Reading through the Heroes Ascension Book, and here’s the stuff I found that seemed like set up for future, likely sidelined story content :/

But there are also hints for stuff that could show up in the main blame through interactions and some possible new characters.

Rebuilding Ruins: Symmetra/Lifeweaver Story

• ⁠Lifeweaver is living at the Atlantic Arcology, which comes under attack by Null Sector, which could have been a major problem due to their “guests”.

• ⁠Symmetra is working against negative influences inside Vishkar, but how far that will get her is up in the air and Lifeweaver invites her to join him at the Arcology as a member of the “Collective”, an altruistic group of scientists and intellectuals.

Unity: Orisa/Efi Story

• ⁠Numbani comes under assault by Null Sector, with Humans defending their Omnic neighbors much more openly than other places.

• ⁠Efi creates a bunch of small drones to help defend Numbani, so that Orisa and her can leave Numbani to help people.

• ⁠Story ends with the pair planning on setting out immediately, and takes place around the same time as the Rio Mission, Efi may be seeking out Overwatch.

Luck of the Draw: Ashe Story

• ⁠Ashe and the Deadlocks were attempting to break into the Las Vegas criminal underground.

• ⁠Ashe nearly died defending BOB, who in turn is almost taken captive by Null Sector.

• ⁠It confirmed damaging or removing the “helmets” on an Omnic causes them to have a “seizure” and die. (What the fuck Rammatra?)

A Friendly Rivalry: Junkers Story.

• ⁠Junker Queen almost had Roadhog and Junkrat executed.

• ⁠Junkrat reveals his secret treasure: A giant airship stored within the last remnants of the Omnium beneath Junkertown. Queen and Hammond begin making plans to get it airborne again.

Thoughtless Gods: Hammond Story (And boy these is a lot of worldbuilding in this one)

• ⁠Direct sequel to the previous story.

• ⁠Reveals that Omnics remaining in the Outback are oddly feral and corrupted in some fashion, cannibalizing each other for parts and actively “hunting” Junkers. Hammond has no idea what caused this.

• ⁠Hammond remembers his time being experimented on the Moon Colony, he is apparently “older” than Winston has he gained awareness before hand, and sort of became a “big brother” to Winston.

• ⁠The apes and Hammond were not the first experiments. There were failures, apparently some other kind of animals, that are still up on the Moonbase. Hammond calls them “wrong”.

• ⁠The apes have a whole society, are building weapons and armor and may be constructing a whole new building/device on the Colony.

• ⁠Possible hints at the Mars Colony.

• ⁠Two apes are named. Oscar, unknown, and Dyson, a large, cruel Orangutan - feels like a character set up.

Where Honor Lives: Hanzo/Kiriko Story

• ⁠Shimada weaponry have “special energy tech”, throws more confusion on the “is this magic” question surrounding the Japanese characters abilities. The Hashimoto are attempting to copy the designs but “they can’t manifest the proper power”. (This seems to be due to Kiriko’s father purposefully give them shoddy work but they don’t know that).

• ⁠The Hashimoto can work with impunity in Tokyo, and are causing trouble even with Null Sector literally on the horizon.

• ⁠Hanzo and Kiriko’s interactions again confuse the whole age gap, because he treats her as if she was a tween when he was a teen.

• ⁠Hanzo joins Kiriko in protecting Kanezaka from the invasion.

Lost Ghosts: Soldier/Ana Story

• ⁠Ana splits from Jack after learning he’s been sitting on the list of Overwatch agent names using it to track Talon movements and not warning the targets. She isn’t joining Overwatch but is going to be trying to protect remaining Agents who haven’t answered the Recall but are not yet dead to Talon.

• ⁠We meet another old Overwatch agent Mirembe, who is thinking about answering the Recall, I think she’s the woman that was standing in the group photo from Ana’s trailer.

• ⁠Another, Kimiko, is named.

Lucky Man: Soldier/Sombra Story

• ⁠Sombra has been leaking info to Soldier, because she believes the cabal she is after is also to blame for that happened in Zurich.

• ⁠Jack has been hunting Talon as a proxy because he never truly believed they took down the HQ. He also doesn’t believe Reyes knew what was going to happen.

• ⁠Sombra and Jack seem to be set up to continue working together, and Jack is headed to Oasis hunting for more clues on the Cabal.

Do you think that the other characters forget Efi is only 12 (I think). Like she and Torbjorn spend the day going over super complicated schematics (and she even corrects him once or twice) then she puts on Power Puff Girl pajamas, watches Bluey while eating ice cream before bed? Could we get some fanteractions between her and the others?

I don't know if I discussed it on twitter or on here, but actually in the novel The Hero of Numbani, one of the things I thought was a really cute little world-buildy touch about how Efi interacts with the world at her age is that she often finds herself in these adult spaces, and the adults around her are drinking coffee, and they're like "uhhhh here" and they keep giving her coffee that's like... 50% milk and loaded with sugar--like it's clear they didn't really expect a kid to be in this situation and they're awkwardly doing what they can to try and accommodate her, and she partially recognizes that and also pushes boundaries and feels this need to prove herself.

