Going to Community College has Been Fun!

We had an interview project a while back, and I interviewed my trans friend Rhy about fighting games, and being trans in the fgc (fighting game community), and Guilty Gear. Dear reader, when I tell you that I was fuckin' MOTIVATED (insert vergil meme). After he (my teacher) announced the project, I was on my phone asking Rhy if she could be my interviewee, and as soon as she said yes I was GONE. We set up the date at the local fgc meetup and I shot tons of B-roll, and shot about an hour and a half of interview footage. I started editing a few days later and I felt lost for a bit at all my footage. And then I remembered my editing teacher saying to NAME EVERYTHING that you look at, and to use the marker tool for specific spots you want to clip. Off again I was. Nearly 2 hours of footage and over 35 clips of B-roll all markered and clipped and I was picking songs, setting all that shit up over the next 4 days. I sent it in a day early and felt so pleased about it. I was watching and rewatching my video, so proud of it. And after I showed the video, the entire class was literally clapping. I was so blown away, I cried in the car after class I was so overwhelmed. Because not only was I enjoying school, not only was I completing assignments, not only was I turning in my work. But people liked it? Me? the person who's spent his entire life just being an internet nerd? The guy who cleans toilets at the local Wawa got an ovation from his entire classroom. I am broken in the best way possible.

The best part in all of this is my teacher finally graded it like a month later, and I check it today and he gave me a B. Which was fair! Because the footage was a bit wobbly in parts, I should have used the tripod more, and I had Rhy hold the lapel mic because I wasn't sure if I could hear her well enough when we were testing. It makes me so happy to have been given that fair criticism. It doesn't erase my joy at creating the video, it doesn't erase the ovation I got from my classmates. It just means that I have so much more to learn, and so much more to get better at.

I honestly don't think younger me could have done any of this. I was too scared, too emotional, too broken over trying to exist in this world. As much as I rue not figuring this all out until the age of thirty one, nineteen year old me wouldn't have done it anyway. And thats okay.

Author Interview : underthejoon

((If anyone wants to make a cool banner for this, please do. I suck at them))

Today is the debut of a new project. Whether it sticks around for long depends on you guys, but for now the plan is to interview one author a month. Creators are often underappreciated on here (or anywhere, for that matter), so this is me doing my part to connect our readers and writers in a meaningful way. Our first interview is with @underthejoon, someone whose work I myself have enjoyed for many years now. If you enjoyed this interview, please be sure to send in authors you’d like me to talk to for future editions, as well as any specific questions you’d like answered (except for questions about updating, that will get you a ban).

I’m kind of a mess and so while I attempt to cross post, I’m not always great at it. All of my work can be found on my tumblr masterlist but some of my things are on Wattpad and AO3. I’m also underthejoon on both of those platforms.

I made a ko-fi account ages ago that I never shared with the public because I’ve always felt guilty. Which is silly, idk why I do. But there it is!

Main bias (and why if you’d like)

So!! I have always been a Namjoon bias. From the very first time I saw them/the very first song I heard I was like yes, you. You are the one, I’m a goner!! He’s so wonderful and unique. He’s very mindful and creative and such a beacon of light to me. Plus, he’s very open with his humanity, if that makes sense? Like he is open about his therapy, his feelings about his perceived shortcomings, his excitement about finding place and things and works of art that inspire him. ALSO THOUGH, in the last year or so I’ve also become a Hoseok bias. He is just so dedicated and loving. He’s insanely talented and vastly underrated, in my opinion. And through all the back breaking work, he is kind through and through. He’s seriously just so warm and makes me really happy.

Hogwarts House :

Okay, the very first time I ever took it I was a slytherin. A few years later, I took it again and got hufflepuff. I like to think I’m a combination of the two but can see myself as more of a puff.

SO MANY, but I’ll pick 7 for 7 members. Some of these are old as hell but still currently my favorite lol. Love Maze, Love is Not Over, Outro: Her, Dimple, Tomorrow, Like, 2!3!

What was the defining moment when you decided, “Yes! I am going to write the thing!”?

For like fanfic in general? I feel like I had been reading a lot of it after “discovering” k-pop and then after a few months I was just like fuck it, I’m doing it!! I was always super into writing poetry and never thought I would be any good at anything like this but it sounded fun so here we are now.

