The inherently grieving process of finishing a dw season and being unable to move on to the next one because you still haven’t mourned the loss of the last companion enough and you need to cry about them some more

merry! hope you're well ❤️ random doctor who question of the day that you are more than welcome to ignore: what are some of your favourite songs from the doctor who soundtracks? (this ask was brought to you by me listening to The Majestic Tale (Of A Madman In a Box))
hiiii I love a random dw question of the day 🥺 and oh boy I have soooo many. I'M SO HAPPY MURRAY'S BACK. mr murray gold has had me in a choke hold since the age of 14!! I loveee majestic tale too! but other than that one my faves are:
Clara In The TARDIS (track from The Snowmen when Clara follows the Doctor up the ladder to the tardis). I listen to this all the time it just gently strokes the happy receptors in my brain idk why
hello twelve - this is 47 seconds and goes so fucking hard murray is such a lunatic I love him.
this is gallifrey, our childhood, our home - this is Murray's magnum opus imo (this and all the strange creatures). needs no intro. I don't even know if the season 3 finale would have been good without this piece of music
hidden treasures - from Vincent and the Doctor, pretty much every track for that episode is dear to my heart but I adore this one. The last 15 seconds makes me cry.
my tardis - this is the little piece that plays when the Doctor meets idris when she's locked in the cage hehe it's just cute. used to be a favourite track to study to
tell me who you are - I genuinely think this scene (where river finally explains she's amy and Rory's kid) is one of the most dramatic scenes ever and I think part of why it goes so hard apart from everyone Acting™ is this track. This comes on shuffle I'm like fuck yeah
same old day - honestly I feel like my fave tracks are just reflective of my favourite eps. These ones from heaven sent + Peter's performance. what TV is all about innit
Murray's instrumental of 'Don't Stop Me Now' from mummy on the orient express is so fucking good. Makes that shit ep worthwhile.
just generally adore all of season 5 and 6 score as a general rule cos I love elevens main themes. fave special score is a Christmas Carol but of course it is cos that ep is about music so it has to be amazing.
I actually....don't really vibe the season 1-2 scores I don't think murray had found his groove yet but season 3 through 6 imo was his best work on the show which isn't to say the rest is Bad I just think he was really on a roll.
I wish the BBC would release season 10's score cos I love Bill's theme so much and it's been 6 whole years and it's not been released and idk why ://

oh wow. so the christmas special was a lot of fun! my main thoughts..
Ruby feels like a mashup of rose and clara with a dash of amy— idk if that was intentional, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing bc i think anyone who likes Ruby and hasn’t seen previous series can go back and watch those previous companions for the first time and find familiarity in them— but i really didn't like clara’s personality (or the actor), and i think ruby comes across as more of an algorithm designed character than a person which isn’t great in this war against ai. i like her backstory, her family and friends and being a muso are all great, but i need a few more eps to guage how i feel about her bc i don't love who they cast and she's trying too hard and the chemistry with ncuti just isn't there (maybe they'll become mates irl and that rapport will soon filter into their dynamic)—but it's early days, so we'll see how i feel about her and them by the end of the first season.
i love Ncuti! it's very early days so i'm curious to see how his vibe develops and how his dynamic settles with Ruby. he reminds me so much of eric from Sex Education—not a bad thing at all! i love that energy and that swagger and that vivacious youth! however: that intro club scene where he's dancing (even though it was fun af) was giving zero Doctor Who vibes (i especially didn't like the song choice, personal preference) but that might just be normal? how it usually goes with every new doctor this millenium? they all feel so different from the previous doctor's era vibes, which makes sense bc they're meant to be carving their own style etc. and keeping with the times..
ncuti is the youngest doctor yet, his companion is the youngest since the vintage days, and various character details from both of them point towards this series being geared at GenZ and GenA, trying to bring the joy and wonder to younger viewers— and i love that! it feels fresh! it’s modern! but as someone in their early 30s who can no longer bear watching teen dramedies (even if they are the best chance of seeing queer rep) bc the writing can be terrible but moreover i've just aged out of relating to people in their teens (especially GenZ/A) i just hope the writing of DW doesn't take on that same teen mindset so much that it puts off older viewers. i also worry he’s not believable as a doctor on earth bc he looks so young, but *handwavey*.
