Matthew Bagwell is actually an absolute sweetheart. He writes his Mum a letter every day, and as much as he loves his hometown he’s loving England. He wants to move his Mama over, especially with the fact that he’s pretty sure he fell in love with Edwina Sharma the second he walked into that little hall and saw her standing there.

He could hardly hear her answer when he asked her to dance because his heart was hammering so loudly in his chest. Her hand felt soft and warm in his and her smile as they swayed together was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.

He felt awkward and stilted as they sat beside one another, and he could feel her sister’s gaze on his back.

“Your sister is staring at us.”

Edwina rolled her eyes, “Oh she’s just being an older sister. You know how they are.”

He shook his head, “No Ma’am. I’m an only child. My Papa died when I was just a boy. It’s just me and my Ma now.”

She smiled, tilting her head, “Well you aren’t missing much. Though she’s my favourite person really.”

“I want to know all your favourites.” He said before he could think, feeling himself blush as he ducked his head. “I’m sorry. I only… I’m not very experienced with pretty girls and I…”

“Oh you think I’m pretty?” She teased him, her smile making his heart stutter again.

“No, I think you’re beautiful.”

“Well, that’s very charming.”

“It’s the truth.” He cleared his throat encouraged a little by the smile she was still giving him. “I’d like to see you again.”

Edwina’s brow furrowed for a moment before she hummed, “You’ll have to meet my mother. She’d never let me go out with a boy she didn’t know.”

Matthew’s heart leapt, “I can meet your Ma. Ma’s love me. I could walk you home and meet her tonight.”

“Well Ma Sharma might need a little warning.” Her hand was gentle on his harm, he could feel it through his uniform, “But I’d like to see you again also.”

“As long as I have a chance.”

Edwina's Children

For @edwinaweek I thought I'd share my headcanon for Edwina and Matthew Bagwell's children as part of my Bridgerton: The Next Generation series.

Jeremy Bagwell is born the day before his cousin Edmund's first birthday, and throughout their childhood the Bridgerton and Bagwell families would celebrate the birthdays together at Aubrey Hall, which was always an anticipated highlight of Jeremy's year. He was a very easy baby and rather quiet much to his parents curious disbelief, especially in comparison to the energetic chaos his cousins wreaked on a daily basis. But as he grew, it became apparent that Jeremy was simply a boy of a quieter nature, who was more than content with his own company and much preferred the peace and tranquility of his parents' library than the rough and tumble of the great outdoors. His favourite pastime was being read to by his parents, an activity which he didn't want to limit to just bedtime alone and he would eagerly run up to either parent throughout the day with books in hand requesting to be read to. When he was old enough to read himself he permanently had his head buried in a book, and he could often be found alongside his father in the library as they separately studied their favoured texts. Much like is father, Jeremy would go on to be a scholar, but instead of philosophy, Jeremy opted to become a professor of his lifelong passion; history. So engrossed was he with his educational role, he never showed much interest in settling down or even courting any of the eligible young ladies of the Ton. He never much cared for balls and parties, with the only social events he ever made an effort to attend being those hosted by his Aunt Kate. While he tended to stick close to his relatives, at one particular ball he slipped away to the library of Bridgerton House in search of a textbook he hadn't reread in several years; only to find the season's diamond tucked away reading the exact book he was after. Miss Theodosia Barrington was a reluctant diamond and had been shocked to named as the season's incomparable, especially when she hadn't wanted to take her bow in society in the first place. Much to his surprise Jeremy felt an instant bond with her, and then to his even greater surprise by the end of the season he had married a diamond of the first water, just like his father had before him.