Also like, 12 isn't really a "powerpuff girl pajamas and Bluey" age, 12 is like.. the age where you semi-convince yourself that you could probably stop arterial bleeding with your little bare 12-year-old hands if the situation called for it. 12 is when you're in a fucked up simultaneous state of "World is big and scary and my body is starting to do things I did not give it permission to do and I'm not ready" and also "I'm Nancy Drew levels of hypercompetent and you can't stop me." Ideally, 12 is where you're starting to push your own boundaries more and more but you're also kind of struggling with the fact that you are outgrowing things you used to really care about. You aren't quite at that asshole stage of "expanding independence but with very little concept of consequences" yet, but it is an age where you are grasping more and more complex concepts. But also your brain is still struggling to really make a leap into abstract/symbolic thinking, which is why algebra really sucks at that age. But again, Efi is a super-genius so developmentally she's at an even crazier intersection of what she can and can't do compared to her peers.

I don't want to put that pressure on you, but given everything you and Orisa have done for Numbani, your willingness to work with Lúcio before, and the position we're currently in, we would be honored if we could get your perspective on certain pieces of intel we have now.

Sojourn: I get it, it's a very scary situation, and if you just want to stay with your parents and the rest of the civilians, we'll still do everything in our power to keep you safe. Orisa is proving to be an incredible asset on her own. Really, Lúcio just remarked that you seemed very passionate about protecting your home, so if you would be interested in the chance to do that on a larger scale--

Efi: Do I have access to the armory?

Sojourn: Eh--?

Efi: Oh it's not for me, it's for Orisa.

Sojourn: Uhm...

You know who I wish got more lore? Efi and Orisa. Will she be contacted by Overwatch for her very clear talent and intelligence? Would she be ALLOWED to join? Would she or the other agents care about her age? Has she met any of the other OW characters in canon? Do they forget she's only like 13, or are they PAINFULLY aware and make sure not to say any adult things around her? Orisa seems comfortable and accepting of her role as the "defender of numbani," but I hope she gets a character arch where she discovers she has free will and learns to make her own decisions. What's the dynamic like between Efi and Orisa?

I do think that Efi will be contacted by Overwatch at some point and as I have stated in previous posts I think she's going to be a parallel to Mina Liao. Meaning she would be a part of Overwatch but in more of a tech support role, out of the conflict. In "The Hero of Numbani" Efi honestly isn't that concerned with her age and is often put off by people treating her like a kid so I don't think her age would bother her.

As for if she has met other Overwatch members, she's met Lucio and helped him and Orisa chase Doomfist out of Numbani. After those events they also met up with Sojourn who had a talk with them on what it meant to be a hero, which gave Efi the inspiration for the upgrades we see on Orisa in OW2. So I think it's highly likely that Lucio and Sojourn will get both Orisa and Efi to join OW, that or they're just going to show up and say they're joining.

As for her age in relation to other characters, I think some characters, specifically Jack, Baptiste, Ana, Cassidy and Angela would be hyper aware of her age, but not in the "this is a child so no swear words" more in the "I'm sorry you have to be a part of this and if it wasn't necessary you wouldn't be here at all". Jack and Ana as characters are already highly protective of the younger members of Overwatch, not to mention that Ana is a mother. As for Bap, Cass and Ange, all three of them where also kids during the Crisis, Cassidy being implied to have been on the streets during it, so I think they'd be making sure Efi is OK.

For Efi and Orisa's relationship, in the book Efi mentions feeling like a proud parent a lot but I think their dynamic is more sisterly then parental. The parental aspect only really being there because the relationship is still creator-creation.

I honestly can't wait to see more of Efi, I think her being in the story is such a good opportunity for character arcs and giving more light to different stories. It's the same with Illari and D.Va being relatively young when they started fighting.

are you telling me mercy is at least 60 years old. is that honestly more believable than her being 37. is it. the world is overwatch is far from unfamiliar with child prodigies, orisa was rebuilt and programmed by an 11 year old. the entire country of south korea depends on a group of gamers to run their military and fly high tech war machines and the captain of said group of gamers is a 19 year old super star. is mercy being a world renowned doctor by the age of 17 really that unrealistic.

AN INTERVIEW WITH INVENTOR EFI OLADELE

Already one of the world's foremost centers of scientific discovery and exploration, Numbani has a brilliant new mind to add to its ranks: Efi Oladele. In the last year, she's built a resume of impressive achievements in robotics and artificial intelligence, but perhaps most remarkably is that she's done all of this by the age of eleven. Last month, she became the most recent recipient of the Adawe Foundation's prestigious "genius grant," in recognition of her many accomplishments. She is undoubtedly someone whose career will be watched with great interest.

For this week's "Spotlight on Numbani," we had the opportunity to catch up with Efi to learn more about her and her plans for the future.

I'd like to start off by congratulating you, Efi. This is a tremendous, well-deserved honor. How do you feel?

Amazing! I wasn't expecting it at all, so it was a big surprise. At first, I thought it was a joke—like one of my friends playing a trick on me. It's been a week now and it still doesn't seem real, but I'm very happy about it. Much better than winning the science fair.

How did you get into robots and artificial intelligence?

Well, I've always been interested. After my mom and dad got me my first robotics kit, I became obsessed with putting together little drones. When I started to get good at it, I tried to build robots to do my chores and help around the house. My parents think it's cheating… It's no fair! (laughs)

I want to create things that make our lives better. And someday, my dream is to build something that can keep us safe, like the new OR15s! I think that would be great.

It's amazing what you've been able to accomplish at your age! How do you do it?

I'm not sure how to answer that. I just do it! I guess I'm very lucky that my parents put up with it. Robots can be messy, you know. And expensive.

Speaking of which, do you have any plans for what you're going to do with your grant? New computer? College tuition?

Oh… I have an idea…

It's a secret for now… but my parents are taking me on a trip to celebrate! It'll be my first time flying, so I can't wait.
