This is not really a ship ask per se just the sokka/suki/mai/ty-lee polycule how do you think it would work? I think their dates are mix of sharp objects, sparring and sparkling conversation. The relationship equivalent of a heist movie (and I guess zukos at kiddie table or something. Guy in the polycule who is just there)
LMFAOOO zuko is like eric andre banging at the gates yelling LET ME INNNN but alas he lacks the spirit and charm to join. he doesn’t even really want to be a part of it either (beautiful women do not actually interest him), he just feels excluded and resentful because it’s unfair that sokka (his favorite special guy) is closer to mai and ty lee (his only peers he ever spoke to until he was 17 years of age) than he is, and also he just generally refuses to understand why suki gets nice things (ie, sokka) and he doesn’t. unfortunately he has just enough self-knowledge to acknowledge that it’s a flaw he possesses rather than projecting that resentment outwards, so he is kind of just sitting there pathetically. alas. many such cases.
as for the group dynamic itself, i think that sokka and suki are a concrete couple, and mai and ty lee are also a discrete coupling, but then suki and ty lee are also together, and occasionally suki and mai also hook up, and sometimes suki mai and ty lee are just a throuple, but then sometimes sokka is also involved, but he’s also usually off doing his own thing so he’s not as present, but don’t get it twisted, he IS there and he’s in this relationship. he’s in this relationship.
Tumblr media
it starts because obviously sokka and suki are already a couple and madly in love, and then they befriend mai and ty lee once the war ends. ty lee of course being a kyoshi warrior, so suki ends up spending a lot of time with her showing her the ropes, and also learning chi-blocking from her. suki is obviously just smitten with ty lee almost immediately because she is so talented and beautiful and charming, but also resents ty lee for this fact because she is too proud to admit that ty lee is a better fighter and smarter than she is, but eventually is able to admit her feelings for ty lee much in the same way that she did with sokka.
so suki gets together with ty lee while they’re on kyoshi island together, and concurrently sokka and mai are getting closer in the fire nation babysitting zuko and they very quickly realize that they actually get along really well because they surprisingly have a lot in common and share a sense of humor and love being miserable little haters together. and even though they both hate being in the fire nation, their newfound friendship becomes a consistent source of joy for each of them, and toph included, they are basically inseparable. everyone kind of assumes they’re dating because they truly do spend every second of the day together, but they’re not. or well, it’s more complicated/weirder than that.
when sokka and mai go to visit suki and ty lee on kyoshi island, or suki and ty lee come back to the fire nation (whichever comes first), sokka is already aware that suki and ty lee have gotten together because suki told him about her feelings before she left and then wrote to him about all their developments as they were occurring. and sokka is supportive, but he also finds it kind of strange because he distinctly remembers ty lee as being someone who was constantly flirting with him, and he wonders how them sharing a girlfriend will change that dynamic. but it doesn’t really. ty lee continues to flirt with him. at first it actually makes him so uncomfortable that he thinks he’s gonna throw up, because he’s being besieged on all sides (ie, suki has joined in the incessant flirting, mai is kind of just sitting there wearing this inscrutable yet distinctly infuriating expression) but eventually he just adjusts to this group dynamic.
sokka and suki are actually the ones to get mai and ty lee to finally get their shit together though. suki persuades ty lee that mai has feelings for her while sokka persuades mai that ty lee has feelings for her. and they feel like very helpful samaritans of the world they are so proud of themselves when mai and ty lee finally do get together. they’ve been dancing around their feelings ever since the boiling rock and kept insisting that it “just isn’t the right time” because mai was figuring out her shit with zuko and ty lee was moving to kyoshi island and blah blah blah. but suki’s just like “ARGH I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!” and smushes their faces together basically.
as for mai and suki, they first bond over being evenly matched in pai sho. ty lee and sokka are both geniuses who win every game effortlessly, and suki and mai (who both pride themselves on being highly intelligent) get fed up with getting their asses kicked so they start their own pai sho tournament, no ty lees and sokkas allowed. (fyi: we do actually see them playing pai sho together in ba sing se in the finale, which I think is very cute.) pai sho can be a very erotic game depending on how you play it (iroh can attest to this) so mai and suki, as well as ty lee and sokka, greatly enjoy these battles of wit, and get closer as a result. (yet another reason why zuko isn’t invited into the polycule; he sucks at pai sho.)
all that said, I do think toph is also heavily involved in this group dynamic, albeit not romantically, but she’s obviously sokka’s best friend and also very important to mai, so she kind of just hangs around because sokka, mai, and toph are also just their own little trio. but when it is just the four of them, it is truly the four scariest nonbenders in the world participating in this vaguely polyamorous dyke squad telling the most fucked up jokes you have ever heard in your life and laughing their asses off, and they are all gorgeous gorgeous girls who seem highly threatening to anyone on the outside looking in, but are actually very silly and goofy and and dedicate way too much of their time to playing board games. beautiful dynamic I think
(also, just as a sidenote for anyone wondering about whether they’re lesbians or what, that reddit post about being “gay both ways” is sokka’s gender. to me)
Tumblr media
[ID: Reddit post by rrien in the thread r/bisexual with the title “Anyone “gay both ways”?”
The body reads: “I used to know this he/they bi guy, who presented himself as a pretty androgynous trans dude.
When he dated guys, he was a man getting with a gay man. When he dated women, it was like a lesbian relationship. He was comfortable and perceived as a dude in gay male spaces, and was equally comfortable and perceived as a butch in lesbian spaces. I think about this a lot. Dude was playing 5D chess with gender.
Has anyone else encountered this? As someone who’s uncomfortable in hetero relationship dynamics and who strives for androgyny….I just think it’s neat.” /end ID]

