Recently, I've been told that, in order to be a teacher, you have to be mentally stable and transmit this peace of mind to your students. I do agree with this sentence, in fact, you are the adult who has to motivate, in my case, teenagers to develop a set of skills that will help them grow and create an identity. However, how can we face a class that is unwilling to learn and shows no interest other than talking about Instagram and spending time at home on their phones? This has been the answer I've received to the question "what are your hobbies" from one of my groups. I created an Instagram account to upload memes for my students and even used these to teach grammar. However, it's constantly a challenge to motivate my 14-year-old students who are obligated to attend the language academy due to their parents' will.
For me, this is mentally draining.

Book Bans Spreading Fast
Book Bans Spread to Iowa
Book bans are not about protecting children, but about silencing LGBT voices and controlling what is allowed to be taught to children. Authorities in Iowa are pushing for a broad crackdown on what books are allowed to be kept in school libraries. Republican Governor Kim Reynolds is backing a bill that would require every school district in the state to remove a book if it’s challenged in any one…

FEATURES OF THE PRODUCT – DIGITAL TEACHER
The product presents a Unit Plan to the teachers which can either be adopted as it is or customized as per their needs in the planning stage of the instruction delivery.

The pace of instruction delivery is placed in the hands of the teacher through the “Overview” section of the product, which gives a bird’s eye view of the subject matter of a particular unit. A typical unit is divided into Introduction, Instruction and Evaluation sections on the lines of standard teaching-learning process. The content under Introduction section is divided into three sections, which helps the teacher to recall the previous content covered, maintain continuity of the subject. The content under Instruction section is divided into several types, namely, the “Concept Model/Activity”, “Law/Principle”, “Theory/Lab Activity”,
“Derivation/Numerical Problems” and “Uses/Applications”, based on the nature of the science subjects.Concepts and processes presented using animation and procedures are shown via Simulations requiring minimal intervention through simple navigation system.
At the end of the syllabus coverage, important instructions are presented in a nutshell for the recapitulation of the learners in the Summary section. Important Keywords are listed with links to the slides where their corresponding concept is covered in detail.
The Reference section provides links to rich multimedia resources available on the internet for the teacher to explore further on the subject.
It is essential that the students remain in touch with the subject matter taught in the classroom even after they leave the learning environment. Suggestions to the teachers on homework and project assignment for their student are provided under Follow-up Work section, to address this challenge.

What specifically is a closed practice? I’ve tried looking it up but I get very vague confusing answers.
Hello Anon,
I think you've actually touched on a larger issue people seem to have when discussing this topic. Most people want an "exact" definition of what a "closed practice" is, and seem to become frustrated when they realize that it is a more complex conversation.
Generally speaking? When a practice is "closed" that means that it is off limits to "outsiders". What constitutes an "outsider"? That definition also varies from tradition to tradition, and usually depends on the reason the practice is closed.
Often times a practice is closed because it belongs within the context of a larger culture that has experienced oppression for their beliefs. Simultaneously, those cultures may be dealing with the appropriation of their beliefs, which can further dislocate the practice from its original application and spiritual significance; this spreads misinformation, creates misconception, and can ultimately lead to demonization. All of which contribute to cultural colonization and genocide.
Sometimes it is this and more.
For some practices they are specific to a religion, and are completely closed to any outsiders that are not apart of it. For some it is because the practices themselves were born out of oppression, and are considered the spiritual inheritance of those who share in that struggle. For others still, it may simply be a question of proper initiation and to proceed without it is disrespectful of the educaton necessary to participate in the practice.
There can be any number of reasons to why a practice is "closed", many of which I haven't even listed.
The main thing I think everyone should keep in mind about "closed" practices is this:
When an oppressed cultural group, or people tell you their practice is closed the goal is not "exclusion". It is, in essence, a boundary based on complex historical, cultural and spiritual factors. To violate that boundary is to violate a community's autonomy.
This is partly why I say that studying is important. Vigilant study will allow you not only to understand the theory and philosophy behind a practice, or to know which practices are closed, but will also allow you to treat a spirituality with the reverence and respect it deserves.
Thanks for the question, hope this helped.