What do you most enjoy about writing BTS fanfiction specifically?

I think it’s the community of writers. When I started my blog, I met a lot of really amazing supportive writers that I’ve managed to stay friends with and I think that makes a really big difference when you have people that can relate to you and what you’re doing.

Any tropes or au’s that you want to explore later?

I would really like to try writing some sort of supernatural creature fics. I’ve had this werewolf love triangle universe planned out forever that I would like to eventually write. Maybe like a workplace romance?

Which of your fics would you suggest for new readers?

For a completed series i’d say Piece by Piece. My WIP series, Love is Not Over is another one. For a one-shot I’d say, For You. Maybe the sweetness/make it right drabbles too.

Which of your fics is your favorite?

Piece by Piece, no doubt. I really feel proud of it and I have a hard time admitting I like anything I write.

What other fandoms do you wish you had the time to write for?

I used to write for EXO, Got7 and sometimes Monsta X and I miss it sometimes but also, I feel pretty contented in just writing for BTS. There’s a lot of inspiration there and I always felt I was being pulled in too many directions by my readers when I wrote for multiple fandoms.

What are your writing goals for the upcoming year?

I’d like to finish three series I have planned, get caught up on my collab fics and at least finish an outline for my original fiction piece I’ve been putting off!

Which writers do you read religiously?

There’s so many amazing writers on tumblr and I try as hard as I can to keep up with my mutuals when they put stuff out but sometimes it’s hard! I’m gonna be really brief because otherwise my list could go on and on. Okay, first and foremost, Shanna (@kpopfanfictrash) - she’s my best friend and a fabulous, wonderful writer. I would just like to give her a special shout out because not only does she entertain me for hours with her writing, she is very supportive of mine. Other authors I adore as humans and content creators and keep up with most regularly are @floralseokjin and @lamourche !

What is the weirdest thing you’ve had to google in the name of writing?

LOL. Hmm… I’m really boring and feel like I don’t really google that much when writing except maybe like different sex positions when i need a visual or synonyms to certain words. I’ve found some good porn though? Because visuals do help me.

Reader/OC fics within this fandom are often still looked down on and we all have to work hard to make them good enough for readers to look past their reputation. How do you combat the cringe?

TBH, I don’t think that responsibility lies on us as writers. If people don’t like certain types of writing, that’s on them and they can avoid it. Reader insert/oc fics are just as valid a genre as any. I’ve read some of the most beautiful, creative stories on this platform, some of which could be published if names were changed/reader was switched to a named OC. There’s something out there for everyone and it’s all subjective. While I might find certain things super cringey, others love it. To each their own as long as they aren’t shoving it in the faces of the people they’re writing about or being disrespectful, you know?

What is your personal guilty (or not-so-guilty) pleasure trope?

MUTUAL PINING/FRIENDS TO LOVERS. I feel like it’s so basic but I fucking love that trope and I think so many people do it so beautifully it is my absolute favorite.

What is something that you see often in other fanfics that drives you insane?

I think the only thing that really bothers me is when people romanticize abuse or other toxic/triggering topics.

Are any of the boys or ships more difficult for you to write than others?

I think I have the hardest time writing for Jimin and Taehyung but only because I feel I am the most similar to them and for whatever reason that deters me from writing about them often.

We all think we are the most hilarious person there is (even if we won’t admit it), so what is one line or scenario of yours that you like to go back to and giggle over?

Okay this was actually really difficult for me because I don’t write like any humor and don’t think I’m good at LOL. I think my only attempt at humorous writing was The New Guy in which the reader is high off her ass lying on the front lawn and thinking the world is ending then accusing Namjoon of being the Grim Reaper when he comes looking for her.

ONLY IF YOU WANT TO - A scenario as long or short as you want. Maybe 250 words or less. Godzilla is attacking the city and BTS is your rescue crew. How screwed are you?

“D-danger, you say?” Seokjin stutters.

“G-giant lizard monster headed this way?” Hoseok chokes.

The pair exchange glances then turn their focus towards you. Seokjin jerks his head towards the door and you nod in return.

“I hear what you’re saying, gentlemen,” Hoseok says as he stands on shaky legs. He grabs your hand as if to instruct you to do the same.

“And as much as we would LOVE to help you…” His grip is tighter now and you know what comes next.

