Edwin Week 2023: Day 2: Purpose
In which Winry writes a letter to the person she misses. Set post-03 but pre-CoS.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ed,
I don’t really know what the purpose of this letter is, other than I have too many words to say and the person I want to say them to isn’t here. And if you’re wondering, yes, that’s you. Where the hell have you gone? How could you just disappear without a trace or an explanation? You’re a pain in the ass on a good day but this is a whole new level of fucking asshole douchebag behaviour.
And still, I want you to come back. There’s so much you’re missing out on. Gracia’s apple pie is still as delicious and she’s been teaching me the recipe. Elicia asks about you constantly. Rose is staying with us with her son. I know she thinks about you too. She blames herself, even though she won’t say it. So if you could come back, like, now, it’d be great.
I watch the seasons change. Spring has come and gone and summer is just around the corner. Al and I are going to the summer festival but I can’t help but think it’s not the same without you. You should be here. Why aren’t you here? Are you coming back?
I went to Central alone and saw you in every blonde boy with a braid. Hope rises and falls like a breath but I lose my breath for every person I think is you. It’s always disappointing when it’s not you.
I have to move on. Maybe you’re dead and never coming back. Maybe you’re stuck in some alternate dimension or been kidnapped by aliens (I swear, the things Sciezka will come up with). Maybe you decided you had enough of this life and wanted a new one. I have no idea and I’d give up all my limbs to have an explanation.
I wish you’d let me be there in your pain and your grief instead of shutting me out time after time. I know I can’t change the world or take away the things that haunt you, but I can’t help but think things could’ve been different if you’d given me more information. If you’d shared your pain instead of hoarding it like some dragon guarding gold.
You need people, Ed. Pain never eases by isolating yourself and waiting for alchemy, fate, time, to one day show up and make you better. You get through grief by living. By getting out of bed and opening the windows even when you’d rather shut the blinds. By being around the people who love you and care about you even when you’d rather be alone. Grief is a treacherous being that will make you think nobody understands and only you can get through it alone. And maybe people won’t understand. But let them try. Let them in. You might be surprised.
We want to be there for you. I want to be there for you. To give you hope, faith, and a new sense of purpose. To tell you that life is worth living, even though the people you have lost aren’t there anymore. How people never really die, but live on in the parts of your heart they have touched.
I hope you’re happy, wherever you are. But I also hope you will think of us, of me, and return home. You’ll always have a home here, even if you want to burn it down. I know I shouldn’t wait for you, but I can’t help but stand on my balcony every night and shine a light over the hills, praying for your return.
Come back, Ed. I miss you. Come home.
Your automail junkie,
Winry

Edwin Week 2022: Day 6: Secrets
@503week
(Two in one day because they were both half written)
Day 1  Day 2  Day 3  Day 4  Day 5
Characters: Edward Elric, Winry Rockbell, Alphonse Elric
Fanfiction
AO3
Despite what his behavior might indicate, Edward Elric had never been very good at keeping secrets. He was much more likely to just admit to something than try to weave an intricate tale to avoid conversations. He often operated under the assumption that if he knew it, other people must also know it, since it was so obvious to him.
As children, Al and Winry would often be the ones to pinky-promise or hide things from adults, quick to conspire or build elaborate stories to avoid having to spill their own secrets. They were the ones awake at night, whispering and giggling stories or made up tales to each other, while Ed slept like a log, ignorant of whatever conspiracy was developing between his brother and best friend.
So good at keeping to their chest any details or plots, that Winry and Alphonse would never actually tell Ed what they had done even if he was well wrapped up into it and its consequences.
The first time Ed experienced this was when he was left standing in front of a sopping wet Granny, hands on her hips and rage burning in her eyes.
“Don’t give me that crap, Edward. You’re the only one smart enough to have rigged the sink to spray right at my face level.”
Ed’s mouth was agape and he wavered where he stood. He had walked into the kitchen right as the mentioned offense happened, the water pressure being strong enough to knock Granny’s glasses right off of her face and knock her backwards.
