A Critique of Riordan's: Neurodivergency
tldr: Rick made ADHD and dyslexia superpowers in the books which fit the time he wrote the books, but it's not accepted now cause it diminishes neurodivergent struggle. At the same time he made autism coded characters the 'annoying' ones and had a very racist thing of having the only neurotypical be Frank.
He tried to fix it in the show. It worked for about 3 seconds.
TW: Ableism, Autism speaks mention, r slur, anti-schizo stuff.
This paragraph is useless so don't read if you don't want to: Sitting in my drafts are 3 different 'A critique of Riordan's' posts i made as i tried to redo my full critique of the Riordanverse with a little more positive feedback and a little less Rick Riordan is the devil spawn. I have decided to not do it in order because because i watched the show and i noticed some things which were iffy and others which were great. So yeah neurodivergency first. Enjoy and think Critically.
Books
Research and Diversity
The books were written in the early 2000s for Rick's son who has ADHD and dyslexia
As a result, it takes on a very "your ADHD and dyslexia is a superpower" message which were popular during the time, but we recognise now has delegitimised neurodivergent struggles
Also as a result, the books were very focused on his son's symptoms, and represented ADHD as a monolith which quickly turned into stereotypes (e.g jumpy, impatient and fast reflexes becoming the connecting feature of half-bloods)
It got so unresearched that at one point he said:
Tumblr media
He also talks about coffee in a similar way, despite sugar and coffee not making us more hyperactive and instead making us sleepy. Unless all the scientists and people with ADHD are wrong i really don't know this works.
and also said this: "Leo was extremely ADHD even by demigod standards" Like what
But the worst part about the PJO books was that the neurodivergency was limited to the first book. Percy's ADHD and dyslexia magically vanish and honestly it's only really brought back up in HOO every now and then (not very well might i add)
Ways he could have improved:
He could have given other characters, like Annabeth, more diverse symptoms of ADHD. It wasn't that hard, For Annabeth recognise that she as a 'gifted kid' is more likely to have undiagnosed and so have to face the issues related to being undiagnosed and/or being both a gifted kid and having ADHD, and then also give her more symptoms common to girls like being really chatty or frequently daydreaming.
Continuing having ADHD (and dyslexia) as constant parts of the novels rather than throwaway lines. Build it into the characters actions and persona rather than add it on like an accessory
Research. Never stop researching. Always reach out to people with the disorders and ask them to help. Writing is nothing without research.
Get sensitivity readers
Grammar
This is really minor, but he keeps say ____ was ADHD, and like gramattically that's a no. I am not a disorder i am a person with a disorder . Note for autism, the prefered grammer is Autistic person (aka turn into adjective and describe, something we can't do with ADHD)
Nico and Leo
Making Leo and Nico the 2 characters who were annoying and unlikeable (to everyone else not to fans) was really weird cause these 2 characters were the autistic coded ones.
NOTE: I did see a post explaining it better in the past, and i will link it when/if i find it again.
Tyson and the R Slur
I genuinely think he tried to make the r-slur scene show that it was bad, but the way Percy reacted to it wasn't quite right. Especially for childrens books these things need to be really clear. So it was good to make a bad bully character who was hated say it, but he could have made it better by skipping Percy saying "He’s not r*tarded" and go straight to "I had to try really, really hard not to punch Sloan the face."
The scene was ok, it could have been better, but again these were written in the 2000s, we have to acknowledge that.
Percy and School
Now this is interesting because this is more recent. Percy tried really hard in school and was smart, it was part of his characterisation. But he never did well in school, because that's how his disability affected him (especially since it was the American school system which we all know is shit and even more shit for people with learning disabilities).
The problem stems from TSATS, where Percy is made out to skip school, and not try at all (feeds into people with ADHD do bad cause they don't try/are lazy)