Writing out some thoughts about my upcoming master project or art in general helps, so I’m babbling a bit under the cut! It’s really more an outlet of some thoughts before the upcoming first feedback session for my final uni project...
Since reading Trigun all I want to do really for my Master thesis project is create somethin with an postapoyalyptic wasteland setting. Or so. I need to come up with 2 ideas until tomorror, or at least have some sketches to show... Though I get it’s important not too fall into stereotypes too easily and try to find a unique style, being constantly told Manga or everything that’s being too cliché comic is not something they are very happy about at my place of study, is still something that’s keeping me down in a way? Kinda? It’s making me actually a bit angry and sad, seeing some pretty neat animated short movies in anime style and knowing if I wanted to try a concept like this the first resonse would probably be pretty sceptical. Though I guess it depends more so on the teacher, I don’t want to throw a bad light on my school in general. Maybe I’m being a bit too pessimistic about that, you know, without really having tried it. The thing is, I just want to create neat designs and art for a project that I like, but I don’t neccessarily want to come up with my own ideas. That’s why I draw so much fanart, I love to indulge in others’ ideas and characters that are interesting, but I don’t have some kind of educatonal purpose or agenda I want to tell myself, because there are enough guys out there who do that pretty well. I just hope I’m strong willed enough to stay to my ideas, and not be talked into a direction that I don’t want to pursue professionally - at least not mainly. I like illustration and book illustration a lot, don’t get me wrong, but I love drawing characters, emotions and scenes just so much more. Even animation which I started a bit more than 2 years ago is to me so much more fascinating, because you know, you can make these characters move! And bring them to life! Phew. I’ll need to prepare a pdf for tomorrow, so I should get back to working out 2 ideas, and put them into some kind of understandable shape. If you really read so far, I’m raising my cup of hot chocolate in respect

Review: Needle by Patrice Lawrence
Tumblr media
I have read a few books by Patrice Lawrence and consider her to be one of the queens of Black British YA books. Her characters are always so raw and real and her writing feels so urgent. So, I was delighted to have the chance to pick up this short story that she wrote for dyslexia-friendly publisher Barrington Stoke.
Charlene loves knitting and her latest project is set to be a present for the little sister that she doesn’t see anymore. But when her foster mother’s son destroys her work, Charlene snaps and stabs him with a knittting needle causing major damage. Suddenly, Charlene is in big trouble but everyone keeps telling her to apologise in order to make things easier for herself. But Charlene has never apologised and she isn’t about to start now.
Tumblr media
Knitting is a soothing method for Charlene, as I know it is for so many knitters. Charlene’s foster mother Annie tries to introduce her to other ways of relaxing but Charlene is only interested in knitting. Due to her fixations and rigid mindset, I did wonder whether Charlene is on the autism spectrum. She definitely shows some sign of it but as it isn’t mentioned in the story, I don’t think it’s something we can say for sure.
Tumblr media
Charlene is aware of the realities of being a Black teenager, especially a Black teen in care. She knows the judgements that white people make about her and about Black people in general. I love that this book addressed systemic racism in a slightly different way to how it’s usually addressed in books. It’s not completely blatant in this story and that goes to show that it isn’t always explicit in real life.
Tumblr media
It seems that even Charlene’s school don’t really understand her or take anything into account beyond her circumstances. She is placed in lower sets for everything, simply because of the fact that she’s a ‘troubled kid in care’. It’s also a commentary on how class affects education, no matter what school a kid ends up in.
Tumblr media
There is a lot of depiction on what it’s like to be a working class Brit. So many little details like the nappy blocking the window can only have come from Lawrence’s real life experience or observation and honestly, that image broke my heart. How can one of the wealthiest cities in the world still have residents that live like this? And of course, this is just the surface of the realities of urban poverty.
Needle is a fast-paced, engaging and educatonal read about a girl fighting for what she believes in within a world that doesn’t want her to win. It’s the same fight that many young people are fighting in our own world and these stories need to be told. Told with punch and power, Needle is a glimpse into a teen experience that many of us can barely imagine.