Ed squirmed under the stern gaze of the older woman. “I’m serious Granny. I had nothing to do with it.”
A finger whipped up into his face, accusations flying behind it. “So you just happened to walk in when I got hit with a water jet?!”
Ed nodded. “I just wanted a snack. I didn’t know that would happen. It could have happened to me!”
“Which is exactly how I know it was you. You are the same height as me and would have used that to develop the angle for the water.”
“No!”
“Yes, you little shrimp. And don’t you blame this on anyone else. You’re the only genius in this house who could have done something to my faucet. Now fix it!”
Ed continued his griping and whining as he spent the rest of his beautiful summer afternoon fixing a faucet he most definitely didn’t mess with in the first place. He didn’t know much about faucets to begin with, and this one wasn’t a simple band trick around the spout. He had to go get tools to pull out a specialized curved rock that had been shoved up it to achieve the perfect face spray.
He was so caught up in the indignation that he was being blamed for the whole incident that he never once thought to consider who might have done it. That ‘who’ being another alchemist and mechanic duo with little fingers but crafty minds.
At dinner the agreement between Ed and Granny continued, causing the two of them to miss the exchanged sheepish looks shared between the actual pranksters.
The whole faucet occurrence was forgotten soon after, the attempted human transmutation taking forefront in their lives and overshadowing any memory of small spats such as that.
Promise day came and went, bringing with it the aftermath of fixing past mistakes and leaving a future uncertain. Ed and Al moved back in with Granny and Winry, working on rehabilitating their bodies and readjusting their minds to civilian life.
Ed had always been so busy and caught up in his tasks while working as a state alchemist that he had all together lost his ability to just evade answering questions.
Was it a byproduct of being forced to answer to higher ups? Or was it just his unwillingness to put brain power into weaving a lie or vaguely answering when he had better things to think about, like all things alchemy? The world may never know.
“Ed!” Winry had shouted at him in disbelief one day when they were walking back from town with groceries in hand. “The least you could have done is lie!”
“Why?!” Ed was flustered and annoyed at being in trouble. “They asked for my opinion and I gave it!”
“You all but told them their design was garbage. Didn’t you see how dejected they looked after that!”
Ed worked his jaw, trying to come up with a retort. He didn’t have one so he just repeated himself. “They wanted to know what I thought.”
Winry huffed loudly, snapping her head to look straight ahead, so angry at his previous behavior and current response. “They are kids, Ed! They look up to and want to be an alchemist just like you. You could have told them what they did right with the circle thing instead of pointing out the lines weren’t sharp.”
“If they aren’t crisp and clean it doesn’t work. It’ll help them in the long run to know things like that!”
“Not everyone is as good as you are with learning. Sometimes focusing on the good helps people more. Even if it has to be a lie at the moment.”
Ed felt bewildered. Winry had stop shouting at him and was now just annoyed in her tone. The walk home was long with the silence that has fallen between them. Ed stopped at the stoop, wanting to say something to Winry, but she spoke first.
“You know, that is why Al and I never included you in our pranks as kids.”
Ed’s eyes shot up to hers, looking down at him from the door way. “What?”
“You can’t ever tell a fib or keep a secret if asked directly. We knew you would indirectly rat us out to adults, so we just didn’t tell you anything. That way you couldn’t get us in trouble.”
All the times Ed had been scolded by adults for the weird happenings as a kid came flooding back into his mind. The school teacher being upset with him for messing up the composition of her chalk. The farmer down the road mad that the fence’s hinges were too tight and he couldn’t open it. The store clerk chasing him down for the soda fountain rupturing from the excessive pressure on the carbonated water canisters.
Granny making him fix the faucet.
Ed reeled back on his heels. He couldn’t believe what was just revealed to him. All those times he was blamed by adults for the shenanigans going on, and it was the always ‘innocent’ Al and Winry at the center of it.
Winry shot him a look that clearly said, “What’s your problem?”, and he was shot out of his internal reeling to drop the basket of groceries, causing a loud “The hell, shrimp?” from granny, and flew his right hand up to point with rage at the woman in front of him.