singing goblins? fun. singing doctor? well, it's ncuti so it was awesome. but knowing ruby is in a band, and this doctor can sing.. look, i just don't want to see more random musical numbers pop up in future eps— but i'm not a fan of musical eps in anything, so again, personal preference. it's a very american thing to do, inserting musical numbers into non-musical shows, so maybe it'll pull more american viewers?
the goblins look cool and the cgi works without looking fake and they use prosthetics for the goblin king which works well. it’s monstery fun doctor who! magic as science! language of ropes! conicidence! i think we’ll see a lot more fantasy over scifi this series, as was started with the whole salt spilling at the edge of the universe, and as a lover of supernatural and scifi i’m excited for the melding of the two! there’s a lot of fun and mystery to be found in that genre mashup. but one baby for all those goblins? or just the king? i have notes.
Fifteen being a foundling like Ruby hints at the arc of the series? will we find out who the doctor's parents are? was he created in a stardust labratory? is he really a human being from 20th/21st century earth? (would explain his returning to that era so often his whole life and seeking companions from then and there) IS RUBY THE DOCTOR? i love this setup, this mystery, and the theory that the one who left Ruby is Thirteen.
the best christmas song choices imho. the music and set design was festive and warm and such a treat, although i wish more scenes were set at night so we could get more christmas lights and lighting magic - the apartment and the church lighting were so beautiful and vibrant! the daytime setting just didn’t pop, it was bland.
shoutout to the crack in Ruby’s apartment swallowing her up in time— who else screamed Amelia Pond! the crack in my wall! and pointed manically at the screen? i feel you.
all in all: fun, smiles, thrills, almost tears. not a lot of feels even when they were prompted, but that might be on me not loving Ruby atm and not the writing lacking anything— i think this series is gonna deliver on the feels front, no question about it.
i think people who enjoyed the 21st century doctors, as well as those who are new to the show, will enjoy this ep and Ncuti’s portrayal (especially those who are fans of Sex Education). very curious to see how existing fans react to Ruby’s casting and characterisation and whether i’m in the minority of not liking her. but this was a fun little adventure! i’m looking forward to the series bc ncuti is a powerhouse and with RTD back at the helm and fantasy-scifi angle, i think we're in for some good storytelling.
ruby's actor is my main hangup, but we'll see. we shall see..

okay fine i'm falling back into the hole i'll summarise all my doctor whomst aus again
clara - canon. victorian clara au where she travels with the doctor after surviving the snowmen, otherwise following the events of canon (with eps set in her home life translated to the victorian era).
molly - bf canon. eight's companion, an irish maid-turned-wwi VAD. mostly set either during her travels or back in her own time once she stops travelling with him, when she's living in the doctor's house in london, a full nurse, and helping people out there. always alien things in london, even in 1918.
georgie - seconded to UNIT from the regular army after her courageous actions in horrifically traumatic situations, sgt lane is a combat medic, and on the front line of every awful alien event that seems to happen in the uk, because it's constant and it's all terrible. wants to leave the army, UNIT is declining, she's heavily traumatised, and she knows any time the doctor appears, something awful is about to happen. also has a similar au for third doc's time stuck on earth with UNIT in the '70s.
sidney - not technically an au; she's set in the future of our universe (which i can give more details about if necessary). an android with a gun for an arm, roller skates for feet, a cybernetic eye, and a love of grenades, dressed like a 1950s diner waitress, sid was originally designed to be an any-purpose droid. first and only of her line, has sentience and free will that she's still trying to figure out what it means. her canon is chaos and would cross over with dw very well (let her have some fun tardis adventures i Beg).
pippa - she had a marvellous time ruining everything. a regency era Eligible Young Lady (nonbinary if they had the word for it ty) who stole a time machine to escape a suffocating, miserable life, with absolutely no idea how any of it works. they love chaos, disrupting order and the way society is "meant" to be. keeps going back in time to change what's meant to be a fixed point so their best friend doesn't die, keeps destroying the fabric of the universe in the process and the universe keeps killing him so they do it again, and knows it bc they are time sensitive. they're just both selfish and terrified of being alone.
bea - from a future human post-apocalyptic colony, she has psychic abilities she is afraid of and doesn't know how to use. loves drawing, the stars, herbalism, and taking things apart to see how they work. travelling on her own when she likely stumbles across the doc + companion.
nate - UNIT captain with terrible commanders who seem to actively want the aliens to kill his platoon, fully begins operating by his own (lawful/neutral good) morals and not by what he's told to protect people, including refusing to fire. definitely leaves UNIT before it's disbanded but still actively ends up at scenes of Shit Happening to help people. might end up working with people who've had their lives displaced by Alien Shit? or even helping non-violent aliens stuck on earth in a very non-torchwood way. he'd hate torchwood.

