#dystopian Hyrule

She Came from the Stars is a speculative minicomic that reimagines the myths and lore surrounding gods and mortals in the Legend of Zelda games. Hyrule is dystopian, and its goddess Hylia is more than a little scary. In a country ruled by a hierophant queen, what does it mean to be an outsider? Perhaps, before he became a demon king, Ganondorf may have once seen himself as a hero...

I love the direction that Cadence of Hyrule took with the Gerudo: mechanics and salvagers who live in a desert strangely littered with dusty engines, gears, and metal detritus. Their village looks somewhat futuristic, their homes include blueprints and books on tables, and their swords are replaced with wrenches.
It’s nice to see a timeline in which the Gerudo are responsible for cool tech. Where did all those engine blocks come from?

OC Lineup
For no good reason at all, a brief summary of my current OC Links.
Under the cut!
Hero of Times (with an s, yes)
As seen in my old as hills story Hero. He’s a five year old who was tricked into fighting Ganon while absolutely not being ready, his soul was trapped in a bottle for 1500 years after he was brutally murdered several times (he had fairies), he was reborn (not reincarnated unlike all the previous times due to the whole trapped like a poe for centuries) in a dystopian Hyrule with no clear memory but a lot of crippling phobias. He finds out when he’s fifteen (in his new life) that he needs to fight Ganon but the poor thing has absolutely no resource other than a very hands on (and bossy) Zelda, who’s not a princess and is herself almost as resourceless. He’s also constantly terrified of everything, including monsters (even little keeses) and swords – which is a just a BIT impractical in his situation. The only thing that saves him is discovering the ability to send his spirit to visit his past lives (thus my calling him hero of times) and, as it turns out, borrow some stuff from them. He lives in a dystopia where long eared Hylians have been killed off, and everyone is very malnourished and overworked from dawn till dusk with no medical attention available ever, and the life expectancy is under 30. He looks almost normal in that context: short dark blond hair, blue eyes, extremely skinny and quite short even compared to most of his past lives, and one thing that sets him apart from his contemporaries, slightly pointed ears.
'Old Link’
One of the past lives the hero of times visits. From that hero’s perspective, a particularly helpful and fatherly old man living a seemingly happy life after his own adventures are long over and who seems to know a much younger Princess well, enough to send her to fetch stuff, and who only seems to regret knowing Ganon is not gone for good. The story the hero of times doesn’t know hasn’t been written (yet) but it involves Zelink and royal politic shenanigans (with a Zelda that’s his own age, not the one the Hero of Times meets).
‘Nice Link’ and ‘Angry Link’
Also appear in Hero, one just gives the Hero of Times a bunch of food thinking he’s a ghost trying to move on and eager to help, the other is in a dungeon and just generally not trusting of the ghost-looking hero of times and in a very bad mood. They’re not defined further.

The Last Hero
As seen in No More, Not One Single Time More. A radicalized teenager who looks a fair bit like the Hero of Time, part of a revolutionary group called Din’s Justice and dedicated to his life’s purpose of ending the monarchy with them. He lives in a very dark age and the royal bloodline is corrupted beyond anything ever seen before in Hyrule, has been for generations with no end in sight, and every time a revolution looks likely, they trigger the curse by summoning an army of unbeatable monsters which the hero has to defeat to save the population (or at least as much of it as they can) with the end game being the ‘Princess’ getting credit for the final victory. This stops revolutions not so much because the population falls for the Royal Family being to thank for the save but because they’re terrified to trigger the King into doing it again. This Link lashes out verbally a lot (expect a lot of f-bombs), he has zero impulse control, but he cares a lot for people who aren’t royalty or nobility.
The Previous Eight
The previous eight heroes in No More(…). They all died fighting the Unnamed, which is the enemy the Last Hero also has to face in the end. At least one was a girl, but they’re not defined further than that.
Link of Given
Main Character for my WIP All That Hurts Us. Third generation immigrant to Hyrule, he’s what Hylians call a ‘Sea Folk’ because they arrived in Hyrule by the sea. For all intents and purposes, they look like black people in our world. They have round ears, as well. Link lives in a time where Hyrule is very knowledgeable of their own history thanks to archeology and linguistics to decipher old texts. They know of the heroes, they know of the curse, and they have a method of finding the hero ahead of the time that person would be needed, which is how Link is identified. They do not, however, have any record of a non Hylian hero so Link is considered the first one with a notable portion of the population believing the id method failed and that he’s an accidental or willing imposter. He’s kind, selfless and dedicated, but he desperately wants the curse to only affect him so he’s very overprotective of everyone and bossy, pushing away any attempt at help of even support. He’s also paranoid due to still waiting for the curse to manifest after 11 years, trains endlessly and doesn’t deal well with whatever he deems a waste of time. He’s impatient, kind of jumpy and generally just always roaring to go. He’s dealt with racism enough that he’s grown into being overly polite and formal to strangers in an unconscious attempt to defuse potential aggression that most wouldn’t show anyway. It’s self torture: the formality and over politeness mean it takes longer to express anything when talking. Wears his hair in braids, they reach just below his shoulders.
The Hidden Hero
Don’t have an actual name for her yet, only just starting to define her. She also lives in a dark age with a corrupted royal family, and also one where Hyrule is aware of the curse. In her case, the Spirit of the Hero opted for stealth: she is a cis girl, which in the mind of most, disqualifies her from potentially being the hero. She works with an imprisoned prince, a relative of the current ruling branch to save Hyrule when the King attempts to make a deal with demons. She’d probably be best buds with the Last Hero if they met but they live thousands and thousands of years apart. She is NOT one of the ‘previous eight’ mentioned above, she’s way before that, in one of the early dark ages.

