Daily fish fact #479
Dwarf pufferfish!
Tumblr media
Also called a pea puffer or a pygmy puffer, their names reference their very small size: the maximum size that the species reaches is 3.5 cm (1.4 inches)! Unlike other pufferfish, the juvenile individuals of this species enjoy socialising and living in shoals in the wild.

I told myself I wouldn’t start up any aquariums until I reached a certain threshold for commissions or found a part time job, because I at least must present the facade of a functioning and responsible adult. Dangle that carrot for my little gremlin brain.
But I keep thinking about the fish and plants and tanks I saw on my grand tour of LFS’s yesterday and hnnnng. Luckily all the good shops are difficult or impossible to reach via public transit, which should keep me from committing any impulse purchases.

not the best pics but i was finally able to see my pea puffer after clearing out the dwarf water lettuce that took over the tank. he's the cutest thing ever - only about the size of the tip of my pinky and taking on snails twice his size. i decided his name is munch.

Stocking ideas for my tanks
I have a 40 gallon community tank
6 honey gourami
10-13 glowlight tetras
6 kuhli loachs
6 honey gourami
1 bristlenose pleco
I own three other tanks, however.
×2 20 gallon tall
×1 5.5 gallon
Ideas:
Move half the honey gourami to one of the 20 gallon and give them a bottom feeder to keep them company. A nerite snail or a few kuhli loaches
20 gallon with 1 betta and a snail. Very extravagant and low bioload so it'd be extremely easy to care for
20 gallon with a pea puffer or 2. I could add kuhli loaches from the big tank to that tank so if the puffers reject their roommates I can just throw em back in their original tank
5 gallon 1 pea puffer. I'm not entirely sure if this is a good idea I've gotten very mixed reviews if this is safe or not. Plus, the parameters could suck even more since pea puffers are supposed to be messy eaters
20 gallon tall nerite snail(s) and 3-5 african dwarf frogs. Only problem is, I think it might be too tall for the adfs.
Split the inhabitants of the community tank into my 2 20s so I can spoil an axolotl. I'm not actually gonna do this one, period. I'm not ready for an axolotl and I'm not gonna put my princess Turd, my bristlenose pleco, in a 20 gallon. It's a nice thought though.

🐟 Fishuary 2024 Day Seven: Blowfish/Pufferfish 🐟
Tumblr media
This fish was rather easy to pick (and easy to draw), the dwarf pufferfish, also known as a pea puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus)! They're efficient predators, but it also sometimes looks like they have elevator music playing in their head... @fish-daily

(Actually) Hidden
Puddle is this week’s resident of the bedside tank. Madame went back to the 25 cube with the shoal. Puddle spends most of their time alone and hiding anyway, so this might be a better fit.
Would not wanna be that shrimp.

Current scapes I'm working on right now. Top is a 55gal for blackwater fish (the wood colored the water, this wasn't really intentional but appropriate considering what I'm planning to house) which currently houses 3 Celestial Danios, 3 Green Neon Tetras, 2 trapdoor snails --- obv nowhere near done... I have more plants coming and it's NOT ready for more critters (the nitrogen cycle seems to be incomplete even though it's probably a month old, I guess there's some logic to a full cycle taking around two months... I'm not adding more fish till the nitrates drop).
Bottom tank is a 10gal which contains 3 dwarf pea puffers and 2 nerite snails (which have been hiding in the corners). This might be fairly close to done - I will probably add more plants eventually, and there's little in the way of hardscape, but since hopefully I have two females and one male this should be ok (they seem to be getting along fine)... and since they're extremely aggressive, likely nothing else will be going in here... unless I decide to try out a pleco in there.
Tumblr media
My 20gal is done. I pulled one plant out to transfer into the puffer tank and then pulled pups off the Fern to put in that place. This tank currently houses: 8 endlers (2 adults, 6 babies), 5 corydoras, 1 pleco, 1 assassin snail, and 6 shrimp (the most recent addition). Everyone seems to be doing fine, the shrimp are still settling in.

You: “A tank that weird looking was probably really expensive, huh?”
Me: “...Yep, it sure was.”
You: “Seems kind of form over function. Like, it’s cool that you can have a clear view from the top, but there’s only a tiny hole at the top. It has to be an absolute pain in the ass to do any work in there.”
Me: “It is ridiculously annoying, yes.”
You: “At least you only have to set everything in the tank up once?”
Me: “Oh, no, I do a total revamp every few months and rearrange the entire goddamn thing. Just did it today. Took 4.5 hours and got dirty water on all of me. By the end there was more dirty water on me than there was in the aquarium to begin with, somehow. It was truly unpleasant. But, you know, a change of scenery is good enrichment for the fish.”
You: “... so how many fish do you have in there?”
Me: “1.”
You: “Is it at least a BIG fish?”
Me: “Funny you should ask! It’s a single dwarf pea puffer! He’s ridiculously tiny! He also happens to be wildly aggressive, so I can only have one fish in that tank!”
You: “Is he easy to take care of?”
Me: “Haha, no, he only eats live food! Not even frozen or freeze dried, he wants the kill! He’ll settle for bloodworms but his whole fucking jam is snails, so I had to buy a special tool to scrape pest bladder snails off the glass of my other aquariums with, and then I have to dump them in his tank and watch him methodically murder them. He is incredibly efficient at sucking their unsuspecting bodies right out of their shell in one incredibly fast tactical strike.”
You: “Well, you must really, uh, love that fish?”
Me: “Hm? Oh, yeah, the fish. I guess hes fine.”
You: “Then why the hell would you even have such a ridiculous setup-“
Me, clutching your shirt collar, breathing very loudly, eyes filled with the anguish that only someone who has seen their favorite aquarium plants eaten alive can ever know: “Because I fucking. hate. bladder. snails.”
