One Piece: An Earth Day Focus

While environmentalism is not super focused on in One Piece, it does show up once in a while especially arcs like Wano and the post-Marineford Arc with the Grey Terminal and aforementioned Wano. The Green message there is subtle and the damage is often told through not only words but the environment. We often see how things became the way they are through imagery. 

With Grey Terminal it was through neglect and classism of the kingdom’s upper class, while with Wano it was the deliberate attempt of a mad man who wanted to destroy everything as a form of petty revenge and team up with a guy . However, both show and demonstrate how the environment’s exploitation can be another form of injustice in the world.

FOTD #034 : amethyst deceiver! (laccaria amethystina)

the amethyst deceiver is a mycorrhizal fungus in the family hydnangiaceae. it is found in most temperate areas across europe, asia & central + south + (eastern) north america.

the big question : can i bite it?? yeah !! this fungus is edible, though not necessarily choice.

l. amethystina description :

"the cap is 1–6 cm in diameter, & is initially convex, later flattening, & often with a central depression (navel). when moist it is a deep purplish lilac, which fades upon drying out. it is sometimes slightly scurfy at the center, & has pale striations at the margin. the stem is the same colour as the cap, & has whitish fibrils at the base, which become mealy at the top. it is fibrous, hollow, fairly tough when rolled in the fingers, with dimensions of 0.6 to 7 centimetres (0.24 to 2.76 in) long by 0.1 to 0.7 centimetres (0.039 to 0.276 in) thick. the flesh is without a distinctive taste or smell, & is thin, with pale lilac coloration. the gills are colored as the cap, often quite distantly spaced, & are dusted by the white spores; their attachment to the stem is sinuate—having a concave indentation before attaching to the stem."

It was a regular, snowy day in downtown New York. Ray was in the downstairs of the firehouse, fixing whatever new problem the Ecto-1 had come up with. Janine was reading some magazine with smart shopping tips while Louis was on the phone discussing taxes, the latter having piles of paperwork on his desk. Business during the holiday season usually slowed down, and that meant getting to spend more quality time with the guys. Peter and Winston were engaging in a friendly but competitive game of pool, and Egon was nowhere in sight. He mentioned something about “bringing a surprise” to the station, baffling everyone since Egon certainly wasn’t the surprise type. You sat on the couch, head propped up by your hand, watching as Peter lined up his shot.

"I never understood this game," you said with a yawn.

Winston had a small laugh and shook his head. "It's alright, kid, neither does Pete."

"Hey!" The other man said as he thrust his cue stick, completely butchering the shot in the process. "I just don't play this game often enough, alright, Z? I got no practice,"

You and Winston share a laugh at the expense of your colleague, Peter placed his hand on his chest in feigned offense. Winston took his shot, clearly doing a better job than Peter as the other man had scowled as the ball went into the hole. As the two continue playing, the sound of familiar footsteps enters the second floor. Turning your head, you smile brightly as you finally see your boyfriend Egon. His back was turned, preoccupied with refilling the snack cabinet in the kitchen. As he rummaged through the seven eleven bag, you took the chance of slowly sneaking up behind him to give a surprise hug. The two men playing pool had paused their game to watch you, amused from the sight of seeing you crouch up behind their friend.

“Gotcha!” You yelled as you wrapped your arms around Egon’s torso and chest, placing your chin on his shoulder. Unexpectedly, he was completely frozen, unlike how he would usually turn around to return the hug. Your expression quickly morphed into one of confusion as the seconds passed and he stayed completely still.

“Anyway, Elon, I want you to meet-” You whip your head to the left to see Egon standing next to Ray, both the men having mildly concerned looks on their faces.

“...(Y/N)?” The man you were hugging spoke, his voice only slightly different from Egon’s but you could tell it wasn’t your boyfriend. Hastily taking your arms off him, you spew out apology after apology, face fully red.

“I’m so sorry! God I- I should’ve known the second you didn’t hug me back I-”

Elon waved his hand with a laugh, the other guys in the room except Egon cracking up as well. “No matter, no matter, at least I know my little brother is well loved,” Elon took the liberty of pulling you in for a hug this time, and just like Egon he was surprisingly good at giving them.

