Remembering Apollo 1 ...
January 1967, NASA astronaut Edward White and his wife Pat posed for photographs during their end-of-year 1966-1967 holiday period as astronaut couples spent Christmas time and New Year at their homes near Houston - Texas.
Together with NASA astronauts Virgil Gus Grissom & Roger Chaffee, they were ready to start training for the manned Apollo lunar spaceflight program. Apollo 1 in particular.
All Apollo 1 astronauts wore NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster 105.003 chronographs, on a lightweight steel mesh Jacoby Bender champion bracelet. Note that during photo sessions, most NASA astronauts had the Speedmaster chronograph hand running ! (Photo: AP/WBESS/NASA)

“We are in a risky business, and we hope that if anything happens to us, it will not delay the program. The conquest of space is worth the risk of life.” -Gus Grissom

Headcanons for the Astros being supportive dads and moms
The Astronauts Being Supportive Mom/Dad Figures:
anytime you did something well was cause for celebration with the astronauts
you had known each other for quite some time
they knew about how you weren't always supported at home
so they try to be as supportive and kind as they can be
if you're overwhelmed at work, they will remind you to take a breather
a group of them will usually take a walk outside during a lunch break and always invite you
they invite you over to dinner at their houses at least once a week
their spouses love you too
so they always prepare your favorite meal when they find out you'll be coming over
when you accomplish something big at work or at school
the whole astronaut office knows about it
they either take you out for an ice cream
or let you ride in one of the T-38s
they're all a little taken aback by how little you've gotten to fly
so they take you up in the trainer planes quite frequently
a couple of them have even let you take the stick a time or two
even if it is against regulations
Frank and Neil are by far the best instructors when it comes to flying
if you make a mistake, they act as if nothing even happened and make the necessary corrections
if you make a mistake or just have a bad day at work/school
they're great listeners
Ed and John are probably the best listeners
they'll either be driving along and listening to you vent
or lighting a cigar poolside while you let it all out
and then at the end, they'll offer you ways to fix the problem
or next steps to take
Christa may be a teacher, but she's a mom first
she knows how difficult school can be
especially with subjects you don't really enjoy
so she'll help tutor you
she's great at science and math courses
she's very patient with you in a maternal way
"c'mon, Y/N, I know you know this! what's 3 to the 4th power?"
after your study sessions, you both go to meet the rest of the astros for ice cream
the best moms and dads ever <3