Hey guys! I want to present to your attention one of my AU projects called “Dan the man: Next Gen”!
Tumblr media
The idea of creating this project came to me back in 2019 (even before Hyrule Park), when I was playing the games “Dan the man” and “The ninja warriors again”
Tumblr media
I found these games very similar and decided to combine them into a crossover, and at the same time come up with a sequel for Dan the man, because at that time Stage 9 had not yet been released.
Tumblr media
Over time, the idea evolved from a simple comic into a concept for a fan game (inspired by the people who make FNAF fan games). Of course, I’m not saying that I will really make my game based on Dan the man, I just want to tell the story in a slightly different format.
Tumblr media
As we know from the new stages of Dan the man, Dan is not the name of the main character at all, but the player who plays for him. And Jossie, having gone down to the secret library, understands that he lives in the game and why Dan cannot die. How will this relate to my AU? And so: this same Dan, having completed the game, decides to buy a recently released sequel with the subtitle “Next Gen”. And then he receives an email from the same Anna from stage 6. Dan hurried to the date, leaving the new game untouched.
Tumblr media
And Dan also has a younger brother named Rupert, who is a fan of everything futuristic. Seeing that the game acquired by Dan is made in a futuristic style, Rupert decides to go through it himself. In the game, the main character is the son of the Ginger Ninja (who we also saw in stage 6) and Rupert named him after himself.
Tumblr media
Synopsis of the game: the action takes place 20 years after the original game, in 2036 (technology in this universe is developing much faster than in ours🤷). The king was overthrown, and a real tyrant took his place, turning a small kingdom into a dystopian metropolis. Two decided to confront the cruel ruler: the robotic scientist Albert Mulk and the very son of the Red Ninja, who was named Rupert. Details about them can be found in the pictures above.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here is my Instagram guide with earlier works on this AU (Attention! Almost all publications are in Russian. Use a translator if possible)

In the story of Forbidden Chroma, there are 2 worlds. Monospace, a world of order & routine & Chromeria, a kingdom of wonder & adventure. While in the story, Powder spends most of her time in Chromeria, Monospace is her true home. I designed both of these worlds to be parallels of each other, not in terms of dystopia vs. utopia like you may think as Chromeria is not a perfect land as in my eyes, nothing in the world is truly perfect. Anyways here is a semi-brief summary of inspirations of each world. Also note that the images are what I imagine each world to look like & are NOT the final designs of the worlds.
Monospace: As the the name implies, Monospace takes inspiration from White Space from OMORI, however unlike White Space which is nothing more than a bedroom, Monospace is a massive dystopian style city. At the center of this massive city lies EVA Tower which is the home of Monospace’s monarch Polybius who is the main antagonist of Forbidden Chroma. The tower itself was inspired by Megalo Tower, the giant tower where you battle Ultra Necrozma in Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. Also, Ultra Megalopolis is the inspiration behind Monospace being a city of sorts as even though Ultra Megalopolis can’t be explored & is just a glorified hallway to the Ultra Necrozma battle, it is still technically a city-like area in Ultra Space. As for the EVA part of the name, that is short for Evangelion as Polybius is an angel-like figure themself & their ultimate end goal also relates to Evangelion in a way but I don’t wanna say too much as I don’t wanna spoil my own story. The Liberators are Polybius’s soldiers & the police force of Monospace. While I don’t have a design for them yet, I want them to also be a mix of angelic & demonic in design while being nothing but mindless soldiers for their boss, basically a fusion between Stormtroopers & the Exorcist Army from Hazbin Hotel.
Chromeria: My idea for Chromeria is to make it a fusion between Hyrule & Remnant from RWBY while also adding some cyberpunk elements to the major 4 cities of the kingdom. All of the major locations are named after colors which fit since this is the land of color compared to the black & white Monospace. The wildlands are also full of monsters that I will try my best to make designs of & maybe show off in the future. These monsters range from, slimes, orcs, magically enhanced animals, demons & more. Chromeria is also the home of two important groups: the royals which include Prince Lithas & Princess Arian & the mafia group known as "Drive Through Hell" or DTH Corps, lead by Kross Bones. DTH Corps & Kross Bones act as a major antagonist but not one on the same threat level as Polybius. This group is basically a mafia group that also has the typical "take over the kingdom" scheme as Kross wishes to turn the orderly Chromeria into a kingdom of mass chaos.
That is as much as I'll say for now as I'm still working out additional details to the world building & lore. For now, let me know what you all think about what I've got so far. Also any characters mentioned in this post will be shown off in future Forbidden Chroma related posts.