Egon’s cheeks turn a light pink color from his brother’s statement as he pulls you in for a hug and forehead kiss. Elon had headed over to the billiard table to greet the two men who ended their pool game. The mood in the room turned joyous as all the guys had not seen Elon in a while, making this occasion a real treat.

“Sorry, Eggs, he really does look a lot like you,” you whispered. He smiles before putting his lips on yours, causing your face to go red once again. Getting kissed by Egon certainly did not get old no matter how many times it happens.

“It’s alright, (Y/N), I missed you too.”

Ray called out, “Hey, lovebirds! Get over here before we finish all the pizza.”

You pull away from Egon and adjust his tie, taking his hand and walking over to the others to get a fresh slice of pizza.

Thinking about Life is Strange 2 and the absolute dust it got paid compared to the other games in the series. It's the ONLY video game I've ever played where someone in the story has Special Magic Powers, but it's not you. It's your little brother. And your father has been killed in a police shootout, and your little brother is just a kid who is so confused and terrified that he levels a whole block with a telekinetic boom. And then you, a teenager just a few years older, have to guide him to safety and try to parent him and help him use his powers for good while also dealing with the same traumas in your own life.

Also, there's a level where you just clip weed buds. Phenomenal game.

the destroying angel (more specifically, the european destroying angel amanita) is a basidiomycete fungus in the family amanitaceae. this species occurs in europe, often associating with deciduous & coniferous trees.

the big question : can i bite it?? god, no- this fungus is deadly poisonous !! the cap alone contains amatoxins to kill an adult human.

a. virosa description :

"amanita virosa first appears as a white egg-shaped object covered with a universal veil. as it grows, the mushroom breaks free, though there may be ragged patches of veil at the cap edges. the cap is initially conical with inturned edges, before becoming hemispherical & flattening with a diameter up to 12 cm (4+3⁄4 in). the cap often has a distinctive boss; it is able to be peeled & white, though the centre may be ivory in colour. the crowded free gills are white, as is the stipe & volva. the thin stipe is up to 15 cm (5.9 in) tall, with a hanging grooved ring. the spore print is white & the spores egg-shaped conical & 7–10 μm long. they stain blue with iodine. the flesh is white, with a taste reminiscent of radishes, and turns bright yellow with sodium hydroxide."

(ok except Abby maybe but I'll save her dw) #ok now imagine them as teen magical girls #a normal 2000's/2010's bff group who also kick ass in pretty dresses #now imagine mai and puppet being magical beings from another planet #kinda like the winx club characters that look completely human but they're fairies n stuff? there's a reason why the twins can look like- #Normal humans tho: their true form is a being like Maipett. they're two maipetts #BUT they can shapeshift to look just like any living beings they see #so they can very easily blend in with humans #now what are these beings? basically they're magical dudes that control the “Shadows”. evil spirits that can destroy life in pretty much- #any abitated planet in irreversible ways #one day some shadows breached from the maipetts control and directed themselves to earth as it was the closest living planet #so mai and Charlie as the strongest most able shadowseekers (group of specialized Maipetts with the mission to bring back Shadows to- #security in case of breaching) got a mission to go to earth find the shadows and bring them back. even destroy them if necessary #now what's the group mentioned earlier have to do with all this? #after saving lily from a shadow attack her and mai become “friends” (keep in mind Mai doesn't really know what friends even are) #but with time they do become very close #and since the shadows are never way too far from each other meaning that other shadows might be hiding in the same town Mai wanted to keep- #Lily safe. so she gave her a tiny rock that contains Maipett powers (Mai likes to keep them on her belt for decoration) and showed her- #basic attacks to at least keep Lily safe in case she gets attacked by a shadow and Mai happens to not be there #after a while tho Abby (Lily's roommate and childhood friend) finds out about her friends' powers and she thinks it's soo cool and things #but Lily and Mai especially aren't so cool about it cus pretty much all the situation is supposed to be a secret #so they and abby make a promise: Abby gets a magical gem and of course some lessons how to use it's powers and she keeps the secret #Abby agrees and she joins the group (that remains unnamed until the others join) #Toddy and Maggi were found by Charlie in the meantime.
