Finally, after waiting for so long….
THERE IS AN EASTWARD DLC!!! 🎉🎉
youtube
My jaw physically dropped, I think I might start crying of joy. I’m honestly at a loss for words because of how AMAZING this looks!!!!!
It seems to be more of a farming simulator like stardew valley and less plot focused, which I love. And of course, The visuals look stunning as always.
I am curious as to when it takes place in relation to eastward, because Sam is still young and not end of game Sam, Alva is alive, but both daniels are there? PLEASE GIVE ME ANSWERS PIXPIL 😭😭
Anyways, it says in the description of the YouTube trailer that Sam and John are starting a new life as farmers. I CANNOT wait to see where this goes!!!!

I'm coming back to the theory about Solomon (or a least, some version of Solomon) being Lee and Alva's grandfather. Uh. I didn't know what to think of that at first, it doesn't seem that evident, the main threads are
Solomon and gramps are both geniuses with machines
both came from Ester City, Solomon in fact seems to be the singular person who can get in and out of Ester City (which could be pretty damning evidence, but the fact is still that there's little else that really draws a clear line from Alva and Lee to Solomon)
Solomon and gramps are both somewhat knowledgeable on the MIASMA
but. I rewatched part of Solomon's speech today while trying to remember how he speaks, and I found this... somewhat interesting. There are older versions of Solomon that share Lee's character quirk of obsessing over fate and believing in prophecies

I don't know if this is just coincidentally one of Eastward's nebulous themes, or it's intentional. BUT... considering these characters are introduced in the same arc of the story, both being in New Dam, it could very well seem like something was being set up there
also...?

in conclusion: ?????

Eastward thoughts (spoilers)
It’s interesting how Earth Born becomes an echo of Eastward. Things like the princess in the tower, and the repetitive nature of the game mirrors the constant destruction/and rebirth that’s happening in the world because of the miasma.
Guy, from the original Rocket Knight Legion, created the Earth Born game. I’m not sure if this means the game is meant to create a mythology that affects the culture of the people in the world (and encourage someone to bring a clone of mother to the tower?)
I’m not Chinese or Buddhist but I’m sort of assuming that’s some of the stuff with Alva’s Buddha hand fans and trying to cure the Miasma- it’s about trying to find an end to the cycle of life and death. (Could be totally wrong though.) Trying to understand the story through the lens of a reincarnation allegory at least feels like it’s helping me process some of the themes.
I’m assuming the Monkollywood monkeys are from an original experiment to genetically engineer lifeforms? This might also be why so many animals in the world are bizarre hybrids. Did Solomon film the Earthborn show with the Rocket Knights? And the old monkey who played the monkey on the show was one of the first intelligent monkeys, and possibly because of his experience on the set he’s born a culture of filmmakers?
In general, re: Earth Born, I like when fictional worlds have their own fictional pop culture and mythology.
Memory and repeating cycles are such major themes in the story. I wonder if the fridge was meant to help mother get her memories back.
Is Frank of the Rocket Knights an experiment as well? It sounds like they were investigating immortality. (I don’t think he is the same as a miasma zombie but I have no idea.) Frank’s codename is cleric because Clerics can revive the dead.
After the Miasma wipes a town out, does the human factory repopulate the area? And Charon delivers the Miasma?
I still think it’s cool how John is represented by the frying pan - something he uses offensively and uses to nurture. John is all about acts of service.
They did Alva and Isabel dirty.
I’m still really moved and disturbed by Greenberg. I think the game did an incredible job of making this location impossibly dreamy and charming. I was so invested in the community drama of trying to set John up with Uva. The ending was devastating, and made me genuinely tense to enter any of the other factories. I think it was a powerful choice to have something like this upfront- it establishes a dark tone, and forces us into the story. And it gives such a punch to later scenes, like going to Old Town for the first time and seeing miasma zombies.
And I love how the currency was salt. I know how salt has been a currency in the past. I think it’s a great example of how focused the world is on survival. Currency needs tangible value.
I’m kind of disappointed with the ending tbh, maybe because of how I initially interpreted it? I dunno.
That’s all for now! I already started replaying the game.