hey hey hey! omg your house looks so cozy so i couldn’t help but request a living room boy haikyu matchup!!! (i think this is the right place, but if not let me know so i can resubmit it right!!)
alrighty, so i go by marz!
• pronouns: she/her
• appearance: 5’4, dark brown hair mid back length with athletic build, brown eyes
• personality: slytherin, istp-a (assertive) 5w4, aquarius(sun), virgo(moon), taurus(ascending), tri type 584, alignment: chaotic neutral (from dnd but pretty cool)
• traits: adventurous, independent, creative, witty, book smart, (common sense? who’s that?) logical/problem solving, competitive
• faults: independent (double edged sword), lack of emotional intelligence, slightly insensitive and unempathetic(im working on it :’)) sarcastic, blunt (both double edge swords aswell), indifferent
• in-depth: at a glance, i can seem a little intimidating and cold. i hate small talk and i’m not very emotional, its not that i am shy (if need be i can summon social skills but lets face it in general i am socially awkward) i just am not much of a talker to most. (i’ve been told i’m enigmatic?) if you do know me though i tend to be louder, chatty, and more chaotic but not to extreme extents, i would say I’m pretty chill most of the time. i really value personal space and independence (the hermit life sounds really appealing(with a few cats too? sign me up.)) so i need someone who doesn’t need someone clingy or is dependent on me 24/7. on top of all that i am very blunt and sarcastic so i need someone who doesn’t get offended easily and knows that i’m not trying to be mean, it just comes out that way sometimes.
• other facts:
- i am vegan!
- hobbies: art (I’m in art school), video games (mainly stuff on switch like zelda and splatoon), table tennis (my skills have sky rocketed due to quarantine)
- i love thunderstorms
- i have a fear of boats/ships (the only thing i can handle is canoes)
- favorite anime: dorohedoro, cowboy bebop, and jjba, tales of earthsea (ghibli movie)
- i’ll listen to about anything (except country, the bane of my existence) but mainly rock/heavy metal, alternative/indie rock, jazz, classical
-i love to read (same as music, i’ll read anything you throw at me but my favorite genre is fantasy/dystopian)
- i love math (i think numbers make more sense than words) and science and despise history
that’s about it! thank you! <3

