Your OC’s Backstory Week 2: Education
Tumblr media
For @yourocsbackstory. [Introduction] [Family]
Prompt | Write a scene that is somewhat typical for their education!
Let’s go back to 2005, when Blake was in his final year of high school.
Blake headed for his locker on his own, having been held back in maths for distracting the class. It hadn’t been his fault - he hadn’t started the discussion that derailed the lesson, but he was the one who’d copped the blame for it.
Swapping his textbooks for his football he headed out to the oval where he knew his mates would be, his shoes rubbing on the back of his heel as he walked, making him miss the pair he’d been wearing the year before.
He’d tried to stop his mum throwing them in the bin. Yeh, they’d seen better days and the sole on one had rubbed through, but they’d been comfy. He’d spent ages breaking them in and she’d gone and thrown them out in favour of a new shiny pair that had no give. He’d even tried to rescue to old pair from the bin when she wasn’t looking, only she’d anticipated that and had got his Dad to cut through them with the drop saw before throwing them away.
The new shirt was similar, the collar itching his neck, making him glad he’d at least hidden his shorts before she could chuck them out too.
“Oi Rails!” Jonno jogged over, falling in step with Blake as he neared the oval. “The fuck you been? Barely saw you all summer.”
“Eildon,” Blake replied. He wanted to be back there, spending his days wakeboarding and dirt bike riding, instead of wasting his time at school. If he’d had his way he would have seen out the summer there and then signed up with the Army, only his Mum wanted him to finish high school and he didn’t want to disappoint her.
“And first period? Thought we had English together.”
“Nah, I swapped to home ec.”
Jonno started laughing, stopping when Blake glared at him. “Wait you’re serious? Why you doing that girly shit?”
Blake bounced the footy a couple of times, needing a distraction to stop himself from thumping him. “Cause maybe I wanna be able to feed myself?”
“Lame.”
“And not set fire to the kitchen making two minute noodles?”
Jonno went red. “Was one time,” he sulked, then elbowed Blake. “Anyway, your loss. Caitlyn’s in my class.”
“So?” He needed to change the conversation. Ahead he could see the rest of the guys waiting on the oval and kicked the ball in their direction, watching them jostle for the mark. “Pretty sure my mum’s your teacher too.”
Jono leered. “Yeh she is!”
This time Blake did whack him in the arm. “Gross, dude. That’s my mum!”
The ball came back in their direction. He went to mark it but Jonno got in the way, stealing it at the last second.
Jonno lined up to return the kick. “Oh I know why. You gotta be the only guy in that class, right? Makes up for the PE sausage fest.”  The kick careened the ball off to the right, much to the yells of the rest of their friends.
“You gotta stop trying to drive your foot through the ball and guide it instead,” Blake told him. “It’s why you keep fucking up your set shots. You get that right and you’ll stop spending half the game on the bench.”
“Right. Yeh.” Some kid handballed the footy back to them and Jonno had another shot, this one more successful than the last.
“Think I should go for house captain,” Blake asked, only half serious. He wanted a cruisy final year and that meant responsibility, only he’d enjoyed vice captaincy the year before. It’d make his Mum happy too, particularly seeing as he hadn’t told her about his army plan yet.
Jonno snorted. “Like you’d get a choice in that. Who else would they give it to? Chester?”
“Wanna punch that fucking dickhead,” Blake growled, still not over the suspension he’d copped because of him the year before. “Right in his stupid face.”
“You gotta watch that anger issue dude. Will get you in trouble some day.”
The shoes were still bothering Blake. He dropped to a knee to adjust the laces, hoping that would make a difference, then stood, just in time to see the ball flying back towards them. Jonno had moved off to the left to mark it, only Blake could tell it was going to go straight over his head. Taking off at a sprint Blake jumped when he was behind Jonno, shoving his knee into his friends back to help get a bit of extra height and plucking the ball out of the air as he did. Ball clutched to his chest he tumbled to the ground.
“Stop using me as a bloody stepladder,” Jonno grumbled over the cheers of the other guys. “It fucking sucks.”
Blake stood up, brushing the dirt off himself. He had a grass stain on his shirt from the fall, something he knew his mum would be annoyed about, but he figured if he wore his school jumper the rest of the day and snuck the shirt in the wash later she’d never actually notice. Otherwise she’d know straight away how he’d gotten the stain, something which he’d promised he’d stop doing, and--
Something told him she already knew.