I've been catching up on Doctor Who for the first time since 2014, and I AM SO UPSET RN. PROBABLY TOO UPSET. PROBABLY PMSing IN FACT, BUT I FEEL LIKE I'M JUSTIFIED IN MY INDIGNATION... Let me explain
Ó╭╮Ò
I ran across a nice piece of DW fanfiction that got me back on the bandwagon, and while I was taking a look around the fandom on AO3, I realized that there are a TON of DoctorxClara shippers. Having absolutely no knowledge of the show past ep 3 of Capaldi's run, I just assumed that people were being horny as usual and put it down to the fact that Clara was single and pretty and fairly likeable as a companion. However, in assuming this, I did not take into account that 2014 me was blissfully unaware of the asexual-tinted lens through which she viewed the world and of the beautiful chemistry that Clara and the Doctor have always had on screen (romantic or not, it's magnetic).
So as I'm watching through series 8, getting to know Danny, I'm thinking, "Okay, yeah, they're gonna end up together and Clara's gonna choose to leave the Doctor so she can have Danny's babies and 12 is gonna be moody about it before moving on."
BUT THEN DEATH IN HEAVEN HAPPENS AND DANNY IS DEAD AND THE DOCTOR IS ANGRY AND GRIEVING AFTER MISSY GAVE HIM FALSE HOPE ABOUT GALLIFREY AND EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE DYING INSIDE THEY LIE AND TELL EACH OTHER THEY'RE HAPPY BECAUSE THEY WANT EACH OTHER TO MOVE ON WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT THE OTHER AND 12 ALLOWS CLARA TO HUG HIM BECAUSE HE NEEDS TO HIDE HIS FACE WHILE HE SAYS GOODBYE AND CLARA REALIZES THAT THIS ONE HUG THAT 12 GIVES HER IS THE ONE HE SHOULDN'T TRUST BECAUSE SHE'S HIDING HER FACE TOO AND THEN THE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL HAPPENS AND THEY BOTH THINK CLARA HAS GROWN OLD AND SHE CASUALLY ADMITS HE'S THE ONLY ONE SHE EVER COULD HAVE LOVED AFTER DANNY 60 YEARS LATER AND DESPITE HATING ENDINGS THE DOCTOR SO OBVIOUSLY REGRETS MISSING THOSE YEARS AND YOU CAN SEE IN HIS EYES THAT HE WANTS TO BE THERE FOR EVERY MOMENT SHE HAS LEFT WOSJSJAJSNWOQOAJABAAAAAAAA
Anyway... I'm not saying I'm a DoctorxClara shipper. I think I prefer them to be platonic. But I am peeved because past me was oblivious af, I went from
"Why in the hell does 12 feel like he needs to clarify that he's not Clara's boyfriend?"
To
"WOSJSJAJSNWOQOAJABAAAAAAAA"
Over the course of series 8, and now I have to go scrub salty mascara off my face.

ok so it's not that deep then yeah? it's just clara there by accident but like... how did they end up on gallifrey anyway??? isn't it? still timelocked? i think i don't get this episode because everything that comes after it with missy giving him the coordinates and danny not making it just seems to contradict it so much???

hii i dont think we´ve ever really talked before but i just wanted to say ive been really enjoying your tags on thoschei posts in the last couple of days!