Before he can finish, Seokjin shoots up from his chair and makes a mad dash towards the door. “Now, now, run, holy shit, NOW!”

Hoseok joins his friend in his haste to evacuate, dragging your nearly petrified form behind him. “No way in hell are we getting anywhere near that thing!”

Seokjin and Hoseok babble horrified nonsense between them but you can’t really decipher much of it. Your heart is pounding in your ears as you replay the name “Godzilla” in your brain.

They wanted you to rescue the city? What were they thinking?

When you reach Seokjin’s car, you have a brief moment of clarity. There are lives at stake, after all. How can you really just abandon the city when it needs a hero?

“What about everybody else?” you ask, voice small and fearful.

“Everybody else?” Seokjin huffs, putting the car in gear. He hardly gives your question a thought before he peels out of the parking lot. “Jungkook can handle everybody else. I raised him on my back, you know? It’s the least he can do!”

How to mod GG textures (v2.0)

I haven’t seen any tutorials on this, so I’ll do my best to explain the process! This only changes the colour palettes of the characters and does not change the actual character models.

What you need: - Guilty Gear Xrd - uMod V 2.0 alpha (r53) - Must be this version - Gimp

Edit 16/04/2021 - Gimp comes with DDS compatibility, so you actually don’t need the DDS plugin from the earlier ver of this guide! I’ve also gone more in-depth on the different textures you get (newly added step 3.5).

Step 1: Setting Everything Up

Open up uMod. Select Main > Add Game and find your .exe file of Guilty Gear. It should be somewhere in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GUILTY GEAR Xrd -REVELATOR-\Binaries\Win32.

Then select Main > Tick Use Global Hook.

Open up Guilty Gear. If things have worked, a tab should have opened in uMod. Make sure the Guilty Gear Xrd tab is selected in uMod.

Click Capture textures > >. A bunch of options will come up. Right now, you need to make sure Save Single Texture, Show Texture In the Upper Left Corner and Show Message In The Upper Left Corner are ticked.

You’ll see three buttons - Back, Save and Next. You need to assign keys to these buttons, this is what you’ll navigate through the textures with. Click one of those buttons, and press a key. I use 8, 9 and 0 because I hardly ever use those keys.

You want to make sure only the DDS box is ticked. This is important as when extracting/re-inserting textures, if you use any other format, the files will be messed up.

Finally, make sure you’ve set a save directory. uMod should automatically default it so any texture rips go into your uMod’s texture folder, but it may not have.

Everything should look like this when done. Press Update.

Step 2: Extracting The Texture

Enter Training Mode. Select the character you wish to mod.

Important: If you only want the colour palette to affect everything but the Main Story mode, when selecting a character, make sure you don’t select the character’s default colour palette. If you want your mod to affect how the character looks in the Main Story mode as well as all other modes, then change the character’s default colour palette.

Start pressing the key you assigned to the Back button. Locate the character texture (your character will light up green once you’ve found it). If your GG crashes, you may have to go through the textures more slowly.

For me, I found my Ky texture around the number 1032 in REV. So check around the 1000 area.

Hit your Save assigned key. You’ve now ripped the texture! It should appear in your textures folder (or wherever you assigned it to save).

Do not rename the texture.

At this point, untick Save Single Texture, Show Texture In the Upper Left Corner and Show Message In The Upper Left Corner. Click Update.

You can close uMod and Guilty Gear if you want.

Step 3: Making Your Edit

Locate your ripped texture, and open it with GIMP.

This will come up. Make sure Load mipmaps is unticked. If successful, your file should have opened in GIMP!

At this point, edit the texture however you want.

It will be difficult to tell which texture corresponds to each part of the character. So you’ll have to do a lot of trial and error.

(If you’re modding Ky, I’ll save you some time and point out roughly what corresponds to what. If something isn’t labelled, I’ve forgotten what part it is.)

Once you’re done with your edit to the texture, export it. Please remember you don’t rename the file. Keep it the same name. Make sure it’s a DDS file.

If this box below comes up, make sure you have Generate Mipmaps on.

Step 3.5: A Guide on the Different Textures

If you’ve gone through the different texture files, you’ve probably encountered three similar-looking files: the base texture, shadows and outlines.

