Ghost Toys with Customers
Toys “R” Us, at 130 East El Camino in Sunnyvale, has been on television’s That’s Incredible and other shows. Psychics have said that the store is haunted by the ghost of a man who farmed the land on which the store was built. The man accidentally cut his leg with an axe while chopping wood and bled to death on the spot. The ghost is an apparently playful poltergeist, and employees often have opened the store in the morning to find the aisles with toys or have balls bounced down the floors or teddy bears float down from the shelves. The ghost also follows people into the restrooms and turns on the faucets. Visit aisle 15C-it always seems to smell of freshly cut flowers. The store managers are happy to live with this mischievous ghost, as their sales climb every time a story is printed about the haunting.
The Haunted Toys “R” Us
On El Camino in Sunnyvale there is a haunted Toys “R” Us store. The story goes that many decades ago when the whole Bay Area was still orchards, there was a worker on a farm who was in love with the orchard owner’s daughter. It is not known whether she loved him back or not, but one day he was told that it could never work out between them. He went into the field and started chopping wood to relieve his frustration, but in his fury he wasn’t paying attention, and the axe missed the log and went into his leg. He bled to death by the woodpile.
Later, a Toys “R” Us was built in that area. Employees have reported coming to work in the morning and finding toys “played with” when no one was in the store. A few even have stories about being alone in the stock room and seeing boxes move, feeling hands or someone steadying their ladder. It seems that the ghost is lonely and not angry, and no one has reported injuries because of the hauntings. -Jocelyn Laney
A Former’s Daughter Story
I live in the Bay Area, and due to its in-depth history, there are many local legends. One story has to do with a Toys “R” Us in Sunnyvale. Back in the mid 20′s when the town was a small farming town, a large farm ran with the help of “field-Hands” to take care of the owner’s crops. One such man was named Johnny Johnson.
He had fallen in love with the farmer’s daughter, and would spend the days working and thinking about being with this lovely lass. One summer day, while chopping firewood with an axe, his attention wandered off when Elizabeth Yuba (his love interest’s name) crossed the area he was working in. In a freak accident, the axe missed his mark, and hit his leg instead. Due to his wounds, and being far from help, he died. In that very spot, Toys “R” Us erected their store, and from day one, its employees had the displeasure of experiencing many ghostly incidents-boxes dropping, toys falling off the shelf and many other events on these grounds.
The night crew (needed in order to clean up the flying toys) has witnessed glowing objects and other strange events. The story has been featured on a few paranormal TV shows. -Matthew Bergendahl

I haven’t posted in a while so thought I would refresh the blog here. So nice to have in person zine fests again!! It’s been 3 wild years. This was at San Francisco zine fest in Sept 2022 which is forever one of my favorite fests and I am always so so grateful they let me have a table space :’) everyone was super sweet and nice as always. love my bay area community!
In a couple weeks I will be doing East Bay alternative book/zine fest (EBABZ) which is at Berkeley this year, AND the following day i will be at the first ever Albany zine fest. (12/10, 12/11) this is the same weekend as the East Bay Print Sale which I highly recommend if you are in the bay!!
To top all that off, I just returned from my first trip abroad since the pandemic, my postponed-from-2020 Wales trip, and I will be working my hardest on my fourth travel illustration zine in the series to debut for those shows :0 so I will finally be working on zines again - woah!! wish me luck
I have a few other zine ideas knocking around... we will see....