like this:
#please tell me someone has written a fic focused on missy receiving that and looking for 12#all the way to her deciding to involve Clara#bc ok#I don’t believe she *needed* Clara to find him not really#earth; noise but no threat; a party; she could have figured it out#but that makes it even more interesting bc that means she *chose* to involve Clara#part of it is probably just that she likes her djdjjd#but it’s interesting bc it’s like the master is always torn#bc they want to be the centre of the doctor’s attention with no distractions but the companions....they’re so /useful/ aren’t they#such a lovely stick with which they can push the doctor’s buttons#easy to threaten easy to kill#and back then they didn’t feel threatened by them; bc in the end the master remained the doctor’s only equal —or so they thought#but *now*?? now the master has found out he’s as temporary to the doctor as every single pet she’s ever had? oh ho ho
and this:
#honestly my KINGDOM for an ep that leads a companion to realizing (AND POINTING OUT!!!) how similar they are#I would have Loved for it to be Ryan but I’d love to see Yaz handling that too#they have this fundamental difference in how they perceive the world#but they also grew up together#the two kids who were smarter than everyone else#who skipped classes together and dared each other to do stupid shit and even NOW#THOUSANDS of years and countless civilizations and deaths and lives and who knows what else later#.....it still shows#they still act the same they still react in the same ways they are still in /sync/#which is why a doctor master team up WOULD kill me in every possible way#can you imagine?? the two of them bouncing theories and plans and strategies off of each other#rapid fire and breathless and /grinning/ and lowkey insulting each other but in a teasing *oh so fond* way#they wouldn’t even realize they were doing it#neither of them
this:
#like worth mentioning that as they flirt and trade quips and rapid fire ideas and grins#Bill is RIGHT THERE#after going through the worst year of her life#and slowly coming to the realization that she’s going to have to die to fix this#dw#but these two are just......so absorbed with each other#with the sheer /glee/ of having someone match them match their speed match their intellect#not that I expected missy to be particularly considerate but /12/????#he’s so /caught/ in the simple *fun* of having someone match him and challenge him that he forgets. just for a second.#hc that I’m treating as canon: that’s what it was like back in school for them#it’s what they were like back at the academy#trading insanely fast ideas and concepts in half sentences that were incomprehensible to everyone but them#riding the high of having someone just /understand/ whatever it is you’re getting at without needing long dull explanations
like sorry to quote your own words back to you but im just really enjoying all your thoschei thoughts thanks for them <3
Hi!! First off, apologies for the delayed response, I queued all these posts in a sudden thoschei haze before going off on holiday somewhere with very limited internet access lol, but this was lovely to come back to!! As fun as rambling in Tumblr tags can be, imo the real fun of meta comes from discussing it with people so this is!!! Very exciting!!!!
I’m going to be rambling a bit more below about the different things you bolded bc I will literally take any opportunity to type about these two for hours kjdfhgfd
using a read more bc this got uh. long. whoops!
The Master vs the Doctor’s companions
I could talk for DAYS about this bc it is fascinating to me. Pre TTC, you’ve got the Master’s arrogance coming out in full force when it comes to the companions (very time lord of him btw lol). They’re not threats, not really, even if the Doctor gets attached, bc they are fundamentally temporary.
(imo, that’s part of the reason why they’re so very hateful towards Jack, bc Jack /is/ immortal, and potentially /could/ be a threat; luckily for them, the doctor is always an ass where jack harkness is concerned kjdfghfk)
but yes, since the companions could never be on the Doctor’s level, they’re not a proper threat (it’s the ‘you’re the puppy’ thing Missy says to Clara). but! that does not mean they can’t be useful and/or even fun. The Doctor’s always out there trying to defend/save humans, sure, but with the companions, they’re /attached/, which means it’s even more fun to threaten them, bc it makes it easier to get a reaction out of the Doctor. But I also think sometimes the Master ends up kinda liking the companion? Missy and Clara is number one example in my mind and g o d, I’m not by any means a s8/9 expert but Missy and Clara are so FUN. I could do paragraphs, but instead I will just link my favorite fic involving them (it also involves 12, and bill, in the final chapter, AND it’s in my humble opinion arguably the funniest dw fic on ao3)
But! This is all pre-TTC! Back when the Master could rely on the Doctor being their equal, and, vice versa, on their being the Doctor’s (only) equal; back when the Master still knew that no matter what happened, in the end, it’d be them and the doctor together, just like they’d started.
Except that now the Doctor’s had this whoooole entire life (lives!!!!) before they met the Master. And they will keep having more of those, after the Master. The Master is now /temporary/. The Master is now a companion like any other.