Blake glanced over his shoulder, seeing his Mum looking in his direction. How had he forgotten she was on bloody yard duty? She’d probably already heard about the incident in maths too.

More thoughts on EC
I keep seeing people say that Eugenia is parading around her body.. how exactly does she do that? By having a YouTube channel and trying on clothes/makeup? So.. she shouldn't be allowed to be seen by people because of her body? At all? Has she EVER promoted starving yourself? Has she ever said that? Has she ever said anything at all promoting anorexia? I'd like to see it if she has. She isn't parading around going OOO LOOK AT MEEE IM SO THIN ISN'T THIS JUST GREAT? YOU SHOULD BE SKINNY TOO!! No. She hasn't. Not to my knowledge, anyway. When they use the word "parading" what they really mean is existing. This girl is living her life and doing the things that make her happy despite having something really serious she's dealing with. She puts herself out there regardless. She doesn't hide in a cave like onision and his fans want her to do. Which I find amazingly brave. I don't know if I could handle the harassment and hate this girl receives on a daily basis. She also to my knowledge has never gotten mean towards onision. It seems like she just wants him to leave her alone. I watched a few of her videos and holy crap this girl is so sweet? The moment I realized just HOW sweet and nice this girl was it fucking clicked. Easy. Ass. Target. When I was a kid I was always the bullies main target because I was so soft spoken and tried so hard to be nice to everyone and anyone. They knew I was a meek person, they knew even if I DID try to stand up for myself it would be with a small shaking voice that would go unheard by others. Onision never goes for loud, openly witty and opinionated people. He goes after the quiet and gentle types.. the people with itty bitty followings and don't have that aggressive personality. And if he DOES go after people with larger followings/more aggressive personalities he does it in a nasty low down kind of way. Like putting a picture of Caitlyn Jenner over a certain youtubers face. Instead of debating what she actually said all he did was mock and belittle her for her lifestyle and the way she looks/talks. Eugenia shouldn't have to hide herself away. If someone has an eating disorder and tries to blame it ALL on Eugenia... I hope they get better, I hope they get to a happy place... but they're also a damn liar. It's not okay to blame your illness all on Eugenia. That's not how eating disorders work. It's not some surface level issue like onision says(or doesn't say? seems like he can't make up his mind on whether people with ED's are just stupid or have actual disorders) You can't bash Eugenia and poof! Be magically cured of this. Harassment and hate have never accomplished anything GOOD. Please keep this in mind.

York prepare for tough challenge in hockey tournament
York High are the three-time defending champions but they will not be taking anything for granted when the South Western Districts leg of the Spar Eastern Cape Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge is held on Saturday.
This is the view of York director of sport Jason Slater ahead of the tournament, which the George school will host at their astro.
It will be the last regional qualifier for the annual hockey extravaganza, which sees a total of 70 schools competing in five separate tournaments.
These events will culminate in the provincial finals to be hosted by Collegiate in Port Elizabeth on July 27 and 28, with four of the five teams having already been decided.
Earlier this year DSG (PE Inland) and Clarendon Girls’ High (East London Coastal) booked their spots in the provincial finale.
They were joined at the weekend by Woodridge (PE Central) and Queenstown Girls’ High (East London Inland), who earned their places after thrilling battles with their respective rivals.
Now it is the turn of the SWD schools, and defending champions York are gearing up for a serious challenge.
“It definitely won’t be an easy tournament because the level of play between teams like York, Outeniqua and Glenwood House is very close,” said Slater.
“The York team know that anything can happen in a tournament of this nature and it is going to be a tough challenge.”
Matches in the Spar Challenge are limited to 20 minutes each, which intensifies the pressure and the outcome could hinge on one crucial moment, he added.
“Even though York have won the title a few times it has always been very close and one goal at the right time in this format can make all the difference to the final result.”
Slater said the Hockey Challenge concept, with its emphasis on creating a happy vibe, remained a firm favourite among the players.
“The girls really do enjoy the occasion, with all the music and camaraderie that happens during the event.
“It’s something to look forward to each year and another chance for the players to receive exposure on a different platform to the normal inter-schools matches.”