Hmmm, how about an Hiei x S/O or his crush headcannons? Which the S/O who's a goober, like a sweet and adorable and a very romantic one (overdramatic one...) And like thinking that the S/O is like tall (like I guess 5'10 or smth idk 😅) and he's a smol angry demon man like he doesn't know why he dated/developed feelings for a human that's like this but secretly loves them (I just love the opposite attract and tall and small dynamics xD)
oooooh i love this idea!! i decided to do both (starts off as a crush then he becomes a lover) and ngl i kind of took the enemies to lovers route with this one since i feel like it fits his character more. i also decided to go with the "goofy but very strong character" trope with the s/o because honestly? why not lol.
i surprisingly had a lot of fun writing this and it got longer than expected, he's a little ooc in some parts but eh it's not that big of a deal tbh.
tw: injuries, reader almost dies at one point, brief mention of reader having trauma,
Tumblr media
lets be real, hiei found you annoying at first, not as annoying as kuwabara but damn near close.
when you were going to fight he didn't have much hope in you, you would probably die in under a second knowing your nature, but as soon as you put in work it almost made his jaw drop.
how he developed feelings for you was at that very moment, he doesn't realize it until much later.
the way his stomach gets this thing called "butterflies" when he's near you, he doesn't move away or threaten you when you get near or touch him (he did at first threatening to rip your arm off) but then he can't help but grow hot... uncomfortably hot.
he's thinking you put him under some type of spell, why does he feel this way? especially over a human? sure, you show courage, sure, you fight well, but guaranteed that there are others who do as well...
but then he comes to the realization, he's never met a demon that has ever made him feel this way.
and a certain red head can see right through it.
kurama eventually asks hiei if something is wrong, but hiei states that he's fine, it takes a bit of time to convince the fire demon to come clean, that something is wrong with him, whilst he was ranting, kurama was listening.. and then he came to the realization.. hiei had a crush on you.
when kurama tells him, he denies it, saying that you were just some annoying human, and that he doesn't have crushes or has the time for a relationship, but kurama knows all of that is a lie, he likes you, and him denying everything just makes things worse.
it was made very clear that this information was kept between the two demons, and eventually, hiei would have to tell you.
some time passes by and you manage to get into a scuffle, you end up injured and hiei comes to the rescue, but tells you not to think of it too deeply.
you don't say anything, but hiei has been acting strange, it's gotten to the point where yusuke and kazuma notice, but don't say a word, it's even weirder when it's just the two of you, he's a lot more.. quiet, and noticeably kinder to you, he doesn't insult you as much anymore, other than that, things remain the same.
while your tidying up your wounds you still managed to keep a smile on your face and a sense of humor, going as far as to make fun of your loss.
hiei would've called you an idiot and told you to shut up, but he can't bring himself to do it somehow, the way you talk, your laugh, your smile, the butterflies get stronger and the blush on his cheeks start to grow darker.
damn... what's with this woman?? why is she so... so....?
it would take so much of his ego and pride to just man up and admit that he likes you, he's not good with words unless it's telling people off (he gets better with this, i promise).
eventually, you got into another fight, and your opponent was tough, so tough in fact you almost die fighting, and you ended up passing out for hours upon hours, the team thought you would die.
hiei put on his cold front as usual, but on the inside he's panicking, he can't lose you, not right now at least.
when it's just him in the infirmary, he looks down at your unconscious body feeling the urge to shed a tear, your happiness is... gone, staring down at nothing but a blank face.
he hoped that you didn't die, he made sure that when you wake up, he'll tell you that he likes you... though it's easier said than done, it'll still take a lot out of him.
eventually he gets in a vulnerable state, kurama yet again see's him, noticing that he's shaking, sitting in the grass at the edge of a cliff, staring into the sunset.
they talk for a while, kurama eventually convinces him that if he can't just flat out tell her, he could just write her a note, and even better, give her a gift.
but what would she even like?
he heard in passing with your talk with his sister, yukina, that you really liked cupcakes (im sorry if you don't like cupcakes just try to imagine it's like some other desert), so, he gets some cupcakes.. from somewhere... somehow... and writes you a letter about how he wants you to be his mate.
and when you say yes.. you're locked in.. forever.
eventually you do wake up, find the cupcake next to the table and eat it, noticing the note and reading over it, it comes to you almost as a shock... hiei? likes you? no way, this has to be some type of elaborate prank.
you do end up seeing hiei, who can't even look at your face, i mean you have to admit.. he's cute, a cute little short guy, while you're taller than him by some inches, he doesn't seem to mind this, he knows he's stronger than you, height doesn't mean jack shit to him.
and so, you accept his request, and now, the two of you are officially dating! or at least that's what you think and he wants.
at first, nothing changes, he's still a tad bit nervous around you, he ordered that there should be no pda in front of the team, he's not ready to tell everyone yet.
when you two are alone, he still had barriers up, not feeling the most comfortable with you yet, the two of you talk and get to know each other, realizing that the reason you were the way you were was because of your trauma, so you masked it with humor.
it takes a while for the two of you to be more intimate (not sexual), holding hangs, hugging, kissing, of course when there wasn't anyone around.
the only person he trusts in regards of knowing about the relationship is kurama and mukuro, no one else.
it takes him a bit to admit that he definitely loves his s/o, and you might've been one of the best things that has happened to him.

my favorite book to show changes in Shelter
*obviously spoilers for the first season of Shelter, as well as the trilogy, though I will be putting anything that relates to plots they may do in later possible seasons below a cut.
The Friendship Group - I really, really like the way they updated the friendship dynamics for the show. This is probably my absolute favorite change. In the books, Ema & Mickey are very much besties and the center of the story, while Spoon often feels like an addition, and Rachel doesn't have much content. While they do technically end up as a group by the end, there are very few scenes with the 4 of them and the main dynamic focused on is Mickey & Ema's.
Shira Bolitar - in the books, Mickey goes to live with his uncle Myron, and Shira doesn't exist. Myron is fine in the books (and he clearly exists in the show, even though we don't meet him), but I like the added focus on Shira (and Hannah, who also isn't a character in the books). They do give Shira some of Myron's material from the books, but she also has a lot of new stuff for the show. I guess some audiences might not think her added material is necessary, but I liked her being a more fleshed out character (I mean, Myron has his own books, which I haven't read, so he's probably very fleshed out in those, but he doesn't have much going on in these books).
Spoon - I think they nailed Spoons characterization, like he feels very much like his book counterpart (aside from a couple of repeated jokes/comments in the books that I didn't love and I'm glad that they didn't use in the show), but there's so much more of him in the show. He honestly does not have enough scenes in the books. I'm glad they recognized his potential in the show.
Dylan Shakes (spelled Shaykes in the books) - This one isn't that big of a deal, but I like that they threaded that mystery into the main plot of the show. This character has a (less fleshed out) very similar plot in the books, but it's very background and his disappearance doesn't feel that important to the town.
Ema's Romantic Arc - Whitney doesn't exist in the books. Ema has other stuff going on romantically in the books, I'll go a little more into this in the more spoilery section of the post.
One thing I think the books did better than the show is that Ashley and Mickey know each other for several weeks before she goes missing, as opposed to literally one day. While I understand that the show addresses that there's some transference going on with Mickey and his desire to save Ashley when he couldn't save his father, his fixation feels weirder in the show than in the books, where he'd gotten to know her a little bit better and they were tentatively dating.
*****spoilers for some book plots that could come into play in additional seasons of the show below!!*****
Ema & Mickey - Okay, honestly, this is a big one for me. It could be because I watched the show first and had that dynamic in my head going into the books, but I was very much not a fan of Ema & Mickey's feelings for each other in the books. While they never actually get together (unless he's going to write more?), we get confirmation that they both have feelings for each other and both know it. I don't know. This just didn't work for me. Maybe, partially, because Mickey spends a lot of the books being jealous whenever Troy & Rachel are brought up, but then will flip into being jealous about Ema liking someone else and back and forth so much. It might be realistic (since Mickey is mainly just like distracted by how hot he thinks Rachel is a lot), but it kind of taints the vibe of "Ema & Mickey are so emotionally connected and their bond is so deep" that it feels like we're supposed to believe at times. IDK. I very much prefer their friendship in the show.
Rachel - Show Rachel is so superior to the book version of Rachel. And it's not that book!Rachel is bad, it's just that she really doesn't get much time on the page, despite being central to the second book mystery, which basically revolves around her family dynamics. While her season 1 plot is pretty similar to her book 1 plot, that's about all the action we really see out of her in the books, and I think that the show did a great job increasing her presence and agency.