In short: ouch
(As an aside, this is my read on what I believe is the Master’s thought process; imo, in the Doctor’s mind, the Master is still very much apart, regardless of whether you subscribe to that ‘the master is the kid who pushed bby!doctor off that cliff’ theory, but that’s a different essay altogether)
I think it’s fairly interesting, if slightly frustrating when writing fic lol, that we don’t really see the Master interact with the fam, or at least not out of disguise. As O, he’s his usual meddling self; trying to pique Graham’s curiosity about the doctor, messing with Yaz a little… but beyond that, he doesn’t really acknowledge them much. Could be linked to the plot, sure, but to me it also makes sense that he’d be a lot less personal with the companions than, say, Missy was. He v much encourages their being turned into Cybermen (which…. after bill?? dude. like I know it’s on purpose, (and Dhawan!Master vs the vault and Missy’s arc is its own rant) but dude.), but it’s, once more, mostly about upsetting the Doctor, more than about the companions specifically (then again, in TTC, he’s fairly one-track bc he’s revealing everything). All that to say, this is reason n°3453 why I’d like him to make a comeback next series or in the specials; I’m so curious to know whether he’d try to mess with Yaz more specifically, or if his new found ''''companion'''' status would make him Not Want To Do That
The similarities between the Doctor and the Master
This is one of the many, many things that make me go absolutely feral about them. Beyond the Master’s newfound belief that the Doctor is now some kind of god or w/e, the fact remains that these two??? They are so similar that it HURTS.
They of course have this fundamental difference in how they see the world, and have had it for a while (although, despite my abysmal knowledge of classic who, I do attribute this difference at least partly, to the Doctor’s travels with Ian and Barbara, and then generally to the influence their companions have had on them), /but/…. There’s still a reason why they became so close at the Academy, why they clicked together so well, and why they’re still now, thousands of years later, orbiting each other with absolutely no way to pull back. At their core, these two are still the two smart as hell kids who’d trade ideas and thoughts and concepts at a thousand miles a minute, and just be so gleeful that they have someone who can match them, match their speed, and understand exactly what they’re getting at. It also means they were probably insufferable, but let’s be real, they still are, and that’s why we love them.
It’s something we get a pretty good look at in s10, notably in the scene in the monks ep where Missy has 12 guess how the monks work, and it’s one of the many reasons why I adore that series. Bc despite all their history, they still fall back into that rhythm in seconds, and they don’t even notice. A team up with 13 and Dhawan!master would be even more captivating imo, bc they are so hostile. It’d have to be forced by exterior circumstances (and I don’t think even that would exclude 13 decking him at some point or other), but the fact is…. They are Still similar, despite both their beliefs that they’re not, and seeing them fall back into that synchronicity??? Into that back and forth??? My KINGDOM for this, chibs, please.
The funniest part is that they’d BOTH deny it. It’s not like Missy trying to prove that they’re not so different; the Master now also believes they’re no longer alike, but an outside eye like a companion? Like Yaz (aka a companion who has gone from hero worship of the Doctor to having had months to obsess over everything the Doctor has ever done (including possibly the darker things 👀) + being (I think??) a lot more wary of the Doctor (one day you will [leave again]); Yaz would see it, and she’d call it out and for all the Doctor would deny it…. She’d see it too.
This is WAY longer than I expected and I hope it makes some kind of sense (I am not used to having to structure meta thoughts outside of discord messages and Tumblr tags so apologies if this is helplessly rambly jdhgf), but!! It was very fun!! Thank you for the ask and the opportunity!!

clara - okay so like. i’m gay. and she’s really pretty and chaotic. but ALSO i just. i really love how she ended up?? bc there was this running theme of travelling with the doctor makes you Better but like travelling with the doctor really let clara sink deeper into those self destructive ego-maniacal qualities of hers huh

Doctor Who season overviews
My friend is embarking on the wonderful journey of watching of “Doctor Who” and asked me for a rundown of what episodes she absolutely has to watch, my favorites, and ones that can be skipped. I thought I’d share them here in case anyone else was interested. Also I’m curious what anyone else’s thoughts on some must-view episodes.
(Will be updating as my friend reaches each season.)
Series 1
Definitely watch 1 because it’s where everything starts and you start to get a vibe for how the show goes. A fantastic place to start, if you will.
2 is a fun one with a plethora of aliens. If you’ve seen gifs of the Doctor jamming to “Toxic” by Brittany Spears, this is where that’s from.
3 is the first “historical” episode of the revival. Ok episode overall. Has ghosts and a bit an unintentional easter egg for future episodes/series.
4-5 are a bit silly but also I think have some good characterization of the Doctor and why sometimes he needs a friend to keep him in check.
6 introduces you to a classic DW alien so you should watch it.
7 is good to watch because it sort of sets up some stuff for the finale but I also find the guest characters kinda annoying.
8 is good if you want to learn more about Rose and that becomes more important to later stories and the next season.
9-10 is an all around fan favorite (certainly one of mine) and introduces a re-occurring fan favorite character. The reason why gas masks will forever make me uneasy.