Hello and welcome, my dear Marz! Thank you so much for your kind words and for trusting me with your matchup. I’m glad you’ve been cozy! Let’s head over to the living room! ٩(◕‿◕。)۶
Tumblr media
We have a wonderful guest here!
Kuroo Tetsurou! (Runner up: Tsukishima Kei)
Kuroo here is a very complex character. He comes off as chaotic and rowdy, but he’s loved by even the most closed off individuals. He has a talent for winning people over without losing his own personality in the process. He’s incredibly understanding and caring, and this does not change no matter the circumstance.
- Okay so like
- Hear me out ok
- Kuroo will ensure that his presence is felt in your life, no matter how closed off you are
- If you’re indifferent towards him at first, he’ll be like “tsk tsk this won’t do, I gotta make an impression”
- In other words, he’ll get on your nerves on purpose if it means you’ll notice him more AHAHA
- He is, after all, the Provocation Expert™️
- That, or he’ll completely orchestrate situations that would force the two of you to interact
- scheming bastard
- Yes I feel an enemies to lovers vibe going on here
- Although don’t worry, Kuroo would never go too far as to pushing you away
- The reason I feel like Kuroo would be great at winning you over because I noticed you’re very similar to Kenma, with the cold and unreactive exterior and logical book smarts
- He’s been that shy, withdrawn kid in the past, so he understands you really well. And even though he was able to come out of his shell, he does not want or expect you to change this part of yourself, because he knows there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it
-  Will try any and all ways to win you over - whether it’s being a complete dork or letting out his more intellectual side. Man is pulling out all the stops here
- He’d be SO taken with how smart you are, especially since he’s a science nerd himself
- As soon as he gets to know your more chaotic side, he’ll feel like he’s finally struck GOLD
- He’d be your # 1 confidant and support system. He’d come over to your place just to play video games and geek out about whatever books you just read
- Whenever your unempathetic, blunt habits come out, he’ll be able to balance you out. Would probably explain the situation in a way that would help you understand better, without making you feel bad about your colder side
- Since he’s so used to Kenma, he knows not to invade someone’s personal space. He understands that you’ll be needing a lot of time for yourself, so he wouldn’t smother you with neediness. This just makes him treasure every moment he gets to have with you
- Kuroo is competitive himself!!! He’d revel in your interest in table tennis, and would take it as an opportunity to both bond with you and learn a new sport
- He’d know how to keep dates interesting. Museum dates? He’ll take you to Science Museums. Stargazing dates? He’d make it a small astronomy research session. Just staying in because of a thunderstorm? He brought all the coolest video games, movies, and books for you guys to consume
- Despite his confident and persistent attitude, he would 100% ask permission before initiating any kind of affection to make sure everything’s alright with you 🥺
(- also did you mention cats? HEHE Papa Kitty is here)
~
People often get upset when they hear thunder crashing from afar and the rain starts pouring. But not you.
You were bundled up in blankets burrito-style, working on your completionist journey for Breath of the Wild. This was your most peaceful state - every worry you had was drowned out by the sound of the downpour, and you were nestled safely in your bed, allowing yourself to immerse in another world. Today, that world was the kingdom of Hyrule.
The bliss of being in your element was near overwhelming, so much that you had said yes to your boyfriend when asked to come over. Kuroo was the only person allowed to disturb your peace. He doesn’t always ask for it, and when he does come over, he makes sure not to suffocate you with his presence.
You heard his footsteps coming up the stairs, paired with the rustling of paper bags of the food you had delivered. He came through the door singing a wordless melody, imitating trumpets during a grand entrance.
“Pa pa pa pa pum pa pa pa puuuuum. Lunch is served, your grace,” he jested with a small bow.
“Thank you, kind sir. And what is it exactly that you ordered for me?” You attempted a regal-sounding accent while unwrapping yourself and sitting up in bed.
“Chicken parmegiana.” He looked you dead in the eyes with a ridiculously serious look, waiting for some kind of reaction from you. You simply rolled your eyes.
“I could easily kick you out, you know that?” He knew better than to make an insensitive mistake about what you eat, especially since you’ve already been dating for quite some time.
“Falafel wraps,” he blurted out, pulling an innocent expression. It wasn’t often that he got to have you alone like this, so he doesn’t try to push your buttons for much longer. You raised an eyebrow at him, making him hold his hands up in surrender, “No cheese.”
“Perfect,” you praised. He shot you his killer smirk, making you yearn for him a little. He started unpacking the food. “Shall we watch something while eating?”
He scoffed, “You just want an excuse to cuddle, dontcha.”
You felt the blood rush to your cheeks, but you decided to feign toughness. “That was a one-time offer, Kuroo Tetsurou.”
He groaned in protest and immediately jumped on you, making the two of you fall over on the bed. “NO! Please spare some cuddles!” he yelled playfully, keeping up the grandness in his voice, then nuzzled into your neck. You couldn’t help but laugh at his childishness.
The two of you were silent for a few breaths. You could tell he was basking in the moment, since it was rare that he got to hold you this closely. You didn’t mind - his warmth kept the chill in the air at bay.
“I’m happy you’re here, Tetsu,” you quietly admitted.
He made space between the two of you so that he could look at you, eyes pooling with tenderness. “So am I.”
He intertwined his fingers with yours, and you gave in to the calm that currently existed for just the two of you, wonderfully undisturbed by the rest of the world.
~
I hope you enjoyed that, darling! So sorry for the long wait. Please feel free to drop by again sometime, even just to sit and have a chat with me!
Thanks for stopping by! (ノ´ヮ`)ノ*: ・゚