hello!! im sure youve gotten this question before but im having a Harry Moment and want to get Even Weirder about it SO !! i was wondering if you have a recommendation for approaching the original comics, where to start, which runs you think are the best reads for capturing his story, stuff like that!! your blogs a joy to browse, thanks so much!!!
Hello fellow Harold enthusiast!! I have in fact gotten this question before but I'm actually quite happy to receive it again as I've long been meaning to create a Harry reading list that would (hopefully) allow people to follow his entire story up to his death
In this chronological guide I've attempted to capture Harry's journey as a character, narrowed down from my own 616 reading experience.
I tried to stay focused on Harry-centric storylines and issues, but I couldn't resist adding some casual appearances particularly during the Silver Age because 1) I think of it as foundational to just about everything that matters in Spider-Man comics and 2) Harry-centric storylines tend to show him at his most distressed. They're important and often brilliant, but reading only those issues feels like a disservice to his kind and loving qualities. It's important to experience the smaller, calmer moments with him as well to truly understand his character.
Personal favorites are bolded, if you care for my bias.
Due to the numerous Spider-Man mags that were at times running simultaneously and ping-ponging storylines between one another, titles will be abbreviated as follows;
The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) = TASM63
The Spectacular Spider-Man (1976) = TSSM76
Web of Spider-Man (1985) = WOSM85
Now let's get into it!
Harry Osborn Reading List
Flashbacks
These were published more recently, but take place before Harry's first appearance in the comics
Short about Harry's childhood and Norman's failings as a father. One of the best depictions of their relationship, in my opinion
Nice Things from Amazing Spider-Man Extra! #3
Gwen-centric miniseries set during her time in high school and giving some insight on her and Harry's longlasting friendship
Giant Size Gwen Stacy
From introduction to deathbed
Watch Harry evolve from goofy background character to Peter's most important narrative foil!
First establishing of Harry's character and his dynamics with other key personages such as Peter and Norman
TASM63 #31, #34, #39, #40
Further development of all aforementioned things. The highs and lows of Peter and Harry's life as roommates. Daddy issues. Romantic drama. Drug addiction subplot. Anything you could ask
TASM63 #46, #47, #53, #54, #57, #59, #60, #61, #62, #63, #66, #74, #82, #95, #96, #98, #105, #110, #118
The storyline that changed everything
TASM63 #119, #120, #121, #122
Harry grows increasingly suspicious and paranoid around Peter following his father's death
TASM63 #123, #124, #126, #127, #129, #134, #135
Now... here's a disclaimer for the following issues: Despite the aforementioned buildup being very well executed, the result is not exactly so and has more to do with giving the Goblin as a concept another hurrah, rather than delving into Harry's character. In fact I'd even argue they're out of character for Harry, as his behavior in them is just cartoonishly diabolical and in stark contrast to both his previously established personality and subsequent depictions of his Goblin. So yeah, these issues are technically important to the grander picture of what is happening with Harry and why, but don't expect insight lol
TASM63 #136, #137
Harry's back and his friends are more than happy to welcome him. He even moves in with Flash
TASM63 #151, #152, #153
Harry and Liz Allan enter a romance and quickly move on to engagement. He is also seen seeking psychiatric treatment
TASM63 #156, #157, #163, #166, #167
The happiness was not to last: Liz' stepbrother, Mark Raxton aka the Molten Man stirs up trouble, and she leaves the city in the aftermath. Harry seeks fault within himself and appears to be on his way to going green again – but is all as it seems?
TASM63 #172, #173, #174, #175, #179, #180
Harry and Liz have settled into the suburbs. In come more Molten Man and more insecurities!
TSSM76 #63
A mysterious foe known as the Hobgoblin has been attacking the company Harry inherited from his father and even blackmailing him with Norman's secret identity. During this troubled time, Liz and Harry are also having a baby
TASM63 #239, #244, TSSM76 #85, TASM63 #249, #250, #251, #260, #261, #263, TSSM76 #146, WOSM85 #47, TASM63 #312, TSSM76 #147
Molten Man, take three – this time with a wholesome twist
WOSM85 #61, #62
Harry briefly attempts to turn the Green Goblin into a superhero
WOSM85 #66, #67
The final Green Goblin Jr Saga – an absolute Must Read. If I could recommend just one Harry storyline, it would definitely be this one
TSSM76 #178, #179, #180, #181, #182, #183, #184, #189, #200
Post OMD Revival/"Clone Harry"
Full disclosure, I don't read much Post OMD Spider-Man. One day I might venture into it despite my gripes and add more to this section. Until then: I'd sort of be amiss not to include these two at the very least in a Harry Osborn reading list, even if recent nonsensical twists have revealed Post OMD Harry to have been a clone all along
Harry and Peter's reunion
Amazing Spider-Man Family #4
Harry cutting ties with his father. While I think this story could have been improved in numerous ways, watching Harry leave Norman behind is still pretty satisfying and I enjoy the way his relationship with Peter is portrayed in this
TASM63 #595, #596, #597, #598, #599

I've seen a lot of people speculating why Alastor was so immediately pissed off at Lucifer. Some people think that Licifer reminds Alastor of his dad, so he was uncomfortable with him on principle. Others think that Alastor and Lilith have a deal, or were in contact with each other, and Lilith convinced Alastor to dislike Lucifer. Some believe that Alastor is egotistical and was upset at Lucifer immediately dismissing him.
Me personally?
Well I think that scene is an example of Hazbin's biggest flaws.
I've noticed that Hazbin has this problem of putting the cart before the horse, so to speak. I honestly think Hazbin works better when you rewatch the show, with the knowledge of future events. And not in a good, not in a "oh I understand this character's motivation now!" Kind of way.
Watching Hazbin for the first time can be confusing because a lot of time a scene will happen and you'll have no idea why the characters are acting the way that they are.
The first example is Vaggie's and Carmilla's duet in episode 2. It doesn't really make sense because you don't really know Carmilla, so hearing her sing an emotional song doesn't really make sense. Having her duet with Vaggie is even weirder because these two characters have never interacted before, so you're not even sure if they know each other.
(The song also doesn't work because it's about doing whatever you can to protect your loved ones, even doing things you don't want to do, but Vaggie hasn't really done anything that betrays her morals for Charlie, so it comes across as a little weird. Though this is a part of a different criticism I have for Hazbin.)
But after watching episode 7, the duet makes sense know. You can appreciate their dynamic because you better understand their thematic parallels.
Another example is in episode 4, when Husk starts singing he's a loser and that he and Angel are the same. This really caught me off guard the first time I watched it, because, like, Angel is being sexually and physically abused, and Husk just have to be a bar tender. Besides forcing him to be there, Alastor isn't really forcing Husk to do anything he doesn't want to do, hell, he doesn't even force Husk to do physical labor because he has his shadows to do that.
So the sing feels like emotional pay off, without really seeing that Husk and Angel are actually exactly alike, no really.
Until episode 5 comes out and you see Alastor treat Husk like a pet and even physically threatens him when Husk talks back a little bit.
I firmly believe that we should have gotten this scene before, or at least during, episode 4. It would establish to the audience that both Valentino and Alastor don't see Angel and Husk as human beings, but instead just a toy/pet. Then the song "Loser Baby" would make more sense.
(Honesty I would change quite a bit about episode 4, but yet again, there's another criticism for another day.)
So Alastor's instant animosity towards Lucifer feels like another one of those "pay off before set up" moments, where in the future we're going to get a scene that makes that scene feel more natural.