11 follows up after the events of 4-5 (all three could be skipped if you want to go along faster).
12-13 are the finale and should be watched.
Series 2
0 (the Christmas special) is the first one with David Tennant as the Doctor, a muse-watch in my books. (Also, some things happen that become very important in later stories but I won’t say more because spoilers.) Introduces a new important character and re-introduces something
1 has cat people.
2 is a fun one and has an easter egg of sorts for future stories/characters but isn't necessary for major plot line. It’s one of the ones I like to rewatch.
3 sees the return of an old fan favorite companion from Old Who (before this still ongoing revival).
4 is skippable unless you like some fancy French aesthetic or are into automatons.
5-6 you should watch. Re-introduction of another classic Who monster.
7 is kinda weird.
8-9 are a good, kinda creepy story. Sees the introduction of the Ood, which are one of my dad’s personal favorites, who will also pop up later.
10 is literally one of the dumbest eps ever.
11 I literally don’t remember at all but the internet tells me it involves a small child, and Doctor Who does have some good, creepy episodes playing on stereotypical childhood fears.
12-13 are the two part finale so you definitely have to watch those. Prepare for some serious emotions, though.
Series 3
0 (Christmas special) introduces Donna Noble. Must watch, but I won’t say why.
1 introduces the new companion. Also introduces a kind of goofy alien that will pop up again.
2 is a fun one with Shakespeare and witches.
3 sees a return to New New York on New Earth (same setting as 2x01). Should watch because of [spoilers redacted] at the end. (Hint: think of who mysteriously disappeared in that previous episode.)
4-5, as the titles suggest, feature Daleks and imo all Dalek episodes should be watched.
6 is ok. Honestly kind of predictable plot-line.
7 is also ok. Not particularly memorable, but it is the first episode written by Chris Chibnall, who took over as show-runner for Series 11 (first season with Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor).
8-9 is a two-parter and is a fan and personal favorite.
10 is unusual because the main characters are not actually the Doctor and Martha, but this is another much-loved episode. Also introduces one of my favorite and most scary (imo) aliens.
11, 12, and 13 all kind of go together. Sees the re-introduction of an important character from the show’s original run. All pretty memorable and Martha is a total badass.
Series 4 (tl;dr: watch all of this series)
0 (Christmas special; you get the drill) is a good one. Sometimes there are episodes where the Doctor meets someone where you just know they’d be a fantastic companion.
1 is a must-see because [spoilers redacted].
2 is another must-see. It’s a solid episode of Who, is yet another good example of why the Doctor shouldn’t travel alone, and as a fun fact, we see two actors who will pop up in later series.
3, as the title implies, sees the return of the Ood! Watch this for some foreshadowing.
4-5 we see a new-to-New-Who alien who is another one that will come to pop up again over time. Honestly the plot and guest characters follow some predictable tropes BUT we also get to see some of [redacted]’s family, which is always good fun.
6 I think is only an okay episode. But meeting the “Doctor’s daughter” (not a spoilers bc its the episode title) is kinda fun. And I think it gives us some interesting insight into companions post their travels with the Doctor.
Also, weird DW fun fact: David Tennant and the actress who plays his daughter is the real-life daughter of actor Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor back in Classic Who, are now married with kids.
7 isn’t integral to any major plot lines, but it’s no doubt a fun one, especially if you like murder mysteries or Agatha Christie.
8-9 are another must-see two fan and personal favorites for many reasons why, but I can’t go into because spoilers! Some good spooky eps that are really downright chilling at times, but not completely without some good comic bits. Love watching this with friends who are watching it for the first time.
10 does an excellent job of being creepy, which is good if you’re into it, but you can skip it if not.
11 is a good one with a timey-wimey plot. Also yay because [spoilers]!
12-13 are an excellent two-part series finale and that’s all I can say.
The Specials (mini series between Series 4 & 5)
1 is good if you like Cybermen
2 has a spunky one-off companion who is a lot of fun
3 is creepy af
4-5 are a must-watch two-parter. If you liked the Series 4 finale (and let’s be real, how could you not), you’ll enjoy this. Also, it’s the last episodes with Russel T. Davies as show-runner.
Series 5
1 introduces the new Eleventh Doctor and their companion, so definitely have to watch that. (Side note: fish fingers and custard is a weird combination but, speaking from personal experience, it’s not terrible.)
2 is a good one with debatable ethical questions and some good insight into the Doctor.
