What is Paganism?
The term Paganism has been evolving for almost two millennia, so there is understandable confusion about what Paganism means. It has always been an umbrella term that includes within it many different faiths and practices. In this post, we are going to talk about what Paganism is (and isn’t) and explore some of the most important branches of modern Paganism (also known as Neopaganism).
Origins of the Term Paganism
The term Paganism was coined in the fourth century by Christians living in the Roman Empire for anyone who did not follow Christianity or Judaism. It comes from the Latin word paganus, which means country dweller. The implication was that these were “country bumpkins” stuck in old ways and not yet “wise” to the modern religion of Christianity. The Roman Empire officially converted to Christianity in 313 CE.
In the Middle Ages, while Islam was also viewed as a non-Pagan religion, the term Paganism continued to be used to refer to anyone who did not follow a religion based on a biblical god. It carried the derogatory connotation that Pagans worship false gods and are barbarians.
But in the 20th century, the term Paganism was reclaimed by various groups that follow religious beliefs or practices associated with pre-Christian religions. The group includes polytheists that continue to worship non-biblical pantheons, animists, magical practitioners, nature worshippers, and more.
The term Neopaganism is often used to distinguish these modern Pagans from our ancestors, who would have never referred to themselves as Pagans. Christians created the term Pagan to create “us” (biblical religions) and “them” (non-biblical religions) categories. This would not have been meaningful to our pre-Christian ancestors or to Norse warriors and Egyptian priests for whom Christianity was just one more religion.
It is worth noting that while Medieval Christians would have referred to religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism as Pagan, they aren’t included in the modern definition. These organized religions, which are dominant in many countries, fall into a class of their own.
Definition of Neopaganism
It is difficult to define Neopaganism because so many different people today identify with the term Paganism. It is possible to identify some characteristics that are common to most Neopagans, but don’t necessarily apply universally.
Pagan religions tend to be non-organized in that they are followed by an individual practitioner or small community rather than being a hierarchical institution like the Catholic church. But there are exceptions; for example, Hermetic orders tend to be small but very hierarchical organizations.
Pagan religions are often polytheistic, either drawing on ancient divine pantheons or following an animistic approach, which recognizes divinity in action within the world without necessarily naming it. Pagans can believe in these gods in a literal sense or as a metaphorical tool for relating to powers that are beyond our comprehension.
Pagans tend to believe that everything is sacred, especially nature, and that we can tap into the spiritual energy of the universe through meditation, invocation, rituals, witchcraft, and various other practices.
In most cases, it is an individualistic path. You choose which deities and beliefs speak to you personally, and you are responsible for creating and following your spiritual path. This very often links to a strong moral code, as you are responsible for your actions and their consequences. Pagans often identify with the idea that you can feed the universe with positive energy or diminish it with negative energy. You attract the kind of energy that you project, and what you receive mirrors what you give.
As we have already said, these characteristics do not hold true for all Pagans, but they are ideas that most Neopagans will identify with.
Branches of Neopaganism
So, if there are various branches of Neopaganism, what are they?
It is impossible to provide a complete and comprehensive list, first because we would be here forever, and second, since it is a personal and individualistic belief system, there is no limit to the number of variations that can exist.
But below, we will look at some of the most popular forms of Paganism that are most widely recognized in the Neopagan community today.
Reconstructionist Religions
Reconstructionist religions attempt to reconstruct ancient religions in the modern world. Pagans of this brand might choose to worship the Greek gods, follow the ritual practices of Egyptian priests, or walk in the footsteps of Druids.
Probably the most well-known reconstruction religion is Norse paganism, also known as Heathenry, which is the belief in the old Norse gods, including Odin, Thor, and Freyja. While exactly how this is done is individualistic, enough people identified with this type of Paganism that Asatru was created in Iceland in the 1970s to provide a common banner under which they could identify as an interest group. It is now recognized around the world.
Magic working is not a necessary part of modern Norse paganism, just as it was not in ancient times when only a few people were Volva (Seidr witches) or runemasters (workers of rune magic). But runic divination is a popular practice in modern Heathenry.
Wicca
Wicca is probably the type of Paganism most represented in pop culture (think The Craft and Charmed). It is a modern witchcraft practice, often but not always associated with the veneration of a great mother goddess and her consort, often but not always portrayed as a horned god. It can be followed by sole practitioners or coven groups led by a high priest or priestess.
Modern Wicca is credited as being founded by Gerald Gardner in the 1930s, and followers of his teachings are known as Gardnerian Wiccans. But today there are many different branches, both formal and informal.