Mini pony and cathedral cat star in Norfolk Christmas cards

Mini pony and cathedral cat star in Norfolk Christmas cards
If you’re one of those super-organised folk who likes to get ahead, you might be interested to know you can now get your hands on a bevy of beautiful Christmas cards, created by local artists for Norfolk charities.
From the county’s most-famous pony, to corgis, a songbird and Norwich Cathedral’s cat – the breadth of artistic endeavours is incredibly varied.
Here are some of our favourites.
Jack Brock enjoys Christmas with Bunny and Bertie (Image: Archant)
Jack Brock
The rescued miniature Shetland pony from Wymondham has raised many thousands of pounds for dementia charities – and is now starring with a corgi in his latest fundraising Christmas card.
Every year Jack and his owner, Ali Stearn, raise many thousands of pounds for dementia charities and at Christmas Ali turns one of her paintings of Jack into a charity card. This year the painting ‘Remembering loved ones at Christmas’ shows Jack in his candlelit stable, alongside a corgi – added as a tribute to the late Queen.
“Jack received a letter from the Queen’s representative in Norfolk to thank him for his work in during Covid lockdown,” said Ali.
Jack is used to the limelight as, in addition to his roles as a family pet, dementia ambassador and care home visitor he is also hired to carry confetti at weddings.
He’s known across East Anglia for his visits to care homes, and during the pandemic Ali took him on window visits to cheer up care residents and staff.
Last year he starred on Hello magazine’s Instagram feed – between posts about David Beckham and Jennifer Lawrence. And this year he won a fancy dress prize in this year’s Aylsham Show, dressed as a royal corgi.
Jack always plays an important part in the family’s Christmas, even hanging his own stocking with Ali’s children Bunny and Bertie, and joining them for Christmas dinner.
This year Jack’s card is in aid of Dementia UK but he has also starred on a charity card Ali created to raise money for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust. She was just three when her mum married jockey Bob Champion, who became her stepfather.
The cards are available from jackbrock.co.uk
Winter song – a Christmas card for Norfolk Wildlife Trust (Image: Sarah Bays)
Wild Things
One of the first charity Christmas cards ever created was sold in aid of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust in 1930. For more than 50 years local artist Jack Harrison painted a picture for the trust to use for the occasion.
The tradition continues to this day, with the work of several Norfolk painters and print-makers featured on cards for Christmas 2022.
They include starry seed heads, a skein of wildfowl flying over a wintry, watery landscape, and a songbird perched on a berry-laden branch, all designed by artists living and working in the county including Max Angus, Sarah Bays, Niki Bowers, Colin Burns and Angie Lewin. The money they raise will help protect and restore the county’s wildlife and wild places.
The cards are available from the Norfolk Wildlife Trust website norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk/christmas
Norwich Cathedral Christmas card (Image: Bill Smith)
Cathedral Cat
Norwich Cathedral Close in the snow is pretty much the perfect festive scene so it is no wonder the Christmas cards on sale in aid of the cathedral this year feature its beautiful spire, windows, choir – and cat.
One shows the choir singing in the snow outside the building, and another shows Budge the cathedral cat, cat-napping beside the cathedral Christmas tree.
The cards are available from the Cathedral Gift Shop and all profits go towards the maintenance of Norwich Cathedral.
St Martins chef Robert Lamacraft runs art sessions with residents (Image: St Martins) Helping the Homeless
Robert Lamacraft works as a chef for Norfolk homelessness charity St Martins – but also runs art sessions with residents and has helped them create Christmas cards. One of the charity’s fundraising cards this year was designed by residents of its Highwater House, who are experiencing homelessness, poor mental health or addiction. “Creative activities like art are a successful way of engaging our residents and building up their self-esteem,” said Helen Baldry of St Martins.
The cards are on sale at the St Martins Donation Station in Anglia Square, Norwich, the Original Christmas Card Shop at St Peter Mancroft Church, and online at shop.stmartinshousing.org.uk
One of the cards on sale in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) (Image: East Anglia\’s Children\’s Hospices (EACH))
Helping Children
Internationally-renowned Norfolk artist Lucy Loveheart has created two Christmas card designs for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
The charity cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions and supports their families. Its three hospices include The Nook, in Framingham Earl, near Norwich, and this year’s cards include a snowy village scene with the message “Christmas Greetings from Norfolk.” All 20 designs are on sale at the charity’s 44 shops across East Anglia and can be bought online at each.org.uk/shop
Norwich Cathedral by Gerard Stamp – a Christmas card sold in aid of the countryside charity CPRE Norfolk (Image: Gerard Stamp)
Country Scenes
A fine watercolour painting of Norwich Cathedral, by artist Gerard Stamp, is helping raise money for countryside charity CPRE Norfolk.
Its other Christmas card this year is a beautiful photograph of a heron in the snow, taken by by Norman Wyatt, of the Chet Valley Photography Club. The cards are available at cprenorfolk.org.uk and at the Original Norwich Charity Christmas Card shop in St Peter Mancroft church, Norwich.
A stained glass angel in Garboldisham church is the Norfolk Churches Trust card this Christmas (Image: Kate Griffin)
Ode to an Angel
A stained glass angel which glows from the window of Garboldisham church is raising money for Norfolk Churches Trust this Christmas.
The angel is part of a window created in memory of George Molineux-Montgomerie, who died fighting for his country in France in 1915. It was photographed by Kate Griffin, and was one of the winning images in the 2020 Bike Ride photographic competition.
The Norfolk Churches Trust supports churches of all denominations across the county, helping keep the county’s treasury of churches open and in use at the heart of their communities. It also cares for 13 redundant churches.
Its Christmas card is available from norfolkchurchestrust.org.uk/product/christmas-card-2022
The 2022 Redwings Christmas card (Image: Redwings)
Horses
The UK’s largest horse charity is based in Norfolk, with visitor centres in Aylsham and Caldecott near Fritton. Redwings began in Norfolk in 1984 with the rescue of a single pony and now cares for 1,500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules.
Its Christmas cards are available from shop.redwings.org.uk
Bethlehem
The John Aves Education Project was founded in memory of Norfolk clergyman John Aves who collapsed and died, aged just 52, in Bethlehem, while helping in a refugee camp. It has helped more than 70 young people living in Palestinian refugee camps go to university to study courses such as science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, midwifery, nursing and engineering.
John served in Norfolk churches including Attleborough and St Peter Mancroft and St Giles in Norwich and the charity his family and friends launched in his name is selling Christmas ornaments made from fragments of broken glass collected from the streets of Bethlehem as well as cards – one designed by John’s cousin, wildlife artist Bridgette James. jaep.org.uk
Robin by Norwich artist Bridgette James is one of the Christmas cards sold in aid of the John Aves Education Project (Image: Bridgette James)
For lots more charity Christmas cards visit the Original Norwich Charity Christmas Card Shop in St Peter Mancroft Church, Norwich. Around 100 volunteers will be selling cards, Monday to Saturday, 10.45am-3pm, until December 18 with every penny raised going to charity.

