I love cowboy bebop for its gender fuckery but I think one thing people miss since it’s just… kinda of impossible to translate directly, (and forgive me if I’m wrong I’m still learning Japanese) is that Japanese has gendered first person pronouns but tends not to use third person (she/he/it/they, ect) almost ever.
so Ed always referring to themself in the third person is just. More non binary in the language of origin. Which is just neat. And I think that the American version in the 90s before wide spread they them usage choosing she her is interesting too because Watashi is both the female pronoun AND the universal formal pronoun that most everyone uses at work or other formal settings, with them going from most formal and feminine to least formal and masculine, meaning that she is more of a non gendered first person pronoun than he is.
it’s just interesting and I love language.