Modern Wicca draws on what is known from historic witchcraft and magic rituals. But it is a thriving and evolving practice in which invention and following your intuition are encouraged.
Non-Wiccan Witchcraft
Not all Pagans who identify themselves as practitioners of witchcraft consider themselves Wiccan. Many follow a more shamanistic or nature-based approach to witchcraft without reference to organized elements such as covens or priests. These, usually sole practitioners, are often referred to as hedge witches.
These practitioners have a lot in common with Wiccans in their use of certain symbols and elements and closely following the cycle of the year and the phases of the moon. Grimoires and Books and Shadows are often used to record knowledge.
Hermeticism
The term Hermeticism originally referred to a religio-philosophical system based on a small number of writings known as Hermetica which gave birth to scientific approaches to magic in the form of practices such as alchemy. But Hermeticism has since become a term for those who engage in “high magic” or ritual magic, usually within a body or organization with specific teaching and hierarchies.
Probably the most famous example of these is the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an organization dedicated to the study of the occult, metaphysical, and paranormal. It is a spin-off of Freemasonry and incorporates the hierarchies and secrecy of that order. There are tests to enter new parts of the order and learn new secrets. For a number of years, the famous occultist Aleister Crowley was associated with the order.
Animism
Animism differs from other types of polytheistic paganism in that it does not necessarily feel the need to name or identify deities. Animism accepts that there is a divine or spiritual force at work in the world and it can be seen in aspects of life. But they can appreciate and be thankful for these forces without anthropomorphizing them into deities.
Animists often believe that the gods of polytheistic religions are cultural constructions designed to help humans better understand and engage with these forces. They may choose to engage with certain traditional polytheistic gods as a way of engaging with the elements of the world they consider most important.
Secular Paganism
Secular paganism could also be called a nature-based religion. Secular pagans do not necessarily believe in certain deities and could be Polytheists, Christians, Atheists, or anything in between. The core belief is that we are part of nature, rather than masters of it, and that we should live our lives with an abiding love and respect for nature.
Secular Paganism often mixes meditative and ritual practices designed to better understand and control the self with a world view based on science.
Eclectic Paganism
Eclectic Paganism is kind of a “catch-all” term for those who don’t fit into other types of Paganism. This is for people who identify with the general principles of Paganism but haven’t tied themselves to a single belief system or set or practices.
For example, they might believe in the mother goddess, but not practice witchcraft. They may feel a deep spiritual connection with the universe, witch manifests in practices such as reading Tarot cards, and cleansing spaces with incense and herbs, but may not necessarily consider these practices linked with any kind of divinity.
Eclectic Pagans often have broad interests in terms of researching different new age practices and approaches. They may also identify with Paganism aesthetically through gothic-style fashion.
Meso-Paganism
Meso-Paganism is a term used for practices that are a result of mixing non-Christian religions with Christianity imposed by conquerors, missionaries, or both. Haitian Voodoo and Candomblé in Brazil are probably the best examples, in which African deities are syncretized with Christian Saints and elements of Christian religion are incorporated into traditional rituals.
While many of the characteristics of Neopaganism apply to Meso-Paganism, followers and practitioners are less likely to identify with the broader Pagan community. These are traditional religions passed down through communities, rather than sought out by individuals. So, while they may not be the dominant religion in a certain place, they have this in common with religions such as Hinduism.
What kind of Pagan are You?
While this whole post has been dedicated to trying to define and categorize Paganism, what it really equates to is following your own spiritual path outside of the biblical context. There are no rules about what you have to believe and practices that you have to engage in. It is all about finding your own spirituality and expressing it in a way that works for you.
But we would still love to know what Paganism means to you! Let us know in the comments section below.

I woke up to a lovely ask in my inbox this morning, so head's up that fucking JOS (that notorious Nazi Front organization) asks are going around again already.
In case you need another reminder, and / or you’re new or unfamiliar with Paganism --- or, at least, are new to the constant battle we fight on this site against repeating waves of JOS bot asks; especially in relation to Paganism's (perfectly valid) Satanist cousin faiths: J*y Of S*t*n is a Nazi Front Organization that masquerades as a Satanist religion and Church.
It is not Pagan, nor is it Satanist. It is a Nazi group that was founded by the wife of the American NSM cofounder (who was later forced to resign as the NSM’s Chairman because of his ties to JOS), and is well known to co-opt the language and imagery of Satanism and Western Esotericism in order to act as an esoteric funnel for the group, and for Neo-Nazism as a whole.
This is not up for debate. This has been a well known and well established fact for a long time now.
Remember: Only ever Block, report, and delete these asks if you receive them, and any accounts you find associated with them.