Racism: Frank Zhang
Frank Zhang the only Asian member of the 7 has no form of neurodivergency, despite the rest of them all having. It must be a just coincidence that there's a stereotype that asians are really smart and good at maths and the fact that the rest of the Romans have dyscalculia/s.
It's not weird at all that the character instead has lactose intolerance, which is really common in East Asia unlike dyslexia, ADHD or dyscalculia, which has such a low rate of diagnosis because there is a large stigma behind the disorders and because white people don't think Asians can have learning disabilities/s. No not weird at all that the dude is described with symptoms of dyspraxia but Rick refuses to recognise he is not neurotypical/s
I'm stepping out of sarcasm speak to remind you that Asians with learning disabilities are significantly less likely to get diagnosed with anything because:
because their parents won't let them until they have no other choice (glares at my parents) because there's a massive stigma behind intellectual/learning/development disorders in these communities
When we do try to get diagnosed our claims are diminished because of racist stereotypes and the belief that booksmarts/giftedness = no learning disability. It means most psychologists and psychiatrists (who are usually white) think that all Asians are smart so they don't ever have any form of neurodivergency and we're left to struggle.
Schizo Rep
Octavian. Villain. Schizo. Again.
Do i even need to explain this?
Show
Not actually a specific disorder - Percy just has a learning disability
Interestly Percy's dyslexia is just never talked about, And even his ADHD is never mentioned by name. He's got a random learning disorder which isn't specified. At first i assumed it was still ADHD cause the books, but watching more, you realise they aren't actually focusing on what learning disorder he has and what he has to deal with as a result of that. It's just a generic learning disorder.
Which is weird because learning disorders are all different and we all face different things, even with the same disorder. So placing all learning disorders in the same group? not good. Don't know what i expected from disney, but it wasn't this.
Autism Speaks
So the show tried to acknowledge that Percy was constantly told he was special and heroic when he really wanted to have help for his issues and for people to recognise that he has problems and those are bad. It also represented less stereotypical adhd symptoms (though whether that's because the disorder is no longer adhd or whether they wanted more inattentive symptoms to be present, we'll never know)
but then it went ahead and used a broken puzzle metaphor for his neurodivergency?
Tumblr media
Puzzle piece metaphors when talking about any form of neurodivergency are a no go because the creators of the metaphor literally want Autistic people dead.
I DON'T GIVE A SHIT THAT HE DOESN'T HAVE AUTISM, WE ARE NOT ALLIES TO THE AUTISM COMMUNITY IF WE USE THE LANGUAGE AUTISM SPEAKS CREATED
Not only that but a broken puzzle is not a good way to represent us anyways because NEURODIVERGENTS AREN'T BROKEN.

Omg idk if you talk Spanish or if it’s just XXC, but with that little and wonderful doodle you gave me the amazing headcanon of XXC being bilingual and just randomly speaking Spanish out of nowhere and nobody understanding him

[TL: XXC says "don't do coke in the bathroom"]
Shout out to the Spanish speaking MXTX fans. I don't think this is remotely what you wanted. (bonus below cut, TW: Drugs)

I gotta to say I hate the whole "[disability] is my superpower" because no it's not
It's such forced positivity and it's so easy to challenge
Because no, in a world where reading is so expected and necessary that nobody even thinks of it as a basic life skill anymore, you just expect it, dyslexia is not my superpowers
In a world, which is set up for the neurotypicals and doesn't account for other modes of learning, other ways of paying attention, ADHD is not my superpower
In a world, where arithmetic is considered basi, dyscalculia is not giving me special abilities
And in no way does having a disability that makes coordination difficult give me superpowers
Sure, it may not be the end of the world to have these disabilities and I maybe able to cope with them, learn to live with them, and accept them as part of my life
Sure I can feel genuinely neutral and frequently unbothered by them, when given accommodations and support
But in no way are they a superpower
Describing them as such, feels ableist, it feels like you are expecting me to not only be able to overcome them but somehow be even better because of them
And that's just not happening
I am allowed to be frustrated and annoyed when my life is made more difficult by them AND not hate being disabled
They aren't my superpower AND they aren't worth hating myself for
Because they don't make my life unbearable, they don't my life not worth living
They just make my experience of the world different, they just mean that I require support and accommodations and that's okay
I am happy to live my life accomodating for my disabilities
So don't ask me to see them as superpower, because they're not, but they're also not a drain on my resources the way eugenicists want them to be

I don't like talking about it, but prior to seeing GOTG3, I was in the worst mental place that I've ever been. I'm still struggling, and I'm still admittedly in the worst of it, but I've found that lately I've wanted to stay more than I've wanted to go.
All because of these lovely characters, their own experiences with trauma, and the community uplifting them.
This is so corny, and I'm already oversharing, but I'd like to thank you all for being such welcoming and passionate people.
Thank you for still being here with me!

“People who self dx with disabilities are taking recourses away from people with actual disabilities!!” What resources lmao. My high school tried to take away my accommodations because I was making an A in English while having dyslexia 😭

As someone who often misunderstands written text, and the person closest to me in the world is dyslexic it really bothers me how often on this site I see posts about “bad reading comprehension” and other literacy related difficulties as a criticism for bad faith interpretations. So I want to put it out there that:
1- This needs to change! Stop using ableism (and other prejudices) to criticize people for their decisions and/or behaviour (that they controlled!)
2- cognitive, emotional, intellectual, physical, and learning disabilities are not what make you a “good or bad” person, no part of who you are is a thing that makes you “bad”.
Thanks for taking the time to listen to this if you have, and I hope you have a great day!

