Once again it's long past WiP Wednesday, but I started work on a new fic that was supposed to be short and is looking like it will be... not that. 😅 So, have a snippet of a belated birthday fic for Li Lianhua. Enjoy? ^_^

The package was clumsily wrapped, brightly-colored paper folded about it in ways that let the wind pass through as easily as Lianhualou's walls once had.  Before Fang Duobing with his endlessly clever mechanic's hands and Di Feisheing and his boundless strength and stubborn good will had inexorably mended what had once been so haphazardly done.  This package showed none of that care, none of that attention to detail, left sitting on the kitchen table for Li LIanhua to find as if its giver couldn't be done with the thing quickly enough.

A warm hand landed on the small of his back, the bright staccato of an excited voice breathless in his ear belied that impression almost immediately thereafter.  "Aren't you going to open it?"

Li Lianhua rolled his eyes sideways to find Fang Duobing's gaze fixed on him, a wide smile on his face as he all but bounced in place beside him.  Li Lianhua turned his eyes back to the gift, sighing softly as he said, "What on Earth is it for?"

The warm hand left his back as Fang Duobing reached out to grab the package and dump it in his hands.  Half the wrapping paper fell to the floor.  "Happy birthday!"

Shaking his head, Li Lianhua shifted the package between his hands, the weight and warmth of it comforting, though he had no idea what it was.  "Xiabao, it isn't my birthday."

Fang Duobing gave him a nudge until he sat down at the table, package in hand and motioned him to open it.  "Well, it could be, for all you know.  So stop fussing and open your gift."  As Li Lianhua finally started pulling the paper apart, Fang Duobing loomed over him, watching him like a hawk waiting for the right moment to strike.  Sure enough, the moment the last of the paper fell away, Fang Duobing reached forward and pulled the gift from Li LIanhua's hands to hold it up to its full size.

A blanket.

A warm, thick blanket, the likes of which were common in Tianji Hall and had been at Sigumen but that Li LIanhua had never been able to afford for Lianhualou.  It was easily large enough to cover three.  He rose and reached out a hand to run down the front of it.  It was even softer than it looked.

Another hand came to rest at the hollow of his waist, its owner's warmth pressing lightly along his entire back.  With Di Feisheng behind him and Fang Duobing waiting eagerly in front of him, a flutter started in his stomach, then moved to beat against the inside of his ribs in a way that left him shaking. Fang Duobing stepped closer, half wrapping the blanket around him as he pressed their foreheads together.  Smiling, he said simply, "I'm glad you like it."

A-Fei’s jaw worked subtly side to side once, then twice. He swallowed, throat jerking with the movement. “Alright,” he said at last. “What do you need to not do it again?”

“What?” Xiaobao shouted.

How had he guessed? What had given it away? No, it didn’t matter. How could he hide it? He had to do something, say something, but he couldn’t think over the sound of his pulse, thundering in his ears, and–

–and something was fluttering against his hand. Repeatedly.

He glanced down. 

A-Fei’s fingers were lightly resting on the inside of his wrist, and gently, well-nigh imperceptibly, tapping a rapid, two-beat pattern. 

His pulse.

A-Fei had been listening to his pulse when he asked those questions. That’s how he spotted the lie.

. . . Shit.

He glared daggers at a-Fei. A-Fei retaliated with the faintest of half-smiles, a matching raised eyebrow, and a one-armed shrug that curled up as imperceptibly as his lip and eyebrow had.

THIS IS SUCH A HARD QUESTION. ...the one that's not finished yet! But, uh. Let's think. I'm very proud of Exploration because it's not my usual type of fic, I think? IT HAD A FIGHT SCENE. But also if we give a person a heart because I think it's got really pretty imagery in it.

THIS IS ALSO VERY HARD?? I like most fics I write. Caring for Your Zhang Qiling: A Practical Guide is the definition of self-indulging though. Reprise was also a lot of fun. ...I guess A-Kun fics is the answer XD

THIS ONE IS THE HARDEST. But I think it's this piece of Xiaoge angst from if we give a person a heart:

He’s intimately familiar with being broken. Sometimes he thinks he’s never been anything else. (Those are the good days. On the bad days, he wonders, over and over: does he really exist at all? Ghosts can leave a tangible proof in the world, after all.) Maybe he’s still behind the Gate. Maybe he’s still in the jade meteorite. Maybe he’s still in a woven basket. Maybe he’s still in Golmud. Maybe he’s still staring at a piece of rock, unable to sculpt anything out of it, unable to feel, inhuman. Maybe he only exists in Wu Xie’s imagination. Pain is grounding, isn’t it? Ohhh, this is a hard question. I think it's a toss-up between Keep On Going and Safe In Your Hands? In both of them, I'm proud of how I handled the Weilan relationship dynamic, something I was pushed to pay extra attention to because they're both gift fics to people whose opinion on how Weilan is portrayed/interpreted matters to me.

