Modern reconstruction for the National Museum and Sagnlandet Lejre
Despite being preserved in almost perfect condition, the Egtved Girl's (c. 1390 – c. 1370 BC) clothes have been a controversial topic for an entire century. Because of how unexpectedly revealing (for our expectations) they look, these Bronze Age top and skirt's depictions have been repeatedly changed to be more "modest" and better fit the 20th century's sensibilities. Only by the end of the 1990s, Egtved Girl's clothes have been reconstructed accurately.

Ny dagsinstituion ser dagens lys i Fredericia
Norse Bronze Matron Set
Inspired by @vroshii's Egtved dress and using the mesh and texture of the disk found on this dress, I have made a version for more matronly sims. Also, a layered necklace, and matching bracelets. Thank you vro for your open TOU!
There are a few swatches for the dress, but they are variations of brown, gray, and white undyed wool. Although the Bronze Age Norsemen had access to materials that could produce dye, there is zero evidence that they actually dyed their clothes before the start of the Iron Age. They were, however, experts at metalsmithing, hence the magnificent jewelry.

The Egtved Girl (c. 1390–1370 BC) was a Nordic Bronze Age girl whose well-preserved remains were discovered outside Egtved, Denmark 1921. Aged 16–18 at death, she was slim, 1.6 meters (5 ft 3 in) tall, had short, blond hair and well-trimmed nails. Her burial has been dated by dendrochronology to 1370 BC.
In the coffin, the girl was wrapped in an ox hide. She wore a loose, short tunic with sleeves reaching the elbow. She had a bare waist and wore a short string skirt. She had bronze bracelets, a woolen belt, a large disc decorated with spirals, and a spike. At her feet were the cremated remains of a child aged 5 to 6. There was a small birch bark box by her head containing an awl, bronze pins, and a hair net.
Before the coffin was closed, she was covered with a blanket and an ox hide. Flowering yarrow (indicating a summer burial) and a bucket of beer made of wheat, honey, bog myrtle, and cowberries were placed atop. Her distinctive outfit, which caused a sensation when it was unearthed in the 1920s, is the best-preserved example of a style now known to be common in northern Europe during the Bronze Age. The good preservation of the Egtved Girl’s outfit is due to the acidic bog conditions of the soil, which is a common condition of this locale.

I find myself endlessly fascinated with jewelry and metalworking. I took a class with a local jeweler in the middle of the pandemic and bought a bunch of supplies. And it’s so much work but so lovely when you end up with an object that’s more than just a sheet of metal. And to think that we’ve been doing this for thousands of year, carefully crafting and honing and adorning ourselves. Truly alchemical. For whatever reason I keep getting Facebook posts about ancient bodies being unearthed and I don’t find them disturbing (for the most part), especially when they’ve been discovered as having been buried in an elaborate ritual or covered with precious metals, fabrics, writings. The Egtved girl made me particularly emotional.

GTVED KADINI
E
Egtved Kadını (MÖ 1390-1370), iyi korunmuş kalıntıları 1921'de Danimarka'nın Egtved kentinin dışında keşfedilen bir Kuzey Tunççağı kadınıydı.
Tumblr media
