I have once again planted an unreasonable amount of seedlings on my balcony. The tomatoes on the right picture are the ones sown in January, they're almost ready to get planted outside! I'm considering planting a few in March just to see if there's a chance they survive. If they did they would make huge tomato plants and produce earlier than any other plant, and if they don't make it, I have plenty more!

Even though there are so many plants I can hardly fit them on my balcony and it is overwhelming to keep up the watering, I deeply need all of these as my emotional support. Also there's plenty of stuff that didn't make it! Onions never grew even though I tried multiple times, and my sweet potato just rotted instead of growing new seedlings. The flowers are not really coming up either, I only have a few unknown little flower plants.

I'm still planning to start another wave of tomatoes and also to start cucumbers, squash and cantaloupes so this is not over. I wish I had a greenhouse or a conservatory for this!

I have about five things I'm picking away at, but I'll pick the one I started writing yesterday after a discord chat. It's an utterly ridiculous eggplant-innuendo cookbook piece of nonsense. Currently sitting at 4200 words, I cannot stop thinking about this thing, and I don't know what that says about me.

Now that you've dipped your toes into the wonderful world of eggplants, it's time to kick it up a notch.

Eggplants! Growing them is both surprisingly simple and a total pain in the ass. Sure, a cultivated (domesticated) plant might grow to almost 5 feet in length, but that doesn't mean the fruits will all be firm, robust, mouth-watering weights in your hand. Farming takes skills! And if you don't want to grow your own eggplants, you're going to want to buy the freshest, firmest, most robust eggplants you can find. And that means…

Getting to know your local farmer! (note: assuming it's possible to grow eggplants in your region; if it isn't, then I suggest a) moving, b) taking a long holiday to an eggplant-growing region during harvest season and getting to know your local market, or c) first b then a).

Fun eggplant fact: Eggplants are fruits! Not vegetables. But don't eat them in a fruit salad, you'll regret it. That isn't a threat. It's just reality.

Eggplant varieties. We have eaten the long one (pic 2) and the striped one (pic 4). It was the first time I ever ate self grown eggplants and I shouldn't have been that surprised, knowing how much more taste homegrown tomatoes and cucumbers have for example, but they tasted soo good. Both more intense, the long earthier, the striped fresher. The small black one is the only one I grew from seed myself and is hopefully making it this time. A first fruit and flowers were taken by someone (the foxes?!). There are definitely more striped ones to come!
