All My Roads Lead Back to You Part 7

Hi guys! Now that “Rescue” is done, I’ll be focusing on this one a little bit more having already written 1000+ words in the next part. This one is cliffhanger-esque as well. A tad dramatic on Edie’s part. We find out what secret Edie’s being holding on to for a while.

Edie tapped nervously on the steering wheel of her Ford Focus. Her dad insisted she get a sensible car and got her a Focus. It was ugly as fuck, but it was new and that was what was really important to the assholes at school.

“You want to give me a preview of the shit storm that’s about to go down?” Harri asked.

Edie chewed on her lip as she deliberated what to tell him. “My mom liked brag about all the things she had done to my dad when she was drunk and feeling especially vicious. She wouldn’t tell Dad these things. Me. I don’t know how she thought that by revealing how vile she was I would want to live her, but she did.”

Harri thought for a moment. “Just how bad are we talking about?”

Edie gripped the steering wheel tighter until her knuckles turned white. “She would gaslight him.”

“Come again?” Harri asked, eyes wide.

“She would tell him one thing and say she had said another,” she said between clenched teeth.

“Holy hell,” Harri hissed. “And how on earth did she get away with that?”

Edie released the steering wheel with her fingers so she could stretch them out from how tightly she had gripped the wheel. “Dad had three concussions in three years, so his memory wasn’t good to start with.”

“Holy hell,” Harri said again. “Let me guess, ‘can’t talk about it because of the NDAs’?”

Edie nodded. “Well, for one of them anyway. Uncle Jonathan decked him once. Dad said he deserved that one.”

“What did he do?” Harri asked as the pulled into his driveway.

“Made fun of Uncle Will, Uncle Jonathan’s little brother,” Edie said with a wince. “Made fun of all the Byers, to be honest. But I think it was the bit about Uncle Will that really got Uncle Jonathan pissed. Because Uncle Will was missing at the time and Dad was still a bit of dick in high school.”

Harri shook his head. They both got out of the car. Harri closed the door and leaned on the roof of her car.

“And what was the second concussion?” he asked.

She let out a sigh. “Dad put himself between a bully that was threatening to kill someone Dad was in charge of and took a plate to the head.”

Harri tapped the top of the car and began walking to the front door. “Do you know who the target was?”

Edie shrugged. “I do, but he’s kinda famous, so I’m not allowed to say. It’s not an NDA or anything. Just a family secret, I guess.”

Harri shrugged back. He knew his family had plenty of those so he couldn’t really judge her for that.

He opened the door and called out, “Hey, Dad! I’m home!”

Eddie came out of his studio and shoved his hands in his pockets, staring down Edie.

“So Harri tells me you have a piece of the puzzle I didn’t have before regarding how shitty your dad was.”

Edie winced. She hoped she would be helping and not hurting things. “The list of things you don’t know could fill the ocean, I’d bet.”

Eddie huffed out a bitter laugh. “I suppose so. Well come on. I’ll make us a snack.”

Harri and Edie followed him into the kitchen. They sat at the counter on the bar stools. From what Edie could tell from what she’d seen of the house so far it was very different from hers. In both tone and color. Her house was bright blues and sunny yellows. The Munson house was earth tones. Browns and reds and oranges.

Her house was home, but this was homey.

Eddie got out some celery and carrots and began cutting them up.

“So how much do you know about my mother?” Edie asked.

Eddie shrugged. “I know everyone calls her a grade A bitch, but not much beyond that, I guess.”

Edie took a deep breath. “Right then you need a shit ton of backstory before I get to the main event.”

Eddie and Harri shared a look of concern.

“She was setup by my grandparents to steal Dad’s trust fund,” Edie said bitterly.

“I didn’t know your dad even had a trust fund...” Eddie admitted. He set the cut veggies in a bowl and started making his own ranch dressing for dipping.

Edie folded her hands in her lap. “He didn’t either. Not until he married her.”

Eddie raised an eyebrow. “Um...what now?”

“It was one of those you receive it when you turn twenty-one or when you get married kind of deals,” she explained. “Both of my great grandparents set it up when he was born and poured a lot of money into it over time and then upon their deaths, a sum of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars was put in the account. For each grandparent.”