“IT WAS ALL YOUR DOING?”
Winry, clearly unaware of what caused the outburst and unamused by his action of dropping the produce, rolled her eyes at him before turning around to enter the house. Ed didn’t pick up the forgotten potatoes, broccoli, apples, and other foods, choosing instead to be hot on Winry’s heels into the house. Granny would later pick it all up while muttering about how useless Ed was. Ed’s focus was elsewhere – getting to the bottom of this apparent life-long secret of keeping him out of the loop.

Trinkets (Edwin Week 2022 Day 2)
It’s a weird thing, really, to walk back to the crime scene, the place where he and Winry almost died. Where he saw a man shed his mask and unveil the worst of humanity.
All for a trinket.
It’s not superstitious, he convinces himself as he tries to swallow back the bile and the scream in his throat, walking amongst the corpses of the pigs and seeing the chain that held her captive, the chair imprinted with his blood from the cut on his shoulder. The wound still tugs at him, sometimes. The guilt, too.
He finds it rather quickly, after his eyes scan the area and settle upon the tiny, shiny piece of metal. He picks it up and pockets it, and almost chuckles to himself. If it hadn’t been for this screw, he and Winry wouldn’t be alive. And Barry would still be living up to the “chopper” part of his name. In all their bad luck, this little object was a sliver of hope.
Okay, maybe he’s a little stitious after all.
He keeps it in his pocket. It follows him everywhere he goes, from Youswell to Liore, from hostel to hotel, bunk beds and his old room at Pinako’s. Home, although he’d never admit it. He doesn’t deserve one, anyway. Not until Al is human and his own limbs are flesh and blood.
By some supernatural design or pure luck (he doesn’t believe in either) or a freaky glitch in the equivalent exchange, it stays in his pocket. Even when Izumi beats him black and blue, when Greed tosses him around Dante’s mansion. It’s still there. Even when Envy kills him, when Ed sacrifices his life for Al, when he ends up in another world.
The screw remains.
Sometimes, late at night, when the thoughts of home feel like a bad fever dream and he is convinced he is in hell for his unforgivable sins, he twirls the screw around his fingers. It grounds him, reminds him he’s not losing his mind, that the people he loves and misses so deeply are real and waiting for him to come back.
Sometimes, the screw ends up pressed against his lips, and he hopes Winry can feel him, and know he’s alive. That he’ll come home, someday, and tell her about the screw that gave him a reason to keep going.
He doesn’t get to tell her about the screw.
Everything happens too fast, and he is reminded of his duty, his responsibility to any world he lives in. With a gate wide open and a bloodthirsty leader, Winry – the whole of Amestris, really – can never be safe.
He has to act for the greater good.
“Tell her thanks. She always made the best automail.”
And her trinket kept me alive.
It comes with him as he crosses the Gate yet again, alive, whole (although his entire soul is breaking). And now Al is here, memories intact, and Ed thinks he can breathe a little better.
——
It’s just a trinket, he says to anyone who asks.
It saved my life, he silently says to himself.
——
His apartment is filled with memorabilia.
News clippings, historical events, achievements from him, his colleagues and friends throughout the century he’s been alive. A doll from his great-great granddaughter, made with zero percent alchemy and two hundred percent love.
After he almost lost it while unpacking his boxes, so many years ago, it now sits on the table, never out of sight. His screw, his lucky token, his reminder she’s always watching over him, somehow.
The doorbell rings and he can hear their cheery clamour up the stairs. He smiles to himself. He better go and wake her. She’ll be overjoyed to see them.
He puts the photo of him and Al down and moves towards the door.
He stops in front of the screw and picks it up, before pressing his lips to it.
“Thank you, Winry” he whispers.
You always were the best.