Never respond. Never debate (especially not to "defend" your religion or "correct" them). Never publish just because "oh they seem innocuous enough, I don't see what the big deal is". Never publish even just to laugh at their stupidity ... Only ever delete, block, and report any asks you receive, and any accounts you find associated with them. Period.
No matter how well meaning you are about it, publishing asks about JOS only ever gives these Nazis more visibility- and that is exactly what these waves of asks are intended to do every single time they send them out to us ... Do not encourage them. They are Neo-Nazis. Do not give them a platform. Do not play their game. That is exactly what they want you to do.
Not a huge fan of those who're reblogging it with TW tags. Don't do that. It ultimately defeats the purpose of a literal warning post.

I forge my own path with:
• Khemitic Wicca (Solitary)
• Hellenistic polytheism & Strix Craft (Hellenistic Revivalism and witchcraft)
• The cult of Antinoüs
• Blue Rose Feri (Luciferianism)
For me, witchcraft is mostly A-Dark-Thing , not just ''magic'', and not self-care. But no judgement here! Just a technical question: I love beauty, well-being and happiness ! 🌠
I don't master these things, I do explore and enjoy them.
Gay man. I live in France. 40. Virgo, passionate, I post about everything I love and find inspiration here.
I control myself if you do the same. People insulting other users or reblogging insults will be immediately blocked.
May the gift of generosity spring forth with that of Zeus, may the gods grant you the sacred flame of life, the extasy that animates the heart.

White Sage | Salvia Apiana ❁ཻུ۪۪ ━
‧₊˚.  : · •.  * • ˚   . · * ✶   : · •  *   ˚ ✵
In this discussion, we will delve into the fascinating aspects of white sage: its unique properties, natural habitat, and the reasons behind its one-day endangered status and revered significance. The following information is intended purely for educational purposes and is derived from extensive research, including diverse perspectives on the utilization of this herb in various practices. If anything sounds off or sounds incorrect, do not be afraid to let me know, however, please be respectful when pointing something out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ Family
"White Sage is a member of the mint family (family Lamiaceae), which includes aromatic herbs or shrubs (rarely trees or vines), usually with stems square in cross-section, four-sided.There are about 200 genera and 3,200 species, distributed nearly worldwide. The Mediterranean region, the chief area of diversity, produces many spices and flavorings, such as various mints, oregano, marjoram, thyme, sage, and basil. Catnip and lavender are in the mint family." - Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ Appearance
White sage is a tall, woody shrub that can reach heights of several feet. This sprawling plant typically measures around 3-4 feet in height and 4-5 feet in width. Its distinguishing feature is its long, slender leaves that have a silvery-white colour, which is why it is called white sage. The plant produces small, white or pale lavender flowers on tall spikes during the blooming season.
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ Native Habitat
White sage is native to the southwestern United States and northern Baja, Mexico. It may also be found along the lower edges and in openings of chaparral and oak woodlands. White sage can even be found in Canada under specific conditions. In Canada, white sage can be grown as a perennial herb in regions with similar climates to its native habitats, such as parts of British Columbia or southern Ontario.
White sage is adapted to a Mediterranean climate, which is characterized by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. It thrives in areas with long, dry periods and requires plenty of sunlight. The plant is well-suited to sandy or rocky soils and can tolerate drought conditions. It is often found growing in arid or semi-arid regions with low to moderate rainfall.
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ Planet/Sign Associations for Sage
This pertains to sage in a general sense, rather than specifically referring to white sage.
Planet: Jupiter
Sign(s): Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini, Cancer, Scorpio
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ Properties and Benefits of White Sage
Insect Repellent: The aromatic compounds found in white sage have natural insect-repellent properties. Rubbing or burning dried sage leaves or using white sage essential oils can help repel mosquitoes, flies, and other pests.
Respiratory Support: White sage is often used to address respiratory issues such as colds, coughs, sore throats, and congestion. It is believed to have expectorant properties, helping to loosen mucus and alleviate respiratory discomfort.
Anti-inflammatory Effects: White sage is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties. It may be used topically or in the form of a poultice to soothe skin irritations, insect bites, and minor wounds.
Digestive Aid: White sage has been used to support digestion and relieve gastrointestinal discomfort. It is sometimes consumed as a tea to promote digestive health.
Calming and Relaxing Effects: The aroma of burning white sage is often considered to have a calming and relaxing effect. It is sometimes used for stress reduction and relaxation.
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ Warnings and Precautions
Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may be sensitive or allergic to white sage. If you have known allergies to plants in the Lamiaceae family (such as mint, basil, or oregano), it is advisable to exercise caution when using or being exposed to white sage.