Plus something about post-canon Weilan dealing with the fallout of surviving just. Tickled me this year in particular? It keeps showing up in these fics written for events.

Chelsea x Reader and Eirene x Reader (separate)

Content warnings: might contain a bit of financial manipulation (particularly Eirene’s, though nothing NSFW. Regardless, exercise caution.

Countess Chelsea:

She found out when you got an unexpected call from your insurance provider when you both were on a date, notifying you that they would stop covering the cost for one of your meds.

You were always adamant about not relying on her for anything, and she was fond of this part of you, but still, you insisted that it’s alright, you can take care of yourself, and you will find a way out of this mess the way you always did whenever a similar problem came up.

This earns you a pinch of your cheek and a teasing remark, and she stopped mentioning it up to the end of your date.

Later at night, you receive a call, saying that there was a policy mistake and you’ll get your meds covered again.

Chelsea was evasive about it when asked directly, however, your guess was practically confirmed from the way she acts. She’s more demanding for cuddles, more willing to tease you for more affection. Part of this was from habit, as she would usually ask her sugar babies to do som embarassing things in exchange for her money, but for the most part? She wants you close.

I believe that Sitri would actually push you closer to her while you two were cuddling. Having a gem cat press on your back or body is certainly interesting, to say the least.

One thing is clear, after this, Chelsea will start paying more attention to you :)

Eirene:

There is no way that she wouldn’t have found out eventually. As the CEO of a supermassive company, she has to keep an eye on those she cherishes, or risk those people getting harmed by her competitors.

However, she is a businesswoman through and through, and it shows with the ‘aid’ she gave you. When you got drenched late at night as your roof gave way, she immediately responded, ordering her employees to take you to the best hotel right away. You thanked her afterwards, and she did bask in your gratitude, however, she keeps a ledger of the aid she gave you.

She takes time to visit under pretense of checking the hotel’s accomodation. In her words, a business under her company should always provide the best accomodation at all times and this was just a surprise inspection. However, you can just sense that she wanted an excuse to visit you.

Point this out, however, and all of a sudden, a vase in a corner somewhere would turn into a pile of dust, while her demeanor remained the same.

She loves you, truly, but a combination of wanting to keep you safe and her desire to have you culminates in giving you a contract, promising you will never want for anything as long as you work for her. Under several dozen pages of legalese, she hid a clause that you would surrender your entire being to her.

All the aid she gives are not free, and she keeps a ledger of how much you owe her. Write your name on the dotted line, and your life will become all that much easier~

Thinking about a Modern AU for Path to Nowhere and I've got prompts! :D

Office romance with Eirene. She's the cold hearted CEO of Quinn Corporations who has never been in a relationship before and you're the overworked employee that has only ever been in toxic relationships.

Eirene interrupts a yelling your boss was giving you and that interaction soon leads to many more between the two of you. Through you, she finds out about the toxic work environment and mistreatment within her company. This leads to Eirene ordering an overhaul of each department with a multitude of firings of shitty employees occurring and a reworking of many systems.

The both of you grow closer to one another and soon feelings start to bloom. But there's a problem, Eirene's doesn't know a thing about romance and is to prideful to outright ask you out, and you're as dense as a rock and in denial with the possibility of her liking you.

Mafia romance with Zoya. She's the leader of the infamous gang The Legion and you're a forced stripper trying to work off the debt your parents accumulated from a different gang by working at their club.

Zoya was visiting the club to discuss gang matters with the owner when you come over to entertain her whilst she waited for them. She found herself enamoured by you. You looked so out of place, like you didn't belong in your current position and this peeked Zoya's interest. She starts coming to the club regularly, booking you for a few hours in a VIP lounge and eventually conversations start between the two of you.