“This is why the term queer is so ungodly stupid. You got things like transgender, gay, nonbinary, intersex and asexual all lumped together”
Anyway, you see why that’s stupid right? Like queer and LGBT+ are umbrella terms used to encapsulate a wide range of different communities that face similar issues. Nobody is saying the that gay people need the same resources as transgender people, and vice versa. But both gay people and transgender people know what it’s like to be forced to hide your identity from a world that thinks you’re sick and deluded for simply choosing to express your sexuality/gender differently.
Anyway. Now take the word “queer” and replace it with “neurodivergent” and take that big list of LGBT+ identities I gave and change it to “down syndrome, epilepsy, ADHD, PTSD, dyslexia, and generalised anxiety disorder”
Yes, people with epilepsy have very different needs to people with PTSD, but that’s not what an umbrella term is for. Epilepsy effects your neurology. So does PTSD. That’s it. That’s the link. That’s all there is to it. There’s not some big conspiracy about kids on tiktok diagnosing themselves with neurodivergent and taking resources away from people in need.
Anyway, shout out to that guy on tiktok for having the dumbest take ever!

Lancer is kind of concerning
so, I am a huge Lancer fan. But I genuinely believe his character is a lot more concerning than people give it credit for so I'm posting my discord rant here. Censoring my user and pfp along with my friends (She is censored in black and im censored in green) TW under the cut: Mentions of suicidal thoughts, child abuse, stuff of the like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
another thing i'll mention is that I actually did the math on how much the fight left Lancer with.
Tumblr media
And Lancer was just.... gonna let that happen. It boggles my mind man this kid needs therapy

A lot of people like to talk big shit about how self-diagnosis and self-treatment of medical problems using internet research is the height of narcissistic internet absurdity and an example of millennial and gen z women letting the internet rot our brains
Meanwhile
A friend of mine with a dad, brother, and two kids formally diagnosed with ADHD and a lifetime of symptoms finally went to get a diagnosis for herself and was told that her problems were due to being unhappy in her marriage, not ADHD
A friend of mine in an excruciating flare of chronic pain including recovery from a vulva biopsy was asked by a doctor if she'd tried yoga
A doctor once told me that I should go ahead with a radiation treatment that wasn't indicated for young women because "well, it'll probably make you infertile, yeah, but you'll have enough money to do IVF in like ten years so that's ok"
Doctors routinely prescribe antibiotics to breastfeeding moms who have thrush even though antibiotics make fungal infections worse
Every new doctor I tell I have EDS asks me to do the hypermobility party tricks because they want to see them, even though they should know that doing those movements isn't good for my body
Doctors refuse to advise parents to give their constipated kids enemas, one going so far as to tell me that it would give my kid psychological issues, blatantly allowing a homophobic fear of penetration to stand in the way of proper medical care for kids who don't respond to miralax
An old man obgyn once told me, when I informed him that I was going off the pill, that he was sure he would see me soon, because I would change my mind because "women are happier on the pill."
Girls with autism and adhd are completely underdiagnosed and parents' concerns dismissed because the girls are too smart or too good at masking
I have friends whose doctors will refuse to even discuss treating infertility until they lose a certain number of pounds, quite literally refusing medical care on the basis of weight
Sure, there's a lot of misinformation on the internet, and you need to be careful and sift through it all. And at some point you'll need the input of doctors and tests to confirm your hunches, etc. (Which you may only have access to if you have $.) But how can you honestly look at this situation and NOT think the only solution is for us to research everything ourselves? To diagnose ourselves? To figure out what the best-practice treatment is so that you can question suggestions? When misogyny is so rampant in a Healthcare system, how can women ever make sure we're cared for properly? And if you're also poor, or uneducated, or fat, or bipoc, or trans, or a non-native-English speaker?!?! FORGET IT
I'll be over here in my internet groups where women put in countless hours compiling medical research with citations and sharing health conditions and treatments and experiences. Because the village witches have always been the ones to figure this shit out and also the ones to get blamed whenever something goes wrong—only now the village witches are compiling 100-page detailed guides on Facebook groups on how to combat iron deficiency, while the doctors refuse to even test our ferritin levels. I'll brave the medical offices when I need to, armed with my advance research to combat the bullshit I will inevitably encounter as I try to access to care I need

