"2 Deep" is a song by the American hip hop duo Gang Starr, which was released on the album "Daily Operation" in 1992. The song was produced by DJ Premier and features verses from both members of Gang Starr, Guru and DJ Premier. The album "Daily Operation" was Gang Starr's third studio album, it was released on April 14th, 1992 by Chrysalis Records. The album was well received by critics and is considered a classic in hip hop. It features the hit single "Just to Get a Rep" and "2 Deep" is considered a fan favorite and one of the most memorable tracks of the album.

Gang Starr was an American hip hop duo formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1985. The group was composed of MC Guru and DJ Premier. Gang Starr is considered one of the most influential and respected hip-hop groups of all time, and they are known for their jazz-influenced beats and socially conscious lyrics that reflect on the struggles of inner-city life and the importance of self-awareness and self-empowerment. The group released six studio albums throughout their career, before the passing of the MC, Guru in 2010.

Mobb Deep - Survival Of The Fittest (Loud Records - 1995)

Survival Of The Fittest de Mobb Deep est un morceau suffocant, comme d'ailleurs l'ensemble des trois premiers albums du duo (Juvenile Hell, The Infamous et Hell On Earth), acmé du rap hardcore new-yorkais des années 90. Leur impact sur le son global du hip-hop à cette époque fût énorme et on ne compte plus les albums où les producteurs ont essayé de reproduire les productions sans concessions de Havoc (beaucoup aidé par Q-Tip). Le morceau est genial par son minimalisme: une boucle de piano piquée à l'introduction d'un morceau de jazz ("Skylark" par Al Cohn And The Betty Harris Trio) enrichie de samples de quelques mesures de cuivres récupérées au Kashmere Stage Band et un beat énorme programmé par Q-Tip.

Le maxi à l'avantage d'offrir un remix complétement différent, beaucoup plus doux, avec un break de batterie récupéré sur The Mixed Up Cut de Clyde McPhatter, des choeurs de Crytal Johnson et une boucle soul samplé chez Al Wilson. Pas de changement des textes par contre, que Havoc et Prodigy enchainent avec leur diction "ligne claire" pour décrire sans concession ni glorification la vie des afro-américains dans les ghettos.

Pour la petite histoire, le duo, loin d'avoir gagné ses médailles de gangsta rap dans la rue ou en prison, s'est rencontré dans une école d'art de Manhattan, la High School of Art And Design, pépinière d'artistes de talent.