Roy ayers albums ranked
Tumblr media
Further, Nielsen findings suggest that as a demographic these listeners serve as a worthwhile target for upscale brand marketing. In 2015, those album sales comprised 46% of jazz music consumption, an indication of a willingness to pay not found in other genres. While jazz listeners make up a relatively small part of the overall music consumption audience, Nielsen research shows that most of that is attributable to physical copy sales. Though nobody expects Ayers’ Lifeline to do Kind Of Blue numbers, the market this reissue caters to is known as one that pays for music. Reissued and kept in print by Sony Legacy, the 1959 jazz classic was the tenth bestselling vinyl album of 2016, shifting some 26,000 copies last years and tens of thousands in prior years. The latter record has been a staple of that particular chart, spending some 121 nonconsecutive weeks there. In recent years, Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart has featured wax reissues of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme and Miles Davis’ eternally popular Kind Of Blue. New jazz releases rarely count as moneymakers these days, yet reissue projects like this have the potential to do well, with deluxe editions, remastered recordings and new vinyl pressings appealing to collectors and new listeners alike. ( Lifeline collaborator Birdsong has a sample legacy of his own, with his 1979 track “Cola Bottle Baby” providing the musical foundation for Daft Punk’s “Harder Better Faster Stronger.”) Case in point, “Running Away” is responsible for tracks by A Tribe Called Quest, Common, and Big Daddy Kane. A favorite among beatmakers and producers, Ayers’ discography has served as an extensive sample source for numerous artists including Mary J. Bear is also scheduled to play Electric Forest Festival in Rothbury, Mich., June 23 through 26, and Seattle’s famed Capitol Hill Block Party on July 23.The pioneering vibraphonist oft-danceable fusion of jazz and funk proved popular not only in his 1970s and 1980s heyday, but had a profound influence on the R&B and hip-hop to come. After a performance at Smokin Grooves Festival in Los Angeles in mid-March, the Mahal tour kicks off April 29 in Cincinatti, Ohio, before wrapping up May 11 in Houston, Texas. tour in support of Mahal this summer, bookended by a handful of festival appearances. “To have them live on that record feels grounded, bringing a communal perspective to the table.” “I wanted to make a record that featured more musicians on it than any other record of mine,” Bear said in a release. Mahal follows Toro y Moi’s critically acclaimed 2019 album Outer Peace and features appearances from visual artist and musician Sofie Royer, Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Neilson, Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo and jazz duo the Mattson 2. “Online trends that border cringe start to feel overused.” It’s an atypical sonic palette for a song about becoming swept up in the confusions of day-to-day life - but Bear’s breezy, almost nonchalant mode of confronting these emotions feels more like an act of radical defiance, rather than one of apathetic resignation.įlashback: Tina Turner Covers Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson on Debut Solo Album “East Coast friends fill me in, I know you get the early scoop,” he sings. Over an ambling, velvety beat that evokes the easygoing acid-jazz grooves of funk powerhouse Roy Ayers, Bear laments the mundane anxieties of 21st century living. Ayers began his career as a post-bop jazz artist, releasing several albums with Atlantic Records, before his tenure at Polydor Records beginning in the 1970s, during which he helped pioneer jazz-funk with his band Roy Ayers Ubiquity. The lighthearted video accompanying the song, directed by Brendan Nakahara, pays homage to Bear’s adopted hometown, displaying ample footage of San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate and Bay Bridges interspersed with clips of the musician and a group of friends skateboarding, riding in GoCars and grabbing dinner at Oakland hotspot FOB Kitchen. Roy Ayers (September 10, 1940) is an American funk, soul, and jazz composer and vibraphone player. Toro y Moi, the musical project of songwriter and producer Chaz Bear, has released “The Loop,” the third single from the Bay Area-musician’s upcoming album, Mahal, out April 29 via Dead Oceans.

clowning around?
This is a digital photo of a slide scan the lab developed that was made into an Interneg and then was printed to a foam hard board so that I could mount it on a wall. The Interneg I fear, is lost forever as I have no plans to go through my film box of negs or slides anytime soon. Some years ago I took my Olympus Omd em5 out and laid this on the carpet and took another shot of it with the digital camera to get the final seen above.
There is a little town on the delta in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area known as Port Costa. A fun place to see a little bit of the Bay Area that is trapped in a time warp of sorts.
This was actually a gift bag for sale in a little shop in the town and the glass was very old and wavy which explains the horizontal lines and some other splotches. In my opinion it was the imperfect made perfect with a little luck.
If ever I wanted to be remembered by a particular photo this would be the one.
I don't expect it to garner many notes as it's not blessed with over the top editing, taken with a drone, or developed with luminosity masking and so on. It's not grand or hip...but I love it!
Chas
(exact date this was taken is unknown but I bought my film camera in '88 or '89 which is close enough)
