“You’re cute when you’re all worried.”

Inspired by @eggplantbun and their recent mermaid art for jeremwood!

When you are younger, you are taught that certain parts of the ocean were simply not meant to be discovered. It was an unspoken rule throughout the oceanic kingdom that you do not venture outside of the kingdom unless you were properly prepared, and even then it was risking your life just to discover the unknown. The king made it a rule that no one was to swim out there in risk of losing their lives. 

Ryan was not the smartest mercreature out there, of course. 

“This is a terrible idea,” Jeremy voices from beside him, the two of them packing satchels for their upcoming adventure. Jeremy had been hesitant at first about going with his boyfriend, not necessarily wanting to risk his life just to feed Ryan’s curiosity, but he was weak for Ryan’s puppy dog eyes. “We are going to die.”

Ryan can’t help the chuckle that escapes his lips, swimming over to Jeremy. “You’re so cute when you’re all worried. I promise we will be fine. I’ll protect you.” He kisses his nose, their tails wrapping together intimately. “I wouldn’t have invited you if it wasn’t safe.”

“The warnings, Ryan,” Jeremy insists, hands rubbing up and down Ryan’s arms. “I doubt the king would just say things to scare us. He’s seen so much out there, he just wants to protect us.”

Ryan frowns. “Jeremy, they are lies. He doesn’t want people to leave the kingdom because he knows the rest of the ocean is paradise. I’ve heard stories of people who have made it out, that they are so much happier.” He wraps his arms around his lover, pressing their foreheads together. “I want to be happier out there, with you.”

Jeremy is still hesitant, but he’s never been one to tell Ryan no. “I hope you are right, Ryan.”