Zelda's Study: The sages of Breath of The Wild's Sword Monk Shrine pay homage to Ocarina of Time
Zelda’s Study: The sages of Breath of The Wild’s Sword Monk Shrine pay homage to Ocarina of Time
Breath of the Wild is the largest open-world Legend of Zeldagame that has ever graced our screens. Whether you love it or hate it, you cannot deny that this dystopian Hyrule is packed with an abundance of nostalgic Easter eggs and secrets waiting to be discovered. Some call-backs to previous instalments are more obvious than others but the offerings always bring a continuous flood of momentous…

Yup, these aren’t real places in the world! Well I’m sure the majority of you already knew that but, for the others that didn’t. Well there is something i got to tell you. You’re dum-just kidding! These are snapshots from the video game ‘Zelda: Breath of the Wild’. See, the reason I thought this was really interesting to look at was because it goes hand to hand with the project that we have in Digital Practice and Theory. Before I analyze these images, I’ll give you a short background description behind this game. The land of Hyrule was a utopian and exclusive kingdom that was loved by many sectors (or maybe you could say different terrorites) in the game. It was running through a peaceful phase with no sign of evil for thousands of years, thus eliminating war. Little did they know, their ignorance from evil, because they allowed themselves to be blinded by this ‘perfect world’ was only a ticking time bomb for evil to get stronger. One day, it exploded and they we’re unprepared and it led to the destruction of the Hyrule Kingdom. As you can see in the image, those are the ruins after the catastrophic event that took place. See the small hidden message behind this is that the idea of ‘perfect’ is flawed. There is no perfect or ideal world but merely an excuse for people to not attend to problems that are growing and pretend everything is alright *cough* climate change *cough*. Whoops went bit off topic there, but yes, they were unprepared and led to their destruction. Now our project is about this future ruin/city that we’re developing. The theme I’m trying to convey is a disturbed dystopian society which was brought to destruction by oursevles. I believe the greatest weapon in humanity is not the nuclear weapon but ignorance. For the people who’ve never played Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The protaganist in this game, Link, the protector of princess Zelda, is only the person that could save the Hyrule Kingdom from the ‘no turning point’. Just imagine, one person saving an entire kingdom from the evil took the life out of the Hyrule Kingdom. This is the kind of idea that I would really like to implement into my project. The idea of having hope, a way to overcome the dystopian society and bringing back peace and life into the world and amongst people. If you examine this further in a corny matter, the character tratis and ideals of Link is amongst all of us. Yes, idea of ‘one person can make impact’ does seem a little far fetched. But if you look at closely, its indirectly making an impact. Its giving people hope, keeping them eduacted and motivating people to walk out of their small box of ignorace. So yes, I really didn’t expect to get this philosphsical with a video game post but who knows, maybe I’m marketing this video game because its awesome. @Nintendo, I want my comission, thanks!

PowerZelda requires a little explanation!
The Incarnation of Sorrow instead of the Incarnation of Hatred; she echoes the dying lament of Hylia in an alternate universe where she was the one killed and absorbed by the Master Sword.
She is NOT a Princess in this Verse. She’s a general in the Hylian military
She’s also older; maybe in her mid to late thirties
Constantly looks pale and tired; she has bags under her eyes that Delta would charge you a fee for
Hella Eldritch Knight with Hella Dark Magic
She DOES stage a coup, which the Prince does see coming... and she DOES take Power when the door to the Sacred Realm is opened
And her relationship with the Triforce is... weird. Because physical power is not really her strong suit (She’s Dex-based and uses a rapier,) it all goes into her fucking charisma; this lady has a MAGNETIC effect on people. Her magic “infects” them and brings them around to her point of view, without her even meaning to
As a result, she doesn’t NEED to be cruel; the people who choose to serve her do so because they’re Charmed, in essence, and the most IMPORTANT thing in the world is to make this sad lady smile again. They’ll do whatever it takes and whatever she asks, because maybe she’ll be happy again?
It’s fucked up, yo. She doesn’t know it’s happening. When people start fervently agreeing with her, she just takes it as more proof that she’s right
I’d classify her as Lawful Evil, even though she really feels she’s doing the right thing for everyone; she STILL wants to destroy the world. She STILL manipulates people. She’s not Good, yo. Not even really Neutral.
Part of her, the part that’s not awash in that ancient sorrow, CLINGS to the hope that she’s wrong. That the Hero and the Royal will prove her wrong. Her dying words if you DO run her through are along those lines.
Tends to refer to people with fond monikers; my poor darling. My dear. You poor, brave boy
Holds herself to a strict code of conduct; she IS a general. Her Hyrule is more dystopian with patrols in the streets and curfews in place than a monster-infested wasteland. How this translates to what happens to the Gorons and Zora, I dunno yet??? But it’ll come to me eventually???
Yes, she DOES turn into a giant bird-dragon monster at the end of Ocarina of Time, and it’s HELLA.