Three years after their first, Edwina and Matthew welcomed baby number two, Francis, into the world. From very early on Francis was an incredibly smiley baby who adored every show of affection he was spoiled with. While his brother was happy to be independent and do his own thing, Francis loved being surrounded by others and would trail after his Mama, Papa, his brother Jem, the household staff, and any guests that came to visit. Someone he adored in particular was his dear Grandmama Mary, who he always ecstatically greeted with a great big hug and whose lap was his most favourite seat. In turn (as much as she claimed not to have favourites among her grandchildren), Mary couldn't help but possess a special fondness for Francis, not just in the way he loved her abundantly, but how his smile and shining eyes were the most reminiscent of her late husband out of her four grandsons. Francis thoroughly enjoyed his stays at Aubrey Hall throughout the years and loved running after his older cousins Edmund and Miles, as well as his cousins' cousins too, happily integrating himself among them as they played games together and hurtled around from one end of the estate to the other. His outgoing and personable nature carried on into adulthood, making plenty of friends along the way during his years abroad, as well as befriending perfect strangers in any ballroom and assembly room he stepped foot into. As delightfully affable and pleasing as Francis was, there were two weaknesses he possessed; pretty girls and suggestibility. With the former he often tended to fall hard and fast for ladies with winsome smiles and sweet temperaments, and had ended up suffering from a string of heartbreaks as a result. The latter was arguably the bigger flaw for him because as confident a young man as he was, he still relied on the approval of those in his life who he looked up to the most and would end up swaying to agree with whatever his role models advised of him in spite of his own thoughts and feelings on the respective matter at hand.

After another three year gap, the Bagwells welcomed their little girl, Maryam, born a month after her Cousin Charlotte. Edwina and Kate loved having daughters so close in age and much to Mary's amusement, Maryam was practically identical to Edwina as Charlotte was to Kate, and watching her granddaughters play and spend time together was just like watching Kate and Edwina twenty odd years before them. Maryam loved her big brothers and copied them both despite their contrasting natures; she'd lark and dance about with Francis as often as she would take a seat next to Jeremy and read a book alongside him (which she adorably did even before she had learnt how to read). She also loved to copy her Mama and enjoyed playing dress up in her mother's gowns and having her Mama style her hair to match hers. From a young age she adored bedtime stories of handsome princes and falling in love after a single dance, and naturally Edwina couldn't help bracing herself for the day her daughter wanted to make her debut into society and all the hopeless romantic antics it may bring - however Edwina was surprised when Maryam came to her about her debut and made the odd request to spend as little money on her gowns as possible. When Edwina asked why, Maryam expressed her worry of impressing the Queen too much and potentially ending up as diamond of the season just like her, not wanting to suffer the same pressures as Edwina had during her season. Sympathetic to her woes, Edwina assured her daughter that regardless if she was the diamond or not, she shouldn't feel burdened by any pressures of securing a prosperous match for the sake of bettering their family; all she wanted for her daughter was to find a love match and secure her happiness. With the reassurance that she would only be expected to marry for love, Maryam enjoyed her debut season alongside her Cousin Charlotte. Sure, not all the suitors she danced with or who called upon her impressed her much, but she was in no real rush to find her perfect match just yet - that is, until she attended David Basset's wedding and was introduced to the bride's brother, Mr. Benedict Woodson.

My chest heaves up and down rapidly, I flutter my brise fan, trying calm down.

“Calm down, bon” Kate says from beside me

The doors open in front of us, Anthony stepping through them. He walks closer to us, holding my stare as he does so. My heart races quickly.

“Miss Sharma” he greets Kate, making me look down.

I let out a sigh and walk into the room after him, Kate following behind. Everyone was already sitting. I sit down on an armchair, Kate next to me.

“Now, tell me of your wedding plans” The queen urges them, I look at Edwina and Anthony “There is no talk of a special license, I would hope” they chuckle nervously

“Of course not, your majesty” Mama assures her

“I believe a modest family affair would be fitting” Anthony adds “Perhaps back at the country, at Aubrey Hall”

“In the country” the queen raises an eyebrow “No, that would not do, you must have it here, in town, in fact, I should host the nuptials, myself” Edwina laughs cheerfully. I wipe my hands on my dress, smiling slightly.

“That is most generous, ma’am”

“Most generous”

“But not at all necessary-“

“nonsense” the queen cut Anthony off “ She is my diamond, after all, it is only right I give you both a wedding of that title” I grab a cup of tea to distract myself, swirling the spoon.

“Besides, one could almost credit me, myself, with bringing about this illustrious match” I stare at them as thoughts consume me, thinking back to a few nights before. Anthony looks back at me, sensing my stare.

“Can you believe it sisters” Edwina asks Kate and I “It is like a fairytale come true”

“You deserve nothing less, bon” I smile at her, Kate nodding agreeing

“Nothing less, for a true love match” the cup shakes my in hand, almost falling off.