You both become friends somewhat and you start looking forward to her visits. Zoya starts to get bold, becoming touchy with you and asking more personal questions. You do the same, wanting to know more about her and encouraging her touches whilst initiating your own. Soon the sexual tension becomes too thick to bare and you have sex with her. Afterwards, your boss tries to stop future appointments with Zoya but she doesn't plan on letting that happen.

Amnesia and Small Town romance with Adela. She's a well-known local of the area with a famous salon and you're a new resident who's settling into the area.

You end up moving into town after a nasty divorce with your ex-husband, just wanting to be away from him and to start fresh somewhere. As you're settling in, you start going out for things and talking to the locals. You are told about many things within the town along with a salon and its highly praised owner.

You soon decide to visit the salon for a haircut and now you cant shake the feeling of familiarity during or after your visit. Soon you start getting odd dreams and visions of a life within this small town with the most prominent ones being a fight with your father, a car accident, a mysterious lady, and a feminine voice with a britsh accent.

I don't actually have 10 fics posted on ao3 for this fandom (yet) so I'm cheating and a lot of this will be unposted WIPs from my docs folder. Consider it a taste of what is (hopefully) to come! ;)

aaaand, that's it for what I've posted on ao3 so far. The rest of these are WIPs that still only exist in my docs:

Do you notice any patterns?

I'm awful at analyzing my own writing, but the first thing I noticed was that I tend toward relatively short first sentences? This left me very tempted to include more than one sentence for several of these, but I resisted!

I promised, promised myself that I wouldn’t read the Roman König x Fee fic until it was completed because I knew i would get absolutely drawn in, wrapped up in your exquisite prose, then get addicted and suffer from withdrawals. Unneeded to say I broke said promise and welp here I am 🤡

Thing that surprised me was how quickly he endeared himself to me? A cock swinging village massacring brute that I was FULLY prepared to hate had me sighing by then end of chapter 3 with the “you care about my head?” ✋😩 YES I worry for your stupid head you adorable monster.

It’s uncanny how similarly Fee and I felt as the plot progressed. I know this is a self insert and though I made an OC for fee, you were able to capture the feeling of hate to curiousity to distrust to budding emotions on the readers side so beautifully and in only three chapters?? What sorcery is this?? I could go on and on about how I’m just… in awe of your writing skills.

It’s the small things too. The effort he went through to understand Fee, learning her language like he desperately wants to be a part of her. It’s just his delight in the simple things like having a woman and buying her pretty things. I AM GOING TO GNAW OFF MY ARM THIS IS SO GOOD!! I don’t know if you’ve watched HBOs Rome, but they remind me of Pullo and Eirene so much! Like you can’t tell me König doesn’t fit that goofy brawdy soldier who’s only hobbies are drinking and fucking and fighting to a T!

Then it got me thinking…. If König is Pullo then Simon is Vorenus. He has that straight laced, no bs aura about him. Now I’m imagining them both in this universe and please excuse me while I melt in a puddle 🫠

This is perhaps the best piece of fiction I’ve read in a while. I can’t wait for part 4, I have no doubt it will be wonderful as usual. Please accept my maladaptive daydream interpretation of Fee (first she was supposed to be a wood nymph, then the earth goddess then a fairy queen?? I’m not sure anymore. There was so much great imagery couldn’t settle on one. Your honor, we lost the plot.)

And yes I’ve watched Rome like four times at least! Every time I watch it just gets better, the producers and crew really outdid themselves with all the details in that series. I consider it one of the best TV shows ever made and excuse me but you opened a Pandora’s box here, I'm just so pleased you brought this up...

It took so much time for Pullo to grow on me, I was so frustrated with his character but when he killed Eirene’s man because he was so in love with her and was just like: “Oh there's something in the way of our love? Oh well. *there*, solved.” Gosh I was IN LOVE. I’m sorry, I’m a horrible person, but I fell in love with Pullo right that second. And yeah König is kinda like Pullo in that sense! Eirene wails at the corpse of her ex-lover and Pullo is just like “Um, yeah nasty business but… why are you crying? Oh, oh yeah, oops. But hey, we could be together? Oh, you don’t want me? Damn. How come?” I wanted to shake and kiss him for being so dumb and adorable.

