I'm not sure if this is a stupid question to ask, but how do you write? More specifically, what inspires you?
i do it out of commitment to practice almost exclusively

I was trying to find discussions on earnestness (since lately I keep seeing that trait talked about as odd or laughable), and found this reddit comment:
"A person who [is earnest] says exactly what they mean and does exactly what they say. They don't try to manipulate or deceive. They don't hide their true feelings out of fear or to obtain benefit. Other words that could be used to describe this quality are authentic, genuine, pure of heart. It's a quality that is rare in the postmodern world, so it is really quite moving when you encounter a person who embodies this virtue."
That sounds like a pretty ideal person to me! Is earnestness/sincerity really that rare? Am I really that rare? Do I overwhelm people by being this way? Are others really that concerned at having a carefully constructed ~cool~ persona?
How has the idea of "cringe" become so invasive as to try to kill off any uniqueness to people's personalities? And how can anyone get to know you in the first place, if you do not actually show yourself? Do people not want to be known?
I don't get it.

I’ll take an earnest person over a hip person every time, because hip is short-term. Earnest is long-term. Earnestness is highly underestimated. It comes from the core, while hip is trying to impress you with the surface. ‘Hip’ people love parodies. But there’s no such thing as a timeless parody, is there? I have more respect for the earnest guy who does something that can last for generations, and that hip people feel the need to parody.

Although we tend to think of earnestness as a kind of naïveté, naïveté is nowhere among its definitions. Instead, earnest is defined as, at once, a form of potency and a portent, as ‘showing sincere and intense conviction’ and ‘a thing intended or regarded as a sign or promise of what is to come.’

people seriously pretending EEAAO is overrated suddenly bc it swept awards? it swept awards largely because it is very very very good. I cried like someone who's just had a religious revelation BOTH times I watched it bc it touched something raw and real and beautiful but it was also just very, very funny. everyone's performance kills and the concept is creative and interesting and doesn't distract from the emotional core. you guys are just contrarian.

low key very obsessed with sex-adverse Astarion. like he's The Thirst Companion. The fucking Only Fangs joke. All the smut fan content. And then it does a total 180 and he's like "actually my sexual identity was weaponized against me and i was forced to use it to lead hundreds of people to their deaths". It's just such a compelling and interesting twist on his character. I love it.

the thing about "callout/cancel culture" that convinced me it's rotten to the core is the dehumanisation you face once you become the subject of a campaign like that. a lot of criticisms of callout/cancellation attempts appeal to the humanity of the subject, pointing out that it's unfair and unproductive to treat a person, a fellow human being, regardless of how much harm they've caused and how genuinely unlikable they are, like that. but unfortunately the reality of being the target of a mob mentality often means facing the very isolating and traumatising experience of realising that you've ceased to exist as a person in their eyes. you're a representation of your transgressions, an embodiment of harm that needs to be erased like a blemish, a spectacle for entertainment, a means of earning social approval by publicly condemning and humiliating you in what quickly becomes a competition to see who can strike the blow that knocks you down so you never get up again. nobody cares about who you are outside of what you did. people make mistakes and hurt one another, but there is always the capacity for change, for regret and reparations. you are an irredeemable monster. you can't change. the only way to make sure you can't cause harm ever again is to neutralise you entirely. to drive you off and hurt you so badly that you never consider coming back. and it often succeeds. but it doesn't make the world a better or safer place. it just tells everyone that certain behaviours will be punished, so you should conceal them, and harshly condemn them in others so that everyone knows where you stand; nobody will stand up for you if you're accused and brought out for judgement, so you shouldn't trust anyone, and always be on the lookout to take them down before they can do the same to you. you're not creating a safe, welcoming community. you're creating a panopticon built on fear and punishment.