“My apologies, your majesty” I say

“It is alright, my dear” the queen waves me off “Miss Y/n, now that you are here, there is someone I want you to meet.” I look at her questioningly

“A family friend” She explains “The Duke of Fairfield, I would rather think you both would make a marvelous match” I could feel Anthony’s stare on my face

“I would be most honored, indeed, your majesty” I say making her smile

“Perfect!” She exclaims “He will be there to see you in a few hours, the earlier you get to know him, the better”

“And we may just have two weddings done by the end of this season” my smile dimmed as I looked down at my tea cup.

“I do wonder about the trim” Edwina said as she tried on a wedding dress “Is it too much?”

“No” mama laughed “ Nothing is too much now that the queen is hosting”

“Let me show you the French tulle” Madame Delacroix offers

“Did I tell you both we will be married by the archbishop himself?” Edwina questioned, I turned my head towards her.

“Several times” Kate mused

“We must find you a dress too”

“Oh, we have plenty of dresses”

“This one must be special” She urged “and y/n, don’t you want to impress the Duke, I’ve seen you both get closer” a smile came onto my face.

Ah yes, the Duke of Fairfield, Louis Matthews. He is a young, handsome man of seven and twenty, he is kind, has a good sense of humor and very attentive. We share a lot of interests and I am sure I would have fallen in love with him, If only I met him first. Unfortunately, I didn’t.

“the Duke will not care what I wear, bon” I mused

“Besides, this wedding is very much your triumph as it is mine” She smiled at me “after all, whatever you said to the Viscount back at Aubrey Hall, clearly swayed him to declare himself” of course.

“I cannot claim credit”

“I shall bestow it all the same, it will be so exciting living in London, the Viscount said there might be snow this winter, won’t that be exciting”

“ May you recall that Y/n and I are returning back to India once you are married” Kate tells her

“But what about the Duke?” She frowns

“I may not even marry him, Edwina, it is not certain” I shook my head, sighing “ And even if I did, the Duke lives in Birmingham”

“But you both will return to visit, of course”

“Thank you, Clara, that will be all” I smiled at the maid and climbed up the stairs.

I walk past the drawing room before stopping and entering. “Lord Bridgerton?”

“Miss Y/n”

“Lord Bridgerton and his guest are waiting!” A footman stumbles in quickly, growing sheepish once he noticed us all staring at him.

“I see that, thank you” I sighed taking off my gloves

“This is the jeweler” Anthony nods to the man next to him “ We are to have Miss Edwina’s betrothal ring altered to fit”

“I am afraid my sister and my mother have not yet returned home” I smiled

“Of course, we should trouble you no further” he made to leave before the jeweler stopped him

“Is that cake?” He pointed to the table

“It is, indeed”

“lemon? I fancy a good lemon” he chuckles, I sighed frustrated

“Might I offer you some refreshments, Mr…”

“Brooks, only if you insist” he started to serve himself, I sighed and went to sit down on a chair

I looked at the Viscount who paced desperately. He turned his head towards me.

“It is a fine weather we are having Miss Y/n, I s it not?” I raised an eyebrow, humming

“You wish to speak to me about the weather?” I scoffed

“Is there another topic of conversation that would be more appropriate?” I stood up and walked closer to him

“There is nothing appropriate about what you are doing, proceeding with this engagement” I whispered furiously, insinuating about what happened, or what almost happened, between us.

“On the contrary, I believe it is the most proper outcome for all”

“Oh” I say “And what of everything that passed between us at Aubrey Hall?” I whispered

“Nothing passes between us, I am a gentleman, that was something that should not have happened and never will” I felt a sting in my chest

“Is that so?” I scoff to hide my pain “ might I remind you sir, if anyone other than your sister discovered us in that library, that night, then we too, would be obliged to wed”

“Nothing happened in that library, and even if someone else did discover us, they would think nothing of it, I was pursuing your sister, why would I change my mind from Miss Edwina to you?”

I looked at him with hurt plastered on my face, tears sting my eyes. I stepped further way from him, smiling sadly. “Of course”

“No, wait-“ panic filled his face “ I did not me-“

“Miss Y/n-“ Mr. Brooks started

“If that would be all gentlemen, you can wait for my mother and sister if you like, I must bid my farewell” I left the room, ignoring Anthony’s calls, wiping away my tears.