And Ghost is Vorenus YES, you get it 100 %! And the tragic love story of Vorenus & Niobe, oh god, took me about a month to get over it. And Vorenus being under the protection of Mars first and then literally becoming Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld… The mythology nerd in me is swooning over here. The only thing about Vorenus that's slightly König coded to me was when Pullo had to explain to him what a clitoris is, and Vorenus is like “How do you know this about my wife?!?!” and almost kills him :D That’s so so Roman!König.

But AHHH let me squeal about your maladaptive daydream adaption next: she’s the most gorgeous Fee ever, so lovely and feminine and yet, strong and possessing that earthly power in her. I love the color of her dress too!! There’s a lot of earth & water elements linked to Fee so that color (green to turquoise?) is the most perfect combination of earth and sea, while König is more like fire & air, coming from the mountains and slow to anger but when the fire rises, no one is safe...

This was so lovely, thank you so much! I hope you enjoy the rest of the story 🩷💋

Oh this is a fun one :) It's Sha Hai Wu Xie finding snake venom with memories of Xiaoge in Golmud. From the POV of people who tortured him there, because it's neat :) I'll give you a snippet from this one:

The man whose memories Wu Xie was seeing approached the mirror. Wu Xie was glad: he would get to know the face of the man he hated, who hurt Xiaoge so much.

He looked into the mirror and saw his own face.

10) xiaoge and scars: meta disguised as fic

So like ages ago akairen52 asked for a fic with Xiaoge and scars and I have many many feelings about it, which is not conductive to writing plot, haha. It's just. He has to be covered in scars. He has to, considering his childhood, and his whole life, and, you know, 20 years of Golmud, and A-Kun, and that thing where he keeps slicing his own palm open. And I want Wu Xie to see them all. And maybe hug him a lot.

Man I’m making a Langley fic right now and I just thought of a random idea. Bringing her to a chiropractor. She has her cane so I don’t know if like she got injured or like it’s just for the vibe. Proabably has some sort of dagger or spy thingies in there also. But just her going to a chiropractor. It would so crunchy, not in a weird way but she would have a lot of stress. You know when like a chiropractor turns you on your side and lift you leg up like half way and then presses down; popping your hip I think. Especially if you’re doing it to her she’ll be sighing from the relief. She would kind of hesitant on you popping her head though. Like when the chiropractor puts their arm around her head and jerks upward. She still lets you do it. You would have to persuade her a lot if you want to do it. But she’ll eventually give in after a tiring night.

I’m planning on making a pretty long Langley fic that’s based off a C drama I’m watching. Kind of an enemy to lovers but you guys are working for the same corporation. And that corporation is trying to take over the world or like taking over the other organizations. But like you guys are getting “married off” there to gather information and kill the head bitches there because y’all haven’t conquered that organization yet. They are looking for someone to marry the main bitches son aka like the leader. Every organization is sending them. And it’s your guys only chance because they haven’t been flaking with other organizations after your trying to take everybody down. It’s gonna be wlw. Maybe a self ship but idk you guys can always imagine it as you guys. But everyone in your organization have like code names and from certain groups. Like a social status but for how strong you are. Probably gonna have jealous sex, maybe even add in another older woman I’ll just make into another PTN character. The reader is younger than her but doesn’t lack experience. A little bit 白切黑 just meaning that she looks innocent but isn’t. Very short explanation but whatever. Anybody interested in reading? :0

Last song I listened to: That depends: one that I chose, or one that I heard? Because I was in a cafe in Paris this afternoon that started playing “You Sexy Thing” on the soundsystem and almost did a spit-take with my latte. In terms of something I chose, I just put on Patrick Wolf’s “Teignmouth” (the Sundark and Riverlight version) before sitting down to answer these questions because I refused to have that song be my answer. :D

Currently Watching: Getting close(ish) to finishing some group watches of Luoyang and rewatched of Destined and The Untamed, and about to start a watchalong of Immortal Samsara with @eirenical, and on my own I started watching Legend of Shenli and In Blossom, which I put on hold because of travel (and wanting to spend my spare time writing).

Currently obsessed with: It’s still Mysterious Lotus Casebook, and that’s not changing any time soon. :D (it better not, at least! I’m almost 50k into writing what will probably be around a 100k fic for it, so I better keep with this hyperfixation for awhile, lol). I’m still regularly checking AO3 for my other favorite fandoms, but MLC hasn’t left a lot of brain space for other things.