“Your dad had a trust fund of a million dollars?” Harri asked, nearly choking on a carrot he’d snatched.

Edie shook her head. “Plus the interest and the money they had been putting into it since he was born it was worth seven point five million.”

Eddie eyes went wide as his jaw dropped. “That is a lot by today’s standard, twenty years ago that would have been quite the nest egg.”

She nodded.

“And your grandparents, what told her that she would get a cut of the trust if she married and then divorced him?” Harri asked.

Edie shrugged. “It’s a bit more complicated than that. She was to funnel the money from the trust to his parents’ account and then split town.”

“So what went wrong?” Eddie asked. “Because I’m guessing she didn’t get a red cent if she’s so bitter.”

Edie’s features grew hard. “Everyone thinks my dad is stupid but he’s not.”

“He’s never been,” Eddie agreed, he leaned against the counter and folded his arms and legs. “But go on.”

She nodded. “He decided not to touch the trust at all when they got married. He wanted to make it work on his own merits, so he got a financial advisor he could trust and started investing with it instead.”

“I’m betting your mom didn’t like that,” Harri said between bites.

“She’s not my mom,” Edie snapped. “Call her Addison if you have to use something other than ‘that bitch’, because someone who has only spent a total of a single year with me my entire life does NOT get the honorific of ‘mom’.”

She was breathing heavily and her cheeks were flushed with rage. Eddie came around the counter and began rubbing her wrists gently with his thumbs until her breathing even out and she no longer looked as though she was going to run.

“You okay now?” He asked bending his head down and round to her in the eye.

She nodded. “Sorry about that. She just makes me so mad. Not just because she was a horrible mom. But a horrible wife and worse person.”

“I’ve met more than a few of those,” Eddie agreed. “You think you can give us the Cliffnotes version of events?”

Edie looked between the two of them and then nodded. “Bitch cheated on Dad, Dad found out, divorced her, she found out trusts aren’t included in shared monies, and fucked the fuck right off.”

“She–she cheated on him?” Eddie asked a little breathless and lot pained.

Edie nodded. “It’s why Dad doesn’t date anymore. His last partner Andy Miller cheated on him, too. He said three strikes and he was out for good.”

Eddie eyes fluttered shut and he pursed his lips trying to hold back the tears that sprang unbidden to his eyes. He took a moment to get a hold of himself before he asked. “But all that isn’t the puzzle piece you mentioned before. That’s the backstory. So what’s the puzzle piece?”

She took a deep shuddering breath and let out slow and ragged. “I was born the week after Brian Martin’s funeral. Dad wanted to go, but Addison faked Braxton Hicks contractions and they spent the day at the hospital instead.”

Harri cried, “Faked?!”

Edie looked down at the counter again and traced her finger along the lines in the marble. “That’s what she told me. She didn’t want him connecting with his old crowd again because she was sure he’d leave her if he saw how much better life could be without her.”

“I’m not sure I understand the logic on that one,” Harri admitted.

“It’s because she wouldn’t have been able to fly out because it would be too close to her due date, huh?” Eddie said, pursing his lips.

Edie nodded. “Yeah.”

Eddie closed his eyes again and leaned on the counter, his head bowed. His hair hid his face as it traveled through the different emotions. That made more sense than Steve refusing to show. This was the age before cell phones and by the time someone would have gotten a hold of Steve, Eddie was too mad to hear the reason. Even if it was a good one.

“So yeah,” Edie said. “I don’t want you judging Dad for that. He may have done a lot of shit in his life, but that wasn’t one of them.”

Eddie nodded. As much as he wanted to still be angry at Steve over his not being at Brian’s funeral, viewed in this new light, it was impossible. He let out a low, shuddering breath, letting the hurt feelings go with it. He could forgive Steve this.

“Thanks,” he said. “You’re right, that does help in lessening the sting a bit.”

Edie nodded again. “It’s been so hard on Dad these last few years and he’s been struggling. He thinks he doesn’t have a reason to be upset or depressed, but the only friend with in easy visiting distance is Jeff and Uncle Dusty. But I don’t think he counts because him and Aunt Suzy are more like family. Everyone else has scattered to the literal ends of the earth.”

“Edie...” Eddie said, his shoulders slumping.