I think one of the things people overlook is not meeting expectations as someone with dyslexia and dyscalculia, because I have seen posts on ADHD but none on Dyslexia or Dyscalculia
More than anything, I was made to feel like a failure because of my dyslexia and dyscalculia
I was constantly told I was smart and evaluated as if I was neurotypical intelligent
But I would always struggle, I would always fail to live up to expectations because the thing about neurotypical intelligence is you are expected to be good at everything academic, maybe you excel at one thing, but you aren't really bad at anything, struggling with language or maths is never even considered for neurotypical intelligence
And there I was struggling to read, coming out as dyslexic and being hit with "but you're so smart" with varying levels of derision and confusion
Struggling with basic maths as people praised my intelligence and dismissed my grade as nothing impressive because it was what they expected of me, because they didn't see the anxiety I had over adding numbers together, they didn't see how my difficulty with numbers was covered up by my intelligence, I could do logic, I could do complicated problem solving, I couldn't tell you what 13% of 500 was without feeling anxious and freezing
People looked at my grades and they only saw someone smart, they didn't see how I struggled, they didn't see how I tried to meet expectations and fell short, because reading is exhausting and numbers make me anxious, they would dismiss my struggle because "you still did well, it's still a good grade" and it was, but it wasn't good enough
I was being compared to the neurotypical with the same predicted grades as me, the neurotypical who did better in all their exams than me, and I never met that expectation
They judged me as neurotypical and found me lacking as neurodivergent

I know this probably won’t make sense but:
Tumblr media
Im gonna try and make this make a little more sense:
Also ⚠️Spoilers for Volume 2!⚠️
Eleven: There is a clear connection that a lot of people have drawn between El and autism, which influence this a little, but I also feel that it makes sense with what we know about her character. Her not understanding customs that are supposed to be ‘normal,’ especially if it’s just a social rule that was made arbitrarily, her not following the rules if she doesn’t understand the rules or doesn’t know why the rule is in place, and her going partially nonverbal when overstimulated or under extreme stress are good examples.
Max: I feel like she had a lot of trouble with reading when she was a child, so she really latched onto certain things that she could read or comprehend easily, like presumptuous. I feel like a big reason she teases the boys for being nerds about stuff like Lord Of The Rings and DND is because she always had trouble with that type of stuff, and it would frustrate her to the point that she would just end up not liking it at all. I feel like after she comes out of the coma she opens up to Lucas about it and they end up reading Lord Of The Rings together. Also, about the letters, I feel like it becomes a lot easier for her to write concisely if she’s writing down something that she really wants to write, and has a lot of emotions in it.
Dustin: So with Dustin I feel like his main hyper-fixation is science. That’s why he treasures everything to do with it, why he is basically best friends with Mr. Clark, and why he’s so proud about it. I do think that’s ADHD is also why Dustin, a usually very smart student, got a near failing grade in one of his classes. You could argue that he just isn’t good at that class, but I think that it could be due to executive dysfunction, which is very common for people with ADHD, especially when it’s something that they are not interested in.
Steve: With Steve I feel like this is a more obvious opinion. I feel like a lot of people look down on him and judge him for being dumb and not knowing things or not getting things that other people get, and I think that could be very much contributed to the fact that there was something just simply different about him, y’know? Especially with those being two very much lesser known disorders back then. I also think that his parents know about this because they have the money and they obviously knew something was ‘wrong’ with their son, in their eyes, so they got him tested for a couple things both physically and psychologically, but they never told him about this and thought that if they ignored it then it would just go away, which is sadly still a very popular thing for parents of neurodivergent children to do.
Robin: A big part of this for me is the fact that her whole aesthetic is very reminiscent of both ADHD and Autism culture, but also the bad coordination (honestly same girl) and the whole ramble thing on is what sticks out to me the most with her. She’s very much the infodump type of ADHD, like I feel like whenever they’re just bored and business is slow I feel like her and Steve will just sit around and infodump about their favorite movies together so she like instantly clocks his ADHD the second they met which is a main reason as to why she was so quick to become friends with him (it’s like gaydar, but for neurodivergent people).
Eddie: Once again I feel like a lot of people look down on him or call him dumb because of the whole dyslexia thing and I feel like that’s a big reason as to why he’s failed high school twice. He’s probably a pretty smart guy, he just has a few things that make it harder for him. And with the autism thing, I feel like two of his main special interest are rock bands like Black Sabbath and DND. And I feel like he knows that he most likely has it because of his uncle, not because he got him tested because he probably couldn’t afford that, but because his uncle noticed that there was obviously something different with him and because he cared a lot about his nephew he looked into it and told him about it. I think that’s a big reason as to why he really owns being a freak and being different, because his uncle normalized it to him and made sure he knew he didn’t have to be ashamed of it. That really ties into the whole speech he gives in the second episode to Nancy, about him being a good kid and him willing to defend Eddie’s reputation with his life.
Will: So I feel like this one is the most complicated, and it’s kinda hard to explain. So for the dyslexia thing, I feel like when he can’t express his feelings verbally, I feel like instead of expressing them with written words like Max does he expresses them with art, like he does in the show with the painting that he paints for Mike. He finds it easier, and that’s also why he likes comic books more, because he can comprehend them a lot easier than written books. With the ADHD thing I feel I get this a lot more from his hyperfixation on DND more than anything. I know that for a lot of neurodivergent people sharing their hyperfixation/special interest can be a kind of love language, and I feel like that’s exactly how it is for Will. He tries so hard to keep his friends interested in it in season three because that’s a really big way that he connects with them, he finds it easier to express himself and his emotions when he’s playing DND. And with the whole autistic thing, it’s more of a thing you see in his social life more than anything. You can really see how much he tries to act ‘normal’ socially and how much he tries to fit in with people at school, which is really reflected in how he doesn’t have any friend at his new school. The main reason he had his friends in Hawkins was because they approached him, which is a common thing with autistic people.
Anyways I don’t know if this made any sense to anyone but me but those are my reasonings.
Also, if anyone from these communities has any problems with this post, feel free to tell me about them because as of now right now I don’t have any diagnosis for any of these things, and I really don’t want to be ignorant or insult anyone.
And if y’all have any thoughts on the matter then y’all can share them in the reblogs and replies as long as y’all make sure to be kind and to not be mean to anyone because they have different opinions (although if they say something ableist you have my full permission the lecture the shit out of them)
Anyways have fun with these ideas