Here’s a quick overview of what they do:

- Base texture: Standard colour scheme, this is what you’ll be primarily changing - Shadows texture: Gives a slight tint to the characters. This is why if you don’t edit this file, your colours can look different in-game - Outlines: In order to edit this, cover up the transparent pixels with green if you don’t want the outlines to show, and erase to show more green if you want more outlines

Final Step: Using Your Mod

Open up uMod and Guilty Gear if you closed it earlier. Always open up uMod first and then Guilty Gear, or it won’t work.

Open up Training Mode or Digital Figure Mode or whatever mode is gonna be best for you to take a look at the character.

Now, drag your Mod File/s into this box:

The game may freeze as it loads the new texture. If your game crashes, keep uMod open and reopen Guilty Gear.

For this example, I’m gonna be loading my Ky Mod which shows off his bare legs (yes, really). It’s on my tumblr. It’s worth checking out for the video alone.

And there you go, you’ve made a GG mod! Now all you have to do is share the Mod files to people.

A Quick Guide To Installing Mods

1. Open uMod 2. Main > Add Game The .exe should be somewhere in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GUILTY GEAR Xrd -REVELATOR-\Binaries\Win32 3. Go back to Main > Tick Use Global Hook 4. Open GG Xrd REV 5. A new tab should have opened for the game on uMod. Drag the mod files into the white bottom box (the box that has labels Title, A, D, Author and Comment) 6. Mod successfully installed! If game crashes, just keep uMod open and open GG again. Notes: You will have to Open uMod and continue from Step 4 everytime you open GG Xrd. This is because the texture changes aren't saved permanently. Currently there is no way to do that.

Questions that you may have:

Q: “When I reopened Guilty Gear, the texture didn’t save.” A: That’s because uMod doesn’t replace these textures permanently. You’ll have to open uMod everytime.

Q: “uMod didn’t change my game’s textures.” A: Make sure you always open uMod first, then Guilty Gear. It also could have been because you’ve changed the file’s names.

Relationships: Just his team. Has respect for Sonnya Danae. Takes care of Tenna, in his own distant way.

Weapons: Alchemist’s Shortbow, Peacemaker’s Sword, Sunspear Warsickle. Not much is known about Cyrus. Disaffected by the big city, Cyrus had a chance encounter with a sylvari who was on a mission to learn from all the races. A sylvari named Ceara. Becoming acquaintances, they kept in touch via mail until she dropped off the map. Having been accepted into the Durmand Priory, Cyrus continued to find disatisfaction everywhere; The Priory’s library and archives were full of lost knowledge and random bits of magical and technical innovation…that they were doing absolutely nothing with. His frustration grew to the point he was almost on notice by Steward Gixx, when the War in Orr concluded. Cyrus was considering leaving the Priory when a piece of mail arrived with a familiar name on it. Ceara was in Lion’s Arch and wanted to talk.

Upon arrival, he quickly learned she had changed very much in the last year, and no longer referred to herself as Ceara. Instead, she called herself Scarlet Briar. And she had a job opportunity for him. Access to all kinds of technology and technomagical research, unhindered and unfettered so long as it aided her goal.

Cyrus never asked what the goal was. He didn’t care much. While she talked about building an army, about planting an agent on the Captain’s council in Lion’s Arch, all he saw were the designs she was creating. The weapons. The armor. The self-mobile devices.

It was part-way through her attacks on Tyria, when she brought out the Marionette, that Cyrus questioned her. Her motives. The need for a weapon that could annihilate an entire region of the world. Partly through arrogance, but partly because some part of her remembered their pleasant conversations in the past, she told him. Told him the Truth.

He stayed by her side a bit longer, as she stole Queen Jennah’s Watchwork creatures and remoulded them – hacked them – into machines she needed. He stayed while her probes sent pulses that woke a horrific, multi-headed Jungle Wurm in the Bloodtide Coast.