She held up her hands and waved them back and forth. “I’m not asking you to be BFFs or whatever. Just...a friend, I guess. Or something, I don’t know.” She got up out of her stool, head down. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have said anything.” She looked up at Eddie, tears in her eyes and then over at Harri. “About any of it.”

And then she ran out the door.

luffy is the one in charge of bringing the blunt to sanji and honestly he does a good job, if only to make sure sanji feeds him every time he goes to the kitchen.

When she does it's because Franky lit up and the smell woke her up

“Good afternoon, Commander.”

“EDI.” Shepard gets to her feet with marginal difficulty and embraces her. While EDI’s body looks physically unchanged, her gait is stiff and careful, her face lacking its normal fluidity. It’s not, all things considered, entirely unlike how Joker moves on his bad days, though today seems to be one of his better ones. “Glad you could both make it. Thanks for coming.”

“So this is where James has been posting up, huh?” Joker says, sinking down into one of the chaise lounges on the small balcony where Shepard sits. EDI takes the other wicker armchair opposite Shepard. “The Alliance gives out nice digs. If you don’t mind being trapped planetside, I guess. Where is he, anyway?”

“Ash got back this morning, so they went to get lunch at that Chinese place around the corner.” Shepard glances over the glass balcony railing. They’re only four stories up, but the street beneath them is surprisingly busy with skycar and foot traffic alike. It’s a clear day, sunny with only patches of clouds here and there; the late spring warmth feels good on her skin. “Garrus went with them. Hope they have something dextro.”

“Would you like me to perform a search of their menu?” EDI offers.

“No, no,” Shepard says hastily.

No! I do have just a few birthmarks tho, most notable one is on my hand

Do you drink tea or coffee? How do you take it?

I drink both! I really like hot tea, almost any blend (although I'm not a fan of particularly Earl Grey tea, it tastes gross) and sometimes sweet tea. As for coffee I like it pretty sweet, a med to light roast with some sugar and creamer! My mom only makes dark roast though :((

Stomach and side! Sometimes on the couch I make an exception for my back, but otherwise I physically cannot fall asleep laying on my back

Do you sleep with a stuffed animal?

Absolutely!! And if I can't get one to sleep with I'll usually bunch up a bit of my blanket and pretend it's one.

Do you prefer drawing or writing?

Usually I prefer writing, I'm a very word oriented person if that makes sense? Which is why even when watching TV shows in English I still use the captions because it makes things more comprehensive in my mind. But sometimes I like to draw! Especially if it's something that I don't know how to put into words that make sense, y'know?

What's your ideal number of blankets to sleep with?

Depends on how big each blanket is but usually 2!! Although I absolutely CANNOT tolerate a comforter/the big blanket that most people use over their sheets. I use throw blankets almost always.

I'd say right now it's Jack Starbur! Although earlier this year it was Destroy Boys, and I almost convinced my brother to take me to the concert with them, Mother Mother, and Cavetown because I love all of them but alas we had no money 😭

Fall!! It's a really beautiful time of year and it's the only time that the weather is actually tolerable in the whole year, and also marching band!

Oooo, I really want a few tattoos, mostly silly little ones of a few things, but I really want a big tattoo on my forearm of an anatomically correct heart!! Maybe on my shoulder instead but I can't decide!

YES. I've been wanting a tongue piercing called Frog Eyes for years!!!! It's 2 vertical piercings on each side of your tongue!! I might also want a nose piercing or something but mostly frog eyes!!!

Do you have a best friend? How long have you been friends.

I think the most obvious answer is Edie (who I've been friends with for a little over a year now) but it's actually my bed. his name is Bertha and we've been friends for 6ish years!

Who/what do you miss?

I miss my old home! I used to live in California a long time ago and I just really miss the air around their, the general sense of existence there as well. Our apartment was in Joshua Tree so there wasn't a lot of people around very often! It was nice out there.

How was your day today?

Pretty good I think! I got Dr. Pepper spilled on my pants at lunch but that was actually pretty funny! I also went and spent time at my friend's house! I always love going there even if I'm scared to ask to go 😭 but it's genuinely one of my favorite places to exist in besides my bed.

How much sleep did you get last night?