3 is another Dalek episode, but it’s only okay as far as Dalek episodes go. It’s a historical one, if you like those. Fun fact: it’s written by Mark Gatiss, a collaborator of new show-runner Stephen Moffat and guest star from “The Lazarus Experiment.”
4-5 you have to see because spoilers. But it’s very good. Also, has some plot points that are related to the overall story of the Ponds.
6 you get the gist from the title and honestly it’s not terribly exciting. Some fun bits about the new group’s dynamic.
7 is a pretty weird one tbh but should be watched we get companion character development.
8-9 introduces some fun characters that will pop up again every now and then and has a very important plot point. (Fun fact: this one takes place in the year 2020!)
10 is one of the more emotionally-driven episodes and deals with mental health. One of many fan favorites.
11 is lighter fanfare after some honestly pretty heavy episodes that precede it. Not really important to the overall plot, but it’s a fun comedic one.
12-13 are the finale, so obviously definitely watch that. Gets a little timey-wimey.
Series 6
0 is fine, as the Christmas specials go. I’m a little tired of the “man makes it his purpose in life to save his dying love who is kind of helpless in her own story” but the ending’s alright.
1-2 set the stage for the whole series, so those have to be watched.
3 has pirates, which is fun but not necessary to the main story line.
4 has such an intriguing title, so how could you not watch it? Will we finally find out if River and the Doctor are married? Spoilers.
5-6 are key plot points. Love a good doppelgänger.
7 follows immediately after 6, so I can’t say much about it.
8 is a pretty weird one but hold on to your butts for a wild ride.
9 is a properly spooky one. Like, actually low-key terrifying. But not related to the main plot line.
10 is emotionally painful but in a good way.
11 is another creepy one that plays on common fears. Inspired by some Greek mythology, which is fun.
12-13 are the two-part finale, so you know the drill.
Series 7, part I
0 is another only-okay Christmas special. They’re just not as fun as they once were, in my opinion.
1 you have to watch for plot reasons. It’s a good one because [spoilers redacted].
2 is pretty much what it sounds like. We are now also accompanied by Rory’s father, which is pretty amusing. Sees the return of a previously-met alien species. (Fun fact: one of the guest stars is David Bradley from, among other things, the Harry Potter movies.)
3 has some fun moral quandaries.
4 is fun because we see the Doctor having a go at normal Earth life, as well as thee return of some familiar arguably badass faces.
5 is a must-see for plot reasons (and the return of one of my favorite on-again-off-again companions).
Series 7, part II (don’t read below if you haven’t finished part I)
5.5 you have to watch and is a sort of mid-season Christmas special. Sees the return of an Old Who monster as well as several New Who faces.
6 follows up the events of the above special, so you have to see that, too.
7 is good because gives some backstory to Clara.
8 sees the return of another Old Who alien, whose species will pop up later in New Who. I didn’t particularly like nor dislike this one.
9 is a ghost story, which we haven’t really seen in Who for a while. It’s ok.
10 is also only ok but you should watch it for overall plot points.
11 we see the return of the Paternoster Gang, who I find quite amusing, but otherwise I didn’t really like this episode. It’s a little gross.
12 is written by Neil Gaiman so you should watch it. It’s also only fine, but better in my opinion than most of the other episodes in this part of the series.
13 is the series finale and has a rather intriguing title and wraps up this half of the series’ major story arc. Honestly I’m not a fan but you should watch it anyway.
Series 8
1 sees the return of the Paternoster Gang and more dinosaurs, but is also the first episode of the new Doctor and as such should be watched. Also have to keep an eye out at the end for some important scenes.
2 introduces a friend of Clara’s and reintroduces the Daleks but with a bit of a weird twist. Not super key to any main plot lines.
3 is pretty much what the title says it is. “Robot of Sherwood.” It’s meh.
4 is a little timey-wimey and develops some intercharacter relationships but overall isn’t exactly mandatory viewing.
5 is a robbery heist with some sci-fi twists. It’s alright.
In 6 we see Clara trying (and failing) to compartmentalize her life with the Doctor and her regular human on Earth life. It’s decent and there’s a snippet at the end that hints at some overarching plots.
7 tries to make some arguments about ethics but isn’t too convincing. The plot’s kinda fun, though.
8 is another one where the title, “Mummy on the Orient Express” pretty much sums it up. It does have a couple small throwbacks to older New Who seasons.
9 isn’t key to major plot lines but it’s a decent and kind of spooky episode.