So. I played the first little bit of octopia last night….
It was obviously AMAZING!!!! 😭🩵
Seriously though, I only got through like the first three or so days and I already think it’s the most perfect DLC for eastward. So I made a list of my little observations and details I really liked and just my general first impressions!!!!
• the graphics are SO ADORABLE like obviously the animation in the backgrounds and characters and stuff is stunning, but I just love how all the little details look- like the inventory, the little sun and moon animations when the day ends, the health bar, it ALL just matches this really cute aesthetic so perfectly
• the very beginning of the game, when it’s the little story text thing similar to what each chapter in eastward ended with. Oh my god that was the PERFECT way to start the game. Just beautiful.
• SAM NAMING THE SCARECROW MAYOR HOFFMAN?!!?!? HELLO???? LIKE I CANT BE THE ONLY ONE WHO FREAKED OUT WHEN SHE DID THAT RIGHT 😭
• Sam recreating the face of the scarecrow JUST LIKE SHE DID IN GREENBERG….. (the parallels to eastward are making me INSANE it’s quite literally everything I’ve ever wanted)
• it’s weird to see Solomon a COMPLETELY different character, as everyone else’s personality and appearances stayed relatively the same, but I like it nonetheless!!!
• EVERYTHING ABOUT WILLIAM AND THE DANIELS IS SO ADORABLE…… like just the way they all interact, they’re such a cute little family.
• I love how william still has a lot of really funny dialogue like in eastward, but now he’s actually a good dad!!!!!! IM PROUD OF YOU WILLIAM :,) I mean he does still make his children work for him but that’s irrelevant !!
• I love how most of the interactions between robot Daniel and William have basically just been:
“but father! you’re broke! we can’t do that father we have no money!”
“SHUT UP YES WE DO SON 😀”
• I find it interesting how robot Daniel still has a stutter, but human Daniel doesn’t
• speaking of the Daniels we never got to see them actually interact in eastward and THEY ARE THE CUTEST BROTHERS UGHHH 😭😭 LIKE THEYRE LITERALLY MY CHILDREN
• probably my favorite little moment so far: in ch1 of eastward, human Daniel refers to John as sam’s dad and Sam says “John’s not my dad! John’s just John.” In octopia, William asks if John is Sam’s dad, and she happily replies with “Nope! John’s just John!” YALL THIS MADE MY HEART SOOOO HAPPY 🥺
• I noticed sam is barefoot- I REALLY hope that means Alva will give her her shoes again cause that’s just too adorable to not happen <3
• I NEED MORE SAM RIDING ON JOHNS SHOULDERS PLEASE PIXPIL…….
Wow this ended being a LOT of stuff lmao but if you couldn’t already tell I’m really loving octopia so far.
I’d love to know what y’all think of it as well!!!!

I have to come back to Mother as an antagonist and my ultimate realization about why there are absolutely no stakes in Eastward
also I'm sorry to bring up LISA but the parallels in terms of how they handle their respective plots just goes to show how fluffy and frictionless Eastward's plot is comparatively
both Sam/Mother and Buddy are in a similar position of being the ultimate decider of humanity's fate. In fact this is hugely hugely a theme LISA plays with and discusses, its a huge factor of the plot. Buddy's autonomy is hugely played up.
This couldn't be less true of Sam. Sam never has to grapple with her autonomy in the face of humanity's fate. Mother essentially was forced to give up her body for the society that dictated she would be humanity's savior, she had her autonomy stripped away. Sam gave up her life to be humanity's savior, this was not a choice she ever really had to grapple with so much as something she "had to do".
I think this is the crux of what makes Sam and Mother's internal conflict so repetitive and uncompelling compared to Buddy's, Mother is never truly a part of Sam's human wants but a separate entity inhabiting her, never truly an influence on the choices she ultimately makes.
Sam never even has the option to try to talk down Mother or otherwise resolve their situation - whether or not that would have worked or made things worse. She is given the one choice, the only choice she can truly make free of Mother, she takes it and kills herself.
Sam has no autonomy in the story, her only choice is to die. We're not ever given a good reason that she might turn her back on humanity. Not even in that long, goading speech Mother gives at the end - it basically means nothing, because aside from at Crockpot Isle every town they visited on their journey was welcoming of Sam, places where she made friends and was cherished.
It has no impact, it just seems contradictory to the life Sam has been living as opposed to the one Mother experienced.
... this is more fanfiction territory but you know what I think? Mother would have more impact if she'd been able to turn John and Sam's wants on each other.
Who does have a reason to save Sam and turn his back on humanity? Who would do anything to protect Sam? Who lived in a cave for 40+ years, was put down for being poor, taken advantage of, ground down through hard labor and continued to be mocked and scorned for his lower-class status throughout the journey?
Who is haunted by the people he's lost before?
If Mother could convince anyone to spare her and therefore Sam, John would be the guy she could convince. If she was a smart villain, like we're supposed to believe. Having arguments with a child about "why killing is good actually" isn't going to get you very far, but a downtrodden, out-of-luck adult man who's been treated like the scum of society?
Now THAT would be conflict!
This is just one way it could actually have like, some meaty conflict going on and have the characters who're supposed to be doing good actually have to contend with their wants vs. the good of humanity. It is very "LISA" to have the father figure go rogue and lay waste to humanity to protect his adoptive daughter, yes, but I would looooove to see John freak out and go apeshit rather than be entirely passive throughout the game.