I took my melatonin and fell asleep around 11, so about 6 hours if you subtract the time I was awake at 3 with an ATROCIOUS cramp in my calf 😔. Shit hurt man, had me crying and everything 😭 it still kinda hurt today but it wasn't anything I couldn't ignore lmao (yes this was answered with the purpose of going on a rant about the cramp last night even though ive had them before more times than i can count)

Do you believe in aliens?

Dawg the universe is way to big for aliens NOT to exist. So yeah I guess lol

When was the last time you cried? Why?

This morning when I woke up at 3am with that fucking cramp. If you don't count that then I think probably a week or 2 ago because I thought my friend was mad at me

Probably the 2000's ngl, that or 170 BC

What are some seemingly childish things that you like?

WARRIOR CATS. and people I love coming to support me at things!! It's not really a childish thing but for me it's something I wanted so badly as a kid and eventually grew out of the need for people I care about to come to things like performances that are important to me (but I still wanted it to happen). But one of my friends has been coming sometimes when I ask them too and it's the best!!!

What's your favorite book? Or just one you've read a few times?

CLAWS BY MIKE GRINTI. I LOVE THAT BOOK SO MUCH. I had a copy a few years ago that I read about 7 times but I lost it on a school trip somewhere a few years back.

How are you, really?

At this very moment I am chillin 😎 I just got home recently and my stepdad bribed me to run errands for him with a pretzel. I got 2 of my books back from someone who's had them for a year and I was reading it earlier, it's a good book and I was gonna go back to reading it later tonight as well. It's Not Even Bones by Rebecca Schaeffer. My mom hasn't woken up for work yet and my stepdad is on his computer, my brother's at work, so it's pretty quiet in the house and nice and calm.

Does it take you a long time to make decisions?

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. It really just depends! But lately it's been a lot easier for me to just make a decision on a whim and go with it so decisions come a bit faster for me now

What are you looking forward to in the near future?

The eclipse! Don't tell my friend or my mom yet but I'm planning on asking if I can stay the night with my friend on Sunday and we can watch the eclipse together on Monday.

I'm also looking forward to getting a job, I've applied to a bunch of places and no one has really gotten back to me but I'm still trying!!

What are you looking forward to in the distant future?

Hmmm, I'd say college. But not starting college in general. I plan to get my bachelor's in psychology here nearby the town I live in but after that I plan on going to New York!! There's a college up there that I really wanna go to and I'm super excited to go there! Although I probably won't apply for another 10ish years, college is expensive and I need to save up

If you could go anywhere right now, where would you go?

Either to one of my friend's house or wherever in my dream last night that I got the hoodie I had in said dream

Open! I was never allowed to close it when I was younger and the habit stuck with me. That and I'm still not really allowed to close it very much ༎ຶ⁠‿⁠༎ຶ

Yeah! It's a little owl and it's small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, I got it last year or so from someone

Sometimes! I'm not allowed to have my phone at night anymore on school nights so it's really boring but sometimes I do stuff to keep me entertained like read or go for a walk. I try to go to sleep tho (which is why I take melatonin) because it makes waking up in the mornings just a little easier

Do you like the beach? Do you prefer it sunny or cloudy?

I've only been to the beach once when I was a little kid but it was still pretty mediocre. Maybe it'd be more fun now but I'm still not really gonna go out of my way to go to one, especially not by myself. If I do ever go to one again it'd be to have fun with whoever I'm with!

I have 1 brother 😁 he's 19

Although sometimes if I think for long enough I could probably say that Toby is my brother as well and get away with it. Someone actually thought he was my cousin or something one time

My friend 😭 the same friend I keep talking about lmao. Although idk if I actually said it or not but like body language??? Y'know? Not words but with actions and stuff. I count that as saying it tho sooo :D

MY CAT. and Cinnamon. And yes like half my friends but mainly the cats.

What do you need when you're sad?

