Trichocereus pachanoi
This columnar cactus comes from Peru and Ecuador, and it is very well known for its psychoactive properties; it was an important ritual plant in pre-Columbian times. This particular form of it has extra-fat stems and a pinkish tinge to the outsides of the flowers. It has not flowered previously at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, but it has put on quite a show this year.

Soehrensia thelegona
This plant was originally classified as a Trichocereus, but for a while a giant genus Echinopsis was recognized, taking in not only the original Echinopsis species, but also Trichocereus, Soehrensia and Lobivia. Now this has been walked back based on DNA evidence, but surprisingly the plant pictured has been shown to belong with the Soehrensia group, rather than with the Trichocereus group. So now I am trying to get used to calling it Soehrensia thelegona, rather than Trichocereus thelegonus or Echinopsis thelegona. It has a very prostrate growth habit, crawling along the ground like the "creeping devil" of Baja California, and then it amazes everyone with its huge white flowers in late spring to early summer. From Argentina.