But when she declared she would burn Tyria to the ground in her pursuit, in violation of that Truth she had told him, he realized her madness had taken over. It was no longer the frantic pursuit of her Goal anymore; the fear and insanity she’d kept at bay had long-since taken over. The Marionette was left discarded as she retooled her flagship. The final Goal of the plan was still in effect but… Scarlet was barely cognizant of it. The fight was what she was pursuing now. Testing her own prowess, her gear, her troops, all her weapons… they were no longer for the Goal, but toys for her to lay terror into the heart of Tyria. So he left. He told her he was leaving, and swore to her that he’d not give up any secrets he’d gleaned. And through the haze of madness, she had oddly accepted it. No troops sent to find him. No assumption that he’d turn over information to the authorities. Once again, that long-ago friendship poked through. Later that year, after the Tower of Nightmares incident, Cyrus was among the ‘ally’ troops that re-invaded Lion’s Arch amidst the Miasma. He pretended to fight alongside them until he was on the Breachmaker, where he and his pet faded away into the shadows, using their own IDs and passcodes to access the systems of the ship. What he saw worried him. The damage the Pact was doing to the Breachmaker in their heady rush to get to Scarlet and to stop the machine was destabilizing it. The fine-tuned mechanisms were going off kilter. Generators overloading, systems frying all around. The ship was NOT going to do what it was supposed to do. In fact…all evidence pointed to something worse happening. He tried to warn her, but she was too far gone. A single moment of clarity had her tell him to evacuate. The last dying gasp of the friend within the monster. Cyrus didn’t wait around. He was gone from Lion’s Arch before the Breachmaker went down. Before its death signalled the waking of the Elder Dragon Mordremoth. Before the Goal was completely and utterly failed in the most spectacular way. Hiding the fact he had been an Aetherblade by association, Cyrus tried to find purpose again. Meaning. The Gods said nothing to him. The Pale Tree looked at him funny when he asked odd questions. He stayed away from Divinity’s Reach because he couldn’t be sure if any surviving Aetherblades would have recognized him as being one of them. Along the way, he ended up encountering first Verula Faithbreaker, late of the Iron Legion, and befriending the curmudgeonly grumpy warrior, as well as drawing the attention of the aloof Moryggan Deralith, a sylvari mesmer who’s skill with the blade matched his own. Finally, through Priory contacts he’d nearly forgotten he had, he’d recieved word from a certain Asura named Tenna Danae. She needed help and was recruiting krewe members. The odder the better. Of course he accepted. Even with her strange virus coursing through her veins, Tenna didn’t shock him. Very little did, honestly. If anything, in spite of her enhancements, he found that Tenna was more vulnerable now than before; if the virus got out of hand, she needed to be monitored, fed, and kept from doing heinous things. Between him and the rest of the team, they could manage that. Just like they could manage each other. He now wears his personal Aetherblade Magitech armor in public; enough time has passed that the sight of the armor isn’t a threat. With Tenna’s and Verula’s help both with technomagical things and metal-crafting, his suit contains all kinds of hidden features that were merely wishful thinking when he was an Aetherblade. Things that had been on the design table but never were implemented. As a Ranger, he’s quite odd, with his obsession for technology, and swears that one day he will be able to use rifles and pistols effectively. It’s only a matter of time. —- (Notes from Me: Okay…first thing’s first. Cyrus technically has TWO backstories, but I’m really embarrassed by the other one, since it, and him, are literally Self-Inserts. LoL. I literally made him to put MYSELF in the game as best I could. I hadn’t made good Ranger yet, and I wanted to learn how to play as one, so I made him one, even though he should have been a Thief or Engineer. Even writing his OTHER backstory down embarrasses me, because it takes a lateral step to the left and implies things that aren’t game related. So rather than Gary-Stu, I gave him the background above. Which is kinda disjointed, honestly, but you can at least follow a timeline. I just didn’t include specific things. It’s all kinda general. He’s kinda a guilty-pleasure. As a Self-Insert, I made him to represent me. He was supposed to just stay that way, but when I started writing up stories and then made characters like Tenna and Miriya and Sonnya, and the others, I realized that in addition to the A-Team, I needed the B-Team. The Outcasts. The Other Guys. And so I ended up linking him to them. Specifically, he and Tenna had kinda worked together in the Priory on a few projects, even if it was by mail. That’s how she knew to contact him, especially when she learned he’d stepped away from the Priory like she had. Kind of a kindred spirit. One of these days, I’ll get a proper Avvie pic of him done to replace the screenshot I have for my avvie here. That bruise on his face and eye isn’t actually supposed to be a scar or anything. There was a story to that, but it’s pretty self-indulgent. So think what you like about it. Edit: had to reupload when I realized that the images were all shrunk and tiny. WTF Tumblr.)