As both oprainfall’s resident indie nerd and Nintendo fanboy, it fell upon me to cover the Indie Direct. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, cause sometimes the cup runneth over for indie fans, and sometimes it doesn’t. Thankfully, it veritably overflowed today, with nearly 20 games announced for a variety of genres. It was both old games coming to the Nintendo Switch, as well as entirely new and exclusive games. There’s a lot to cover, and a lot of reasons to be excited. So I’ll give a brief snippet of each title covered, in the order they were revealed, as well as release info. Buckle up, boys and girls.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
First up was an announcement that made me smile and groan at the same time. Creepy milk commercial aside, Cuphead is officially heading to the Nintendo Switch on April 18th. The reason I’m groaning is cause I already bought this on Steam, but would much prefer it on Switch. So I guess Studio MDHR gets my money twice. You can pre-purchase the game as of today, though it officially launches on April 18th, bringing beautifully animated chaos to your system.

Next up is Overland, a squad focused, turn-based apocalyptic strategy game. It looks like it has elements of tactical RPGs and a bit of Oregon Trail ethos, where you can’t save everyone. Since it’s set in such a dangerous climate, it shouldn’t surprise you that the farther west you go, the weirder things get. This randomly generated adventure is heading to the Switch this Fall.

I’m very happy that My Friend Pedro is finally heading to the Switch this June. I’m even more surprised that they announced it was a console exclusive, since the last time I demoed it, I could have sworn it was also headed to PS4 and PC. Regardless, if you love frenetic, coordinated violence on a comical scale and talking bananas, you’ll love this one.

I got to play Neo Cab at E3 last year, and I’m glad to hear it’s coming out soon. This visually distinct game involves trying to reunite with your best friend in a future ruled by a dystopian megacorporation. You’re the last human driver in city overrun by automation, and your job is to drive folks around while staying calm and unveiling the mysteries of the city. Neo Cab is out later this Summer.
When I heard this next game was about dog racing, I almost skipped it. But then I saw that The Red Lantern is narrative driven and has an interesting overall style. Developed by Timberline Studio, in the game you’ll engage in the Iditarod, fight the wilderness, tend your dogs, mend wounds and hunt to survive. Fend off bear attacks and get to your destination alive. Oh and if you like gyro controls, The Red Lantern has those as well. This unique adventure is out later this year.

I don’t normally think of top down when I think of survival horror, but Darkwood looks to be a strange and eerie adventure. In this title you’ll craft weapons, explore hideouts and hunker down at night while praying for the sun as monsters hunt you. Darkwood is also procedurally generated, so every time will be different. If that sounds like your cup of tea, it’s out this May.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Personally, I adore the style of Katana Zero. It has lush pixelated charm and lots of action. You play as Dragon the assassin. Armed with precognition, you will manipulate time and leave no witnesses. One hit and you’re dead though, but thankfully the game rewinds levels when you lose. And on the random side of things, in between missions you’ll talk with a therapist to get over your demons. Katana Zero is out April 18, though you can pre-purchase it today.
I admit I have yet to play any game published by Double Fine (though I do own a couple). But I’ve played many from Bandai Namco, and that’s relevant since this next game is by both. RAD is a top down adventure game where your primary power is the skill to mutate into horrid beasts to fight other horrid beasts. Sounds like my sort of game, so perhaps this will be the first Double Fine title I end up playing. RAD is out later this Summer.