Smoke Inhalation: Burning white sage releases smoke, which can be irritating to the respiratory system, particularly for individuals with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions. Ensure proper ventilation when cleansing or using white sage smoke and be mindful of the amount and duration of exposure.
Pregnancy and Nursing: The safety of using white sage during pregnancy or while breastfeeding has not been extensively studied. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before using white sage in these circumstances.
Skin Sensitivity: Applying white sage directly to the skin may cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals. It is recommended to perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying it more extensively. Discontinue use if any adverse reactions occur.
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ Why White Sage Is At Risk
White sage is primarily at risk due to habitat loss, over-harvesting, and unsustainable collection practices. Native bees heavily rely on white sage as a vital source of sustenance. However, the act of extracting seeds from sage plants by poachers not only disrupts the delicate balance but also leads to a decline in the population of indigenous bee species within the Golden State. The overwhelming majority of white sage items available for purchase have been obtained through poaching. Which means it is not ethically sourced. While white sage isn't endangered, it is in danger of becoming endangered. It's not so much that it is "scarce" but rather it will become so in the future.
Other factors on why white sage is at risk or a bullet-point list to hit major points (a TL;DR):
Unsustainable Collection Practices: Some harvesting practices of white sage involve uprooting the entire plant, which prevents it from regenerating and can lead to population decline. Additionally, unethical or unsustainable collection methods, such as illegal harvesting or removing plants from protected areas, further contribute to the risk of white sage.
Overharvesting: White sage has gained popularity in recent years for its use in smudging rituals, leading to increased demand.
Climate Change: Climate change, with its associated effects like temperature increases, altered precipitation patterns, and more frequent and severe droughts, poses a threat to the survival of white sage.
Lack of Natural Regeneration: White sage has limited natural regeneration capabilities. Its seeds have low germination rates, and the plant relies heavily on specific conditions for successful establishment. With habitat degradation and disturbance, the opportunities for the natural regeneration of white sage are diminished.
Rather than purchasing commercialized white sage, cultivating your own or receiving it as a gift from someone known for ethically sourcing it is the optimal approach to many aspects of this matter. It can be a proactive approach and one that benefits many.
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ What You Can Do to Protect or Preserve White Sage
Cultivate Responsibly: If you have the means and space, consider growing white sage in your garden or on your property. This can help reduce the need for wild harvesting. Ensure you obtain seeds or cuttings from reputable sources to ensure genetic diversity and authenticity.
Spread Awareness: Share your knowledge about white sage and the need for sustainable practices with others. Encourage respectful and responsible approaches to its use and cultivation.
Support Indigenous Communities: Purchase white sage from Indigenous-owned businesses or directly from Indigenous communities that cultivate and sell it sustainably. This supports their traditional practices and livelihoods while ensuring the responsible management of white sage.
Seek Alternatives: Explore alternatives to white sage for spiritual practices and cleansing. There are several other plants, such as rosemary, cedar, eucalyptus, mugwort, green sage, purple sage, lavender, pine, and desert sage that can be used as substitutes.
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ Spiritual and Traditional Significance
The profound spiritual and ancestral meaning of white sage holds great significance in various indigenous cultures, particularly within Native American traditions. Although this herb is not exclusive to indigenous communities, it is the ritualistic practice surrounding it that holds paramount importance.
While smoke cleansing is a practice found across cultures with different plants and herbs, the term "smudging" specifically refers to the Indigenous tradition and should be approached with respect and understanding. To ensure cultural sensitivity and avoid appropriation, it is advisable to educate oneself on how native communities perform this ritual, explore alternative practices, or, if uncertain, simply refrain from incorporating it. In the realm of closed practices, initiation or invitation becomes a vital component, accompanied by a rich tapestry of diverse ceremonies and customs that differ among various tribal communities.
Here are some of the spiritual and traditional practices associated with the use of white sage:
Smudging: The act of smudging is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of numerous First Nations, the Indigenous and Native American peoples. This ancient practice entails the sacred burning of various medicinal plants obtained from the Earth, such as sweetgrass, sage, tobacco and cedar. By partaking in a smudge, individuals engage in a purifying ritual aimed at dispelling negativity, alleviating anxieties, and transcending any lingering gloom or emotional distress. Ultimately, the purpose is to restore well-being and empower oneself to thrive.
Cleansing Rituals: White sage is often used in various cleansing rituals to purify individuals, living spaces, ceremonial tools, and sacred objects. This can be done by waving the smoke over the body or around the area or object being cleansed, with the intention of removing stagnant or negative energies.