Queer Books for Spooky Season!
i have read and enjoyed all of these, and have organized them in such a way that makes sense to me and hopefully peaks your interest! most are straight-up horror, but some just have horror / spooky themes.
[please note, not all these books have overtly queer characters / relationships, but are included because they have queer authors and/or queer characters, plots or themes. don’t want people to go into any of these books expecting romance.]
Spooky & Sapphic
The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir. everyone on tumblr knows about this series. it’s a science-fantasy, it’s got lesbian necromancers in space, it’s got mysteries and intrigue, and i would describe it as a “fun” read but please know my idea of fun includes body horror, grief and spooky vibes.
The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling. the vibes of this one are off the charts. story is told from the perspective of a lone caver on a foreign planet, as she communicates with her dive suit’s handler. it’s tense and suspenseful, lots of survival-fiction vibes, and it’s exactly how i want characters to flirt: via coms only, as one fights for their life.
Yellow Jessamine by Caitlin Starling. this one’s a weird little gothic novella about a shipping magnate who’s confined to her creepy estate as a mysterious plague runs rampant through the city.
Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca. this novella is told via early-2000s chat logs and emails between two women as they develop one of the most unnerving relationships i’ve ever read. gross things happen! this one’s polarizing! but i loved it so much. absolutely unhinged vibes.
Parasites, but Goth
Leech by Hiron Ennes. most of this book is told from the POV of a parasitic hivemind called the Institute, which uses host bodies to act as physicians for the rest of society in a post-apocalyptic, gothic setting. and it gets weirder from there. it’s an honestly quite beautiful exploration of bodily autonomy, identity, and trauma.
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher. this is a retelling of the fall of the house of usher, and includes a spooky manor, fungal parasites, possessed wildlife, and the exact kind of unsettling atmosphere that i love in a horror book.
Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon. this story follows a teen mother who’s escaped from a cult and is now undergoing a fungal metamorphosis in the forest. big thriller/survival vibes and some truly excellent commentary about oppression, trauma and societal secrets.
Could Vampirism be Gayer? (yes, actually)
A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson. "dracula’s polycule” is what sold me on this book, and while yes, it’s got polyamorous vampires, the heart of the story is about the dynamics of an abusive relationship, with a strong thread of hope throughout.
The Route of Ice and Salt by José Luis Zárate, transl. by David Bowles. i’m not usually one to categorize a book as Important (TM) but this novella definitely is that. it was originally published in the 90s by a mexican author, and it’s a reimagining of dracula’s voyage to england from the POV of the captain, a closeted gay man full of queer yearning. this book is beautiful and painful and challenging and yes, important. it’s also horny as hell so like, you’ve been warned lol. only recently has it been made available in english, too!
Science as Horror
The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey. a short novel about a woman who’s recently separated from her husband, who in turn started a relationship with a clone of her. loved the character exploration in this, and it’s definitely got mystery/thriller vibes if you’re into that.
You’ve Lost a Lot of Blood by Eric LaRocca. this is a vibe-heavy, kind of trippy novella which features a story-within-a-story. don’t want to give away too much of the plot here because it’s a wild ride.
and finally, here’s some honorable mentions, at the end here because i didn’t love them. but you might!
Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey (haunted house personified, exploration of dysfunctional family)
The Seep by Chana Porter (post-apocalyptic quest)
Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant (killer mermaids)
Nothing but Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw (creepy mansion, corpse bride)

hiii friends, i reallly like this one and I hope you do too!

