A couple of the replies to my response about modern US American AU Darcy were specifically about my tags, so I’m copy-pasting those for context:

i personally KNOW several rich lesbians with a house in seattle who fit this (some of them have expanded their horizons. some of them have Not.)

Darcy is definitely one who expands her horizons! But yeah, I think this type of queer person whose politics are generally progressive but untethered from class consciousness is really familiar in the US and esp in expensive coastal areas—obviously there are cultural and local differences along the coasts, but she could easily come from Portland or San Francisco or wherever. The Seattle freeze stereotype does seem particularly apropos for the character, though. (I grew up in NW Washington, however, so not unbiased!)

I do honestly feel like Lady Catherine is interesting in the novel because of her likely alignment with Whig aristocracy and also because of her actual stated opinions beyond, uhh, scolding the poor and such, and that this corresponds better to a sort of shallow elitist US liberalism than, well, some Ann Coulter type or whatnot.

In the book, Lady Catherine is like... I see no reason for entailing estates away from women, the de Bourghs didn’t pull that kind of shit, which isn’t wrong, but she only cares because it could affect her personally. She casually talks about how men don’t care about their daughters, but is not only somewhat wrong in the context of the conversation about Mr Bennet (who doesn’t care much about all his daughters but... well, some two of them, in his way) but only brings it up because she either wants Elizabeth’s company for longer or wants the opportunity of graciously condescending to send her home in style (without actually thinking through all the practical considerations of doing so) or some combination of both.

Lady Catherine only seems able to understand injustice insofar as it could theoretically affect her, and I think the point of the critique is not that she’s wrong about entailment or about fathers often being callous towards their daughters or even about “helping” those further down the social ladder, but that her motives are transparently selfish and egocentric, her execution is short-sighted at best, she’s frankly not that bright, and she’s also super classist.

So for me, the most natural US political analogue to all this is like ... a particularly empty, elitist, and self-interested form of liberal feminism more than openly conservative bullshit. She is exactly the kind of liberal to announce “if I’d gone into politics, I would simply destroy patriarchy with the bully pulpit” while 100% convinced that the branches of government are the House, the Senate, and the presidency.

Looking for, I think a fic I read? I've skimmed all the EDA summaries to no avail.

It's Eight and Fitz and I want to say Compassion.

Fitz volunteers himself to pose as a child killer so that they can see inside a prison (and do the Doctor won't do it instead), Compassion follows the suspect, and the Doctor gets together a team to do a heist and break Fitz out.

The actual plot features something about a virus that makes you have children of X species? The goal being a very 'if we aren't different we won't have to fight' thing. Another alien race wants to find and destroy it- because they like their second class citizens, thanks. There is a confrontation with the alien Queen at the end and the planet everything happened on gets quarantined?

I feel like I remember someone saying hey I wrote my own EDA, so if that's you .. please let me know how to find your story?

regretably i am a nonzero amount of obsessed with genshin impact, and SPECIFICALLY with Lumine, the female player character.

she's an unfathomably ancient being who's been travelling the universe for thousands of years and is now travelling teyvat looking for her brother. she apparently managed to live there for YEARS prior to the start of the game without meeting any humans. despite this every female character she meets acts like they have a crush on her. she saves multiple countries but only sort of. incidentally. she happened to be passing by. it seemed like it would her her find her brother.

How many books did you read this year?

I read 172! :0 I listened at least a third of them at work. and read a not-insubstantial amount of manga and comics hahaha

12. Any books that disappointed you?

Already answered but I'm down to bitch more about books lol. Another disappointment (though it was still fine) was The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. I see it alllll the time at work, it's so popular, so I decided to see what the fuss was about. And I was hoping it'd give me Only Murders in the Building vibes, which I'd just caught up on at the time. I guess it sorta succeeded on that front, but I was also kinda bored and didn't care about the characters. idk why but I have a lot of trouble getting into most mysteries!

19. Did you use your library?

Yessss, absolutely. I work at the library so that's where I get a majority of my books. and where I add a lot to my tbr...

according to my spreadsheet, 85% of my books were from the library!

Yeah!

I haven't been posting about me and @eighthdoctor's wedding much because, frankly, the arrangements in the leadup have been so stressful that the idea of using my FREE TIME to CONTINUE THINKING ABOUT WEDDING STUFF was absolutely appalling.

But it was wonderful, our rabbi did an amazing job with a really intimate personalized ceremony. All the parents cried multiple times. I killed my sister dead on the spot by asking her to walk me down the aisle with our dad in recognition of how the three of us were a unit for so many years. Everyone was deeply appreciative of the fact that our catering choices were "dietary-restriction-friendly taco buffet" and "Costco sheet cake". @alexkablob roasted us-but-mostly-me just the right amount in her maid of honor speech.

There was a mule.

You know. Wedding things.

It was really lovely.

Looms!!

I absolutely 100% believe Time Lords are born via loom, but I have no firm personal headcanon on the Everything surrounding that, other than I Don't Agree With Lungbarrow.

I almost always go for "yeah but they're loomed as babies instead of adults" and am more likely to go with "Time Lords can give birth like humans, but choose to loom instead because Tradition/That's Icky" than "biological reproduction Not Possible" but that's about it.

Do Time Lords have nuclear family units? Do all Gallifreyans loom or just Time Lords? Can Scendles even afford looms? Do Time Lords Fuck? How many people can throw their DNA in a loom to make a kid come out? Does it have to be just Gallifreyan DNA in the loom? Was the Doctor loomed? Do Gallifreyans actually lay eggs instead of giving live birth? The answer is It Depends How I Feel On The Day. Looms are definitely real tho.

Mystra has been telling him he was destined for greatness ever since he was a boy. Is this what she meant? That he will change everything, at the price of his life? He wonders how it will feel, to drive the knife through his chest, to feel his heart stop beating, to feel the Orb blow. He’s sure it will be agonising. He stifles a sob; he's scared – of pain or death or both, he's not certain. But his heart quakes at the thought, and a wave of nausea hits him, making his head swim. He claps a hand over his mouth and runs into the woods, his throat hot and stinging as his mouth fills with bile – and he vomits all over the dirt. Everything burns, from his throat to the inside of his nose to his eyes, and he plunges his face in a nearby stream, gulping down the water. He throws his head back, the cold water soothing as he gargles it.