Prayer and Meditation: White sage is sometimes used in prayer and meditation practices to create a sacred and purified space. Burning white sage can be accompanied by prayers, affirmations, or specific intentions, fostering a focused and spiritually receptive state of mind.

Is the Witchcraft community overly capitalised?
Tumblr media
Hello lovely Tumblrs who still use this platform!
I have out of the broomcloset Secular Witchcraft practioner for about 5 years. But probably for even longer if I hadn't have neglected the call for so many years. I remember making fun of the hippies in goths in high school and thinking how much of a *weirdo* those people are! I thought I was soooo much better than them because I was accepted in the normies group and they weren't.
However, I still remember **Back in my day** we had to READ so many freakin books in order to come up with a semi inkling of what type of practice we will follow. What type of witch or neo pagan if you will.
Nowadays, thru TikTok, Youtube, etc, witchy influencers have succesfully *bewitched* people into thinking they need to spend hundreds of dollars on crystals and tarot and herbs or thousands of euro on classes in order to even learn how to become a "baby witch".
Is this the future of witchcraft? Although I love having so many materials and inspiration from the internet it just all seems so overly capitialized- especially during the pandemic era when people were desperate for a connection and change.
What do y'all think? Have we over commercialised ourselves?

Water has many lessons to teach us. Over time, these lessons, like water, will flow through your life and change you. Sometimes you may be greeted with the lessons of calm waters; at other times, that of treacherous waters. Sometimes the lesson may be to play the game slowly, as with the water that formed the Grand Canyon; at other times, it may be to go with the flow. Sometimes the message will be harsher and will teach about rebirth and the destruction of death; sometimes it will be more hopeful and will speak of transformation and healing power. And sometimes, water will just remind you of how incredibly powerful you are.

Prefazione
Per gli antichi greci la religione era (culto, atti del culto, fede) τὰ περὶ τὸν θεόν, τὰ θεῖα, τὰ ἱερά, πίστις [-εως, ἡ] e soprattutto…
Purtroppo non esiste alcuna verità assoluta, dal greco antico αὐτός (di potere, dominio) κύριος o addirittura (senza legami) ἄδετος, ἄδεσμος.

What if all the tiktok witches that tried cursing the moon got together and tried curseing eminem fans
I think it can work this time
Alright its magical theory time. Lets do a thought experiment: How would we actually assemble "Mass Ritual To Curse All Eminem Fans"?
For our metaphysical toolkit, we are gonna have to get a bit eclectic. Get ready for some infooccult neopagan chaos jazz.
Lets talk spell structure. A curse requires three things: Power, Form, and Direction. The curse needs to get its power from somewhere, it needs to turn that power into an effect, and it needs to apply that effect to a target.
The easiest way to accomplish this would probably to curse Mr. Mathers himself. Eminem will be the axis upon which the ritual turns. The curse shall be a flame, ritually bound within Eminem, which casts its baleful light upon all who look upon Eminem in reverence.
That flame is going to need fuel. Eminem's most recent album went platinum, with over 1.1 million sales in the US alone. That's a lot of fans, so our energy requirements are gonna be pretty significant. I would say ballpark 300,000 practitioners burning a picture of Eminem in a ritual pyre along with a somatic incantation every month or so. The actual somatic component doesn't matter much. It could just be "may every Eminem fan shit their pants."
Before we can feed the fire, we have to start it. Given that we are attempting to use Eminem specifically as a medium for the curse, we are gonna need a stable way to pump magical energy into Eminem. We are gonna need a phial of his blood, a nice hermetically sealed one. That's going to be the axle for the curse. To keep everything stable, I would build a small consecrated structure around the phial to make sure nobody can interrupt the ongoing ritual.
Once we are ready to kick things off, we need a nice big ritual to get things going. Given the complexity here, we need something nice and stable. I would say a big astrological event. Ideally, it would be a confluence of a significant astrological event along with Eminem's birthday.
Also, magically speaking, personae are a factor. The difference between Marshall Mathers, Eminem, and Slim Shady presents additional complexity for a malicious wizard. That said, I am unsure if Mr. Mathers is aware of how he can use his stage persona as a defense against curses. So it will likely pose less of a problem than it otherwise could.

As I navigate this new chapter of my life, I find myself obsessed and entranced with the way things are. Their form, their shape, their colors. The smell of things. The distribution of light. I am so grateful for being here, and I am sad for how much time I spent being numb to the magic of being alive. Studying paganism and witchcraft has shaped me into something else and this path continues to transform me every day.