masterlist
To say that Lexie’s arrival had changed your life, and, of course, Hotch’s, would just about be the understatement of the century. But you like to think that both of you, separately, were adjusting remarkably well. Emphasis on the separately.
It was a weird dynamic that the two of you shared now. You played a large role in raising his children, and probably clocked just about as many hours as Jess did with them, making you one of their primary caretakers… but you weren’t their mother, or even their aunt, for that matter. You seemed to spend every waking moment with their father, but the two of you were not together. You’d told some friends of yours– non-FBI friends, of course, about the situation, and they were appalled. “He’s using you!” They’d cried over glasses of wine on your couch, but it wasn’t like that at all. He wasn’t using you for anything, you just enjoyed spending time with them, and lending a hand. You loved his children like your own. Emphasis on “like.” Because, you know, boundaries.
And the lines you and Aaron had wordlessly drawn in the sand prevented him from, well, using you in any other way. You’d been in close quarters, you’d borrowed his old sweatshirts when dirty diapers soiled your clothes, and you’d held hands when Jack’s games of ring-around-the-rosie necessitated it, but nothing more, nothing further. Even if the pressure did seem to get worse for you every day, Hotch never made any indication that he was struggling with the same urges you were, the ones that told you to wipe the excess ketchup off of the corner of his mouth with your thumb, or to reach up and adjust his tie when it’s gone crooked, or to ask him to hold you just for the sake of doing it.
Of course he didn’t. Because the two of you had boundaries, rules, lines you didn’t cross. Until, of course, you did.
You hadn’t intended to stay at Hotch’s as late as you had, but Jack’s school had their annual art show, which meant a delayed dinner and bath, and by the time you and Hotch had gotten both kids to sleep and cleaned up the kitchen, it was late, and you were exhausted.
“I want you to stay here tonight,” Hotch said as he slung the dish towel he had just been using over his shoulder.
“That’s okay, Hotch. I can drive,” you insisted through a yawn.
“I don’t think you can,” he chuckles. “Go ahead and sleep in my room,” he tells you, and you’re momentarily confused– he had a guest room. Except, of course, now he had a daughter, instead. In the time it took you to do this mental calculation, he’s crossed the room and has started to fit a sheet over the couch.
“Don’t be ridiculous. I can sleep on the couch,” you insist, helping him with the sheet.
“No, it’s fine, you take the bed,” he tells you as he tucks a corner in between the cushions.
“I’m not doing that, Hotch,” you insist as you mirror him.
“The couch isn’t comfortable,” he warns you.
“Well then you shouldn’t be sleeping there, either,” you point out.
Hotch has no comeback for this, and you’re secretly a little thrilled by your win, but his persistent stare distracts you. You draw your bottom lip in between your teeth, and try not to read into the way he breaks eye contact to flick his gaze down to your mouth. The air is so thick you think you can drown in it, but you break the spell of silence instead.
“Look… we’re both adults, right? We can share a bed without it being weird. Or at least, no weirder than when I bunk with JJ and you bunk with Rossi in the middle of nowhere,” you remind him.
“I really don’t mind–”
“I know you don’t. But I don’t think either one of us is going to sleep well on the couch, and I think you’re going to throw a fit if I try to drive myself home. So this is for the best, yeah?”
Aaron sighs. “Alright,” he relents. “Let me get you something to sleep in.”
He gives you a pair of sweats and an old t-shirt, and you change in the guest bathroom, letting him have his bedroom. When you come back in, he’s brushing his teeth, and you climb into bed.
“I wasn’t going to throw a fit, by the way. I wouldn’t have let you drive home, but that doesn’t make it a fit. I’m a grown man, we don’t throw tantrums,” he mutters to you good-naturedly as he settles in next to you and flicks off the light.
You roll your eyes with a smile. “Riiight,” you let him off the hook, for now.
“Thank you for staying. I know it’s not convenient, but it gives me peace of mind,” he tells you.
“It’s not as much trouble as I make it out to be,” you assure him.
“And having you here… is nice.  In any way that we can get you to stay around,” he says.
“You know that you’re not getting me to do anything. You couldn’t keep me away from that sweet girl if you tried,” you tell him. “And the rest of you, of course,” you add.
“In any event, I’m grateful. I don’t think I could do this without you,” he says.
“You could, Aaron. You’re a smart man who knows what’s important. You would figure it out. It may not be easy, but you would figure it out,” you implore him to believe you.
“Maybe,” he says with a sigh. “Maybe that’s true. But honestly, I don’t ever want to find out.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” you promise.
“It’s not just your help, either. God, it’s so far past that,” he clarifies.
“I know, Aaron. Trust me, I get it,” you say, hoping that you really do get it, that in his own way, he’s trying to tell you that he’s feeling the same things you do.
“Sometimes I can’t sleep at night. I have all these thoughts that I can’t take  hold of,” he tells you.
“About the kids?” You ask, not wanting to let yourself believe it could be anything else.
“Sometimes,” he says.
“And the other times?” you whisper, emboldened by the darkness and the lateness of the hour.
He draws in a deep breath. “I shouldn’t.”
“It’s me, Aaron. You know you can tell me anything. I already know your biggest secret,” you tease quietly, trying to lighten the mood.
You can practically hear the gear turning in his head. “Being able to do something, and it being the right thing to do— those aren’t always the same,” he says.
You bite your lip, grateful that he can’t see your face fall. You feel him shift, turning away from you.
“Goodnight,” he says.
As you begin to wake up the next morning, you’re confused by the amount of light you can feel on your face— you always draw your blinds before bed. You remembered, then, that this wasn’t your bedroom, wasn’t your bed at all, and you opened your eyes. The two of you, once staunchly on either side of the mattress, had shifted in the night, and were now practically on top of each other– your legs tangled together, your head somewhere between his chest and his shoulder. He’s got one arm slung around your middle, preventing you from extricating yourself without waking him. You lift your head slightly to look at Aaron’s alarm clock– he didn’t trust just his iPhone to do the job. 5:28. Well, you could pretend to sleep for two more minutes, and he’d wake up and surely pull away. No harm, no foul.
Except he was already awake, you realized when you looked down at his face.
“Good morning,” he said groggily.
You roll a little, out of his arms, and he makes a disgruntled face that he quickly masks. “Sorry. I know that’s weird,” you say, letting out a nervous chuckle. The events of last night were fresh in your memory, now– he didn’t love you the way you loved him, you were certain. And now you had to deal with that.
“It’s not that weird,” he says, shaking his head. “Is it weird for you?” He asks, and you nearly startle at the weight of the question.
You take a beat to make sure your voice will be steady before you answer. “No,” you say.
“Good,” he says. “Maybe we should talk about—”
He’s cut off by the shrill beeping of the alarms. He stops talking, but doesn’t break eye contact with you, doesn’t move an inch. The seconds slog by like hours.
“I think you should shut that off. You’ll wake the kids,” you remind him after a million years of wrought tension.
Aaron rolls over to hit the clock, and you hurry out of bed. “You have clothes in Alexis’ closet,” He tells you. “She has the most space. They got dirty here, I think you must have borrowed something of mine and left your stuff here. I washed it, obviously,” he explains.
You nod, suddenly feeling out-of-place in the apartment you considered an extension of your own.
“Okay, thanks,” you say, darting out into the hall and sneaking into Lexie’s room so as to not wake her. You change quickly, but by the time you make it out of her room, Aaron is already in the kitchen, working on breakfast and coffee.
“How many eggs do you want?” He asks.
“I actually think I’m going to run home,” you tell him. “I don’t have any of my hair stuff or makeup here.”
“You sure? You have time for breakfast, at least,” he says, his eyes seeming to plead with you.
“I’m sure, Hotch. I’ll see you at work,” you tell him. “Give the kids kisses from me,” you call as you rush out the door.
Your head rushes as you drive back to your apartment. Why had you slept in his bed? And why had you tried to push him to say things he clearly didn’t believe? You had boundaries, lines, for a reason. The two of you hadn’t ever discussed them– the boundaries, or the reasons, but they existed for a reason, right? Because waking up in Aarons arms and wanting to bathe in the gravelly sound of his just-awoken voice was a bad thing, a thing that absolutely couldn’t happen, right?
You’re still wound up by the time you get to work, but you try to keep your head down and make it to your desk without arousing any suspicion. It works, for an hour or so, until Emily moseys over to your desk with a fresh cup of coffee. You know that it’s a trap.
“You looked like you could use a hot one,” she says, tilting her chin towards your mug which had long since gone cold.
“Thanks, Em,” you say, trying to turn back to your report and make it clear that you’re not interested in small talk– or probing questions– this morning.
“Do anything fun this weekend?” She asks.
“Nothing to speak of,” you lie. You’d taken the kids to the Air and Space Museum over the weekend.
“You seem to be spending a lot more time with Hotch lately,” JJ piles on, and you start to grind your teeth. You flick your eyes up towards Hotch’s office– the blinds are open, and you can see Morgan and Rossi around his desk, no doubt giving him the same treatment.
You shrug. “Yeah, we see each other outside of work. We all do that,” you play it off.
“Yeah, but Hotch is… different,” JJ says.
“I don’t think so. He’s just a man. You all put him on a pedestal because he’s our boss.”
“But you don’t? Put him on a pedestal,” Emily asks.
You snort. “No, I don’t.”
“So… you must know,” she continues. “Is he seeing anyone? He’d tell you, I’m sure. You spend so much time together.”
You can see in her face that she’s trying to profile you, watching for signs or defensiveness that would, to her, confirm that you and Hotch were secretly seeing each other. It’s not the first time the girls had asked, although it is the first time the guys have descended on Hotch at the same time. You prepare to answer Emily, when Hotch’s voice interrupts you from the doorway.
“You don’t have to answer that.” He tells you. “It’s time,” he says, narrowing his eyes at you. The girls all whip their heads to look at you, thinking that their suspicions have been confirmed.
“Can everyone meet me in the conference room, please?” Hotch requests, and you feel like you might throw up. You have nothing to be worried about, this has nothing to do with you, but your adrenaline is still pumping. Hotch steps back into his office and you ascend up the steps, hanging a left towards him as everyone else turns right towards the conference room. The whispers suddenly increase ten-fold, but you suppose it won’t matter a few minutes from now anyways.
You slip in quietly without knocking. He’s sitting at his desk, his head in his hands. “Hey. You okay?” You ask, your voice only a hair above a whisper.
“No,” he chuckles. “I let this go for too long. They’re going to be upset with me.”
“They’re only going to be upset that they missed out on newborn snuggles,” you tell him, crossing the room to sit on the edge of his desk. “Come on, look at me,” You say, taking his hands in yours so that he can’t hide from you.
“What if they don’t trust me anymore? Not just as their friend, but as the leader of this team?”
“I still trust you, right?” You remind him.
“You’re different,” he says with an assuredness that nearly sends a chill down your spine as he rubs his thumb over the back of your hand.
“It’s going to be okay. They’re going to be so excited. It’s going to be great. They will love her, I promise. How could they not?”
“And you’re going to be there?” He asks, his anxious brown eyes drawing a line straight into your heart.
“Of course, Aaron. You’ve got this. You don’t even need me.”
“I do,” he insists, rising from his seat. “Let’s go.”
The two of you entering the conference room together sets off another round of excited whispers, but you just ignore them. The truth was about to come out, anyways.
“Four months ago, I received personal news that I initially decided not to share with all of you,” He starts, and you catch him running his thumb over the side of his index finger to calm his nerves as he speaks. “It’s important to me that you all know that I didn’t keep this private because I don’t trust you– I needed time to figure things out for myself before I made them public. If I’ve broken your trust, please know that I’m deeply sorry for that.”
“Is everything okay?” Morgan asks, and you can’t say you blame him— Hotch’s preface is making it sound like he’s about to confess to having a terminal illness, not the light of your life– or, one of them, at least.
“Yes, everything is fine,” Hotch confirms. “Four months ago, I found out I have a daughter. Her name is Alexis Haley Hotchner. Her mother is not in the picture.  Again, I’m sorry for keeping her from you for so long, and I hope that you all can forgive me for that.”
You could hear a pin drop in the room— everyone’s faces are frozen in shock, and you think if someone doesn’t speak up soon, it’s going to send Hotch into a full blown panic. You’re about to break the silence yourself, but Penelope does it for you.
“Well, can we see pictures?!” She asks excitedly.
Just like that, the spell of shock is broken, and everyone is clamoring to hug Hotch and passing around his phone for pictures. It had gone fine, just like you said it would. After a moment, Rossi’s voice cuts through the calamity.
“Hold on,” he says. “That still doesn’t explain why you and Hotch have been attached at the hip these past few months.”
You look at Hotch, but he doesn’t make any move to answer, so you do it. “Hotch had taken sick time when Lexie first got here. I showed up with soup and he was holding the baby when I opened the door, so the cat was pretty much out of the bag.” You explain. And that was all, wasn’t it? It was just convenient that you already knew?
“That makes sense,” JJ agrees. “I can’t imagine having to handle both of my boys on my own.”
“So that’s it?” Morgan asks. “You’re just lending a hand. There’s nothing else going on.”
You look at Hotch again, and the two of you lock eyes, for a moment too long to make his next sentence believable. “That’s it. There’s nothing between us.”
The words settle like acid in the pit of your stomach.