Edwin Week 2022: Day 3: Snapshot
@503week
Day 1  Day 2   Day 4   Day 5    Day 6
Characters: Edward Elric, Roy Mustang, Riza Hawkeye
Fanfiction
AO3
His role as a General was all but forgotten by a certain Edward Elric. He was always calling him up at odd times, announcing himself with a loud, “Colonel *insert insult*!”
He wanted to be annoyed, but it was nice to hear from the Fullmetal Alchemist every once in a while. He was rarely around and often off and about doing what ever it is that Elrics do in their spare time. Riza was always crinkling around the eyes when she heard the brash voice echoing past the receiver.
He knew he wasn’t the only one who enjoyed the random calls.
“You’ll never guess what Eliza did today!” Edward’s voice reverberated through the office as Riza was filing away paperwork, so he knew that she was hearing it as well.
Roy rolled his eyes in jest. “She walked.”
The scoff was clearly insulted. “She’s nearly four. She’s been walking for a while now.” Without waiting for another halfhearted guess from his previous commander, Ed continued. “She drew her first transformation circle today. Okay, it was more of an oval, but still.
“Winry wasn’t impressed with the carpet being destroyed by a marker, but I think it’s great. We’ll always have her first attempt with us.”
Roy didn’t even try to stifle the smile that crossed his face. Riza was also softly smiling to herself.
Ed continued. “I tried to figure out what she was making with the circle, but in all honesty, I think it was just gibberish. She said it was to make apple pie, but the formula was all off.
“Ah! I did take a picture of it to send to you! You’ll have to tell me what you think of it. Winry said she was just copying something from my notes, but it must be a conglomeration of several circles.”
Roy laughed loudly at this. “Is she the next Fullmetal?”
“Ah hell no. She’s not going into the military. Not on my watch. She’s going to be a brilliant alchemist all of her own. Or maybe a mechanic. Right now, she thinks she’s going to be a ballerina, so her future could go anywhere.”
Roy leaned forward on his desk, resting his chin in his hand. Riza had stopped sorting through papers, and he knew she was just as enthralled with the story being regaled by their previous team member.
“But Thomas, now that kid is going to be an engineer! Yesterday he took apart the radio and put it back together! I mean, not in working order, but still. He nearly got it all together!
“Ah, speaking of which, he started school last week? Did I tell you about it?”
“Yes, Fullmetal, you did call to let me know Thomas was in school now.”
Roy could practically see Ed’s chest pump up with pride. “He’s way ahead of his classmates in reading too! Got to see his teacher in town the other day and was complimented on how brilliant my boy is!”
This caused Riza to look over her should and smile at him.
When Ed and Al were scouring the nation looking for ways to get their bodies back, it was rare that either of them would know anything about what they were doing. They were lucky if they even knew which side of the country they were on at any given time. Sometimes Ed would write or call to report, like he was supposed to, but never to the extent that a State Alchemist should. It was often a long game of telephone to get ahold of the brothers.
But now, Ed was frequently checking in to tell him about his family, or to call and tell Roy about a breakthrough he had with his research.
His lack of alchemy didn’t stop him from continuing his quest to find all the answers he could.
“Well,” Roy said, “he is an Elric.”
“And a Rockbell! Nothing but brilliant genes running through him!”
Ed shifted the conversation to how he was working on a way to better balance the levels in soil to get the best results for planting, his latest endeavor. Winry had gotten into planting and growing her own food to can, which meant Ed had to find his purpose in her new hobby.
Roy listened politely, taking in the feeling that Ed, the so troubled and tormented boy he had once met in a wheelchair so long ago, had found peace and happiness at last.
It would be just a few short days before a large envelope would arrive at his office, Ed’s atrocious handwriting sprawled across the front.
Riza would open it before Roy got into the office, taking her time to look at all the pictures Ed had sent along, with Winry’s neat printing on the back giving a description of what was going on in the picture. By the time Roy arrived, the snapshots into the Elric-Rockbell lives would be neatly sorted on his desk.
He would tuck them away in his desk, alongside all the other photos Ed had sent of his family, so that whenever he wanted, he could get a peek into the life of the boy who never could remember his title.
