you ever experience huge scale of earthquake, with all the causes of deaths possible in such situations.

And then the "rawness" in this series is not as "raw" as Devilman Crybaby, if you get what I mean. There is nothing like Devilman Dash. Maybe because again, this is on the realistic side, not fantasy-divinity-fueled. Although this one has canabis and cult so there’s that.

But it does still have its moments. Like when the characters are shocked or fighting for their survival, their faces contort to show the raw emotion. Classic Yuasa, as I who only watched DVMCB said. I don’t mean to compare this to DVMCB but I can’t help in the end.

Mari!! Best mom!! I really love her optimism and mental fortitude. When she has no choice but to carry the team herself now, she does her absolute best. When she has a heart to heart with Daniel and cries when she cuts Ayumu's hair, I just T_T

KITE is an mvp but seriously who the hell is this guy? Are you sure he is just some famous youtuber with all that amazing survival skill, great music literacy, vast driving capability and paramount super luck? I don't buy it. Side note, feels like Kensho Ono is showing off all his talents here lol.

I wish they explore Haruo's story more. Like why he was a hikikomori? He is a big question mark since ep 1. Same thing with Nanami. She is good at kicking ass and caring for people.

I love how Ayumu's first reaction when she wakes up from the earthquake is to scream and run away from her dying classmates, as opposed to help them like a hero from a story, and then for the rest of the series she tries to save people and has guilt over her action. It's so humane. And she's such a good sister to Go.

As usual for survival in disaster stories, the large party usually gets killed one by one. I don't actually want to say this but I have to admit, they do kill the characters a little bit too fast and too often. I mean, DVMCB did too but by that time I already got attached to them since I knew their backstories so their deaths hit hard. But JS doesn't dig much on that. Though the last episode that shows a bit of everyone's pasts did make me tear up.

Oh well, I said this and that but that didn't mean I didn't cry everytime someone dies. I'm weak to family stories after all.

This series has a good heart, despite the tragedies. That I can say wholeheartedly.

TL;DR: Came for Yuasa, stayed for the wonderful family dynamic, KITE and the weed cult.