Fanfic Author Self-Recs!
@haljathefangirlcat tagged me to rec five of my own fanfics with you all — thank you, friend! 💖 I've tried to go with a variety of different fandoms and have mostly focused on older works. I also purposely haven't recommended any of my Dragon Age works as I feel DA has been occupying a lot of my brain space lately, and I wanted to give some of the spotlight to my other fannish interests! I'm gonna tag @mxanigel, @barbex, @joiningthefandomeightyearslate, @chocochipbiscuit and @fandomn00blr to share five of their works with us (if you so desire!) Without any further ado, I present my self-recs: 1. Retrospect - Mass Effect: Andromeda - Alec Ryder/Ellen Ryder (10k, rated M)
They say your life flashes before your eyes before you die and he's about to find out just how right they are.
A series of vignettes exploring Alec Ryder's relationships with his nearest and dearest, and the faltering steps he took to bridge the gaps between them.
Every time any sort of self-recommendation meme comes up, Retrospect is always the first fic that comes to mind. To this day, I still consider it my magnum opus, as I feel it really captures my strengths as an author. Character study of a morally grey, controversial character? Check. Non-linear narrative? Check. Experimental prose? Check. Vignettes? Check. Themes of family and struggling to fit in? Check check. If anyone ever wants to make my entire fucking month, please read this fic and tell me your thoughts on it. You will have my undying gratitude! 💖
2. Grounded - Mass Effect Andromeda - Calvin Kosta/Joelle Kosta (2.2k, rated M)
Calvin remembers the first time he held Liam in his arms. Big baby, nine pounds. His son is an ugly, wrinkly thing and yet also the most beautiful sight in the world. He smooths down the infant’s hair, kisses the soft spot on his head and whispers, “You’re gonna do great things." During the Reaper War, Calvin Kosta reflects on his relationship with his son.
This fic did really well on Tumblr (one of the few times I'd ever gotten over 100 notes on a post), but didn't quite get the same level of traction on AO3, which was quite interesting to me at the time as I'd never had that happen before (or since!) Honestly, it covers a lot of similar themes as Retrospect, but this time focused on Liam's family and how they deal with the Reaper War when they're left behind on Earth. IDK, I'm just obsessed with examining the human drive to live and survive, and what we struggle for, and how both our past experiences and our hopes for the future shape our actions, whether we're willing to admit it to ourselves or not.
3. Best Served Hot - Ace Attorney - Miles Edgeworth/Franziska von Karma (2k, rated E)
Franziska's gloved fingers seized Miles's jaw, digging into the sides of his face. "We were never siblings," she said. "Papa made sure of that. But if I can't best you in any other way, then I will have this."
If Retrospect is my ultimate magnum opus, then Best Served Hot is my franmiles manifesto. It truly is all of my feelings about this complicated and messy relationship dynamic carefully distilled into a fanfic! Anyway, I'm obsessed with the fact that Franziska regularly refers to Miles as her little brother, but Miles never refers to her as his sister.
However, the way that Miles acts with Franziska is SO sibling-like, whereas Franziska's a bit... weirder. She never really had normal familial relationships modeled to her (Miles, on the other hand, at least had something of a normal upbringing before his father's death).
Franziska is also a character who, for lack of a better term, weaponises her femininity. She's so young but she's built this whole aesthetic around tight miniskirts and kitten-heeled boots and carrying and using a fucking bullwhip. So, I 'm particularly fascinated by the cross-section of Franziska's obsession with Miles Edgeworth and her insecurities (and how she over-compensates for them).
Of course, if she stopped to think about it for a minute, she should have realised that Miles Edgeworth is perhaps not the ideal target for her feminine wiles, but Franziska's not exactly known for keeping a cool head in a crisis.
Finally, this fic also explores another point in Franziska's life that I'm fascinated by, which is her reaction to Phoenix Wright's disbarment. Phoenix is the only lawyer who has ever bested her (if she can even admit that much), and I think she would be INFURIATED by the insinuation that he owes his career success to forgery. Franziska von Karma would NOT be bested by a fraud! (And also she would be furious that Klavier Gavin got the chance to do what she's always wanted to do -- that is, defeat Phoenix Wright -- but that's a topic for another fanfic.)
4. Intermission - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - Audra Levine/Greg Serrano (2.3k, rated T.)
Recently divorced Audra Levine visits West Covina to provide moral support during her frenemy’s open mic night. Greg has always had a type.
While gregaudra (graudra?) might be something of a random ship, I was really surprised by how well they worked together (although in hindsight, it should have been obvious -- Greg really has a type, huh). I love Audra as a character, and I'm always obsessed with giving her room to grow and move on as a character and determine the shape of her own life, the way she wants, much as Rebecca (and Greg) got to do in the course of the series. (Also, its sequel, Realization, still has one of my favourite lines I think I've ever written: Audra's been busy filing away the parts of her life that don’t spark joy while retaining the parts that do, like she’s Marie Kondo-ing the weight and burden of everyone’s expectations instead of her household possessions.
I so rarely write in contemporary fandoms that it was a fun exercise to write stories where the popculture references actually help ground it in time and place.)
5. Sink or Swim - Harry Potter - Percy Weasley/Oliver Wood (12k, rated T.)
Percy has always struggled to keep his head above water.
(Or: the story of Percy Weasley, from his youth, through to his estrangement with his family, to the end of the war.)
It feels weird to be recommending HP fic in this day and age, but my complicated* feelings towards the fandom aside, I'm still really proud of how this fanfic turned out and how I was able to cram all of my Percy Weasley analysis into a coherent story. I particularly loved delving into how Percy was pushed into positions of responsibility from a young age (and then simultaneously derided for the very same qualities his parents reinforced), and how he struggled with his conflicting desires to fit in but also to succeed and be recognised for his talents and efforts. There's a couple of sentences from the fic which really encapsulate how I see Percy's relationship to his family, which I'll quote here:
In bits and pieces, Percy tells Oliver all about the estrangement to his family: how he’d always gotten along with his dad best growing up, no matter how his mother had doted on him. How when he was younger, he’d wanted nothing more than to be the next Arthur Weasley. How he’d always thought that his dad deserved more.
How it was easier to blame his father’s idiosyncrasies and personality for his family’s struggles with money, than to acknowledge it as a failure of the society he’d been raised in.
How he’d foolishly thought that if he studied enough, worked enough, succeeded enough, he could change it all.
Percy's story really is that of every working-class child who's sought to improve their life (and their family's life) through education and I just... relate to that a lot!!