I breath in the fresh air of the park. The Duke walking by my side. We were currently promenading, Anthony and Edwina in front of us, Kate and Lady Danbury behind us.

“Are you okay? ”Louis asks “You seem a little down” I look up at him, before looking in front towards Edwina and Anthony, and back at him again.

“I” I sighed “ I am so sorry, my mind seems to he elsewhere ” I apologize, he chuckles

“You are in love with the Viscount” he affirms, I look at him with wide eyes

“What? Of course not!” I exclaim

“It is obvious” he chuckles, I sighed

“I am so sorry, your grace, I promise I was not leading you on or anything” I explain

“You do not need to explain anything” he says “ Although, I’ll just say, I do not care that you love him” I look at him confused

“You are a wonderful woman, and to be honest, I wish to marry you” I gape at him “I will try my best to woo you, if only you give me a chance, I cannot make you forget about your feelings for him, but maybe with time you will” I smile happily

“Alright” I laugh “Courtship first, your grace, although I do not promise anything”

“That is more than enough, and you may call me Louis, none of that, your grace, nonsense” he laughs “now, accompany me on a turn around the lake”

“ I would be delighted”

We walk towards the boats, walking past Anthony, Edwina and Lady Bridgerton, nodding in greeting and continuing our path.

“There is something I must admit” Louis says chuckling as we board the boats “I am afraid of riding on a boat”

“Why would you ask me to ride one then?” I smiled confused

“Well I wanted to do something sweet” he complains “ this seemed the perfect thing to do” I laugh

After a few minutes of laughter, jokes and talking. We return back to the port, Louis trying to tie the rope while we talk.

“I see you are smiling, deedee” Edwina approaches us, Anthony behind her. “See the amusements London has to offer?”

“indeed I have, maybe something, or someone, will change my mind, after all” I smile making Louis laugh, I pay no attention to Anthony’s figure behind Edwina.

“I hope I am that reason, Miss Y/n” Louis teases

“ just Y/n, please” I say

“That knot will never hold” Anthony says sourly and goes to help Louis

“It is perfectly adequate”

“Then I must question your skills, your grace” Anthony looks over at me while I roll my eyes “Allow me” Louis huffs and steps out of the boat, holding his hand out to me.

“Pardon me” Anthony says and holds his hand out also, Louis, once again, huffs and withdraws his hand

“the Duke was going to help me” I raise an eyebrow

“Just accept my hand” he sighs “please” I accept it and he pulls me out of the boat.

He holds my hand for a minute too long before I withdraw it harshly, making him stumble back and trip on Newton, who was laying down behind him. Taking Louis down into the lake with him. We all gasp, before I start laughing.

“Your grace, are you hurt?” I ask Louis who is laughing

“I am fine, thank you for asking” Anthony says angrily, taking off his cravat, his white shirt sticking to his body.

“Your grace” I hold my hand out towards Louis “You may catch a cold” he accepts my hand and steps up into the port, I hold his hand and walk away along with him.

“Oh yes, thank you for worrying about me also, Miss Y/n, what a caring future sister in law, you are” Anthony scoffs sarcastically, I ignore him.

I turn my head back and saw Anthony watching us walk away with an unreadable look on his face. I shook my head and turn back around

He is not my problem to worry about.

The way Matthew looks up to Anthony is so so sweet 🥺 especially given their different social standings in that time period! What does Anthony think of Matthew?

Anthony thinks Matthew is a "Good Lad."

He's intimidated by Matthew, due to their difference in social standing. Matthew is a gentleman and really, Anthony should be running running his grounds for him, not sitting at his dinner table, educating him on the finer points of sheep farming.

And for a short while Anthony can't quite figure out if Matthew is making fun of him or not. But there's something so congenial in the way he talks, and slaps Anthony on the shoulder and says to anyone who would listen Ah! Have you met my wife's brother in law? Mr Anthony Bridgerton? He and I are rather in it together, married to the Sharma girls! That Anthony's sure he's being genuine. He's just a very kind man who didn't hesitate to do what was best for Kate's family when it was necessary.

And for that Matthew Bagwell has his respect.