10′s kinda dumb but has some weak environmental messaging.
11-12 wrap up the season’s major plot lines.
Series 9
0 is like a Christmas-themed reworking of a previous episode but I won’t say which one because spoilers.
1-2 are a pretty strong two-part season opener, I think. We see the return of some of the Doctor’s oldest friends/enemies.
3-4 are a properly timey-wimey, fairly creepy story. It’s a good one that honestly I wouldn’t want to watch by myself late at night with the house to myself.
5-6 are also timey-wimey AND introduce a character played by Maisie Williams (of “Game of Thrones” fame) who is actually pretty complex for a female character created by Stephen Moffat.
7-8 sees the return of, no surprise here, the Zygones. And also UNIT and Osgood, who is fan service personified but I’m ok with that.
9, in a way, is about the evils of capitalism but in space!
10 is important for plot. (Sees the return of some new old friends.)
11-12 has some good timey-wimeyness and a healthy dose of angst. (Also, the ending is gay and you can’t convince me otherwise.) It’s frustrating, but in an understandable way? I guess?

Can You Hear Me?
It’s trauma time, kids!
a cold open? In my Chibnall’s DW?
Tahira: some people?? steal?? to cope??
I want to say Aleppo is looking a bit white but I also don’t know the actors and they may well be of Middle Eastern origin
(ok I looked them up - Tahira is Kazakh and Maryam is Lebanese)
still don't quite understand why they're staying away for so much time
though I guess maybe pretending they're off working/travelling is easier than trying to maintain two lives
"stops me getting stuck in the past" cut to 13, arriving in the past, presumably to get stuck
(alas she did not, wasted joke tbh)
Thirteen unable to switch out of tour guide mode really shows how she doesn't do much actual travelling without the fam
oh I hadn't expected the monsters to be.....furry? monkey-like?
ooh is this the Yaz secret stuff they were teasing
nothing like a bit of creepily looking at your hand
wait noooo the fingers
nooo I don’t like this
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REST OF THE DETACHED FINGERS
ONLY ONE WENT IN HIS EAR WHERE DID THE OTHERS GO
Thirteen: *meets someone* RIGHT it’s time to take you into the TARDIS
this is all definitely a trap of some sort
mysterious spaceship in the distant universe? DEFINITELY a trap
Thirteen: *zooms in* woah! *zooms in more* WOAH!
"we waited for you" Ryan’s nightmare feels very Amy and Rory
ok I'm glad they haven't completely ignored the trauma that Orphan 55 would have caused
Grace!
Grace :'(
"Helleou Daukter"
knew it was a trap
I like the stylistic switch to mythical storytelling
I feel as thought the Doctor’s nightmare could have been a bit...more??
but on the other hand they’ve basically lived every possible nightmare
and the Timeless Child is something that remains unknown
"good dog"
"prank?"
"I think the motivational speech needs some work, Doc"
scaring kids in their bedrooms to power your existence? that’s very Monsters Inc. of you
Rakaya: are you confronting us? Thirteen, practically leaning out of the screen: yeah
it looks as though Tahira 🎵 faced her fears  🎵
so....how many people were having their nightmares harvested? how many people went in the TARDIS?
did Thirteen do any more memory wipes?
I’m glad they've brought back Yaz's past of being bullied and it wasn’t just a throwaway line that was never built on
it's just a shame we're getting this good character stuff so late in
like we’re nearly at the end of their second series but are only just finding out about Yaz’s past like this
it’s something big that would have really been useful in interpreting and understanding her arc up until now
I loved Graham’s chat to the Doc but kinda wish she'd had a better response
again, I’m sure this is all intentional writing showing that the Doctor is not forming proper connections with these companions
but we’ve had to sacrifice some of the richness of the companion characterisations to get this story
we don’t really get to learn about the characters via their specific relationships with the Doctor because that relationship isn’t there
it kinda reminds me of s7b Clara
sure the whole point was that she was a ~mystery~ but it doesn’t make for compelling character storytelling
this isn’t as bad as that but at least s7b made it clear that there was some sort of intent
"the Doctor can drop you off whenever you want" "but we'll have changed and they won't have. it's like we're living at different rates" good stuff
that last look between them said a lot, I’m sure there’s a good comparison to when they were first starting and all excited
when they leave I really hope they get to leave on their own terms
The big news about next week’s ep is, of course, the return of Thirteen in a waistcoat.