Fandom Ask Meme!
2. OT3?
I've feel like I've had tons of OT3s in this fandom because let's face it, you put any of three of these vampires together and it's going to be a good time. They all just have such good dynamics and then you add another person and bam! It gets weirder in the best way.
My top 2 are Armand/Lestat/Daniel and Marius/Armand/Daniel. Apparently I just really love Daniel being a mediator/peacemaker between two guys who love each other but also love to set each other off like gasoline and matches. Which is extra fun because Armand and Daniel also have a tendency to set each other off, so things can get dramatic.
I can't choose. I wrote a lot of Armand/Lestat/Daniel last year (In City Never Sleeps the "Armand" is silent but actually a massive part of it and I wrote the threesome in some follow up fics). I've been more obsessed with Marius/Armand/Daniel lately, and I just wrote a 5-part plot-based fic with them that I am trying to convince myself to post.
15. Have you noticed your style change over time?
Oh, 100%. I've always been very dialogue heavy and character-driven as a writer, but I think I've gotten better at descriptions and balancing the elements of a story better. I also used to RP a lot so a lot of fan writing was for that, rather than contained stories like I write now, and it's really fun to really dig into the motivations and feelings of everyone in the scene.
23. Has your favourite character/ship changed over time?
Oh yes. When I first read the books, Louis was my favorite hands down. I did not like Armand very much. I held a grudge over what he'd done to Claudia/Louis, and Louis/Lestat were my ship. I read the books out of order so I read TotBT before QotD, and when I read that, I feel in love with Daniel - who doesn't love an intrepid reporter chasing after a vampire? (and Jesse! ILU girl!) and learned to appreciate Armand. I became a big DM shipper just in time for Daniel to vanish from the books for years. 😭 And I still love the dynamics of the four of them hanging out doing shenanigans, sometimes with Marius and others.
So Daniel became my favorite special guy second and I still love and empathize with Louis a whole lot.
Thank you so much for the ask!!!

hi liya! slightly weird question—do you have thoughts on abo stuff? slightly weirder question,,,,, i know sinners technically don’t have heats or ruts or anything but abo adela thoughts mwuahahahah…? i’m curious if you have any! 😊😊
To be quite honest, I've only recently gotten into abo lol. A few years ago I was like damn this kinda weird... not my thing but I won't judge people who fuck with it... but recently my eyes have been opened and I realized how fun and sexy abo dynamics can be (in terms of exploring power and relationships) and also I like making people go into heat <3
Anyways in an ideal world where people go into heat, I think it's always fun to make repressed people go through that particularly. Haha oh no... the desires you've always sought to hide and can't confront are quite literally fucking you up... I like the idea of Adela avoiding you and locking herself up in her room because she insists she can deal with it on her own and doesn't want to bother you even though she's quite literally consumed by thoughts of you and it's you she imagines touching her and she's biting her own hands pretending it's your flesh. she's so normal though guys dw
(she's lying btw she just doesn't want to confront her own growing desire for you. jacking off 1000 times is easier than facing your feelings!!!)
So yeah, you could just be minding your own business and Adela would literally be consumed by lust. Her heats or ruts or whatever would be like longer than average because like. she's always using suppressors and also waits until the last possible minute to deal with them if she doesn't, so her body isn't used to them !!!
And if you were to stumble upon her and offer a helping hand? She would be ripping your clothes off without a second thought to get to you, and even though she's telling you to go and to not bother with her, the hands all over your body and the kisses along every inch of your skin are not really dissuading you... She tries really hard to be gentle and good to you and to take care of you, but also like. she might lose the last shreds of her self control and just make you eat her out until your tongue is numb lol. all the while she has her hands working their magic on you which makes it hard to concentrate!!

do you think the knight of iron and blood, had it been finished before lloyd transmigrated, would've headed in a javier/alicia direction? kinda intrigued by the whole "knight saving embittered monarch after losing his lord" dynamic...
ooohhhh that would be very compelling actually
i think one of the bk moon's greatest crimes is that we just get hints of the overarching plot of "knight of blood and iron" instead of the entire thing, which i get why he did, it would be very tiring to basically plan out two books just to write one and also maybe it'd be a little constricting to have to limit yourself to a book that isn't even written but!! i still think it's sad we didn't get more of it :(
but honestly as compelling as javier/alicia in the original plot would've been i don't actually think it would've happened,,, mostly because alicia murdered a lot of people and i don't see javier as someone likely to think "i can fix her" ajkshdka
from what little we know of the original plot she was a "cold blooded tyrant" which,,,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
,, yeah,,
plus we do get to see a little bit of alicia going full tyrant in one of ending spoilers and it is Not Pretty
javier is very much a white and black kind of morality at the beginning and without lloyd to,,, uh, broaden his horizons (lmao) i don't know how willing he'd be to approach someone who's murdered lots of people without the express intent of,, well, kill them before they kill others y'know?
i mean the guy was fully willing to cut off the legs of a guy who had scammed his lord, i don't think he'd hesitate too much on killing an outright tyrant
so there would have to very specific circumstances for neither of them being able to kill the other on sight just so there's a chance of them,,, actually speaking ajksjdka
but i mean weirder things have happened in novels, i can totally see the novel taking that route if the author really wanted it to. i mean javier has to be that pretty for a reason y'know? maybe the first part of the story is just havier getting strong enough to go toe to toe against the queen but not so much that he can defeat her easily so they're locked into a never ending series of battles against each other so they keep meeting again and again. and then along the way a sort of begrudging respect for the other develops and maybe that allows the queen to be moved by javier's selflessness and bravery, his refusal to let innocent people be hurt without trying to do something about it, reminding her of when she cared about her people like that, when she tried to be a good ruler and a good person.
maybe in one particular battle, javier gets hurt saving an innocent that had gotten caught in the crossfire and they both know if he tries to keep fighting her he will surely lose but he still stands up and puts himself in between her and her army and the people he's trying to protect because it's the only thing he can do now.
and maybe instead of continuing the fight and pressing her advantage like he expects her to do, alicia retreats, muttering something about there being no honor in defeating a injured enemy.
and javier is left standing there, bleeding and exhausted but surprisingly alive, completely confused because,,,, was that,,, mercy from the queen??? from the evil tyrant he's been trying to defeat for so long now??
and maybe something shifts between them after that, their fights aren't quite the same now, their moves not quite as intent to kill as they had been before
maybe there's a little more between them than just respect
but that's just maybe idk i wouldn't know :)