Emotional support hot cocoa™. And a stuffed animal. And my hoodie. But mainly a nap or something. Sob my eyes out and then depersonalize and no longer be sad about it and just go to sleep lol

Yes but I don't trust myself that I have it memorized so I always check it to make sure

Toby and Edie probably. maybe Constance.

isang malaking katangahan ang nangyari kanina. it has been days since i moved in dito sa villa. Sa mga araw na yon, isang beses pa lang ako nag bath. half bath pa kasi nga malamig kaya napaka confident kong hindi maligo dahil hindi rin naman ako ganun lumalabas sa kwarto ng mga panahon na yan at hindi rin naman ako mabaho. when i decided to take a bath, hindi ko na maopen yung shower. nagtaka pa ko kasi alam kong gumana naman nung nakaraan. hanggang sa tatlong araw ng walang tubig na lumalabas. nagtanong na rin ako sa kasama ko dito sa villa tungkol don sa shower. sinabihan niya ko na meron hinihila don para lumabas yung tubig. eh hinanap ko, hindi ko mahanap! so inemail ko na yung landlord. tapos naalala ko, naka holiday pala siya. kaya wala din. pinalagpas ko pa ng isang araw hanggang sa kanina, tumawag na ko don sa isa pang contact person kung hindi mahagilap si landlord. edi okay na, nagpadala siya ng tao. walastik ka nga naman talaga nabiksen!!!! pinull on lang niya yung shower hanggang sa may tubig na lumabas. GAANO KATANGA?! UMABOT HANGGANG CANADA KATANGAHAN KO. 🤦🏻‍♀️

ayon, i apologized and told him that i wasted his time. tawa ako ng tawa sa katangahan ko. pati mga filipino kong kasama dito, di na napigilan tumawa dahil sa kawalang alam ko sa shower. lintik na yan. ayon, naligo na ko. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

after i took a bath, nagstay lang ako saglit sa common area namin hanggang sa napagpasyahan kong mag timmy’s. dinala ko na rin yung librong hiniram namin ni saad sa public library pati yung drivers handbook para di naman ako puro cellphone lang. nalungkot pa ako bahagya dahil hindi available yung fudge brownie latte ng timmys. so french vanilla na lang inorder ko haha!

it was sunny tho and finally started reading this kierra cass’s the selection series. thankfully that this book is available at the library kaya hindi na ako nahiya kay saad at pinakaskas ko na sa library card niya ang librong to. return date would be at the end of the month pero hindi ko na paaabutin to. tatapusin ko na to before pa yung meeting ko with my manager para pag off ni saad, maibalik na namin hiniram naming libro.

Bulalo o nilagang baka na may repolyo, petsay tagalog, green beans, patatas, saging saba at sweet yellow corn.

O kaya sinigang na bangus na maraming talbos ng kamote, okra, string beans, at kung available with sigarilyas.

Pwede rin sinigang na bangus na may puso ng saging.

Crispy sisig. Yung parang bagnet na ginawang sisig. Tas may sunny side up

Pritong tokwa(extra firm) na seasoned with asin, paminta, vetsin bago prinito sa mainit na kawali at mantika hanggang mag brown. Tas sawsawang suka na may raw or grilled red onion, pinisang garlic, sili, salt, sugar, paminta at konting liquid seasoning for color.

Adobong atay balunan na dry. Yung nagmamantika. Tas may drinks na malamig na malamig na Pepsi.

Mixed veggies na maraming nilagang itlog ng pugo na may sliced smoked ham, cauliflower, broccoli, young sweet corn at cream of mushroom.

Ampalaya con itlog. Isasapaw sa mainit na kanin

Simpleng donut. Yung nabibili lang sa bakery na coated ng brown na powder. Pwede rin bitso bitso. Kung sosyal edi Lola Nena's. Kung common edi Dunkin na bavarian or kahit anong donut ng Dunkin na coated ng puting powder tas kahit anong filling sa loob. Oh yes, the smell. Hmmm 🤤🤌🏻

With her birthday approaching, the singer entered "the Level 53 Final boss" era, atagline for her birthday bash concert on Saturday. But the prior week, she offered a deeply thoughtful explanation of why she's for the people.

Badu is famously spiritual and draws from her African ancestry to make connections, becoming aguiding light for her fans.

When DART announced an initiative to honor the Dallas legend with her very own Badu Bus, she was asked in a WFAA interview about the significance during Black His- tory Month of having her face on a bus in the city where she grew up—acity where her ancestors couldn't have taken a seat on the bus.

"That's why I chose the seat at the front. Not only ma I ta the front, Iam also at the back and ni the middle," she said ni the video. "Irepresent every single human being ni this city.