If you had told me earlier today a game with a mix of post apocalyptic mayhem and pinball was gonna intrigue me, I would have called you a filthy liar. Well, now I know better, as Creature in the Well seems to mix both effortlessly. It features 8 dungeons, top down action adventure, pinball ricochet mechanics and lots of crazy. A giant creature has trapped your town in a sandstorm, so you have to slay it with over 15 weapons, each with different quirks. This fascinating looking title is out later this Summer.
I’m super excited that they announced that Bloodroots is out this Summer. Not only was this game a blast at PAX West, but it’s really a one of a kind action game. Everything in the environment is your weapon, which is good since one hit and you’re a gonner. Play as anti-hero Mr. Wolf on his mysterious quest for revenge. Can’t wait til I get my hands on this.
Pine gave me all sorts of Redwall vibes. This open world, 3rd person action adventure game adapts to your choices and features lots of strange creatures. Explore miles of terrain and engage with 5 factions of anthropomorphic animal men, including Moose and Gator. Scavenge, barter, harvest and craft this August.

Vlambeer got a lot of love, showing off 2 ports and one entirely new title. Super Crate Box is one of the ports out today. It features fast paced, multiplayer matches, which are exclusive to this version. Nuclear Throne is also out today, offering post apocalyptic fun solo or with a buddy. Lastly, the new title is Vlambeer Arcade, which features a growing catalog of bite sized games, including Ultra Bugs first. Think Space Invaders, except you use enemy DNA to customize your ship. Vlambeer Arcade is out later this year.

If you like 2D fun in the ocean, you’ll love Swimsanity! It features 1-4 player bouts with humans or bots. This multiplayer underwater shooter has more than 150 challenges, 8 game modes and 5 worlds. Choose classic or motion control and enjoy matchmaking and in-game voice chat. Out later this Summer.

When I think indie on Switch, I always think of Inti Creates. Today they announced the sequel to the wonderful Blaster Master Zero, Blaster Master Zero II. It features the Gaia-Sophia tank, a new blast counter mechanic, travelling across the galaxy to different planets and planetoids, new items and even a broad new cast of characters. Best of all, Blaster Master Zero II is out RIGHT NOW. I’ll wait while you go buy it.

The strangest reveal today was Stranger Things 3: The Game. Not a lot of details were announced for this isometric adventure game, other than local co-op, puzzle solving, and 12 playable characters. What I can say definitively is it releases July 4th which is also the same day that the 3rd season hits Netflix. Count me excited.

They saved the best for almost last. At first I thought it was just talking about new content for Crypt of the Necrodancer, but surprise! It’s actually a brand new game in that universe called Cadence of Hyrule. Team up with Link and Zelda and fight off the hordes of Gannon and friends. This wonderfully exuberant looking game (which I’m sure will be a console exclusive) is out Spring 2019.

The last thing to cover today is that there will be a sale for other indies already on Switch later today. Whew, talk about a ton of new reasons to be excited. Thanks for joining oprainfall for your coverage and stay tuned for more info about these games in the near future!
Nintendo’s Indie Direct Recap, Including Cuphead and Cadence of Hyrule As both oprainfall's resident indie nerd and Nintendo fanboy, it fell upon me to cover the Indie Direct.