But what he will not have, is one of Nelson's foals. No matter how much he begs Anthony. Nelson's babies aren't for sale. Not even to family. One of the only people to have one is Miles, for his horse breeding venture, and that's only because technically they still belong on the farm.

I can imagine in the farmer AU when Kate ends up pregnant a less than a year later edwina is giving her a huge side eye. Like “I knew it… two people that got can’t keep apart for long”

Edwina holding her tiny nephew who's staring up at her with Kate's eyes in a face that is firmly her brother in law's. Her heart pounding over the way Anthony is hovering over Kate whispering quietly,

"Are you alright my love? Do you need anything?"

Before he goes to hover by his son.

"Edwina if you just-" As he adjusts her position slightly, running his hand over his son's head lightly.

"Thank you, Anthony" She says a little startled at being corrected on anything close to children by a man.

"Darling." Kate says, catching Anthony's attention whose at her side instantly, his eyes wide. "Perhaps you could fetch us some tea. Edwina's had a long journey. Or show Matthew the new horses."

A flicker of something uncomfortable passes over Anthony's face as he looks towards Matthew who'd looked up excitedly at the sound of his name. "I'd quite like to see the farm actually. I'm rather curious."

Anthony nodded slowly, pressing his lips against Kate's cheek, whispering quietly, "Send Gregory for me if you need me."

And Edwina couldn't help but stare at him as he jerks his head for Matthew to follow him, before they leave the sitting room.

"Well." Edwina couldn't help but say a little pointedly

But Kate sighs, "It's not that he doesn't like Matthew, he just feels nervous, out of place with him because Matthew's a gentleman."

Edwina waved her sister off, "Oh, not that, Matthew has the disposition of a rather friendly dog, it can be a bit off putting at first. I was more meaning to comment on your life here."

Kate raised her eyebrows , "What of it?"

Edwina couldn't fight the smirk on her face, "Sad to see you treated as such a governess."

Kate rolled her eyes, spinning the diamond ring they'd all been a little startled to see placed on her finger at her wedding little over a year ago. "You aren't amusing."

Edwina hummed. "The birthing of the master's first son is such a special time in a governess' life I've heard."

"I could always ask you to leave my house." Kate sighed.

"Honestly, probably for the best, I'm worried Matthew will ask Anthony if he can keep a lamb for himself. He thinks they're sweet."

And three weeks later Edwina is indeed bundled back into a carriage with her husband and Lambert between them.

So in Bruises, does there come a time when Matthew “Goose” Bagwell eventually heads back to Somerset after visiting Anthony and Kate in Kent with his wife in the carriage and one of the footmen minding a goose in a wicker cage for his hobby farm?

Edwina absolutely begging Kate not to let Anthony give Matthew anymore farm animals when they arrive.

"Kate, my house is overrun with them. I've already got a sheep living inside, and a goat, and he wants a donkey this time I can feel it."

And Kate just sighs, "Anthony, Darling, Edwina would see it as a personal favour if you wouldn't give her husband a donkey."

"Alright, Love!" Anthony smiles, kissing her cheek.

And Edwina was sure, this time, she was coming back from Kent unencumbered by a symbol of Matthew's fascination with how her sister and her husband live. Other than the tweed cap he had made to match Anthony's. And it absolutely was very sweet the way Matthew took to everything.

"Edwina! I'm herding sheep!"

"Edwina! Today Anthony let me hold the plough!"

"Edwina! Look! Eggs!"

Edwina just finds it all a little baffling.

And bloody somehow he ends up sitting in the carriage back to Bridgwater with a pair of goslings in a wicker basket between them.

Matthew had proudly shown them to her last night and she'd looked incredulously at her brother in law. "Anthony!"

"You said he couldn't have a donkey, these are much smaller." Anthony says barely paying attention as he rushed over to Kate to take Edmund out of her arms and fuss over her with his hand pressed to the swell of her stomach, murmuring so softly in Kate's ear making her smile so beautifully that Edwina can hardly be mad at him.

"And we'll have eggs!" Matthew added helpfully. "Big ones!"

"Are you very cross with me?" Matthew hummed as the carriage trundled forward shifting nervously.

And still Edwina can only sigh. "No. It's a good thing you're so handsome."

"I thought I'd name them Archibald and Jemima!"

"Lord!"