Spar EC sponsorships and events manager Alan Stapleton said they were anticipating another exciting tournament.
“We, at SPAR, are looking forward to the final regional event in George,” he said. “If the previous play-offs are anything to go by, we are in for a cracker of a day.
“This is always a competitive event, with lots of fun thrown in and plenty of family support, which is what the Hockey Challenge is all about.”
York have won the South Western Districts leg of the Spar Eastern Cape Hockey Challenge for the last three years, but know they face another testing examination on Saturday in George. Last year’s winning team was (back, from left) Erica Combrink (coach), Erin Coetzee, Sanja Greeff, Lauren Rothman, Frances Herholdt, Mieke Hougaard, Ella da Silva (captain), Emily Klue, Silke Schmidt (vice-captain), SPAR sponsorship and events manager Alan Stapleton, (front, from left) Megan Buckley, Caitlyn Callaghan, Nicci Claassen, Jo-Ann Klue, Abi van Tonder and Jessica Edington. Carey Baldwin Interview by Elise Cooper
Countdown by Carey Baldwin is a story ripped from the headlines.  Juggling two professions, psychologist and pediatrician, has helped her with formulating different storylines.  This novel is a departure from her last one, and is much more of a fun read.  The plot begins with what appears to be someone drowning on the beach of Tahiti.  Forensic psychiatrist Caitlyn Cassidy and FBI Agent Atticus Spenser are enjoying some R and R while preparing for their upcoming wedding. Unfortunately their best-laid plans go awry when they attempt to rescue the couple. They then become embroiled in a case that involves a con, dirty secrets and murder. After agreeing to help local law enforcement that seems to be overwhelmed Cassidy and Spenser find that each clue of the investigation is nothing, as it seems. The story takes off with many twists and turns.
Elise Cooper: How did you get the idea for the story?
Carey Baldwin:  I started out writing about something completely different, terrorists.  Then I decided I did not want to write about it right now and chose to go in another direction.  I came up with this near drowning and then worked backwards from the incident in the water.  For the characters I wanted a family situation and centered them on twin sisters.
EC:  Why the Tahiti setting?
CB:  I have never been in Tahiti but would like to go there one day. I did a lot of research on the setting and luckily my editor has been there.  She was able to provide me with some of the nuance and was my fact checker.
EC:  You have this great quote, “It didn’t matter if she couldn’t match Tommy’s physical strength; she had a gun.” It reminds me of that Indiana Jones’ scene where the gun is the equalizer. Please explain.
CB:  It reflected Rose’s feeling.  She drew upon what she learned from her father, a con man.  It doesn’t matter the who, or what is the situation, you can always outwit somebody.  The way she compensated for her shortcomings was with a gun.  It was her trying to figure out ‘how can I have an equalizer and come out on top.’
EC:  Please describe Rose.
CB:  She has a large sense of responsibility towards family with a highly developed sense of right and wrong.  Her driving force is an overdeveloped conscience. Rose is willing to make sacrifices to do right by her family.
EC:  The French police reminded me of the Keystone Cops?
CB:  Deputy Sgt. Pierre Brousseau is a slightly comic figure.  He is flawed, but not stupid.  Being addicted to alcohol causes him to do some dumb mistakes.  His brother, Inspector Jacques Brousseau is stubborn, determined, and humble.  But he is also inexperienced, although not inept.
EC:  What do you think is the theme?
CB:  The importance of family.  All the motivations for the supporting characters is protecting someone in their family, including the police brothers.  The twins were searching for the ideal family when in reality they had a dysfunctional one.  Caity and Spenser had their moms and each other to contend with.
EC:  The con plays a huge role?
CB:  The twins looked at the world from that lens.  They were always looking for a trick, the potential for a trick, or a trick they could use to get the outcome they wanted.  They saw everything in the form of a game because they had trust issues.  The con skewed their whole world.
EC:  What do you want readers to get out of the novel?
CB:  An entertaining story that had a lighter touch.  The story is fun and adventurous.  It is not quite as dark as the previous novel, Stolen. I hope readers realize that at the end of the book Caity and Spenser are in a good place.  Also, my next book will probably not be a Cassidy and Spenser story.
THANK YOU!!
