oh wow this is an interesting detail. I love this whole section, but this idea she had of those trigger words...when you have a parent that's resentful towards the other and they bring them up. feels like a landmine. you can see this in the beginning when Evelyn is saying, "and what's your father do? bring her cookies." and Joy just looks so shut down.
this is also interesting in the context of Jobu's reaction to Evelyn and Waymond reconciling. she seems unconvinced, sarcastic. like the reconciliation is just a gap in the resentment, "I'm here to save you some time." it would be so difficult to believe that one parent who's looked down on the other was capable of changing that.
I wonder if this extends into Joy feeling defensive of her dad. we don't really see it, but they seem to have a good relationship (better than Joy and Evelyn), so I can imagine Joy has gone to bat for Waymond before. Or she might've inhereted some of her mother's scapegoating of him, but I imagine more the former with what we see of her.

I rlly like the narrative of eeaao bc it tells us that we weren’t ever really destined for “one” thing, we weren’t born to be a painter or an actor or a laundromat owner — we make different choices and those choices lead us places and the possibilities are endless. There are no “wrong choices” u can’t make a “wrong choice” …in every universe you are a different version of urself. Isn’t that somehow wonderful?

everything everywhere all at once is about intergenerational trauma. about depression and passive suicidality and the gravitational appeal of nothingness. about aging, getting older in your twenties and getting older in your fifties. about the specific hurt mothers can cause their daughters and daughters their mothers. about the harsh reality of the immigrant experience and the american dream. but it’s mostly about kindness and family and it’s about choosing to sit at home talking about taxes with someone who loves you, and it’s about telling your daughter that you’d choose her over the entire universe, and it’s about how even in the universes where life didn’t form, love can still exist. and it’s really all of that at once.

I don’t know! We’ll see what the next movie makes me realize about myself. It’s kind of- It’s, I don’t know. I’m so lucky I get to work out this trauma and stuff like that on the big screen. It’s bizarre! But I’m glad you connected with it all.

Before, you were asking about ‘our daughter’. It’s crazy. But... it really got me thinking... what if... you had come with me all those years ago.  You want to know what would have happened? ‘What if?’ We’d wake up everyday... in a tiny apartment... over a failing laundromat.  EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE (2022) dir. Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert

it's a great interview omg. also there is joy, jobu, and joybu (the end character). this is kinda crazy because I didn't take the joy/jobu differences very literally (just viewed it straightforwardly as joy's mulitplicity...or however straightforward you can be with multiplicity). so I thought jobu was kind of this shadow joy, one that did and said what joy repressed. the fantasy version of herself that joy pined for; someone flexible and callous enough to survive the emotional burden of her life. so by the end, I was thinking joy's major change is simply being received and loved, both as she is and for what she's coped with. but the fact that JOYBU exists means that the end state for joy is quite a bit more layered than I've been reading. she isn't meant to be read as the same entity, but an entity reconciling with another entity.