Oh, for that "coin flip au," would the characters' personalities also be flipped? If I'm understanding this right, Hyrule would be a kind of dystopia. So I'm also wondering if the Links would fight for the kingdom out of loyalty to the beliefs and the princess, or would it be a sort of blind loyalty/naivity?
so bearing in mind that right now this au is in its VERY EARLY developmental stage, nothing like the botw au that i’ve been ruminating on for ages,
to get this out of the way first, hyrule isn’t necessarily a dystopia. are their ideals pertaining to foreigners dystopian? yes! absolutely! but would you walk into hyrule and think “wow, this is a dystopia”? no, probably not. it’s same old hyrule, on the surface. same hyrule castle, same hyrule field, same death mountain, same lost forest, etc. it’s the people that’ve changed, really.
and my thoughts didn’t necessarily go to “flipped personalities” for the links. like, think about it: flip vio and you’ll get blue, and vice versa, flip red and you’d get either blue or shadow, depending on how you’re looking at it. role reversal didn’t equate to personality reversal in my head. and thinking on this, i’m not sure whether i want to make the links all stem from one person, like in the manga, or make them four separate individuals coming together for a common cause. depending on which i do may kind of influence the second part of your question, about their motivations. either way, though, i think blind loyalty plays a BIG part in it, as well as ignorance. i’m honestly coming up with things as i write, so let me try and get some stuff down here.
-zelda, as a young, naive girl grieving the loss of her parents, new to her throne and her crown, isn’t actually the one who started the whole “exterminate the dark world vermin” campaign. and the dark world isn’t actually named the dark world, it’s lorule. see, her advisors, knowing a prime time to take advantage of her when they saw it, got the ball rolling, convinced her of it. though her mother died as a result of disease, her father was killed by an assassin of unknown origin; the advisors jump on that “unknown origin”, that key little phrase, turn around and say that they’ve just discovered that it was someone from lorule who killed him (completely false, by the way). and they use her grief and her anger to turn her against lorulians, to a degree, publicize the concept of a campaign against those “dirty” “barbaric” lorulians, and the overwhelming supportive feedback is the push that young angry zelda needs to give them the go-ahead. they coin lorule the “dark world”, as a way of alienating and othering them; could anyone of decent stock come from a place like that? deep down, zelda knows it isn’t right, but she’s young, and scared, and sad and angry and neck-deep in grief, and she uses her father’s death as a way to justify it to herself- and how could it be wrong with so many people in approval, right?
-green is probably the most naive-loyal one out of all of them. he’s had personal ties with the royal family and zelda since he was a baby, really, with his father in the guard and all. they’ve been playmates since they were toddlers, known each other since birth, grown up alongside one another- if zelda says something should be done, green trusts her wholeheartedly, and he’ll throw his whole soul and then some into getting it done.
-the rest are mostly dependent on them being separate people rather than from one, but let’s see;
-red is probably the most morals-aligned one, and maybe even the most religious (or maybe the religious title goes to green). he sees all this propaganda about how awful the “dark-worlders” are; wars over trivialities, infanticide, widespread famine, corrupt government, a cruel and apathetic god- you name it, someone’s used it to slander lorule, and it’s 100% false, and red 100% believes it. it’s been fed to him since he was little, as it was to everyone else. and he thinks, i have to go and fix this, this is terrible, these barbarians. you know the “benevolent master” slaveowner concept so prominent in the deep south, back in pre-civil-war times? that is, more or less, red’s stance on it. he thinks hes helping them.
-vio could, honestly, care less about the people’s state of affairs. his concern is resources, plain and simple. that should be our land, think of what we could do there, with all that’s available. if they want to run around killing babies and worshipping satan and bribing government officials, so be it- just go do it somewhere else.
-blue’s motivation is primarily military-related. they’re a threat, this land of magic-users and war-people, blood-crazed devotees to the gods of slaughter (or so they’ve been told). blue wants to keep hyrule safe, doesn’t want any of those terrible people coming into hyrule and spreading their ways- and meeting shadow only exacerbates that. because shadow is so POWERFUL. they’ve never seen a lorule magic-caster up close and personal. and seeing what shadow can do, seeing what he’s like, deludes blue into thinking that ALL lorulians are like that.
-and shadow, our wonderful protagonist, is lorule’s chosen defender. these hylians are just waltzing in and killing our people, taking our lands, declaring war with no provocation; it calls for an anti-hero, as it were, to go forth and keep the would-be heroes from toppling them. he’s an illegitimate son of the king, ganon: all the raw power that comes with the bloodline, plus a little extra chalked up to luck of the draw, but without the official status of heir that would otherwise make him too important to risk. he’s very, very bitter about that last part. he’s ganon’s SON and everyone KNOWS it, but no one will acknowledge it- but ganon is willing to forgo tradition and accept him as his heir, if he succeeds against the hylian conquests. so, with nothing better to do, in immediate danger and with a very nice light at the end of the tunnel, he accepts, is given an unofficial status at the top of the military ranks and access to everything he might need, and he goes off to defend his home.
anyway, there’s some preliminary worldbuilding on this au (which i need a better name for, btw). if anyone has anything else to ask about this please do!!! i need prompting to properly develop things tbh

I’m nearly two hours in and I’ve only managed to do one of the first four trials. This game is massive and the prospect of finding new loot vs. tough enemy strongholds makes for compelling gameplay. I love the new rune power up system; adds an entirely dynamic twist to puzzle solving, one that is not singularly linear in comparison to previous Zelda games. The possibilities seem endless, whether it’s charging into a fortified Bokoblin cove or carrying a metallic box with you across the map as a bludgeoning weapon, I’m stoked to continue seeing what’s in store with the new addition.
Not only that, but without giving spoilers, the story is completely engaging. Straight out of the dystopian box, Breath of the Wild starts the game continually asking: what the fuck happened to Hyrule? It’s great. There are plenty of gaps to be filled in with the imagination. I of course, at this point, have no fucking clue what happened to Hyrule, but the game has left me craving to keep looking for answers. Only 2 hours in and it’s immediately evident why this game has rocked the ratings boards with nearly perfect scores.