🦀🦋✏️ for whoever you'd like !
I'm gonna talk about Hoffman with this one! Technically he's only a crush, but also I fear I have become very attached to him and he's likely to become a bf soon
🦀: How did they handle realizing they were in love? Embarrassed? Nervous? Mad?
Hoffman fell first, and he really didn't process it as love at first bcs he's grayaro and has not had romantic feelings for anyone often. But when he realized, he was almost annoyed with himself. He doesn't like being emotionally close with people, so there was also some nervousness there bcs they already had a weird dynamic, and he didn't want to make it even weirder by being into her. So there was a lot of awkward pining for her where he pretended he wasn't having feelings
Shepard was also a little annoyed when she realized her feelings for Hoffman. Her goal with trying to help him get rehabilitated wasn't exactly to fall for him, and she just as a moment of like. Come on. Have some self respect. Why are you falling for a man that's killed like 40 people. And she's mostly pretty good at ignoring her emotions so she basically just told herself to pretend that she doesn't have feelings while also doing a bit of yearning
🦋: How long did it take them to get out of the awkward early relationship stage? Have they gotten more confident around each other?
It definitely would take them a while to get out of the early relationship stage. Neither of them are really sure how to go about handling things with each other, but of the two, Hoffman is definitely the one that's able to become comfortable with things faster
✏️: How canon compliant are you with them? Do you stick pretty close or just have fun cause it’s your ship so no one can tell you what to do other wise?
Generally speaking I stick very close with canon. But it also gets a little tricky once we get to where Hoffman makes his last appearance. bcs in the writer commentary for that, they say that he ended up dying. Then in more recent stuff from one of the directors of the series, he said that they've talked about bringing Hoffman back for a new movie. So whether or not he's dead or alive is currently a big ???, but within my thoughts for him and Shepard, she ends up rescuing him from the bathroom. Even if he is alive tho, there's bound to be canon divergence on that front should he ever be in future movies

I don't really care that people miss jake and Corey, snc wouldn't have done anything interesting with these 2 bc they acted too childish and investigated nothing whilst with them
i don't get how anyone could miss jake and corey from snc's investigations. sure, from their daily videos or whatever, yeah. that dynamic that they all had together was untouched. comedy gold most times. but paranormal wise? absolutely not.
jake doesn't believe, and personally has gotten weirder and weirder (but not in a fun quirky way, more like in a side-eye type of way) as time has gone on. and corey... is elton's lap dog. so, even if he wanted to do videos with snc, which they both should want that since overnight isn't exactly getting crazy views and snc literally just hit 8 mil subs, elton would never allow it.
speaking of elton, bc i've been holding onto this since last night and i just gotta bitch for two seconds: on snc's subreddit someone asked why ppl don't like elton, and someone literally gave their recount of going to see elton and corey's tour and elton making snide remarks about snc............. mind you this tour just ended. so elton, even after all this time, IS STILL BITCHING ABOUT SNC.
if this man doesn't grow up and get a hobby. i swear to god.
also god knows elton is going around to these places that he's investigating first and badmouth snc. i just know he is. i don't need proof that that's not happening.

I want to ask Even Weirder ship questions about TD now. Buyer’s choice of any or all of Coderra, Sierra-Heather, Leshawna-Heather, GwenShawna, and ChrisxChef but ChrisxChef opinion is non-negotiable; the people need to know
For Coderra,
Tumblr media
I adore Sierra in my heart of hearts but she creeped me the fuck out the first time I watched that season I can't lie. I do like how her and Cody's characters develop through the season and honestly in better writer's hands they'd be great but I'm begging Sierra to figure out boundaries. Or at least for the Idol Worship to be written out, at least.
Sierra-Heather
Tumblr media
Does the Idol Worship even count considering how much of a fandom hate sink Heather was written as, I don't recall exactly but I feel like Heather might've been the easiest for Sierra to treat as an actual person (albeit a maybe initially unlikable one) so I can see potential in their dynamic a lot more than hers with Cody. Like "Oh shit these are just people my age, maybe it's fucked up how I've built a pedestal on a bunch of candid shots of these people's worst moments Livestreamed to the world". Something like that? Idk.
Leshawna Heather
Tumblr media
I really forgot they were friends at some point for how past the writers dropped it, honestly I would have liked to see more of it. In a better universe maybe we actually see them becoming good friends despite being at each other's throats for the majority of the first season and it carries over past Action into the extended universe. I don't think the story is more interesting per se but I think it could definitely be deeper and more meaningful.
Gwenshawna
Tumblr media
I wanted to be BOTH OF THEM so bad for the first season I never saw a friendship like that and I wanted it so bad! What happened to them, why'd we lose that. We as a society lost something wonderful when their friendship was shafted.
Chris and Chef
Tumblr media
I've got mixed feelings LMAO. They are the best partners in crime and no season is worthwhile if either of them are missing, hell I wish we'd gotten like a couples counseling episode with both of them (being an actual couple or no debatable) they're just pretty fun to watch be their worst selves.
But also I think they're just as funny when they're at each other's throats so definitely not a healthy wholesome ship and Chef at least can do better (barely. Chris absolutely can't). If there's ever reunion special I half hope it's revealed they're married or otherwise confirmed life partners to explain why they've put up with each other all these years and also so neither can testify for whatever other crime against humanity has been committed in a hypothetical new season.

The only time a fictional character ever did “Whoa what if I had known this person who wasn’t born at the precise moment I was at some other time in the past and our ages were an issue?” successfully was Andy Dwyer when he did math and realized that if he and April had been friends when he was in third grade and she was a baby, he didn’t know anything about infant care and could have killed her. This was successful because it was funny and it was obviously a ridiculous leap to make, when April and Andy are clearly adults now who don’t need to know anything about infant care to be able to rely on each other.
So that romance novel in that earlier post has a paragraph musing about a mere four-year age gap.
(Side note: can you imagine being twenty-seven years old—being a grown adult with bills to pay and grocery shopping to do—and contemplating hooking up with someone who is thirty-one and thinking, “Whoa, older woman”? Come on. That’s just a woman to you. You’re in the same demographic. Go enjoy the same generational trends together, you two.)
ANYWAY. Age gap discourse has gotten us to the point that either romance novelists are reassuring us that entire unquestionable adults with different birthdays should be allowed to hook up, or the romance novelists are writing characters who are worried about Problematic Age Gaps into their fiction, which is truly a bizarre choice
Now, to be fair, in many historical romances, some age gaps are noted; no one wants to have to marry Lord Oldmann, Earl of Creakyjoints. Often enough it’s just because he’s old (though in the historicals no one ever complains of the Power Dynamic) but he might also be a drunk or a lecher or have enough dead wives that he seems cursed or maybe he’s just deeply unpleasant to be around. And so very often, the heroine is saved from such a fate and is able to marry the hero, who may well be a mere ten years older than she is (she has just finished her first season and he has been doing English Gentleman Things for a while, you see)
I don’t know if the Older Woman in the paragraph in that post is the love interest or not. If not, well, maybe that’s for the best. If so, that maybe makes it weirder? I’ve never read an Age Gap romance where the age gap was a big part of it, so I don’t known if in those stories the leads spend a lot of time thinking about how different in age they are, but that example is truly mind-boggling
Just think. Four years. When the POV character was a baby, the Older Woman would have barely been in preschool. If they had been friends they both would have been helpless but the Older one would for sure have not been able to care for a baby
This is not much of a rant. I should have gone the sleepy route. I’ll do that now