So I’m dyslexic and yesterday I finally completed my Light Yagami cosplay. Now I present to you a death note au where everything is the same except Light is dyslexic (all the things included in this is stuff I personally struggle with as someone with dyslexia. This is meant for a joke so don’t take this too seriously. Joking about my dyslexia is how I cope with it)
(Spoilers for death note)
Teacher: can you translate the following sentence into English?
Light, who was never able to learn another language cuz words are hard: uhhh….no….
Light finding the death note: what’s this? Has some writing on the front… “D……I can’t read English. What’s with everyone wanting me to read English today?! I can barely read Japanese! Eh whatever, maybe I’ll take it home and google translate it.”
Later….
Light: death note? As in a notebook of death?
*Turns the page to see the rules section also written in English*
Light: for fuck sake-
Ryuk: you seem to like it-
Light: shut up I’m trying to read
Ryuk: You’re telling a god of death to shut up? Wait, are you still reading the rules?
Light: it took me forever to type it all into google translate
Ryuk: it’s been several days…
Light: I’m a slow reader, ok?!?!?!
Light:
Light: wait, did you just say you’re a god of death?
Tv: we’ve identified the suspect as 42 year old Kurou Otaharada
Light, writing: Kuo…no wait. Kurou Otahara. Wait hang on, Kurou Otahara. Fuck that’s the same way. Oh my god why is his name so hard to spell?! Kurou Otaharada. Yes!
Naomi Misora: my name is Shoko Maki. It’s written with the characters for shining and ko as in child space and key as in tree.
Light internally: perfect. Not only did she tell me her name but also how to spell it. As long as I don’t forget, she’s practically signed her life away
*later*
Light, internally: what happened? Why isn’t she dead? Did I spell her name wrong? No that’s impossible, she told me how to spell it. But then why is Ryuk laughing? She must have used a fake name
*also later*
Light: I’ll need some form of identification before we proceed
Light internally: perfect, this means I’ll be able to check her name spelling and see if she used a fake!
Naomi: oh well, um…
Light: yes?
Naomi: you see the name I gave you earlier, well…it wasn’t actually my real name. I’m so sorry.
Light, internally: yes! my dyslexia wasn’t the thing stopping me from being god!
Light: don’t worry it’s alright. To be honest I’m impressed by how incredibly thorough you’ve been. You’ve stayed one step ahead of me. But I suppose that’s just further proof of your capabilities
Naomi: so will a Japanese drivers license do the trick, then?
Light: sure
Light: *begins writing the name*
*an uncomfortable amount of seconds later*
Naomi: I’m sorry, you’ve been writing my name down for a while…is everything ok?
Light: oh it’s because I’m dyslexic
Naomi: oh ok
Light, finally handing it back: here you go
Naomi: thank you. Why are you checking your watch?
Light: oh, this? It’s because I’m also Kira
Naomi:
